yes, people who are in psychosis can act as if they know it is not right, can sometimes develop a completely new persona, but can also just join in the conversation without 'understanding' it, as if it is immediately repelled or forgotten, making contact and getting through to someone very difficult generally.

For example, Gypsy Rose’s mother poisoned her and pretended she (GR) had cancer just for attention. That’s munchausen by proxy, a sub type of HPD. Now GR appears to have it (HPD)- going to great lengths to stay relevant and all eyes on her. Edit: To be more accurate this is a criteria of HPD. If they don’t have at least 5 they don’t have the disorder but CAN have “traits”. Either way there’s something wrong with you if you fake X for attention.
I thought of the same, can also be Munchausen disorder if its on a deeper level rather than just doing it purely for attention. Munchausen disorder does have a lot of correlation with narcissism. I feel like most people with Munchausen disorder have narcissistic tendencies (more so than an average person) at the very least but not all narcissists have Munchausen disorder. I am just speculating though !!! if there’s a psychologist here correct me if I’m wrong ❤️

It kinda makes me sad seeing content creators who’ve ’fallen off’ happily embarrassing or degrading themselves online just to keep making a living. I can only imagine how hard of a transition it would be to go from RUclips for 10 years to working a sales job, but some of these people really just need to accept the truth and get a sustainable job. Tana was saying about Jason, how it’s way more embarrassing to watch him panhandle on TikTok than it would be to see him selling some leggings and I couldn’t agree more. It’s almost like they need the attention and it all seems so unhealthy after a certain point.
To be fair though I can say that once you have broken out of the corporate world it is extraordinarily difficult to get back into it again. I've been self-employed for about a year and a half now and even though I'm struggling so badly financially just the thought of the misery and drudgery of working a corporate job again and just how soul crushing that was, how I was just constantly miserable and dreading EVERY DAY to the point where I was only getting like 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night because of how much I was dreading the next day... that's so hard to go back to. I honestly don't know if my incredibly fragile mental health could handle it at this point, I genuinely (and I truly sincerely mean this) fear that if I were to go back to the corporate lifestyle I would have a complete psychological break. I was so close to having one before and now going back to it after tasting what it's like to actually have time for myself and creativity and not having the constant corporate overlords breathing down my neck I genuinely fear I would have a meltdown in that environment. In spite of the building debt and constant anxiety over my finances on just a day-to-day level my mental health is so much better than it's ever been in my life.
I always assumed she said she "faked it" back then because she felt bad and embarrassed that something so vulnerable was public; and saying she faked it was a way to reclaim some power or agency on how it was perceived. It became a "this was my master plan" instead of "I lost control over myself and my situation, and everyone saw". If you saw the younow videos, you could see someone genuinely already dangerously intoxicated keep drinking being very sad and angry, and not someone trying to imitate or exaggerate symptoms of mental illness.
It's a hard thing to admit to yourself. Everybody wants to believe that they are above becoming an addict, but the truth is no one is. Under certain circumstances that can happen to anyone.

