Hey John. On Sunday, I went to the flea market and bought a nintendo wii for $5. It came with power and video cables but no controller or sensor bar. At home, I plugged it in, it powers on and reads the game discs. On amazon I ordered a offbrand wiimote/nunchuck combo and sensor bar for $30 with tax and free shipping. So basically I got a wii for $35. 👍

Hey John, I've got a recommendation for your setup, If you want to play games on your big screen, but want the audio to go to some earbuds or headphones, I recommend getting a Bluetooth audio receiver. Mine has nfc so I can tap my earbuds to the outside of the case and it pairs together with the receiver. There is almost no latency when using the earbuds and it works very good. The delay is not noticable with any of my earbuds/headphones It even comes with a remote for controlling audio. It's a set and forget solution that I've used for a while , it's inputs are toslink composite red and white cables and a stereo 3.5mm headphone jack.
Another thing to mention is a Blue Retro adapter to use the Nintendo Switch Online N64 controllers with original hardware. Has built in rumble pack and memory card functionality.
Tried to show Mario 64 to my Girlfriend, she enjoyed Mario Odyssey since last year. But the N64 controls were quite offputting for her and she had troubles getting started so I realized that this older gen of consoles did have its flaw : the N64 controller.(I love the N64 controller and the Mario 64 controls, but they are of another era, it's evident now that I see it as it is.)

If you find yourself wanting the original form factor, definitely recommend its on amazon but it sells out quite regularly. Had it for about 3 yrs now and its great.
I bought a Nintendo 64 last year and it came with a not-so-great controller. I replaced that with the wired version of the Brawler64 and it was great! I like the layout of the controller compared to the standard one, too. It’s comfortable to hold.
I did the same thing. Mine didnt come with a controller (or any cables) as i purchased it as parts/non-working and fixed it. I got the wireless brawler for it. I can now say i own all Nintendo consoles. I also just picked up Everdrives for NES/SNES and GBA (havent got the 64/GBC yet). Good stuff.
Thanks for the awesome video! I actually have used the EON Super 64 for about 3 years now and have also bought a couple as gifts to friends who were just getting into N64 and they love the ease of use compared to other HDMI hook up options as they were not ready to get into researching or paying for mods. It's literally like combining an S-video cable, retrotink 2x, and it's own power suppy all in one small little shell that sits nicely into the back of the N64.
The Brawler 64 for PC is definitely my favourite modern N64 product. Even though playing on an actual N64 is ideal, but I personally prefer to emulate most consoles to avoid managing many consoles, and the ability to upscale games, use savestates, cheats, and more are also great factors. The only N64 games that I've played in the past 2 decades are Super Mario 64 and one of the Rampage games.
In 3 years, this console will be 30 years old. I’m 14, so I never had the experience of owning an N64, but gosh-darn-it, I wish I did. I bet it was fun to be there in the moment as companies like Nintendo, SEGA and Sony paved the way and created amazing new experiences never thought possible to little gamers back then, like you guys. But game companies aren’t the ones doing that now, are they? Now, every game is the EXACT SAME, with stuff like “open-world” and “4k-graphics” being the only things the market cares about. Yeah, indie games sometimes make an old-school experience like this, but I wish it was the norm again. I was born in the wrong generation.
I want to get one of those Nintendo Switch online N64 controllers to use on the steamdeck for N64 emulation, the ps5 controller covers all the snes & playstation emulation great because of the controller layout but think those Nintendo switch online controllers will be worth getting for steamdeck emulation as a system replacer
another note about the expansion pak, even if a game doesnt require it there are many that will detect the expansion and it will display with slightly improved graphics and performance. So even if you arent playing games that need it, its a great addition to the console for those reasons.
I live in Australia. I have an NTSC American N64 with a PAL/Australian power supply (they're removable). In my opinion the best, non invasive way to play N64 in 2023 is to use a Retrotink 5x + Svideo cable from Retro Gaming Cables (recommended from RetroRGB) + an Everdrive 64 X7. That's my current set up and it's highly recommended.
