Hey John. On Sunday, I went to the flea market and bought a nintendo wii for $5. It came with power and video cables but no controller or sensor bar. At home, I plugged it in, it powers on and reads the game discs. On amazon I ordered a offbrand wiimote/nunchuck combo and sensor bar for $30 with tax and free shipping. So basically I got a wii for $35. 👍
I remember a little bit of the NES and some of the SNES but the N64 is the first console I fully remember and thus will always hold the closest in my heart
I want to get one of those Nintendo Switch online N64 controllers to use on the steamdeck for N64 emulation, the ps5 controller covers all the snes & playstation emulation great because of the controller layout but think those Nintendo switch online controllers will be worth getting for steamdeck emulation as a system replacer
The Brawler 64 is a god send I cant play platformers on the N64 with out it theyre amazing controllers that have helped me realize the original N64 controller is actually worse than we thought lol
You should look into the hyperkin controller. Maybe it was called admiral? Its like an original n64 pad but it has a more modern stick. I have a modern style controller for the n64 and i just cant get over the new form factor... it makes playing feel wrong. So the hyperkin controller was a god send for me. I got tired of the reproduction controllers flimsy sticks literally peeling off as its just a pin and plastic placed on top... whenever i buy original pads the sticks are never proper. If you find yourself wanting the original form factor, definitely recommend its on amazon but it sells out quite regularly. Had it for about 3 yrs now and its great.
My current set up for the N64 is the Everdrive X7 in red, wireless Brawler 64 also in red.....and I have it hooked up to a CRT! I got the Everdrive and controller from Stone Age Gamer also. Good video!!
I find it's better to just use a adapter to use the original controller on a PC and just emulate on there. Project 64 has everything you need to make the game play like on original hardware and also supports Reshade for the CRT effect. The adapter for the N64 controller is only because my Razer xbox controller's modern thumbsticks are way too sensitive for FPS games like Hexen and Duke 64.
Hey John, I've got a recommendation for your setup, If you want to play games on your big screen, but want the audio to go to some earbuds or headphones, I recommend getting a Bluetooth audio receiver. Mine has nfc so I can tap my earbuds to the outside of the case and it pairs together with the receiver. There is almost no latency when using the earbuds and it works very good. The delay is not noticable with any of my earbuds/headphones It even comes with a remote for controlling audio. It's a set and forget solution that I've used for a while , it's inputs are toslink composite red and white cables and a stereo 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Brawler 64 for PC is definitely my favourite modern N64 product. Even though playing on an actual N64 is ideal, but I personally prefer to emulate most consoles to avoid managing many consoles, and the ability to upscale games, use savestates, cheats, and more are also great factors. The only N64 games that I've played in the past 2 decades are Super Mario 64 and one of the Rampage games.
I am 43 years old and can honestly say I have never played a 64. However I did buy one over the weekend at ATG in Waco. A very clean and minty boxed specimen. I look forward to adding some of the products you mentioned, however will be hooking it up to a CRT.

I bought a Nintendo 64 last year and it came with a not-so-great controller. I replaced that with the wired version of the Brawler64 and it was great! I like the layout of the controller compared to the standard one, too. It’s comfortable to hold.

One thing I have for the N64 is the GADO Intec Gaming Receiver, and it lets me use an NSO N64 controller with rumble and memory pak support. I didn't know about the receiver here, though being able to use a proper new N64 controller is amazing with a tight stick.
Great setup! I have the Tim's RGB mod, Retrotink 5X and the brawler64 wireless. I want to try the Tribute64 wireless too, since it has the vibration integrated.
I like the Super64 and I like the wireless controller from Retro-bit because of it's Hori/GCN thumb stick and that it has built in rumble but the drawbacks to using these modern devices is that they get their power by pulling power from the N64 console itself which can make both your N64 and the cartridge you have inserted get overheated which is why I went switch to using S-Video cable with the retrotink 2X Pro and a wired OG or wired Retrofighters controller because my N64 being cool to the touch after a hour of game play is more important to me.
