I like that Magikarp’s Leap Out is reminiscent of the strategy from the R/B/Y games where you would lead with Magikarp, but immediately switch out in order to farm Exp.
You forgot to include the 1998 Promo Kangaskhan. That came out before any of the cards you discussed came out in the USA and definitely was around during the first generation of play.
If we are talking about generation 1 Pokemon cards, you forgot Magnemite. More specifically, the Promo Magnemite, which reuses artwork from Team Rocket. The expansion came immediately after Fossil, and before the Gym leaders expansions.

Back then types worked very differently like how ghost, poison, and psychic are all under psychic while now poison is grouped with dark in darkness and psychic and ghost is grouped with fairy under psychic with the weakness eluding to it non tcg type as the kadabara shown is psychic that is also weak to psychic due to ghost sharing the type but in tcgp is weak to darkness so that its not weak to its own type and fairy mon are weak to metal
I wonder if the pocket mobile game jumped too quickly into high HP and high damage cards, all while oversimplifying base/not fully evolved cards. I think they had the mentality of wanting people to spend money to get those rare cards and sweep matches with. I wish there were more ways to survive and pull off wins through strategy, even if your draws weren't giving you the last line in your evolution.
Oh I agree. They shoulda introduced Ex cards much later- having them right away made competitive play super depressing since they’re the only cards that matter.
I think it’s actually quite balanced. While decks that don’t feature EXs aren’t the Meta you can have a lot of success with a few decks that don’t have any even against the strongest decks. Due to the quick nature of games you’re never guaranteed a victory even with the strongest decks. After the release of the last pack there are quite a few non EX options so I anticipate it will continue to be a thing the more cards are added to the pool.
It had to because of ex pokemon. While there is a meta the game is pretty balanced right now. Mewtwo was probably a bit too strong at launch but with the introduction of mew the big one shot enemies are now balanced with a mew threat.

Not by itself, but Raichu can easily KO Mewtwo with chip. Both Electabuzz (through the bench hitting effect) and Dedenne (through paralysis, albeit coin-based) can help to bring Mewtwo into lethal range of Pikachu. Going off of the data we have, Pikachu with Zebstrika and Zapdos, no Raichu, seems to be unfavored (which adds to the rock-paper-scissors meta we have now with the top 3 decks, where Pikachu beating Gyarados, Gyarados beating Mewtwo, and Mewtwo beating Pikachu), while Pikachu with Zebstrika and Raichu is still unfavored, but is a lot closer to an even matchup.
I would have loved for then to not put any EX on the first sets so people could use their favorite pokemon. Decks are just revolving around EX, except for Blaine and Dark decks since they have no EX
Golem Druddigon would likely be at the top of the meta in a metagame with no ex. I could see some interesting stuff come in a no-ex Pocket, though, like an Electric deck with the Lt Surge package that runs new Raichu or a Misty deck that uses an alternate topend like normal Blastoise or something.
If there will be a format of 1 - 3 diamonds rarity cards only deck in pocket there will be a more variation in gameplay as the game itself was mostly dominated by EX cards making some other cards useless.
It definitely feels bad to manage to knock out a celibi EX and get 2 prizes, only to get another celebi EX behind it immediately afterward that gets erika'd twice. It is almost impossible to win without them I would support a no EX format
there are EX cards of almost every pokemon. Plus there are still GX, Lv.X, Tag-Team, VSTAR, and Terra in the tcg that will eventually be released into Pokemon Pocket. All those pokemon card types are worth 2 or even 3 knockout points. Meta is never going to ever be dominated by a budget deck.

