Truthfully I think Mavis did love zeref as much as zeref. but It could be said that Mavis maybe someone where deep down partly blame zeref for the tragedy of what happen. That she couldn’t accept what happened and that feeling blunted her love It wasn’t until much later during the war and having to experience much grief. The pain of her family and comrades the pain she herself had to endure and the pain her lover had to endure! Facing all of that she could understand and fully embrace the love she felt for him! Atleast that what I think

Sadly, if they both knew. It wouldn't have ended well for anyone; and like a dominoes effect, someone still in touch with Mavis would soon feel the peril of witnessing her curse
Which is why (even though it is despicably heart-wrenching), them not knowing about August was the only way they wouldn't have to see him die (until the end, where they are somehow forsaken by Ankhseram, and been given new lives)
I've seen loads of couples where that's the case. It's not that wierd. Also Zeref was maybe around 18-20 when he "gained" immortality while Mavis was only 13 so that also explains it.
I knew a couple that had a height difference of 1 foot 10 inches she was 4' 11" and he was 6' 9" tall. This was in high school. It was funny to watch them kiss, it looked kind of like when a parent penguin is feeding their chick.
Well, he's like 300 years old at that time, since it's 100 years before the present, but I think they were close in age about the time they stopped aging.

He wanna value life but if he does that then those he gets close to dies, and because of thathe tries to not value life at all aka. the invasion by the Alvarez Empire, but in doing so more people die which he doesn't really want but he can't not stop valuing those lives because them they'll just die if he gets close to them etc etc. The Curse of Contradiction is a bitch.
There's a reason why zeref can't care. If he does then everything around him will die........ including natsu. Not being able to care then trying to care can make a person go mad
