    Freedom of speech has to be absolute. You can't box in "freedom of hateful speech" and categorise that as something we should remove from the freedom of speech right. As soon as that is in place the definition of hateful will start to be stretched and mutated until it encompasses offensive speech and that is a completely different game. It is only a step or two away from being able to police what people are allowed to say.
    Freedom of speech is a hard won right and should not be so lightly abandoned. The price for free speech for all is the possibility of having to hear things that you do not like.
    Once free speech starts to disintegrate so does our right to dissent.
    And in truth, if someone says something rude or offensive or sexist or racist, ignore it, deal with it and move on. You have the right to be offended, but you do not have the right to remove a persons right to speak, no matter how terrible their choice of words.

    • @Jammsbro1

      +Cody Miller Citations please. Men get the same level of shit online and offline as women. We are just temepered to deal with it from walking. Men are far more subject to physical violence than women when growing up. Men are given as much verbal and psychological shit as women.
      As for being doxxed? I could give you dozens of examples of women, feminists doxxing men, doxxing women, doxxing other feminists. It's not a problem exlusive to women I'm afraid. I've had it done to me.
      I had photographs of the outside of my house emailed to me by a guy who said he was coming to get me. Don't think for a second that there problems are female only. They are not. But what they really are, is mostly phantoms. Online shit talking, trolling and bullshit. You take the amount of shit posting online daily and then the amount of actual physical attacks or visitations in the same day and the numbers would be so far apart that I have trouble even trying to work it out.
      And the atwood quote? Rhetorical, fearmongering nonsense. Show me the amount of women killed last year due to online threats. Go ahead.

      +Jammsbro I don't see why freedom of speech has to be absolute, this is quite an immature and oversimplified way of seeing things in my opinion

    • @Jammsbro1
      @Jammsbro1 8 лет назад

      +bilou You can call it immature and oversimplified as an attempt at insulting the idea all you want. But until you explain a better way, shut up.

    • @bilou190896
      @bilou190896 8 лет назад

      Well, I just meant to say that it's like saying that freedom of action should be absolute, or should not exist, this is binary thinking, it may sound like a rational way to think on paper, but in reality we could come up with more subtle compromises, actually, I think we need to. Furthermore, freedom of speech can never be absolute, since we are conditioned by our language, our habits, peer pressure,... Plus I don't believe freedom to do whatever the 3éèè you want is a goal in se. And I'm sorry I my comment offended you.

    • @Jammsbro1
      @Jammsbro1 8 лет назад

      +bilou I said freedom of speech, not freedom of action. Totally different.
      As for you commenting on it being "binary", it's not, it is singular. Freedom of speech and nothing else. No "subtle compromises" that is a cowards code for telling people that at some point we can remove your right to dissent or expression.
      And who gets to decide on these subtle compromises? You? No. Free speech means having to put up with shit you might hate hearing, and that basic human right ensures that at any time, you have the right to express yourself. I won't ask that it is removed from you, so don't you try to tell me what I can or cannot say.

    I believe it is a minority of insecure people who leave aggressive insulting comments. Unfortunately right wing ideologies, gangster rap, homophobia, misogyny are all still present problems the rest of us have to deal with. So if you are an attractive intelligent women (making non-hateful music), you will unfortunately be hated on by that minority.

    The host seems.... way too like, I don't want to say creepy, and I don't want to say detached. But it feels like he's got no emotion. It's very odd. She's talking about getting flashed by some rando's and he doesn't offer any condolences or any sort of empathizing. I don't know, its just an odd demeanor I guess. EDIT: He gets better towards the end, but lol @ the part where he's just zoning and staring off in to space as she's talking. So strange haha.

      Gumbo72203 No, I feel like he's doing a good job. There's different types of hosts/interviewers, some take that very emotional and empathetic route, others take the steering of conversation and objectiveness. Depends on personality.
      I do like this guys way (the latter) because he will ask the things I want to hear answers to in a good way that maybe doesn't appeal to emotion. I also like the empathetic way, for the obvious reasons, but I dislike it in the way that it can occasionally be annoying or intrusive, and maybe seem insincere. Obviously this depends on how good the interviewer is.

