Think human trafficking and modern day slavery don't happen in New York City? Think again. They do. It's forced labor. It's someone being sold for sex against their will. It happens to women, children and men. We don't like calling it "being sold for sex". This phrase has a strange connotation, and sex does not encapsulate what happens to these victims, the devastation abuse enacted on their heart and body. We think it's better to call it for what it is, "being sold for rape and torture."
Shandra Woworuntu was born in Indonesia, and in 2001 she travelled to the USA expecting a job in the hospitality industry, but was instead forced to work as a prostitute. She eventually escaped her captors and helped convict her traffickers.
In 2010, Woworuntu was granted permanent residency in the USA. On December 16, 2015, President Obama appointed Woworuntu as one of 11 members of the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking and the council held their first meeting on October 18, 2016. Shandra Woworuntu is the founder of the Mentari Human Trafficking Survivor Empowerment Program, an organization aimed at empowering human trafficking victims. Listen to her testimony, share as much as you can, comment and donate for more stories.

@@RealWomenRealStories I think they may have meant the people telling their stories as UNFORTUNATELY as a survivor myself is quite unfortunate some people lie about these things, which imo makes them as bad as an abuser or worse, as they invalidate the community, give cover for abusers as they can create legal arguments based on "well so many lie for their own gain or attention etc" making the fight that much harder for real survivors and the mountain that much steeper. I pray you do your do diligence in researching to validate everything you promote. It is most vital and important that truth is upheld and the top priority else the entire well gets poisoned. My father once saw this on a flight home from Japan. The girl next to him said she was going to work as a waitress and make $4000 a month, and she had no idea who the contact names "Mister Wilson" was. She only had Yen with her and thought this "Wilson" was going to provide lodging. Fortunately the airport security wouldn't let her off the plane until she could verify where she was going.

This also happened in Vienna in 1999. One evening, we were in a tourist place with many bars (Schwedenplatz). A young girl (15-18 years old) asked us for directions. She didn't speak German or English. There was a boy standing next to us who came from the same country (eastern country), so he tried to help. The girl had been told that there were better job opportunities in Austria and that she could work in Vienna as a waitress. She was supposed to start working in a bar that evening. The name of the bar was written on a small piece of paper. Suddenly the boy was very concerned - he told us in German that it was not a bar but a brothel. However, he decided not to tell her this very important fact and just told her the way to the 'bar'.
I had the horrible feeling that i had let this innocent girl down, when i watched her leave, but i was very shy at the time.
Today, of course, I know that she was a victim of human trafficking. We could have prevented it but we all ignored it because it was inconvenient for us to warn her. It haunts me to this day.

My daughter and I were in hiding from my abusive, violent ex husband. A Christian group came to help us- turned out that it was a cultish, white slaver group. Did not realize it at first, but when it felt very wrong- ( there were many of them, two of us), I managed to get us free. They tried to kill me in a car"accident", and lock me in a crawlspace under a house and take my young daughter. It is so difficult to say, the terror is still there inside of me, unprocessed. If you see a girl dolled up looking like she's not comfortable with aggressive looking males. Record them or take a picture without drawing attention. Inform authorities. Immediately send the evidence to relatives who live long distance. Make sure you are not the only one in possession. Contact multiple authorities as soon as possible. If there is corruption in one branch it is likely isolated. So redundancy is your friend and it will act as evidence for a conviction. Most of these people are operating on false identities and they don't reveal their true name. So a picture will help to track them down.

I've read abt her story once. It was tragic.. i cried alot not just bcos we're from the same country, but her experience was traumatic. I worked abroad once too. And on my arrival, the man from the agency didn't transfer us straight to destination but had us stay over night at one agency with so many foreign worker girls. though we transferred to the destination in the morning, that one night was terrified me. I was worried that we would be human trafficking victims.. i couldn't, still can't imagine how terrified and desperate she felt.. thank God she could escaped, found the right people who helped her, and reunited with her daughter and mom.. semangat mbak Sandra

The Sheraton Hotel that she was brought to was across the street where I grew up in a housing project in Flushing, Queens. I would have never imagined this was going on just feet away from my home. We looked at that new hotel as a luxurious upgrade to our ghetto neighborhood.

I saw what looked like a young teen with a middle aged guy on the Staten Island Ferry. The way he interacted with her did not look like a father/daughter or platonic relationship. I watched to see if there was an opening for me to try to talk to her but nothing opened up and I've ALWAYS wondered if I missed a chance to help.

I always pray for your freedom and justice . God is not sleeping and will punish all those horrible people (can’t even say they deserve to be called people) or should we say monsters. They will be doomed on judgement day.