I think the "faking" mental illness situation comes down to something Swoop says often " Two things can be true at the same time". There was & is probably a mental health issue and struggle while the decision was made to play up what her idea of"crazy" was. I think both are very much true.
True. Personally I think it might be a case of her struggling with burnout or depression but not realizing it, and it not being taken seriously by the peopel in her life. I can see how someone might "act out" in other ways to try to get some sort of reaction that they aren't getting otherwise.
I think one of the biggest elements of Bryland and Slava marriage that you missed is the fact that they got married so quickly to get him a visa. And there were rumours from the beginning that this was a green card marriage. And maybe thats why they are still married, or stayed married longer than their relationship lasted. One thing this makes me think of is the possibility that it's easier to say one pretended to go crazy for money than admit to really be losing it. If she actually was going through it then it makes sense that when you start to realise what you've been doing Infront of everyone at your lowest, that'd you'd wanna hide it and pretend like it wasn't real, like it wasn't you.
Especially given the stigma surrounding addiction, which if I have it right was happening around that same younow time, it definitely seems like an easier out to say one faked everything instead of admitting to honestly struggling and being an addict. Maybe she was playing things up in a way that wasn't entirely genuine, or maybe it was a weird coping mechanism for her real struggles.
Re: the mental illness 'faking' thing, it appears she straddling the line between pretending, and simply letting the curtain down that creators keep up to curate how they portray themselves to the world. While she didn't show herself actaully taking opioids, she put on display how she acted while taking them to cope with the feeling that her world was falling apart- while maybe hamming it up a bit
Honestly it seems like her whole "downfall" is due to grasping at the wrong straws to attempt to control the life crumbling around her. I can absolutely see someone's mental illness taking them for a ride against their will, even when they're consciously making bad decisions. I know she said she was faking, but my heart still goes out to her.
It could also be that she said she was faking earlier bc she was in denial and also didn’t want people to think she was seriously mentally ill so she tried to distance herself from it. That being said, it doesn’t mean she wasn’t acting up more than she usually would or putting a camera in front of her when she knew an episode was coming to try and earn pity points/attention and hopefully gain something monetarily from it.
yeah having mental illness or suddenly being aware of it comes with a sort of grief and denial. People who have been diagnosed have phases where they still dont believe it, especially in the beginning of a diagnosis. Its weird
Whatever is the case, she definitely had (or has) issues to deal with, and the fact she made a real apology - without blaming anyone else or 'the circumstances' - and took accountability for her past actions publicly makes me root for her too. Less gross and most importantly: it means no crime was committed. I feel the fact it was an inflatable turkey was omitted from this video is a big shortcoming, as someone who commits sexual acts with animals clearly belong in a different category than someone who commits such acts with inanimate objects.
As a smegs worker in a country where it’s legal and decriminalised… I’ve been doing this for 4 years and every single working girl I’ve come across, including myself, started this job because a man put them in debt or it became a coercion control scenario. That’s not to say every working girl has this reason, but every working girl I’ve met, and every working girl I know’s working friends, in all of the houses these girls have been in and every girl they have met, have.
Not to mention, so many people who do SW in nations where it's criminalized or only parts are allowed (filmed/video/pictures etc) do so because it is literally the only viable option. You find so many disabled and/or trans people in SW because the options outside of it are often homelessness or forced poverty from the gov't (in the US, disabled people are given any federal assistance unless they're under the poverty line, and that is in income alone, not including substantial medical bills). There are women in the US who are actively dying of cancer who do SW because they don't have the physical ability to work outside of the house and can usually make more than the forced poverty under the gov't. It's terrifying that it's not really a free choice, but rather a last ditch effort to be able to both eat and have shelter.

My honest opinion when someone fakes illness or mental illness there is an underlying feeling of attention seeking behavior which does line up with Breland's statement that she wanted to use it for views. However this sort of behavior does reflect a form of mental illness in itself. How isolated or rejected must a person feel to fake something so serious just for attention good or bad? Especially in her case it does seem that she was in her words going through it. I do not think it was only for financial reasons. However the true reason will remain unknown.
not to diagnose but this is common in narcissistic personality disorders. like many tiktokers these days who diagnose themselves with every acronym under the sun, i do think there's an element of mental illness there.
Not an expert by any means, but there's literally a mental disorder called fictitious disorder, often called Munchausen's, which is typically associated with faking or inducing physical symptoms but I think it applies to faking mental illnesses as well. I've seen a lot of discourse about "Munchausen's by social media", and it's confusing but super interesting, and I guess kind of sad.
I'd say this also shows in kids that are wanting attention. I knew kids that would show self-harm wounds and were very vocal about harming themselves because they were hurt and alone.

I could see individuals with histrionic as well as narcissistic and even antisocial personalities showing behaviour like this in various seriousness dependent on the given situation, possible goals and what's the specific secondary gain of faking illness or even being actually ill in the given circumstance. All of these types of personalities show stronger tendencies for manipulative behaviour, so they all have a higher likelihood to maybe engage in the described behaviour in some circumstances. Not me being diagnosing anybody here, just thinking hypothetically!

Possibly, but if taking addictive medications regularly for over a year, I’d think being physically dependant would be a given. But I’m not a doctor, just someone who was given way too much oxycodone 10 years ago for a long period of time, and it still haunts me to this day.
I had literally no idea who Breland was, but when Swoop posts a video and I see it, I will click and sing "swoop, swoop-swoop-swoop" so my husband knows I'm only reachable if he makes me coffee or there's a fire. Oh, and on Slava being gay... In Russia, especially since he's now a semi-public person, that's a death sentence. As someone with self-destructive tendencies, who spent a while talking with my therapist about how I always feel like I’m “faking” or “exaggerating”, I have a different outlook to some extent. In her position, I could see myself feeling like I am already faking everything (even if she had real mental illness) and therefore just believing that I’m already trash enough I might as well “lean into” it and at least maybe make enough money to survive. I can’t see into her mind, but this is one I really could put myself into the shoes (based on the way she spoke about it), and could see how I could end up like her.