      +Gumbo72203 And the rest of the comments here demonstrate the reactionary judgements of the internet. This is a person we are all talking about. It makes me wonder whether some of you have met many humans. We all are different in our articulation, behaviours and expressions. This boils down to a whole host of variables which construct the complexities of a human being. Shall we start analyzing every other person based on your relatively narrow perception of watching a video on the internet?.
      What we should be concentrating on is the content of this video. This comment is immature and irrelevant. He might be nervous, introverted or otherwise. But you have to question, what value does this have to communicate this publically on the internet. Though I have to expect a high-level of inanity on RUclips comments.
      I think it was a really interesting interview which obviously raises questions but is it realistic that we can police the interent.

Lauren is definitely including their input by using the plural in her answers and seems very nervous compared to the other interviews I've seen when she had her band mates sitting alongside her. You can tell it's really pissing them off. It would help defuse the weird creepiness of the guy in the green shirt. What a tool.

Because that is the governing force of freedom of expression. If people didn't think it was acceptable to make comments of the nature Lauren described then they wouldn't make them. Here is the deal. Here is what I believe. If you like somenes music, tell them, it could make them feel better. If you dont like it, and you just have to say something, just say "hey this music sucks" and leave it at that. Dont act all crazy, and threaten musicians, or say crazy stuff to them. Why do that? Look what happened to John Lennon, Rebecca Shafer, too. That is totally the worst thing, dont act like that. Dont hassle musicians. Dont go over the top with crazy. There is enough negative stuff out there. Dont do it. Just dont mess with people in general. Not cool. If you keep messing with her, how do you know she will not carry a gun and blow your head off, if you hassle her? She has the right to protect herself by any means necessary. Just like anyone else.

    • @michaelcraig9449
      @michaelcraig9449 8 лет назад +3

      there is nothing wrong with having a gun for personal protection, it is all in how responsibly you handle it. I have shotguns at home for home protection. I dont carry them around, swagger with them, play with them, let kids play with them, twirl them on my finger.. etc... only to be used as a last resort if some psycho or 2 kicks in the door or something late at night.. certainly a person has that right to protect themselves. You should be able to buy them also, do you have a lot of violent crime in Scotland, say Glasgow, Dundee, or Edinburgh? If someone is simply arguing and saying dumb shit to her, she has no right to shoot someone, but say, she is alone in her hotel room who knows where, on tour, and some crazy bastard breaks in and tries to rape her? It would be crazy not to shoot someone, in that case. All about the very last resort of personal protection, not to wave it around during an argument. Huge difference. See what I mean?

    • @TuffGnarl
      @TuffGnarl 8 лет назад

      +Michael Craig My comment was made in jest. Most types of guns were banned in the UK after a mass shooting of five and six year olds at a school in Scotland in 1996. Glasgow used to have a serious problem with violent crime (usually between gangs of youths) but the rates have fallen drastically in the last ten years. I'm from Edinburgh and I've never really felt in danger. I was once mugged for an iPod about ten years ago. Most violent crime in Scotland is alcohol related, the sort of scuffles you'd expect to witness outside nightclubs/bars anywhere and critically those incidents don't tend to involve weapons in the vast majority of cases. I appreciate that it might be difficult to understand from an American perspective, because firearms are obviously ubiquitous in the US, but nobody here owned guns in the first place in recent times and there's really no need for them here. Our police don't even carry, with the exception of specialist armed response units.

    • @TuffGnarl
      @TuffGnarl 8 лет назад

      +Michael Craig There's also very little appetite for gun ownership. I'd imagine that if asked, the percentage of Scots who would oppose relaxed gun restrictions would be in the high 90s.

    I can respect the message here but I find it odd that when we are talking about the source of the current social disorder, we are naive enough to believe that it exists because of the internet and anonymity. (at least that is want it sounds like here) Just because something has been made easier doesn't mean that thing existed in the first place. Social media is not the source of this sort of behavior, it only amplified it. You can't amplify something when it's zero to begin with. The real reason we are seeing this sort of abuse in society in general would be directly related to the rise in broken families and homes. You can't have the foundation of a structure disturbed and then be surprised when stuff at the top starts to topple. So how do we fix it? Can policing the internet help? Sure to an extent, but it's akin to simply putting a band aid on a wound when stitches are required. All that said, excellent music guys! (Strong Hard is my favorite tune but seriously every song is really good.)

