Whoever told you the sky light information, only told you a half truth. Yes, they are prone to leaking. If you check it yearly and hire someone to maintain the seals when they begin to degrade. They can last a strong 20-30 years. Sure at will cost you a couple hundred every few years, but it is worth it for the light in my opinion. I have a sky light and it has never once leaked.