There is difference between addiction and dependence. The average human is dependent on food, for example, but that doesn't make the average human addicted to food. It is also possible to be an addict without the physical dependence. Those addictions are tricky and can be more difficult to heal from because there is something other than the typical reinforcements of dependency and detox keeping the addiction going.
It sounds like my friends justification for mania. She when still manic will say she's pretending when her extremely erratic behaviour is pointed out to her. She is sick, but often when at her sickest she still thinks she's acting normal, so she thinks she's faking when it showed to be 'crazy' thinking

I watched Primik’s video a while ago and then started following her. I feel like her story was a perfect storm. I’ve had a mental breakdown and it cost me a degree. Given the school was one of those scam schools. But I was so messed up that I was also fired from my internship because they thought I had a brain injury that affected my cognitive function. My anxiety was so bad at that time that I barely remember much. I went into therapy and got medications to smooth my brain out and I’m soooo much better than I was. It’s a hard road. I still have moments but it’s so much better than it was.

@@skyleradams5566 no, gay people don't get charged just for being gay - though, a lot of LGBT people are usually afraid to show feelings in public and be openly gay just because it is a very grey area. The "gay propaganda" law is primarily used to slap 18+ marker on media (shows, movies, games, books). Up until the recent few years there were several gay clubs and regular queer parties in some major cities; LGBT people were using dating apps to find mates. This all changed pretty drastically in the last few years though and is a vastly different story. However, back then, there wouldn't be any problems for Slava, assuming he lived in a fairly progressive environment.

Hi Swoop, therapist here: mental illness can definitely cause someone to think that faking a mental illness is an appropriate way to get what they want/need, such as sociopathy! Sociopaths that check the DSM boxes would think this is fine, and also-an apology usually wouldn’t be sincere, as they have a hard time with empathy.

I'd never encountered her online until stumbling upon her True Crime channel. I'm glad she stopped doing that -- she did not handle the subject matter with tact or compassion and spent a lot of time really focusing on the gore of it.
I would NEVER diagnose someone online who I have no relationship with. But as a psychology student, someone who displays these traits would fit within the borderline/bipolar diagnosis. Sometimes these traits can be drug induced as well.
Psych/Neurosci PhD here :-) Completely agree, cannot make a diagnosis online. I could see these traits in a patient with BPD or Bipolar Disorder. My brain jumps to a few others first, mostly due to the admission that the malingering was for views. Speaking strictly to observable behaviors, hypotheticals, and how those correlate/line up to some DSM boxes, malingering is exceedingly common in factitious disorder, antisocial personality disorder/sociopathy, narcissistic pd, factitious disorder, and histrionic pd come to mind. During my clinical rotations we’d see a remarkable number of people with the aforementioned disorders fail validity checks on malingering in neuropsych batteries. It was essentially clockwork. Patients with these illnesses saw no problem with malingering, were always shocked when we let them know that they were malingering (as they frequently assumed they had outsmarted the test), and showed varying degrees of remorse/care/embarrassment/responsibility upon confrontation.

I do not know this young lady, but, it is not neurotypical behavior to fake a condition, however faking a medical condition or exaggeration of a condition is a sign of an underlying mental health condition. At the least, pathological lying, which is a symptom of many personality or narcissistic disorders or factitious disorder, requires treatment. I hope she is seeking treatment, care or therapy.

As someone who had a full on mental break down from family pressure, being alone and going through a brutal course to be a care aid, I can 1000% sympathize with both Swoop and Breland. It’s awful, the experience left me with depression, constant self doubt and self loathing that will never go away. I have really dark episodes some days. But thankful I am trying to stay more positive, but it’s always a tremendous amount of work. To your question of if there could there be a mental illness that causes a person to think that faking mental illness is a good idea-as a mental health professional, I can say that the likely answer is that the person is emotionally immature and lacks the personal development and problem-solving skills to tackle their problem more appropriately.

As a psych/neurosci phd, we also see this malingering and faking behaviors in some patients with histrionic pd, antisocial pd/sociopathy, narcissistic pd, factitious disorder, and sometimes in borderline pd. I can not and will not make a diagnosis online. However, I see this behavior A-LOT in certain disorders. Insecurity can certainly be the cause, but I did also want to answer mama swoop’s question and say that there are most certainly a number of disorders, particularly certain subsets of personality disorders, where malingering is either a significant core DSM diagnostic criterion or at the very least a frequent comorbidity.
I can’t remember who I heard it from, but I do think it was an actual therapist, who said anyone who “fakes” a mental illness, has one, it just may not be the one they’re faking, it was when faking DID was a big thing.
Last year I saw her trying to reclaim her channel in a seemingly wholesome way, I saw that she was trying to turn over a new leaf and I felt so sorry for her. I was sure to comment and like to show support in the hopes she wouldn't get discouraged or give up. I assumed she did have a mental illness and felt sad that she was trying to claw her way back up in life. But I lost patience for her fairly quickly. I was also SO surprised that no one was discussing her at the time, as her actions were so incredibly wild and all over the place with the 'death' of her channel, that I thought surely someone was must be covering this. Now it's crazy to see it all blowing up this year. I truly hope for her healing and finding the right path for her