If your talking about controllers that’s not an upgrade the only thing that can get upgrades are PC like going and buying a more powerful graphics card after every 7 years a new processor new motherboard for consoles there is no upgrade they remain the same forever
I love mini consoles that don't take much room and have a bunch of games on them. I would love it if I could swap out my wii disc drive for a ssd drive and have all my games downloaded to that incase the discs and the drive quit working

I bet it was fun to be there in the moment as companies like Nintendo, SEGA and Sony paved the way and created amazing new experiences never thought possible to little gamers back then, like you guys. But game companies aren’t the ones doing that now, are they? Now, every game is the EXACT SAME, with stuff like “open-world” and “4k-graphics” being the only things the market cares about. Yeah, indie games sometimes make an old-school experience like this, but I wish it was the norm again. I was born in the wrong generation.
Finally! I can’t seem to find anyone on RUclips bout N64 games but I’m so wanting this set up with the ever drive BUT CAN you add snes on it but many thanks I needa look through your channel to get a modem N64 so any help will be awesome
Another thing to mention is a Blue Retro adapter to use the Nintendo Switch Online N64 controllers with original hardware. Has built in rumble pack and memory card functionality.
The Thumb Stick on the N64 controller is better for Mario 64 compared to the Wii and Switch versions because you could creep walk or crawl with Mario very slowly
In my area, finding a CRT is becoming harder to find. Thrift stores have stopped offering them, and many family members have upgraded and moved on from them. For those who have the setup, for sure a great way to play.
Sweet I also have a setup with UltraHDMI, Brawler64 Wireless and Everdrive. I didn't know about the ForeverPak though so I'll have to pick one of those up. Great video!
I live in Australia. I have an NTSC American N64 with a PAL/Australian power supply (they're removable). In my opinion the best, non invasive way to play N64 in 2023 is to use a Retrotink 5x + Svideo cable from Retro Gaming Cables (recommended from RetroRGB) + an Everdrive 64 X7. That's my current set up and it's highly recommended.
Thanks for the awesome video! I actually have used the EON Super 64 for about 3 years now and have also bought a couple as gifts to friends who were just getting into N64 and they love the ease of use compared to other HDMI hook up options as they were not ready to get into researching or paying for mods. It's literally like combining an S-video cable, retrotink 2x, and it's own power suppy all in one small little shell that sits nicely into the back of the N64.
I ended up grabbing a generic N64 controller from Amazon the one that looks similar to the horipad but larger and the Dpad more towards the left and it's probably the best decision i decided to make.
finding replacement controllers has become a huge hassle for me. Part of the reason I stick with the original hardware (in gaming in general) is because of the controllers. I got burned with a few online controllers QA but found some descent replacement parts. I love the idea of a wireless controller for the n64 but would definitely need that weird upside down Arwing shape.
I got a used N64 with one controller and expansion pack for $29 in 2002 from a clearance bin in the mall. Just thrown in there with about 40 other systems. I should have bought all of them.
I don't use the original Rumble Pak but a Gamester device that serves as a Rumble Pak (no batteries required) AND as 4 controller paks all in one. Apart from this, I go old school: CRT and original cartridges and controllers, although I sometimes use a Retrobit tribute controller, especially for some racing games and for 1080 Snowboarding (which I don't like to play with a regular controller)
Transfer Paks are pretty cool if you happen to have Gen 1 or 2 Pokemon games. You can store your Pokemon between playthroughs, trade without multiple GBs and even play the games on your TV with the only official 2-4x speedup. Everdive adds a few more benefits, since you can backup your saves to dupe Pokemon etc. There's also a piece of homebrew to backup and restore your GB saves as well, and even dump roms. I haven't tested it much, but it should work with most games, not just Pokemon.
I play on a LG C1 OLED using a Brawler 64 wired with an Svideo>Retrotink 2x>mClassic setup and can't complain. The Ultra HDMI would be nice but I can't justify spending that much money on something that will only be used for 1 console.
I love the brawler64 but the Retro-Bit tribute has rumble. I still want to get a wired brawler for games that use both a memory card and rumble pak. Just get like 2 extension cables and your good.
Same when possible on original hardware, and more so when it comes to N64 as emulation to this day is still iffy. Having said that I do have a bunch of emulators on my Android tablet, and it's great fun when I have some downtime traveling, or at work to get a quick retro game in from the NES, SNES, Genesis, etc..
