    Mayra in Riverdale, CA asks:
What can happen if a young athlete has a torn meniscus and needs surgery, but he continues to play sports before having surgery?
The meniscus is the shock-absorber cartilage in the knee. Frequently active people will have pain, catching and locking of the knee that limits their ability to exercise or play sports. Often they choose to undergo surgery to overcome those symptoms.
In this video, I talk about the surgical options for meniscus tear. I also discuss whether an athlete or active person needs surgery right away or if he can wait. We also discuss whether you could avoid surgery altogether.
Have you suffered a torn meniscus? Did you have surgery right away, or did you wait? Please share your experience below!

After resting for 1 month... I played on my torn miniscus, I was not able to garner any explosion when doing so as I'm capable of doing 360 dunks (6'3) I was demoted to not being able to touch the rim. I would hop around on 1 leg and I played like that for the next 3 months... then I took 3 months off... and finally my Miniscus was healed.. While playing on it... I would develop large Miniscal Cysts protruding from the side of my knee..no doubt I extended the healing process by continuing playing, albeit with a major handicap...literally hopping around on 1 leg...that's what you call, the Love for the Game.

I tore my meniscus 4 years ago playing soccer and never had surgery. Here’s my experience with this stupid injury. I can run, walk, do normal activities, and live life with no discomfort what’s so ever.. like a normal knee. But if i play soccer, or any sport, on any pivoting move my knee will buckle (from minimal, to severe buckle, which will hurt depending how bad the buckle was.) knowing this I have several angles and moves I can’t do because my knee isn’t fully stabilized hence: causing the knee to buckle. Normally when it buckles it will hurt a little, to really bad. If it’s a small buckle, I can keep playing knowing I’ll have small inflammation later but not too serious. But if the buckle is bad it will hurt a lot and I will have to stop playing immediately, then I’ll have to rest 4-5 days for the inflammation and pain to go away. To combat this I now always wear 2 knee braces. The 1st is a slim brace and he 2nd is a big brace with metal supports that I wear over the slim one. Keeping the knee tight. This has allowed me to play soccer again. Mind you even with 2 braces I still hurt it minimally here and there but it’s hell of a lot better than without them.

My name is bsreddy from india , while I was playing shuttle badminton my right knee miniscus was torn and the doctor has said to me that my right knee miniscus was 4th grade damage of miniscus. The doctor has diagnosed by verifying the xray and mri report. In this regard my question is are there any possibilities to cure torn miniscus without surgery? Shall I go back to play shuttle badminton ? My cell no.939 888 9702 . Kindly do favour . Kindly...

Hi. I’m 61 and injured my knee walking a 100 lb lab. I’m attending Pilates and my doc said to continue Aleve for 4 mo. It’s been 5. I do pretty well in Pilates, but I can’t do stairs and my knee feels tight/swollen in the afternoon and evening. I can’t bend my leg more than 90 degrees and I’m limber. My doc hasn’t mentioned a specialist but said it’s probably a slight meniscus tear. Do you think Pilates is ok? We modify several exercises. Not sure what to do since I’m not supposed to use Aleve anymore. Icing and a few ointments help a little. I sleep with a pillow under the bad knee. Oh, and the hamstring area pops quite often. Sometimes that hurts. I need to walk tomlose 30 lbs., but should I? It’s so swollen already! Thanks so much.

Now two month passed and he advices to come back to sport and told me I have no fluid in my knee after checking it. I feel a bit of pain in my knee now when I’m extending the knee. Do you think It healed? And if not what would you advice me to do? I’m 16.

Tore my lateral meniscus in 2018. First MRI scan missed it so i continued playing football (soccer) for the next 2 years until it was absolute agony and could not walk the next week after a game. Finally a second MRI in 2020 showed the tear. I had my first surgery in August 2021, unfortunately the sutures didn't hold and I knew this early on. In April of this year I had another arthroscopy and the surgeon decided to try and repair the meniscus again. I'm around 9 weeks post OP now and I'm pretty certain it's not worked again! It feels like a lifetime since I played sports anywhere close to my capabilities. Horrifically frustrating few years.

That’s a bummer to hear! I had my medial removed completely on my right knee. I’ve cracked my bone for jogging on hard surface since I’m bone to bone. I’ve had an acl repair twice on that knee and the meniscus removal. Three surgeries same knee. I’m 37 and still playing soccer. Hopefully you can return to play as well!