An individual can actually experience psychosis when they are sleep deprived. 36 hours of sleep deprivation can cause hallucinations, 48 can trigger depression, 72 can see hallucinations increase in intensity and morph into full-blown delusions. Which could explain some of the things you describe.
My lack of sleep from CPTSD flashbacks led to having pneumonia, I ended up in hospital and the nurse said I was seriously lucky to be alive. Didn't feel that way. I now live with an immunocomprimised (sp?) status and my lungs have never been the same. Most nights I struggle to get more than 3 hours of sleep and constantly worry about getting sick. Having trauma is a death sentence.
39:49 i work in mental health and it is a huge passion/hyper fixation/special interest for me. I would say there are many different mental illnesses that could allow that thought process to occur, even with many commonly diagnosed ones. It all depends on their mental health, and by that i dont mean "mentally normal" i mean are they taking care of themselves mentally for whatever their needs are? Someone with untreated BPD could use this as a manipulation tactic if they feel theyre going to be abandoned for example. Someone who is taking care of themselves, gaining self awareness, going to therapy and using tools at their disposal most likely would not react the same. Someone with narcissistic personality disorder could also use this in many many ways. Sympathy, painting you the villian ("i was mentally ill and they left me"), attention seeking. But it depends if they are willing to take the possibility of being seen as "weak". The thing about mental health overall is its so particular to every individual. Not only in what symptoms theyll present but also in why, and so many details can change the entire scenario. I overall find you cant truly treat and heal some of these wounds, or even get to a point of living with them effectively until you pinpoint the sorce of the injury. Once that revelation is had, self awareness and understanding can begin.
I, too, immediately thought of BPD and the various manipulation tactics/attention-seeking behavior when they feel they are going to be abandoned. Whatever the case, I hope she gets to a better place soon.

Why does she sound just like Gypsy 😂. I’ve never been so glad to have two kids that have never wanted to be internet famous. As someone who is diagnosed with bipolar, I went through a mental breakdown after a DV/SA almost cost me my life. I became addicted to Xanax and just wanted to numb my entire existence. I will say, I was a “functioning” addict as I had two small children and still worked everyday. I just lacked a support system and had no one. But I see someone also in a mental breakdown or at the very least someone with a manic episode. Adding alcohol and different substances only makes that manic spiral even more chaotic. She suffered a lot of trauma in a short time. For some reason she doesn’t want ppl to see her “vulnerable” so she pretends it was all fake. It almost seemed as though she was in a psychosis whether due to drugs, alcohol and mental illness, I don’t know. Alls I know is that I’ve been there and my entire neurological system never came back. I now live with an autoimmune disorder that affects my spine and live in chronic pain for over 12 years now. I am disabled. My body couldn’t take anymore trauma.
The best and most accurate thing my counselor ever told me when we were talking about issues regarding mental health and why some people act the way they do is "Negative attention is still attention". I wouldn't be surprised if that had some bearing on this whole thing.People will self-sabotage in order to get negative attention because sometimes it's what they believe they deserve. When you go to bed late around 3am sometime in the 90s and wake up and its 30 years later you've waisted your entire lie on opiates you will know at that time nothing but despair for the road you chose and the life you've lost to a drug its the shit pit of a destiny you don't want.
Licensed therapist here, the behavior is called "malingering". I wouldn't go so far as identifying a specific diagnosis without assessing her. But malingering is the "faking" aspect.

39:49 that *is* a fascinating question. In my experience with mental illness, there is often a lack of feeling in control of your mental disposition. If I were to ever choose to fake a mental illness, it would likely be because of just that - I CHOSE to do so. It would put me in control of the situation which is something so apparently missing from my reality. Is it a type of mental illness specifically? No. But it may offer a little insight into Breland’s choice.

yes, people who are in psychosis can act as if they know it is not right, can sometimes develop a completely new persona, but can also just join in the conversation without 'understanding' it, as if it is immediately repelled or forgotten, making contact and getting through to someone very difficult generally.

