    A big tip I advise people using truck GPS is to find the truck entry of your destination via Google satellite view, drop a pin then plug the coordinates that appear in the search bar into the GPS. This will make the GPS navigate to that exact spot as opposed to the address that we all know frequently is the car / employee entrance.
    I mention tip because I see Garmin has made it much easier to find the option to find a location via coordinates. Mcnally can do this too.

      Great tip, David. The dēzl also allows you to drop a pin on the unit itself once you get there. I mean, if you already have directions to the dock and dropping a pin will be convenient for the next time you go there.

    I’ve found with mounting the suction cup a little olive oil works much better than water for mounting to the window. When the suction cup gets kinda worn and keeps coming loose use a lighter to apply heat to the suction cup and get it flat again.

    Thanks for the in depth review. What I am looking for is a feature that allows me to create waypoints (or POIs) such as bridges or floodways etc and then create proximity alerts to these features. Maybe 500 mtrs to one type and 1km to another type, maybe 3 kms to another etc and have an audible alert that tells me I am approaching the feature that I have created. I've had a Garmin in the past that allowed this but it was only a tiny unit. Best GPS so far in my eyes but I've grown old and need a bigger unit/display. This aspect has not been covered in any review I have looked at so something to consider for the future maybe? Thankyou!!

    I bought the OTR 700 2 weeks ago and I believe it doesn't have the same mount as the 800 or 1000. It has the ball mount which hasn't fallen off the windshield yet but everytime I touch the unit with my finger it moves really easy and you have to readjust it. What I don't like about it is it does not show you the mile marker unless you touch the screen and bring it up it does not show you what town you're going through unless you touch the screen and bring it up does not have a clock on it unless you touch the screen and bring it up. For me, Stuff like that's important to know all the time having it on the screen in front of you instead of constantly fiddling around with your GPS to bring all that stuff up while you're driving. It doesn't offer you a secondary route like a shorter route but you can still avoid toll roads. It has alerts that will pop up on the screen and you will get an alert in the form of a beep for example railroad tracks sharp curve ahead going over the speed limit. I'd rather have a verbal alert instead of a beep because a beep forces you to look at the screen and figure out what the alert was for. With the Rand McNally you can adjust speed warning so if you go out for example 5 miles an hour over the speed limit before you get a warning while you can't do that with the Garmin. They're totally different animals but I'm going to pick up the Rand McNally 800 pro2 and see what that looks like. While the Garmin otr700 has new features that will sync up with your Android phone I still like my old Rand McNally 720 better than the OTR 700 but unfortunately it finally went to meet its maker after about seven years of usage. I'm sending the OTR 700 back. To each his own

    • @ToddMc2
      @ToddMc2  2 года назад

      I'm actually surprised at this feedback because most of the things you mention can easily be done on the OTR1000. Secondary route? Check. Clock on screen? Check. Current mile marker? Check. Town ? Okay, you got me there. Although you can choose to show GPS coordinates onscreen. Seems like an oversight you can't show the town. In fact, I count 31 different data points you can choose from to show on screen at any given time. Granted, you have a limited number of spaces, so choose wisely. Also, you can set the screen to always be on so you don't have to constantly tap the screen to wake it up. You cannot change the speed limit you want to receive a warning, but you can turn it off entirely. As for the mount, I'll have to take your word for it since the OTR1000 has a different style. But in the end, it's like you said... to each his own.

      @@ToddMc2 I'm not sure if you read this earlier but I'm going to rewrite it because I just got off the phone with Garmin at tech support. I stopped off at a TA truck stop and went in and looked at the Garmin 800 and on the box it shows that it's showing more fields. So I called Garmin and they told me that it shows more stuff on the screen so I'm probably going to pick that up and demo it also he did show me how to get around on the 700 with secondary routes and such. I picked up the Rand McNally overdryve Pro 8 last week and I liked it but it needs wi-fi to run which is not a big deal but returning that because the voice for navigation is inaudible and the volume on it is very low probably coming in at about one-third the volume of the Garmin and that is with it set at the highest setting and it sounds like there is a pillow over the person's mouth. Also the Rand McNally has a plastic screen instead of a glass one like the Garmin and also has this attachment for Sirius Satellite which is something I don't need and I'm not sure anybody really needs this . They should just concentrate on making a GPS instead of making something that may appeal to more people and be a master of none. I initially called Garmin to ask some questions about the 700-800 they told me they were both the same unit but obviously the tech support agent did not know what he was talking about.