I like the Super64 and I like the wireless controller from Retro-bit because of it's Hori/GCN thumb stick and that it has built in rumble but the drawbacks to using these modern devices is that they get their power by pulling power from the N64 console itself which can make both your N64 and the cartridge you have inserted get overheated which is why I went switch to using S-Video cable with the retrotink 2X Pro and a wired OG or wired Retrofighters controller because my N64 being cool to the touch after a hour of game play is more important to me.
Transfer Paks are pretty cool if you happen to have Gen 1 or 2 Pokemon games. You can store your Pokemon between playthroughs, trade without multiple GBs and even play the games on your TV with the only official 2-4x speedup. Everdive adds a few more benefits, since you can backup your saves to dupe Pokemon etc. There's also a piece of homebrew to backup and restore your GB saves as well, and even dump roms. I haven't tested it much, but it should work with most games, not just Pokemon.
One thing I have for the N64 is the GADO Intec Gaming Receiver, and it lets me use an NSO N64 controller with rumble and memory pak support. I didn't know about the receiver here, though being able to use a proper new N64 controller is amazing with a tight stick.
I was a kickstarter backer of the original wired Brawler 64, and was sent a fix kit for the shoulder buttons, and had a good experience with them quickly resolving the issues, so from that I backed the 2nd round to get a see through red controller, and they are a god send for playing N64 with some generic extension cables. for my memory/rumble pack I use a Nyko pak that double as both, and so far after it's never let me down in saving my games, I just make sure to use good AAA batteries with it, and not Duraleaks. Also I went on Aliexpress, and got a generic multicart with a loaded micro SD card that works great as I could not find an Everdrive for sale, and also it looks great on my 27in Panasonic CRT with the official S-video cable I've had for years that runs through a 3 device component switch box with the stereo audio from the CRT going out to my 5.1 Dolby digital surround sound setup in my game room. I'm going to have to pick up some more wired Brawler 64 controllers, and extension cables for a 4 player Mario Kart 64 night with the family as that's still such a great game.
If your talking about controllers that’s not an upgrade the only thing that can get upgrades are PC like going and buying a more powerful graphics card after every 7 years a new processor new motherboard for consoles there is no upgrade they remain the same forever
I have my original console bought in 1996. I recently bought an original first party controller at a resale shop, the joystick is in far better shape than my old ones. Most of my memory cards failed, though I do have the expansion pak which I also purchased at the time separately from the games. I have the transfer oak but never use it. Stadium was kind of a dud. I have the rumble pak as well as two third party versions. I'd love to get myself an everdrive, a no-battery memory card, and a rumble pak wired to use system power rather than batteries. The carts hold up better than the controllers and that is saying a lot. moreso, the games themselves hold up. Nintendo 64 was one of the best investments I have ever made and to this day it continues to pay off.
I got a used N64 with one controller and expansion pack for $29 in 2002 from a clearance bin in the mall. Just thrown in there with about 40 other systems. I should have bought all of them.
The Thumb Stick on the N64 controller is better for Mario 64 compared to the Wii and Switch versions because you could creep walk or crawl with Mario very slowly
I found your channel today and I'm glad I did. I didn't know about about the Forever Pak and I managed to find one moments ago, here in the UK. I purchased the Everdrive X7 a few days ago, as I'm a retro streamer on Twitch and this, along with the pak will be a big help when it comes to playing my childhood favourites 😄
I love mini consoles that don't take much room and have a bunch of games on them. I would love it if I could swap out my wii disc drive for a ssd drive and have all my games downloaded to that incase the discs and the drive quit working
Same when possible on original hardware, and more so when it comes to N64 as emulation to this day is still iffy. Having said that I do have a bunch of emulators on my Android tablet, and it's great fun when I have some downtime traveling, or at work to get a quick retro game in from the NES, SNES, Genesis, etc..