For example, Gypsy Rose’s mother poisoned her and pretended she (GR) had cancer just for attention. That’s munchausen by proxy, a sub type of HPD. Now GR appears to have it (HPD)- going to great lengths to stay relevant and all eyes on her.
Edit: To be more accurate this is a criteria of HPD. If they don’t have at least 5 they don’t have the disorder but CAN have “traits”. Either way there’s something wrong with you if you fake X for attention.
I thought of the same, can also be Munchausen disorder if its on a deeper level rather than just doing it purely for attention. Munchausen disorder does have a lot of correlation with narcissism. I feel like most people with Munchausen disorder have narcissistic tendencies (more so than an average person) at the very least but not all narcissists have Munchausen disorder. I am just speculating though !!! if there’s a psychologist here correct me if I’m wrong ❤️

To be fair though I can say that once you have broken out of the corporate world it is extraordinarily difficult to get back into it again. I've been self-employed for about a year and a half now and even though I'm struggling so badly financially just the thought of the misery and drudgery of working a corporate job again and just how soul crushing that was, how I was just constantly miserable and dreading EVERY DAY to the point where I was only getting like 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night because of how much I was dreading the next day... that's so hard to go back to. I honestly don't know if my incredibly fragile mental health could handle it at this point, I genuinely (and I truly sincerely mean this) fear that if I were to go back to the corporate lifestyle I would have a complete psychological break. I was so close to having one before and now going back to it after tasting what it's like to actually have time for myself and creativity and not having the constant corporate overlords breathing down my neck I genuinely fear I would have a meltdown in that environment. In spite of the building debt and constant anxiety over my finances on just a day-to-day level my mental health is so much better than it's ever been in my life.
I always assumed she said she "faked it" back then because she felt bad and embarrassed that something so vulnerable was public; and saying she faked it was a way to reclaim some power or agency on how it was perceived. It became a "this was my master plan" instead of "I lost control over myself and my situation, and everyone saw". If you saw the younow videos, you could see someone genuinely already dangerously intoxicated keep drinking being very sad and angry, and not someone trying to imitate or exaggerate symptoms of mental illness.

I think the "faking" mental illness situation comes down to something Swoop says often " Two things can be true at the same time". There was & is probably a mental health issue and struggle while the decision was made to play up what her idea of"crazy" was. I think both are very much true.
True. Personally I think it might be a case of her struggling with burnout or depression but not realizing it, and it not being taken seriously by the peopel in her life. I can see how someone might "act out" in other ways to try to get some sort of reaction that they aren't getting otherwise.
I think one of the biggest elements of Bryland and Slava marriage that you missed is the fact that they got married so quickly to get him a visa. And there were rumours from the beginning that this was a green card marriage. And maybe thats why they are still married, or stayed married longer than their relationship lasted. Slava would get deported. And idk if Bryland could face legal consequences or at least be investigated.
Slave got documentation through other means, though. It's actually extremely difficult to get status through marriage.

One thing this makes me think of is the possibility that it's easier to say one pretended to go crazy for money than admit to really be losing it. If she actually was going through it then it makes sense that when you start to realise what you've been doing Infront of everyone at your lowest, that'd you'd wanna hide it and pretend like it wasn't real, like it wasn't you.
Especially given the stigma surrounding addiction, which if I have it right was happening around that same younow time, it definitely seems like an easier out to say one faked everything instead of admitting to honestly struggling and being an addict. Re: the mental illness 'faking' thing, it appears she straddling the line between pretending, and simply letting the curtain down that creators keep up to curate how they portray themselves to the world. While she didn't show herself actaully taking opioids, she put on display how she acted while taking them to cope with the feeling that her world was falling apart- while maybe hamming it up a bit
Honestly it seems like her whole "downfall" is due to grasping at the wrong straws to attempt to control the life crumbling around her. I can absolutely see someone's mental illness taking them for a ride against their will, even when they're consciously making bad decisions. I know she said she was faking, but my heart still goes out to her.
It could also be that she said she was faking earlier bc she was in denial and also didn’t want people to think she was seriously mentally ill so she tried to distance herself from it. That being said, it doesn’t mean she wasn’t acting up more than she usually would or putting a camera in front of her when she knew an episode was coming to try and earn pity points/attention and hopefully gain something monetarily from it.

Whatever is the case, she definitely had (or has) issues to deal with, and the fact she made a real apology - without blaming anyone else or 'the circumstances' - and took accountability for her past actions publicly makes me root for her too. As a smegs worker in a country where it’s legal and decriminalised… I’ve been doing this for 4 years and every single working girl I’ve come across, including myself, started this job because a man put them in debt or it became a coercion control scenario. That’s not to say every working girl has this reason, but every working girl I’ve met, and every working girl I know’s working friends, in all of the houses these girls have been in and every girl they have met, have.
Not to mention, so many people who do SW in nations where it's criminalized or only parts are allowed (filmed/video/pictures etc) do so because it is literally the only viable option. You find so many disabled and/or trans people in SW because the options outside of it are often homelessness or forced poverty from the gov't (in the US, disabled people are given any federal assistance unless they're under the poverty line, and that is in income alone, not including substantial medical bills). There are women in the US who are actively dying of cancer who do SW because they don't have the physical ability to work outside of the house and can usually make more than the forced poverty under the gov't. It's terrifying that it's not really a free choice, but rather a last ditch effort to be able to both eat and have shelter.

