I was so happy when I saw this moment in the manga. Zeref being one of my most favourite villains, especially when I learned the truth about him and his curse, I really did hope that there would be some form of peace for him and Mavis. So heartwarming 😭. This is one of many reasons why I love fairy tail as this bloody show can yank on your heartstrings.

My interpretation is that since this thing is so contradictory, it gives you the opposite of what you wished for. In that case, they were expecting to fully die, so they lived on, but lost all memories because well, they wished they could talk further. When Mavis cried about the curse, it got stronger, and since they accepted that they both have the curse in the end, the curse disappeared. So, the nature of the magic, consistent to the end.