I ended up grabbing a generic N64 controller from Amazon the one that looks similar to the horipad but larger and the Dpad more towards the left and it's probably the best decision i decided to make.
My personal experience with the Retro Brawler controllers is that there are a lot of problems with them, especially when trying to use more than one at the same time. We couldn't seem to get the wireless connection to be reliable, especially with 3 or more players using three different ones at once. However, the analogue stick on them also just seems to be a bit sketchy and significantly less consistent than a standard controller. I have personally tested the hyperkin hdmi adapter, but I also have an RGB modded N64 with a RAD2X Retrotink adapter, and while there definitely is a difference between the two, the difference is not really obvious, and I'm very happy with how well the Hyperkin cable works, given how cheap it is. There are some adapters which can be found for cheaper which may be as good as the Hyperkin, but some are definitely significantly worse.
I was a playstation guy during that generation and had no nostalgia for it, so I just got an ultra hdmi modded console, an everdrive and a couple hori pads to check it out a couple years back. I've been rather pleased with my set up.
I love the brawler64 but the Retro-Bit tribute has rumble. I still want to get a wired brawler for games that use both a memory card and rumble pak. Just get like 2 extension cables and your good.
I find it's better to just use a adapter to use the original controller on a PC and just emulate on there. Project 64 has everything you need to make the game play like on original hardware and also supports Reshade for the CRT effect. Me personally I like everything in 4k 120fps HD with upscale textures which Project 64 also can generate for you while playing. The adapter for the N64 controller is only because my Razer xbox controller's modern thumbsticks are way too sensitive for FPS games like Hexen and Duke 64.
I own an N64 that a friend gifted to me, which was his childhood system, which was really kind of him. However I haven't invested in any games, so I still emulate. Though I never owned an N64 growing up nor have nostalgia for it either except playing a bit of Super Mario 64 at a game store.
I'm lucky that when I received my N64 from my dad's best friend as a gift that it came with the aforementioned memory expansion (that came with DK64) and since then I got an Everdrive cartridge so I can play the whole library at my leisure. Didn't know about the Brawler 64 controller so I've now got one on the way. Though I don't plan on having any HDMI mods done to my system as I'm happy as can be with it hooked up to my 27" Sanyo CRT!
finding replacement controllers has become a huge hassle for me. Part of the reason I stick with the original hardware (in gaming in general) is because of the controllers. I got burned with a few online controllers QA but found some descent replacement parts. I love the idea of a wireless controller for the n64 but would definitely need that weird upside down Arwing shape.
The best way to upgrade is to buy an N64 NSO online controller and a bluetooth transmitter by Intec for the N64. This applies to all retro consoles. 8Bitdo does a great job for the SNES. This dongle will use any BT controller you have. If more people knew about this the entire controller aftermarket would be up in shambles. I almost bought a Retro Fighter until I put my brain into action and thought about transmitters.
Sweet I also have a setup with UltraHDMI, Brawler64 Wireless and Everdrive. I didn't know about the ForeverPak though so I'll have to pick one of those up. Great video!
Great video, thanks for sharing. I just ordered the Everdrive x7, N64 will forever be my favorite system. A lot of my old games are lost to time and in trying to replace them, I found the Everdrive is the most cost efficient option.
My setup is simple. I don’t have much space so I made sure to get a 4K TV that still had a composite input option. Using that I got a multi connector to hook up my SNES, N64, PS2 and Wii. It works well. Sure the picture isn’t the best but a tweak of the TV settings can make it work better.
@@RideRedRacer oh I know. It’s just that I have to get an adapter as well on top of that as the TV has no component input. I tried a cheap adapter not long ago and it failed badly. So I know I need to spend more to actually get it to work. But it honestly isn’t the highest of priorities at the moment.