I've recently bought the Retrotink 2x, I'm looking to use the S-Video cable, would've loved to get UltraHDMI however it's hard to install plus didn't want to pay for installation. I like the modern accessories like the wireless controller.
I found your channel today and I'm glad I did. I didn't know about about the Forever Pak and I managed to find one moments ago, here in the UK. I purchased the Everdrive X7 a few days ago, as I'm a retro streamer on Twitch and this, along with the pak will be a big help when it comes to playing my childhood favourites 😄
Why is it illegal to talk about or share where you get roms or youtubers refuse to do it… yet openly talk about using cartridges or programs or accessories that let you play roms and even admit that you use/play/download roms. Always thought this is a weird arbitrary boundary line. If it’s illegal to talk about WHERE you get roms, surely it’s just as illegal to admit and demo that you have and use and download roms. Though, I also doubt anyone cares if you use roms, so what difference does it make if you say what site you used to get them?
I’ve heard of the EverDrive, but didn’t realize what it was. Being able to play home brew is always fun. That was one of my favorite things on the Dreamcast, just checking out the home brews. The forever pak is also cool. I wish I still had my n64. I tend to emulate. But emulation of n64 is kind of a pain.
It's essentially an SD card loaded with N64 roms. It's set in a cartridge casing so you can interface it with your console. It's a great product. Only about $100
Great video to check what is possible these days. My N64-Setup: RGB moded EU Console (Its still my childhood console 28 old^^), Brawler Controller, 40 original games but also a everdrive, Retrotink2x + mclassic (I like these Upscalercombo, also use it on my snes). Maybe a Forever pak will added soon. In my opinion: Gameplaywise i never give up on the retrotink2x and brawlercontroller, the other stuff is like nice to have. greetings from germany ! :)
My current set up for the N64 is: Original console, Blue Retro (Bluetooth adaptor), I´m waiting for my 8bitDo mod kit for N64 controller, Bitfunx HDMI Cable _(is it good? I actually liked it. Didn´t noticed any lagg and the image quality was indeed improved)_ . I intend to get a Bluetooth Audio Receiver for earphones...and by the way, I did use my N64 on a CRT Sony Trinitron Wega 310 TV but with the HDMI cable looks better on my big screen (not smart TV but modern TV). Original Cartridges. No EverDrive 64. I´m against emulation and moding the original console and I could never play japanese cartridges since I do not understand Japanese. I´m a weird misture between Retro Old school gamer and Retro modern gamer. I just don´t like any other control that hasn´t the shape of the original N64 controller and I don´t know why people hate it so much if it´s not great science to know how to use it. All new and old X-Box, and Play Station controllers have almost the same frame and distribution of buttons EXCEPT for the N64 controller. It´s just unique. You have a beautiful "Z" button that works perfectly as a trigger for 007, is also great for doing a Barrel roll with A-wing on Star Fox or locking enemies on Zelda OOT and "C" buttons are just great for Zelda too; that is why I choosed the 8bitDo mod kit for the controller. It is even more purist that the Original Nintendo Switch Controller wich tries to mimic the 90´s controller. I bet it is cool too though but expensive and a bit hard to get. Either way I´m getting the 8bitDo mod kit first.
I have the OEM comp cables (My HDTV handles these very well), Wireless Brawlers (My one brawler can use the transfer pak, Haven't received my other brawlers yet), a mix of memory cards (I think I'll get the forever pak at some point), Tremor paks (Never did get an rumble pak, want one though), Original games MKT, MK64, SM64, PKMNS, WR64, GE007, TWINE007, SC64 (only way to play it is with og hardware), SWRS, SWE1R, SWSOTE, DK64, WG3DHKY, WG3DHKY98, NHL99, and more with one repo cart.
I have 2 Setups In my living room its my Childhood N64, connected to a 5 way Composite switch, (Along side my Childhood NES, Childhood Gamecube, SNES which is the only console I owned as a child that I don't have that console of as my brother has that one, and my Original Wii) which then runs out to my Retro Tink 2x Pro, which runs into an 8 way HDMI Switch which runs into my Flat screen TV. In my Office I have my Second N64, My Toploading NES, My Second SNES, My Adaulthood moved away from home Gamecube (DOL-101), and my Second Wii) All connected to a 20' CRT because I need a space where I can play Zapper games, and can play Gyromite, Stack-Up, and Super Glove Ball Properly with R.O.B. and the Power Glove Respectively. All my Cartridge based games and Disc games up to Wii live down here and get transported upstairs when I want to play them up there anything Post wii (Wiiu, Switch, and my Wifes Sony/Microsoft games) Live upstairs and don't come down here.
