To this day I still remember all the buttons for the moves like rocket air, pogo, method, benihana, madonna, etc.

Playing THPS4, this (THUG) and THUG 2 before elementary school with my friends and staying up all night playing these are some of the greatest memories. Plus the music in these games were the greatest. This game and THUG2 had probably the greatest soundtracks of any video game. I can not believe I’m 29 now and played this 21 years ago when this came out.. and besides playing this, my friends and I actually used to skate too. Landed my first kick flip in 2005 in 5th grade and Tre flipped Philly city hall 5 and 6 two years later in 2008 when I was 13. The early 2000s were such a great and amazing time compared to now. I live in NJ btw and I completely forgot the first level was in NJ. My favorite thing about these games, this game in particular, was how you could free skate and customize your skatepark with all these crazy things. I’m getting this game again.

I personally feel THUG, THUG 2, and THAW are tied for the best. They all had decent stories, some incredible locations, huge variations of tricks, great RPG elements, and the creator modes were fucking awesome. Plus each one of these three introduced unique and interesting elements unheard of in the Pro Skater games. THUG had driveable cars and the ability to walk, THUG 2 had an incredible story with special characters who had different vehicles with tricks of their own, and THAW of course introduced the idea of one immersive world without loading screens between levels (even though the routes between locations were just loading zones). I've played through almost every Tony Hawk game more than once and those were the best in my opinion. Each game is so different than the others it's near impossible to pick one.
This is such a time capsule of a game. Not only for the nostalgic memories it holds for a lot of us, but the game just encapsulates so much about this era. The attitudes, the trends, the humor. Games like this really helped shape so many of us.
Before social media these games made us go outside more,that was an era that deserves to be preserved in replayed over and over again somewhere in this universe