@@ShowMeYourLizardFace oh I bet. My 4K TV however doesn’t have an S Video input though. Just HDMI and composite. Will have to get an adapter for that to if I go that route.
In my area, finding a CRT is becoming harder to find. Thrift stores have stopped offering them, and many family members have upgraded and moved on from them. For those who have the setup, for sure a great way to play.
My setup is as follows. Original N64 jewel swapped Region free adapted Eon Super 64 M-Classic HDMI adaptor Brawler 64 controllers (corded) Super 64 cartridge Runs like a top and I love having it around
I've recently bought the Retrotink 2x, I'm looking to use the S-Video cable, would've loved to get UltraHDMI however it's hard to install plus didn't want to pay for installation. I like the modern accessories like the wireless controller.
Great setup! I have the Tim's RGB mod, Retrotink 5X and the brawler64 wireless. I want to try the Tribute64 wireless too, since it has the vibration integrated.
The HDMI converter is darn near mandatory. Most TV's A) entirely lack component sockets, and B) sit down, fold their arms, and refuse to work when presented with the N64's native resolution.
Great video to check what is possible these days. My N64-Setup: RGB moded EU Console (Its still my childhood console 28 old^^), Brawler Controller, 40 original games but also a everdrive, Retrotink2x + mclassic (I like these Upscalercombo, also use it on my snes). Maybe a Forever pak will added soon. In my opinion: Gameplaywise i never give up on the retrotink2x and brawlercontroller, the other stuff is like nice to have. greetings from germany ! :)
I don't use the original Rumble Pak but a Gamester device that serves as a Rumble Pak (no batteries required) AND as 4 controller paks all in one. Apart from this, I go old school: CRT and original cartridges and controllers, although I sometimes use a Retrobit tribute controller, especially for some racing games and for 1080 Snowboarding (which I don't like to play with a regular controller)
My 1997 controller still works great but I have wireless controller now. Works great with n64, Switch and PC. Still have my original PAL machine but also have a JP console modifed for US games and RGB SCART for use with my CRT.
Great video! I recently got an N64 and picked up the retro64 and Everdrive X7 and I love em. Someday I'll get a CRT when my wife won't kill me for bringing home "that big ugly thing"
I want to replay some of the N64 games and was thinking about doing these uppgrades, but there are so many ways to go it seems. Recently learned about the analogue 3d coming out which looks great, or just getting a mini PC console and I can play everything up to PS3 basically.
What is the second game he showed in the video? I remember playing it as a kid when the n64 first came out Shake it shake it is the phrase I fondly remember
Think a good setup that's missing in the video is playing with the NSO N64 Controller with the BlueRetro N64 adapter. It's like playing with a brand new N64 controller with the correct stick precision and sensitivity(Brawler64 and those hall effect replacement sticks all are more sensitive and deliver a less authentic experience) but wireless and it has built in rumble. The BlueRetro N64 Adapter also emulates 4 controller paks for save games. The NSO controllers are lubed and thus won't wear out nearly as fast as original controllers. The only hassle is that the first time you need to connect to the BlueRetro via Phone/PC with BT and then format the memory slots before N64 games can use them.
I love the fact that you can get an Everdrive and a wireless controller and give a new life on these old consoles cause unless you are a collector its just not possible to get catridges with current prices.

No, these controllers are upgrades, from the originals. Upgrades come in all forms and are not just for a particular set of devices.
Im a simple man, I see a N64 video and I like and subsribe.
I have a N64 and a few games but I mostly play an emulator on my phone with a bluetooth controller. :)
The Sega Genesis was my first console in 1998 or 1999, we got our N64 in 2000.
I did the Super 64 and never look back stoning, and the Everdrive 64 also a MUST
I want a dual analog two cord controller optimized specifically for the 4 games that support it (Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Robotron, and Pod Racer)
I do old school controller and connections.