I had absolutely zero recollection at just how abysmally low the values were for original TCG. I guess i didn't even look at the cards i have when i discovered my old collection a few years ago!
I'm not sure of the official classifications, but Abra, Sandshrew, and Gastly are part of the 3 vending machine series. They only include first generation Pokemon so I think they would technically be first generation cards. Also, the promo Magnimite is from the Rocket set. The parent/child Kangaskhan might also count.
I don't think it's true that all low rarity cards reuse existing artwork, is it? I collect artwork from the artist Banana Jerky and their only piece of art in TCG Pocket is the Cramorant from Mythical Island, which as far as I can tell is new. Maybe it's from a niche Japanese language release I couldn't find or something, but Banana Jerky's website seems to say that it's a new piece of art specifically for TCG Pocket. Which makes me assume a lot of the other art I don't recognize on the low rarity cards might be new too.
Correction, Banana Jerky also illustrated the gold star Ditto apparently, it just didn't show up when I searched because I guess I don't own one. That doesn't change my main point, I just said Cramorant was their only piece and I guess that's not true.
Seeing these old arts ripped and put on a digital card that had other changes made just feels so wrong. 130 HP on Slowbro?! A bland Hitmonchan art without the cool foil effect even being considered? They really felt that Super Psy and Psyshock needed changing? And come on, they don't even have the iconic yellow borders.
Off topic a bit id really like a longer form of play wether it's 40-60 card decks and 6 point games or i have an idea for double battles which i think would only work in the card style of pocket. Things are fast enough to run a doubles using 4 card points to win and would allow new type and card combos for decks
@@An_Entire_Lime Only GA Raichu can, MI Raichu does 60 damage + 20 to all benched (Hitmonchan has 80HP). And also, both require three energies, so unless you run Surge and Magneton to charge faster Hitmonchan can two-shot GA Raichu (100HP) and three-shot MI Raichu, surviving one hit.
It will get boring if they don't offer a different battle opinions in the future, I know the devs say its more about collecting cards but main reason people want the cards is for easier battle wins, I think the cards will adapt as the games develop
Pocket has a pretty tight balance, but right now basic pokemon with like 70-80 hp and 1 energy 30 damage attacks are suppose to be super fast and take advantage of weakness but are not very useable.
@ in theory it's a good card if you know what deck/cards your opponent is playing. In random matchups cards like it just don't compare to farfetch/kang/drud which are generally better against many decks.
@ which is why drud is so popular as a wall. You play hitmonchan and that's 4 turns to kill drud which means chan will kill itself and drud and that's if they dont heal. That's just not viable in this meta. Again, if you KNOW your opponent is playing normal/lightning pokemon then yea hitmonchan is great.

Until I picked up TCGP pretty much the last time I played was Base set/Fossil/Jungle as a kid lol. So anyone who is some gen Z kid that wasn't even alive in '99 watching this now, the cards you are seeing is the game as I knew it pretty much lol. Imagine seeing modern cards when those are the ones I am used to, cards like Hitmonchan and Scyther being the powerhouses. (I keep saying "pretty much" because technically I played the online pokemon TCG a few years back for a VERY short time, like not enough to have much but the very starter cards they give you. So it isn't a PERFECT transition from base to TCGP, but still was rather shocking.)
Also technically I played slightly into Team Rocket before quitting and moving to Magic, and was at least somewhat familiar with the first gym leaders set, so also a very tiny bit more experience.

Not a huge fan of how they watered down the complexity of some cards. Considering the best decks in Pocket utilitize Pokémon Powers that completely take over games. The only vanilla strategies being ones that use a gym leader Supporter.

That'll definitely change as time goes on. With so few sets available, the meta is very bottle necked

I'll be honest - I enjoy pocket, but it does bother me HARD that having 2 attacks is considered a luxury in this game. Like why.
Volcarona can hit any Pokémon and deal 80 damage after discarding 2 energy, so it can also obliterate a benched Pokémon like Magikarp.

Feels like they've ruined what makes pokemon cards so appealing by simplifying them so much. Much of the fun is reading the cards.

It's watered down for now. They still have yet to introduce burn and confusion (although mythical weezing's attack works like confusion).
It's the first set for an inherently simpler version of the game.