      I agree with you. My TND 720 Is starting to have issues, so I'm looking for something new before it dies.
      The 720 ahows all important info on one screen. The voice alerts are way better.
      Knowing what town and county you are in is very important as well and is always displayed. Rand McNally is a lot more customizable.
      The garmin has some nice features and the otr800 is a better ubit than the 700.
      I've heard of issues with the newr rands and rands new 2.0 isn't as good as the TND 720. The new rands also have some nice features. It's tough. Not sure what route i want to go but I'm leaning towards the otr800.
      One feature I'm interested in on the garmin is the ability to connect with my prepass but not a must have feature. I also use the garmin eld.
      The Rand will keep yelling at you if you turn on a road with low clearance or non truck route, his experience with the garman is a little scary that it wants you to crash into the bridge, lol
      The TND 750 looks like you can find new qpps, so it might be able to run trucker path. The garmin looks like apps are preloaded with no option for you to install apps.
      It's a tough call and a lot of money for expeeimenting

    • @vintagestrings6
      @vintagestrings6 2 года назад +1

      @@INFRNL1 thanks for the reply and feedback. I wanted to tell you that Rand McNally just came out with a major update for the overdryve 8 Pro 2 which is supposed to help with maps and I believe fix the issue with the barely Audible voice. It's still a toss-up between the OTR800 which is not as customizable but connects to your phone by Bluetooth and has a red light camera warning versus the Rand McNally. If the Garmin add more options to be customizable I would go with that one. At this point I'm not really going over the road as much and I can really do without either one and just wait till something new may come out in the future.

    The Dezl 1000 is on sale right now at Loves for $699. I already got a Rand Mcnally Overdrive Pro 8 ii and I'm gonna get this OTR 1000 while it's on sale and use the Rand as a back up / for it's built in camera and built in Siriusxm radio and as a second opinion for certain routes that either unit ends up giving dumb directions for like putting you on a highway going west and making you get off 5 miles down the road and get back on going east... Instead of just telling you to take the east exit in the first place. If I have 2 units running at the same time maybe one or the other will catch the dumb mistake.

Anyway, I just picked up a 700 model of this from a friend. I'm coming from a Garmin Drive, which is essentially a 7" model just like the truck GPS, but sans the truck side of things; it's only a year old.
    The question here is how can I get off the old data from the old GPS to the new GPS via the SIM card? I thought it would let you do that, but I'm not seeing any instructions. Any ideas?

      Alas, I've sent the unit back already. I didn't use the break timer much, but it appears to just pop up when you first start your trip and you can tell it to start the timer. If memory serves, it pauses the clock after a bit when the truck stops and it resumes when you start moving again. Don't hold my feet to the fire on that though! It wasn't 100% accurate, but it was close enough. After all, I am a firm believer in not waiting until the last second to get your 30 minute or 10 hour break in.

    • @ToddMc2
      @ToddMc2  2 года назад

      Don, I don't think you can specify a distance to be warned about weigh stations, but the device does give you advance warning. I don't know the distance, but it's not a last-second "surprise" notification. Just make sure you have the weigh station alert turned on.
      I don't cover it specifically in this video, but the Settings discussion starts at the 4:40 mark and you'll see me scroll past the Driver Assistance category around the 5:17 mark. You can turn different alerts on/off in there. Hope this helps.

    Did you find the stock speaker volume set on full hard to hear and too low when the truck is driving? Its no way near as loud as the dezl 770, I had my old 770 set on 80% which is fine, the 800/1000 set on full is about the equivalent of 50% on the 770, I think Garmin dropped the ball big time on this, I contacted them about it and they just were not interested, its a shame because everything else about the unit is fantastic. At the price you don't want to be buying blue tooth speakers just to hear your GPS. I can't understand why they would put out a new model that has half the volume of its predecessor, its a important function that's needed everyday.

      I have the 800. And yes, if you have Wi-Fi connected you can pretty much use it as a tablet to browse web or whatever.
      With garmin drive app, you can use Google maps to choose a destination and send it to the garmin. I use that all the time.

    I bought the 800 6 months ago worst 600 I ever spent, it doesn't find half of the trucks stops places I've been over a dozen times it would send me down the wrong roads not meant for trucks routing is terrible got so bad couldn't trust it unless the place was off the interstate lots of bugs I highly don't recommend it .

    • @ToddMc2
      @ToddMc2  3 года назад

      Sorry I didn’t respond, Jeremy. I didn’t see it until your follow-up comment. My bad.
      I honestly didn’t have that much problem with routing other than a couple of instances here in there. But I honestly don’t get off the beaten path near as much as OTR drivers do. So if that’s the context you’re using it in, I’ll have to take your word for it.
      As for the search, I did comment in the video how horrible it was, so I’m not at all surprised it couldn’t find truckstops that you go to every day. My suggestion would be to program those truckstops into your device and give them a unique name. It seems to work pretty well with the voice feature then. Or it’s always in your saved places for easy access.
      Thank you for your input on this. It’s always good to get opposing opinions on a product that costs this stinking’ much money!