I'm surprised no one has made a third party expansion pack for the N64. They're cheap and common for the Sega Saturn, but not the N64. Considering some well known games REQUIRE the expansion pack, you'd think SOMEONE would have made one by now.
My N64 Everdrive was a wonderful investment. I knew it could do NES games, but I wasn't aware Gameboy Color worked. I'll have to load that up. I am using my SNES Everdrive for Super Gameboy functionality, but it can't do Gameboy Color.
My setup is as follows. Original N64 jewel swapped Region free adapted Eon Super 64 M-Classic HDMI adaptor Brawler 64 controllers (corded) Super 64 cartridge Runs like a top and I love having it around
I use an N64 with an Kaico N64 Double Line Adapter on a PAL N64. Personally i like the Original N64 Controller the Most and only us an extension Cable. The Problem is as fan the UltraHDMI is nearly never Available and too Expensice. The Super 64 Pal version wa only for 1 week available i dont know why they dont sell it anymore (i think technichal problems) bot now its only Available for NTSC Consoles. But i like my Setup :D
I'm seeing N64 HDMI solutions online for around $20. Can anyone recommend one? My 4K TV does have composite hookups but I would like to improve the quality a little.
I have everdrive x7, I have retrotink 2x mini, I have rad2x cable, among other cables and devices. I have spent much money and years of my life trying to play decently in a modern TV, but in the end, all for nothing. My advice: buy a 20 bucks device to connect original N64 controller to PC and play emulator. Its free and they come in HD.
I have a great CRT and i'm looking to emulate to it via an HDMI to composite 10.99 dongle i bought ... I still don't have the dedicated hardware to do it. Pc being used with other HD monitors makes it clonky to emulate to the CRT. I'm thinking i'll just buy a switch and play from the store. For the titles not available that i have the roms to ... I need a mini pc of somesort. Most "Laying around" pcs i have tested don't do 64 titles (intel intergrated 650 or so).
I love the fact that you can get an Everdrive and a wireless controller and give a new life on these old consoles cause unless you are a collector its just not possible to get catridges with current prices.

What I like about the Forever Pak 64 is that you can swap the board with Nintendo's official memory pak if you still want to use the original shell. 👍
Can't you just also buy a forever pack board by itself and replace the original?
@@SeaSlug No. They only sell it in the Forever Pak shell. Kinda odd, because on their site they sell boards for other stuff. 😅

In my area, finding a CRT is becoming harder to find. Thrift stores have stopped offering them, and many family members have upgraded and moved on from them. For those who have the setup, for sure a great way to play.
@@johnhancockretro yes luckily it’s just the same one I’ve always had I dread the day this thing conks out.
NINERS ARE GOING DOWN...GO BIRDS
P.S. see ya next year Cowgirls/ New Jersey Giants
I'm fortunate enough to still have my Sony Trinitron Wega so I just softmod my consoles and play on the ole CRT.
I have a N64 and a few games but I mostly play an emulator on my phone with a bluetooth controller. :)
Thank you, very interesting. I'm your newest subscriber :)
ohh very nice everdrive really like the design etc. you got good !
Sweet I also have a setup with UltraHDMI, Brawler64 Wireless and Everdrive. I didn't know about the ForeverPak though so I'll have to pick one of those up. Great video!
You are most welcome.
Would love a similar video for Dreamcast, GameCube & PS2.
Ultra HDMI 1.08, Retro Brawler Wireless, I'm set.
S Video is not best as RGB
@@gollumnova4893 Everyone knows that.
The Brawler 64 isn't as good as people say it is. The stick really bothers me so much and makes some games way harder.
Which version so you have?