Basically question them as a person for wanting to leave that type of comment. If they still choose to leave that comment then they can.

    I live in korea whose internet is very developed and people write very dirty dangerous or sexual comments. More developed internet society, disgusting and horrible comments increase. Once you pay attention to bad people there is no end. You can get mental problem like deep depression at worst. What I'm saying is occurred frequently in my country. Every superstar feel mental pain when they see comments. There is no restriction in writing bad comments and once you start to pay attention to wastes you get nothing but mental illness. Maybe talking with a man who gets lot of horrible comments and easily ignore mad comments help you deal with problem. Like sports star or actress superstar. Especially korean superstar recieve lot of terrible comments.

    • @xg3571
      @xg3571 10 лет назад

      The best way is not seeing every comments. Internet comments and advises usually don't help. If you really want to get internet opinion, public site in which there's no restriction of writing horrible comments doesn't help at all. More clean fan site will be better. Anonymous public comments really doesn't help nine in ten. Koreans are expert at dealing with bad comments.

    Online bullying is only bad because of anonymity but when confronted they hide behind free speech arguments. The ethical benchmark is usually, could you say the same comments to your own parents, elders or children? If not, then it is not okay to say it to a stranger, even someone you dislike.

    Artists should like streaming apps like spotify and pandora because it helps people discover new music that doesn't get played on the radio. There are a lot of bands/artists that I never would have heard of otherwise. Also, if I hear an artist somewhere else, like the radio or youtube, these apps allow me to further explore their other songs to see if I really like them without having to buy a whole album first. Then, if they do turn out to be something I really enjoy, I will typically buy their music so I can listen to it whenever I want.

    You can only have freedom of speech if it's absolute. When you block someone's speech it only opens the door for more speech to be blocked. Yes, it starts off all nice with maybe getting rid of trolls. However, What if a particularly popular group of people wants to silence the counter argument? That's where this sort of thing leads.

    • @sunshaped
      @sunshaped 8 лет назад +2

      an individual has the right to block those who intently act to harass or get a rise out of them via personal message. upholding free speech doesn't mean anyone and everyone is personally required to openly receive that free speech when it is directed at them in their own personal space. people aren't required to be open to debate at all times.

    • @sunshaped
      @sunshaped 8 лет назад +1

      a band or some other kind of group's social media account is their own space. like their own virtual living room. it's not necessarily an open forum. it's whatever the band or group wants it to be. it's a place to give out information or express opinions, not an automatic invitation for arguments or harassment.

    • @allanreford1440
      @allanreford1440 8 лет назад

      +sunshaped I know this and everyone has the right to have the means to create their own personal space. However, we can never expect Governments or Organisations to censor any form of speech - unless it's violent. If someone threatens to rape you and it seems like a real threat they have the right to phone to Police.

    • @sunshaped
      @sunshaped 8 лет назад +3

      +Allan Reford well, yes, the governments shouldn't be the ones censoring and blocking. that is very different than giving people the means to protect their own virtual personal spaces. it sounded like you were saying allowing even personal blocking leads to government and organizational censorship, and I wholly disagree, if that's the case. they are separate issues in my view.

    • @allanreford1440
      @allanreford1440 8 лет назад +3

    I really wish that I could have the privilege of friends like this woman.I love my friends, but we talk about nonsense so often. Anytime that I try to speak with them with regard to a globally relevant subject matter, I see their eyes drift and their attention slipping away from me.
    I feel that Lauren has spent an obscene amount of time just sitting, and thinking, And if we could just have everybody take the time to do this, the world may be a different place on a social level. The sheer truth to me is that we do not have enough of thinkers in the world, and an abundance of workers. She seems like an amazing gal - as do everybody else in that room. I wish I could be surrounded by more people whom are concerned with these types of things, and can have a relevant conversation past our own hobbies and interests.