@@luisibanez3180 after my third surgery I was keeping up with 17-18 year olds being 35. Now I’m 37, it’s a lot harder to sprint because I’m bone to bone and our fields, where I live, are terrible. No grass more dirt. But if you do your therapy you can go back to a good level. Let’s say your best was a 10, you can go back to an 8 no problem. I mean yes with difficulties but it’s doable.

    • @chuckchuck8643
      @chuckchuck8643 2 года назад +1

@@luisibanez3180 meniscus’s tears suck bro. Some are not that bad and can heal if the tear is near a blood supply. The other types of tears need repairs, cause the meniscus can’t heal since most of it has no healing sections. But I don’t have one and i can play 2 times a week with no problem at all and I’m fat now. I do stay away from turf but because the turf setup here is terrible. Just a carpet over cement. But I’ve played on in no trouble or problem. But if you work out and hit legs regularly, that will help. Also, try staying at 90 degrees for leg workouts, no more ass to grass. My surgery was done by the best in Texas at the time, the spurs doctor. Recommended glucosamine and chondroitin for life.

@@chuckchuck8643 You don't have a medial meniscus and you're still able to play? That sounds like a miracle. I'm having a meniscus tear that causes locking and catching when I play badminton. I'm delaying the surgery and have stopped playing sports as the surgeon recommended a partial meniscectomy. My fear is that with the meniscus trimmed, I'll be running bone on bone and soon it'll lead to Arthritis. Am I worrying too much? Should I just go for the surgery? Hope I'm not troubling you.

@@madhuchandarsundaravel7021 sorry for the late reply. Yeah, I don’t have a medial meniscus and I can play soccer still. I’m 37 and my last surgery was 2015. I’ve had 3 surgeries. Two acl reconstructions and the last one a meniscus removal, medial. And I have been keeping up with 17-30 year olds no problem. I just can’t play on hard surfaces and have to use turf soccer shoes that have support. I do use a knee brace. The one with the hinges. But I just started last year with the brace, used to wear the sleeve, because I got fat because I am bone to bone. And I wanted to prepare myself for soccer season and went jogging on the street. 215lbs was not a good idea. Went to go get checked and I cracked my bone, hairline crack on the femur. Sat out for a month and was good to go. Was extremely painful though, that little crack. You can still play sports, but I’ did have to strengthen my muscles surrounding my knee. I slide tackle as many times as possible, so with proper care and therapy you should be good. I don’t know if your sport involves a lot of cutting, but the therapy is super important to get you back to it.

Everyday life is pain free until I try a bowl then the the pain returns. Should i elect for more PRP or maybe P/T?, I've got different opinions, some say maybe IT Band?

I’m 14 and i have a patella who is too high over the groove, a torn LCL and a torn medial meniscus.
I play with the U15 girls team in my hometown. I’ve had 36 doctor’s, ortho, x-ray and PT appointments this year.
I’ve always been an active person, and i go to the gym 2-3 times a week and i play soccer 2-4 times a week.
At my school, i’m known as “the hospital kid”.
I’ve had the meniscus injury for 4 months, and 2 weeks after the injury i went to see an ortho and he didn’t even find the torn meniscus (my local doctor found it) even though i told him where i had pain and how i had hurt my knee.
My doctor told me i can play soccer, and i can’t make the injury better or worse.

Hi i am currently 15 years old and I first tore my lateral meniscus about 6 years ago playing select soccer. I didn’t get it repaired until December of 2017 and it was a complex lateral meniscus. I went through the whole recovery process and tried returning to soccer the summer of 2018 and it tore again in the same spot very quickly after a i returned. I went back in for a partial meniscectomy (rather than a repair from my first surgery) and i went through that recovery process as well. I am still currently having sharp pains and discomfort. Any ideas or suggestions?

    • @chellybabyme
      @chellybabyme 4 года назад

I had a meniscectomy partial in one knee in 1995. I went to PT afterwards and healed as expected. Then in 2011 the other knee, same thing but that one came from a quick twist and then I fell down which is more like sports. The first one came from getting kicked. Anyway, the second surgery in 2011 took almost a year to feel normal again. I couldn't get off the crutches at 6 weeks. I was on the crutch for about a year. At 3 weeks I still felt like I was the afternoon of post-op. I can definitely tell you the second surgery by a different surgeon was not my favorite. It was where I was. I was in a different state. Anyway I don't think the second surgeon was any good. But maybe, just maybe since I am so physically fit yet the second one felt so miserable, every single one is different. I don't see how this one comment can help you, but if you match it up with other advice that people give you, then it might help. I would rather say something and maybe help you then not say anything at all. You commented a long time ago I hope you're doing better now.