Thanks for the awesome video! I actually have used the EON Super 64 for about 3 years now and have also bought a couple as gifts to friends who were just getting into N64 and they love the ease of use compared to other HDMI hook up options as they were not ready to get into researching or paying for mods. It's literally like combining an S-video cable, retrotink 2x, and it's own power suppy all in one small little shell that sits nicely into the back of the N64.
LCD Projector, 007 4 player is my fav
I bought a brace for my controller dongle so the hang doesn’t rip the port off the pins. They have them on eBay for the brawler and tribute 64
Retrotink and S-video cable
The mod I want the most is the Sony flat screen CRT I played N64 on as a teen. Having a hard time finding any CRTs that aren't tiny.
School Is In Session Professor John Hancock At Your Service
I ended up grabbing a generic N64 controller from Amazon the one that looks similar to the horipad but larger and the Dpad more towards the left and it's probably the best decision i decided to make.
Still using old tube TV with old consoles can't afford upgrades but would love to have Ultra HDMI
Good old CRT and composite is great on Nintendo 64, I can't hardly tell a difference besides better text with S video
I use both -RGB on a SONY PVM as well as a modded PixelFX HDMI on my modern T.V
Im a simple man, I see a N64 video and I like and subsribe.
finding replacement controllers has become a huge hassle for me.
I emulate (because of money and space) and have recently got my kids excited about old games. They love Mario, NFL Blitz and Kirby on the 64!
I'm 31 and just spent $1,000 on a sweet N64 Haul.
Fuck The Next Gen!!!
Going to grab Golden Eye and that Mario 64 next.
I do old school controller and connections.
Gauntlet legends was the best game
I’m more of a CRT purist but I’m just glad when anyone plays older games anyway they can!
@@CommodoreFan64 right on 🤙
@@CommodoreFan64yeah its iffy on android oh okay
The Analogue 3D sounds like it'll be the new definitive way to play N64 with original cartridges, up to 4K resolution.
Perfect Dark also require Expasion pack to "unlock" the full game.
Wow that ultra looks good 😊
For me an RGB modded console on CRT with an Hori pad is the best setup that I played.
There are working systems with games and a controller for ~$110 on eBay right now. If you miss it, jump in.
It's essentially an SD card loaded with N64 roms. It's set in a cartridge casing so you can interface it with your console. It's a great product. Only about $100
The original ED64 was decent, but it lacked the ability to save games
Can't beat n64 factory remote. Everdrive sounds interesting. Not like Nintendo makes these games any more
007 Goldeneye for Switch Online - this Friday! Can't wait!!
That Brawler 64 controller looks cool and would like to get one for my N64, but I Hate the dongle that sticks out
Im really interested in all the scaling equipment, but then I remember I like playing on CRTs, so i never end up buying anything'
i had a jungle green n64 i used a e.o.n super 64 hdmi. i used old wired controllers on mine, i sold it last year i felt like it was time.
That song you went with was cool 3 years ago. Wish it would stop turning up in gaming videos
Either way I´m getting the 8bitDo mod kit first.
brawler 64 felt so cheap and light, i think there is nothing better than the original, tuned with the Gamecube Control Stick
The system and Games are way over priced now so thanks but I will pass
Liked and subbed
Original N64 jewel swapped
Region free adapted
Eon Super 64
M-Classic HDMI adaptor
Brawler 64 controllers (corded)
Super 64 cartridge
Runs like a top and I love having it around
I use an N64 with an Kaico N64 Double Line Adapter on a PAL N64. Personally i like the Original N64 Controller the Most and only us an extension Cable.
The Problem is as fan the UltraHDMI is nearly never Available and too Expensice. The Super 64 Pal version wa only for 1 week available i dont know why
they dont sell it anymore (i think technichal problems) bot now its only Available for NTSC Consoles.
But i like my Setup :D
I always loved the N64 cause of its weird controller and curved console shape I still have one to this day
I like the 64 hdmi mod but i prefer to find a rgb cable and connect to a crt tv is cheaper and is better in my point of view
Region Free* Bracket
*Regions not included: The continents of Europe, Oceania, Africa, most of of Asia, and most of South America.
I use a Vizio flat tv that has RCA input. I do have an adapter from Amazon.
Hi, I have 5 Nitendo games (On CD) that I have many maps for on a Computer. Which is the Best N64 Emulator out there for an M1 Mac. Thanks!