My honest opinion when someone fakes illness or mental illness there is an underlying feeling of attention seeking behavior which does line up with Breland's statement that she wanted to use it for views. However this sort of behavior does reflect a form of mental illness in itself. How isolated or rejected must a person feel to fake something so serious just for attention good or bad? Especially in her case it does seem that she was in her words going through it. I do not think it was only for financial reasons. However the true reason will remain unknown.
Faking a condition means there is an underlying mental health condition
not to diagnose but this is common in narcissistic personality disorders. like many tiktokers these days who diagnose themselves with every acronym under the sun, i do think there's an element of mental illness there.
Not an expert by any means, but there's literally a mental disorder called fictitious disorder, often called Munchausen's, which is typically associated with faking or inducing physical symptoms but I think it applies to faking mental illnesses as well. I've seen a lot of discourse about "Munchausen's by social media", and it's confusing but super interesting, and I guess kind of sad.
I'd say this also shows in kids that are wanting attention. I knew kids that would show self-harm wounds and were very vocal about harming themselves because they were hurt and alone.

I could see individuals with histrionic as well as narcissistic and even antisocial personalities showing behaviour like this in various seriousness dependent on the given situation, possible goals and what's the specific secondary gain of faking illness or even being actually ill in the given circumstance. All of these types of personalities show stronger tendencies for manipulative behaviour, so they all have a higher likelihood to maybe engage in the described behaviour in some circumstances.

Possibly, but if taking addictive medications regularly for over a year, I’d think being physically dependant would be a given. But I’m not a doctor, just someone who was given way too much oxycodone 10 years ago for a long period of time, and it still haunts me to this day.

As someone with self-destructive tendencies, who spent a while talking with my therapist about how I always feel like I’m “faking” or “exaggerating”, I have a different outlook to some extent. In her position, I could see myself feeling like I am already faking everything (even if she had real mental illness) and therefore just believing that I’m already trash enough I might as well “lean into” it and at least maybe make enough money to survive. I can’t see into her mind, but this is one I really could put myself into the shoes (based on the way she spoke about it), and could see how I could end up like her.

There is difference between addiction and dependence. The average human is dependent on food, for example, but that doesn't make the average human addicted to food. It is also possible to be an addict without the physical dependence. Those addictions are tricky and can be more difficult to heal from because there is something other than the typical reinforcements of dependency and detox keeping the addiction going.
She was psychologically dependent but not physically dependent enough that the withdrawal didn't mess her up.

She is sick, but often when at her sickest she still thinks she's acting normal, so she thinks she's faking when it showed to be 'crazy' thinking

As someone who struggles with bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses… I will NEVER understand people who take disorders?!? I have to take medication in order to somewhat function. I’ve been hospitalized, I’m in therapy… this isn’t something you should take having. It’s never glamours… so sad that people do this on purpose

I watched Primik’s video a while ago and then started following her. I feel like her story was a perfect storm. I’ve had a mental breakdown and it cost me a degree. Given the school was one of those scam schools. But I was so messed up that I was also fired from my internship because they thought I had a brain injury that affected my cognitive function. My anxiety was so bad at that time that I barely remember much. I went into therapy and got medications to smooth my brain out and I’m soooo much better than I was. It’s a hard road. I still have moments but it’s so much better than it was.
I sort of feel like the idea looking for is "histrionic behavior/personality disorder". Which always gives me the ick when given to a woman due to the root word and its misogynic tendrils towards women's health and mental health specifically.
She used to be someone who was SO POPULAR when I was a teenager. 10+ years ago this woman made content that was weird but not horrible then one day she just started making the most off the wall, backwards content that extended far beyond weird and watching her became difficult. I’d honestly forgotten about her existence until someone brought her up recently and what her weird relationship with Slava had morphed into and ALLL the “period hack” video memories etc came flooding back 😂💀😮💨

@@skyleradams5566 no, gay people don't get charged just for being gay - though, a lot of LGBT people are usually afraid to show feelings in public and be openly gay just because it is a very grey area. The "gay propaganda" law is primarily used to slap 18+ marker on media (shows, movies, games, books). Up until the recent few years there were several gay clubs and regular queer parties in some major cities; LGBT people were using dating apps to find mates.
This all changed pretty drastically in the last few years though and is a vastly different story. However, back then, there wouldn't be any problems for Slava, assuming he lived in a fairly progressive environment.

Hi Swoop, therapist here: mental illness can definitely cause someone to think that faking a mental illness is an appropriate way to get what they want/need, such as sociopathy! Sociopaths that check the DSM boxes would think this is fine, and also-an apology usually wouldn’t be sincere, as they have a hard time with empathy.