Hi Doctor I am a 58 year old active male. I went to my orthopedic surgeon he told me I had a slight tear in my meniscus of my left knee (interior) section of the knee. He said at this time I didn't need surgery but did give me a cortizone shot. I work out 4-5 times a week at the gym I do a lot of weight training I was told to stay away from deep squats. Also I do a lot of ladder work sometimes 8-10 hrs a day. I also golf a lot so I guess what I am saying is to continue what I am doing and see the doctor every year?

I injured my left knee 2 months ago and when I returned to playing basketball yesterday, I heard and felt a popping sensation on the medial side of my knee after a change of direction. Now it's kind of stiff, painful and I'm feeling a locking sensation again at the same time. It's not really swelling and I can walk normally but I'm just worried because this might require surgery or something else. What should I do? Your response will be a great help for me. THANKS!

      I posted this earlier....
After resting for 1 month... I played on my torn miniscus, I was not
able to garner any explosion when doing so as I'm capable of doing 360
dunks (6'3) I was demoted to not being able to touch the rim. I would
hop around on 1 leg and I played like that for the next 3 months... then
I took 3 months off... and finally my Miniscus was healed.. While
playing on it... I would develop large Miniscal Cysts protruding from
the side of my knee..no doubt I extended the healing process by
continuing playing, albeit with a major handicap...literally hopping
around on 1 leg...that's what you call, the Love for the Game.

tore my meniscus 3x (FML)... Here are my experiences..
1st - Was just shy of a full horizontal tear...took 9 months to heal and
gain FULL explosion in my jump back. (No Surgery) Right knee.
2nd - Was a long vertical tear.... took 7 months to heal and gain FULL
explosion back. Rested month 1...Played on it next 3 months... rested
the next 3 months. *When I played on it for 3 months, It would become
very swollen and ache, I would develop a tender Meniscal Cyst that
protruded from the side of my knee. (No Surgery) Left Knee
3rd - Is a smaller horizontal tear....Currently dealing with it.. Im
projecting a 2 month timetable to heal this one... I wont be using it in
sport so It an heal quicker... Physical Therapy to the max...Eat a
healthy diet and your body will want to heal that tear as quick as
possible. (Not getting Surgery) Left Knee...Slight Cyst.
-Every single TEAR occurred while Coming Down after jumping (exploding)
... All occurred jumping up to grab a rebound during basketball..
-1st and 3rd TEARS were Deja Vue, triggered by to much pressure hitting
the meniscus after coming down and landing side ways spraining my ankle
outward...that second of standing on the sprained ankle.. was enough
      stress that the TEAR occurred.
-2nd tear was just landing on the side/heel after coming down from a
jump... This was first day out after months off... went to hard to fast.
-Another point - IT is said that when the Meniscus develops the Meniscal
Cyst that 100% of the time surgery is needed because the type of tear
associated with the Cyst occurrence... I can tell you that I have NEVER
received SURGERY for any of my meniscal tears... and they have ALL
healed on their own. I also do not attribute previous meniscal tears, to
others that have occurred..I do not believe they are related in
anyway... I believe I fully recovered and it is simply bad luck.

I'm 33 years old and play sports, Badminton to be exact which requires a
lot of jumping and turning. I probably had a tear about 9 months ago
while playing but the pain was worsening over time, ultimately was
causing me to limping while walking. My doctor looked at the MRI and
told me that I have a full meniscus tear, which he said can't be
repaired surgically due to the extensive of the tear. It went to the
root as well. I stopped playing Badminton which stopped the pain but I
would like to go back to playing. So if I go back to playing can the
meniscus tear cause some other injuries since it went to the root? I was
very surprised to hear that it can't be repaired surgically as well, do
you think I should get a second opinion? Thank you in advance.

