My Favorite Watercolor Reds: In this video, I share my favorite red watercolors paints. I arrange all my red colors from warm to cool colors. Then I give my recommendation for the best three red colors for beginning watercolor artists. I conclude with my five favorite watercolor reds #favoriteredcolors #watercolor #warmcool

If you are a beginner in watercolor, I recommend you limit the colors on your palette. You can start with a warm and cool red:
1. Warm: Pyrrol Scarlet (or similar)
2. Cool: Quinacridone Rose (or similar)
You might want to also add a "middle" red to the set:
3. Middle: Pyrrol Red (or similar)

Loved this, so helpful as I’m building my colours. I love mixing but I’m a colour addict. It’s like food, there aren’t enough days to eat all the flavours and there aren’t enough days to paint using so many colours, especially traditional watercolour, its literally painting with tinted water. Thankyou, my favourite visual pastimes as you may have gleaned are cooking shows and painting vids.

I have been paying for a long time but mostly landscapes with the same pallet choices. Been looking for some experimental upgrades so loving these videos . It's good to see the colours and the choices artists make in their selection

Great idea to swatch paints in this way, especially when you already have too many and are getting lost a bit - like me!
I just bought a new Alizarin Crimson today, Schmincke Horadam brand, it's a beautiful paint for a cool red. I bought it to replace my depleated tube of the Alizarin Crimson by Art Creation.
I like the Naphthamide Maroon by Daniel Smith that you have chosen here. DS make wonderful highly pigmented paints in general. .

I recently bought a wonderful orangey red Daniel Smith paint: Mayan Orange. It's a stunning colour which I think you would like.
I've started using smaller sets of paints, sometimes just 8 maximum: 3 primaries, 4 secondaries and 2 neutrals. It's helping learn more about colour mixing and values.
I've also got a slightly bigger pallete that is set up similar to your recommendations here, with a warm and cool of each primary, a couple of mid-tomes, some earth colours and some neutrals.
But I still have lots of individual paints of lower quality brands like Van Gogh and Art Creation. However, they have their uses, and bit by bit they are getting used. I just wish I had waited and saved the money to by fewer, but much better quality paints.
I've heard good things about Mayan Orange. I may have to look into that one. Thanks.

Awesome! Glad I watch your channel. I picked up 5 of the ones you mentioned here if Quin. magenta, and Quin. red count. And I also ordered a Holbein Opera. It never ends does it? LOL

My favorites (reds)as a fellow artist are quinacridone coral(DaVinci ‘s pigment looks the same also), DS pyrrol scarlet, pyrrol crimson, alizarin crimson (pv19 DaVinci), Sennelier ‘s Rose Madder Lake PV19- it does not dull down like Daniel Smith’s quinacridone rose, I use quinacridone magenta, Perylene Violet and Perylene Maroon. I keep my cool and warm reds separated and don’t have the need for a middle red because a warm one and a cool one = a neutral. I mix my own purples with the blues whether granulating or non granulating. Although I have a transparent red/ orange it isn’t on the palette because azo yellow mixes well along with the deep Hansa yellow ,which is more lightfast than the light Hansa to make an orange. The thing one enjoys painting dictates the palette. I enjoy florals as well as landscapes so my home palette contains the most colors. I love golden ochres and ultramarine violet which mixes well with a little red ultramarine to make a lavender watered down without the need to add white gouache. There are so many mixes to make lovely browns with the Perylene family and a tube goes a long way. Oh I have do have straight up Quinacridone violet PV19 that way I can spike my quin rose or what I use Rose Madder Lake and turn it into quinacridone Lilac just that simple. My tube of quin violet and ultramarine violet stay in a tube unless I need to spike a mix from my palette. For many years I have figured and worked out “hacks” to save money and update my color theory to great colors with no shame on admitting how little I pay. There are many colors that are honestly redundant but sell but if one really does their homework and just doesn’t buy what another artist might like then you will be really content with your palette.😊

A red I quite like and is not in your list is the earthy PR101. Goes by different names, in my set it's called english red.
Ooooh. Interesting. I just looked up the Daniel Smith version. It looks almost brown. It is lightfast, granulating and transparent. My favorite pigment qualities. Thanks for sharing. Here's the DS version - amzn.to/3uljuos

I'm desperately trying to find a swatch video on Geranium Lake, the pigments are PR 149, 166, and 170. The paint is Grumbacher Academy, they do have all their color blocks on their sight, but sometimes the colors are a bit lighter than the actual color in person, and that's why I need to see a demo on it. Would you be able to help me? 😕
Hi Dora. I actually don't have that color in my studio. In fact, I don't own any Grumbacher Academy paints. So...unfortunately, I don't think I can be of any assistance. Maybe your local art store can be of assistance. Have a great day.

Curious, would Naphthamide Maroon made good purples? It looks slightly brown/grey and I worry it would make a muddy color. Definitely putting Quin Lilac on my next list to buy (in 6 months as I just got my new colors this weekend).

Have you used claret pr12 ? Its also a shade of red.
Hi. Thanks for the question. No, actually I haven't heard of it. I took a quick look at the handprint.com online reference and it is not listed there. Then I found a listing on Dr Kano's website here: otokano.com/colors-by-pigment/pigment-red/#PR12 It is beautiful -- more of a magenta, I would say.
@@KrisDeBruineStudio from what I know it's deep red. PR 12 it seems is fugitive. But have not used this colour, so I wanted to know if artists have found this colour useful or not.