I would NEVER diagnose someone online who I have no relationship with. But as a psychology student, someone who displays these traits would fit within the borderline/bipolar diagnosis. Sometimes these traits can be drug induced as well.
Psych/Neurosci PhD here :-) Completely agree, cannot make a diagnosis online. I could see these traits in a patient with BPD or Bipolar Disorder. My brain jumps to a few others first, mostly due to the admission that the malingering was for views. Speaking strictly to observable behaviors, hypotheticals, and how those correlate/line up to some DSM boxes, malingering is exceedingly common in factitious disorder, antisocial personality disorder/sociopathy, narcissistic pd, factitious disorder, and histrionic pd come to mind. During my clinical rotations we’d see a remarkable number of people with the aforementioned disorders fail validity checks on malingering in neuropsych batteries. It was essentially clockwork. Patients with these illnesses saw no problem with malingering, were always shocked when we let them know that they were malingering (as they frequently assumed they had outsmarted the test), and showed varying degrees of remorse/care/embarrassment/responsibility upon confrontation.

I do not know this young lady, but, it is not neurotypical behavior to fake a condition, however faking a medical condition or exaggeration of a condition is a sign of an underlying mental health condition. At the least, pathological lying, which is a symptom of many personality or narcissistic disorders or factitious disorder, requires treatment.

As someone who had a full on mental break down from family pressure, being alone and going through a brutal course to be a care aid, I can 1000% sympathize with both Swoop and Breland.
It’s awful, the experience left me with depression, constant self doubt and self loathing that will never go away. I have really dark episodes some days. But thankful I am trying to stay more positive, but it’s always a tremendous amount of work.

To your question of if there could there be a mental illness that causes a person to think that faking mental illness is a good idea-as a mental health professional, I can say that the likely answer is that the person is emotionally immature and lacks the personal development and problem-solving skills to tackle their problem more appropriately.

As a psych/neurosci phd, we also see this malingering and faking behaviors in some patients with histrionic pd, antisocial pd/sociopathy, narcissistic pd, factitious disorder, and sometimes in borderline pd. I can not and will not make a diagnosis online. However, I see this behavior A-LOT in certain disorders. Insecurity can certainly be the cause, but I did also want to answer mama swoop’s question and say that there are most certainly a number of disorders, particularly certain subsets of personality disorders, where malingering is either a significant core DSM diagnostic criterion or at the very least a frequent comorbidity.

Last year I saw her trying to reclaim her channel in a seemingly wholesome way, I saw that she was trying to turn over a new leaf and I felt so sorry for her. I was sure to comment and like to show support in the hopes she wouldn't get discouraged or give up. I assumed she did have a mental illness and felt sad that she was trying to claw her way back up in life. But I lost patience for her fairly quickly.
I was also SO surprised that no one was discussing her at the time, as her actions were so incredibly wild and all over the place with the 'death' of her channel, that I thought surely someone was must be covering this. Now it's crazy to see it all blowing up this year. I truly hope for her healing and finding the right path for her

Edit: Your doctor was right. An individual can actually experience psychosis when they are sleep deprived. 36 hours of sleep deprivation can cause hallucinations, 48 can trigger depression, 72 can see hallucinations increase in intensity and morph into full-blown delusions. Which could explain some of the things you describe.
My lack of sleep from CPTSD flashbacks led to having pneumonia, I ended up in hospital and the nurse said I was seriously lucky to be alive. Didn't feel that way.
I now live with an immunocomprimised (sp?) status and my lungs have never been the same. Most nights I struggle to get more than 3 hours of sleep and constantly worry about getting sick. Having trauma is a death sentence.

I would say there are many different mental illnesses that could allow that thought process to occur, even with many commonly diagnosed ones.
It all depends on their mental health, and by that i dont mean "mentally normal" i mean are they taking care of themselves mentally for whatever their needs are?
Someone with untreated BPD could use this as a manipulation tactic if they feel theyre going to be abandoned for example.
Someone who is taking care of themselves, gaining self awareness, going to therapy and using tools at their disposal most likely would not react the same.
Someone with narcissistic personality disorder could also use this in many many ways. Sympathy, painting you the villian ("i was mentally ill and they left me"), attention seeking. But it depends if they are willing to take the possibility of being seen as "weak".
The thing about mental health overall is its so particular to every individual. Not only in what symptoms theyll present but also in why, and so many details can change the entire scenario.
I overall find you cant truly treat and heal some of these wounds, or even get to a point of living with them effectively until you pinpoint the sorce of the injury. Once that revelation is had, self awareness and understanding can begin.
I, too, immediately thought of BPD and the various manipulation tactics/attention-seeking behavior when they feel they are going to be abandoned. Whatever the case, I hope she gets to a better place soon.