I had a knee injury back in December 2016(from socccer) but the Dr initially thought it was just an LCL sprain and I went on my way. Fast forward to April 2017, after starting a new job as a Car Detailer/Groomer, and pre season soccer training, my knee pain was gradually coming back and getting worse(I was wearing a knee brace but it no longer helped, only with stabilization) I got an MRI done and whatyaknow, complex tear of my meniscus, debris throughout the knee, and grade II fissures. I am finally having Arthroscopy knee surgery on June 20 to fix the tear. I never would have waited this long(7 months) to have surgery if I had known from the start it was torn. I just assumed it was a very bad sprain like the professionals told me.

I tore my meniscus 3x (FML)... Here are my experiences..
1st - Was just shy of a full horizontal tear...took 9 months to heal and gain FULL explosion in my jump back. (No Surgery) Right knee.
2nd - Was a long vertical tear.... took 7 months to heal and gain FULL explosion back. Rested month 1...Played on it next 3 months... rested the next 3 months. *When I played on it for 3 months, It would become very swollen and ache, I would develop a tender Meniscal Cyst that protruded from the side of my knee. (No Surgery) Left Knee
3rd - Is a smaller horizontal tear....Currently dealing with it.. Im projecting a 2 month timetable to heal this one... I wont be using it in sport so It an heal quicker... Physical Therapy to the max...Eat a healthy diet and your body will want to heal that tear as quick as possible. (Not getting Surgery) Left Knee...Slight Cyst.
-Every single TEAR occurred while Coming Down after jumping (exploding) ... All occurred jumping up to grab a rebound during basketball..
-1st and 3rd TEARS were Deja Vue, triggered by to much pressure hitting the meniscus after coming down and landing side ways spraining my ankle outward...that second of standing on the sprained ankle.. was enough stress that the TEAR occurred.
-2nd tear was just landing on the side/heel after coming down from a jump... This was first day out after months off... went to hard to fast.
-Another point - IT is said that when the Meniscus develops the Meniscal Cyst that 100% of the time surgery is needed because the type of tear associated with the Cyst occurrence... I can tell you that I have NEVER received SURGERY for any of my meniscal tears... and they have ALL healed on their own. I also do not attribute previous meniscal tears, to others that have occurred..I do not believe they are related in anyway... I believe I fully recovered and it is simply bad luck.

Good afternoon Doc I’m with the Us army and we do a lot of extensive training like ruck marches puts a lot of pressure to my knees carrying a rucksack for a whole 6 to 10 miles, we’re also involved in sports like foot ball and soccer plus running that puts a lot more pressure on my knees specially when twisting and turning, I was diagnosed with a meniscus tear but I can still walk fine it’s just that when doing strenuous activities that my symptoms act up, should I get a surgery as early as now before it gets worst?

Sometimes I thumb at the side of my knee as forcefully as possible as if Im fingering a pressure point & it’s hurts so good !! I tore the same meniscus twice before I was 17 . The first tear came from sleeping on the couch while Laying with my knee hyper extending & I couldn’t walk without my knee buckling for a 2 months and then I started playing sports and my knee gave out on me playing football . When I went for an mri they said that all they can do it shave it . It’s been 8 years since my surgery and although my left knee is obviously weaker then my right knee . It’s not that bad but it’s an annoying feel good pain as I squat or twist my knee in any way. I know for a fact il need a knee replacement if I live to be old .im currently 24 & my knee clicks and pops with almost every movement

I can't give you specific medical advice. You might ask your doctor what he thinks you're allowed to do. Often people without symptoms can do sports and exercise as long as they have no pain.

I'm pretty sure I have a lateral meniscus injury. Slight popping when walking, sharp pain on outer edge of kneecap when squatting or putting much force on the knee when it is bent. It is a lot better with rest but still slightly there. My backed ball season starts on November 20th and after two weeks of rest it's better, but would I be all good by the season with continued ice and heat?

I was diagnosed with a developing horizontal cleavage tear that had not extended to an articular surface at the time of an MRI. The ortho I was assigned to see said I did not need surgery. This was about a year ago, and in the meantime, I've been making heavy use of PT to rehab everything supporting the knee. It has gotten better, but it still feels weak at times, and it gets very sore with activities such as running, cycling and using a rowing machine. Should I continue on a non-surgical path, or should I ask for surgery at this point?

    • @DrDavidGeier
      @DrDavidGeier  7 лет назад

Generally if signal in the meniscus doesn't extend to the surface on an MRI, surgery is generally not needed.