As someone who is diagnosed with bipolar, I went through a mental breakdown after a DV/SA almost cost me my life. I became addicted to Xanax and just wanted to numb my entire existence. I will say, I was a “functioning” addict as I had two small children and still worked everyday. I just lacked a support system and had no one. But I see someone also in a mental breakdown or at the very least someone with a manic episode. Adding alcohol and different substances only makes that manic spiral even more chaotic. She suffered a lot of trauma in a short time. For some reason she doesn’t want ppl to see her “vulnerable” so she pretends it was all fake. It almost seemed as though she was in a psychosis whether due to drugs, alcohol and mental illness, I don’t know. Alls I know is that I’ve been there and my entire neurological system never came back. I now live with an autoimmune disorder that affects my spine and live in chronic pain for over 12 years now. I am disabled. My body couldn’t take anymore trauma.
The best and most accurate thing my counselor ever told me when we were talking about issues regarding mental health and why some people act the way they do is "Negative attention is still attention". I wouldn't be surprised if that had some bearing on this whole thing.People will self-sabotage in order to get negative attention because sometimes it's what they believe they deserve. Not a healthcare professional, just had several years of therapy.

I am on year 31 of a hell on earth opiate addiction ad she is very lucky as her story goes. When you go to bed late around 3am sometime in the 90s and wake up and its 30 years later you've waisted your entire lie on opiates you will know at that time nothing but despair for the road you chose and the life you've lost to a drug its the shit pit of a destiny you don't want.
Licensed therapist here, the behavior is called "malingering". I wouldn't go so far as identifying a specific diagnosis without assessing her. But malingering is the "faking" aspect.

I have to wonder if at least some of her apologizing for "faking" is her trying to distance herself from her own illness because it makes people uncomfortable and because there is some feelings of shame with Mental illness. Yeah, I came across Breland just after the worst of her live-streaming days and was trying to revive her RUclips career, only to flush it for good down the toilet. I felt bad for her at the end of the day, even though I fully believe she brought it on herself. She is truly a cautionary tale of how not to manage the good fortune of RUclips success. Edited to add: wow, I admit it’s been a while since I checked up on her, but good on her for landing on her feet on TikTok - go figure. 39:49 that *is* a fascinating question. In my experience with mental illness, there is often a lack of feeling in control of your mental disposition. If I were to ever choose to fake a mental illness, it would likely be because of just that - I CHOSE to do so. It would put me in control of the situation which is something so apparently missing from my reality. Is it a type of mental illness specifically? No. But it may offer a little insight into Breland’s choice.

It deeply angers me when people feign mental illness for profit when there are people, such as myself and many others, who actually _do_ struggle with mental health. It's not a joke. It's not fake. It's not to get attention and money. It can be debilitating, crippling, and extremely dark.
What this girl did, and others like her, is a slap in the face, degrading, and infuriating to those of us with mental health issues. I appreciate you covering things like this.
I’m so tired of people using mental illnesses as a get out of jail free card or as an excuse for behavior that isn’t acceptable of any means. It’s like I can’t even scroll through my phone without someone saying they have all these mental illnesses and all these diagnoses and think they are the experts or said diagnoses it’s negatively affecting society as a hole it’s dragged into everything where it dose t belong
I related so hard to you sharing that you talk negatively to yourself and anything anybody says negatively about you can’t be any worse than the things you’ve said/thought about yourself. I feel that so hard and I hate that I heard this trick from Kendall Jenner (I have no doubt that she didn’t make it up and likely heard it elsewhere) but I loved the idea so I decided to try it- find a picture of you as a kid, a picture where you’re smiling and happy or dancing or doing something you loved, and hang that picture of your little self on your bathroom mirror so that every time you look at it you imagine saying the things you say about yourself now to your little self about her, and how much that would hurt her to hear. I thought that was just so poignant and real. Sending you all the love, thank you as always for highlighting this story and sharing your truth and pain so openly and eloquently ❤
I am 20 years old right now, I literally remember being 11 and 12 years old watching Breland’s videos, I will say she HAS make a very positive turn around for herself and her viewers buuuuut i didn’t end up the most “normal” or young adult😂

Mental illness is so horrible, I hate when people pretend to have it or pretend to devolve into insanity. I’m glad you can turn it off when you turn the camera off, we can’t. Also NPD would make her think it’s okay 👀 there’s a few (anti social PD too)
It's interesting because I feel in the real world people like GlitterForever carry no meaning and I think RUclipsrs like her know this, which is why they just keep coming back. They can only make a living doing obnoxious clickbait stuff for views 🤷♀ The idea of having to get a real world job I'm sure is terrifying for them because they can't do it, so we're stuck with their toxicity