I bought a brace for my controller dongle so the hang doesn’t rip the port off the pins. They have them on eBay for the brawler and tribute 64
I love mini consoles that don't take much room and have a bunch of games on them. I would love it if I could swap out my wii disc drive for a ssd drive and have all my games downloaded to that incase the discs and the drive quit working
Would love a similar video for Dreamcast, GameCube & PS2.
I’m more of a CRT purist but I’m just glad when anyone plays older games anyway they can!
@@CommodoreFan64 right on 🤙
@@CommodoreFan64yeah its iffy on android oh okay
Me personally have a 36" trinitron vega using s-video. Outcome is a crisp clean resolution. No need for hd stuff.
For me an RGB modded console on CRT with an Hori pad is the best setup that I played.
I ended up grabbing a generic N64 controller from Amazon the one that looks similar to the horipad but larger and the Dpad more towards the left and it's probably the best decision i decided to make.
007 Goldeneye for Switch Online - this Friday! Can't wait!!
I use both -RGB on a SONY PVM as well as a modded PixelFX HDMI on my modern T.V
Definitely getting a wireless Brawler 64 and a forever pack as soon as I can. Thanks, John!
LCD Projector, 007 4 player is my fav
The smoke black N64 is sweet. I’m running the Jungle Green N64 in my game room.
I'm glad I watched this because I forgot about the Foreverpack 64.
Heavy
Ps I used to work at Funcoland and The N64 and Dreamcast are 2 of the best consoles, ever.
Sweet I also have a setup with UltraHDMI, Brawler64 Wireless and Everdrive. I didn't know about the ForeverPak though so I'll have to pick one of those up. Great video!
You are most welcome.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I just ordered the Everdrive x7, N64 will forever be my favorite system. A lot of my old games are lost to time and in trying to replace them, I found the Everdrive is the most cost efficient option.
I use a Vizio flat tv that has RCA input. I do have an adapter from Amazon.
First time viewer- Love your energy and knowledge! (Subscribed!)
Thank you, very interesting. I'm your newest subscriber :)
Get component cables instead, they will blow your mind. So much better than composite
Right on man. As long as you're having fun
I would track down a retrotink 2X-MINI so you can at least use s-video. Its a night and day difference vs composite.
@@ShowMeYourLizardFace oh I bet. My 4K TV however doesn’t have an S Video input though. Just HDMI and composite. Will have to get an adapter for that to if I go that route.
ohh very nice everdrive really like the design etc. you got good !
i had a jungle green n64 i used a e.o.n super 64 hdmi. i used old wired controllers on mine, i sold it last year i felt like it was time.
Old-school CRT with super 64 red cartridge. That’s all you need. Oh and the console lol.
In my area, finding a CRT is becoming harder to find. Thrift stores have stopped offering them, and many family members have upgraded and moved on from them. For those who have the setup, for sure a great way to play.
@@johnhancockretro yes luckily it’s just the same one I’ve always had I dread the day this thing conks out.
Wow that ultra looks good 😊
My setup is as follows.
Original N64 jewel swapped
Region free adapted
Eon Super 64
M-Classic HDMI adaptor
Brawler 64 controllers (corded)
Super 64 cartridge
Runs like a top and I love having it around
I've recently bought the Retrotink 2x, I'm looking to use the S-Video cable, would've loved to get UltraHDMI however it's hard to install plus didn't want to pay for installation. I like the modern accessories like the wireless controller.
you would think there would be a hd upscaling HDMI adapter available by now.
Does ultra hdmi still work today? Just wondering because I might buy it and have it installed.
Idk where to buy it at the moment.
I use a crt with a RGB modded 64 and HD retrovision cables
i go old school but used the retrotink to play my games on a lg oled tv.
That wireless controller looks awesome.
Jeeez... had no idea expansion packs had become that expensive. Good thing I have one already.
The Analogue 3D sounds like it'll be the new definitive way to play N64 with original cartridges, up to 4K resolution.
I remember playing it as a kid when the n64 first came out
Shake it shake it is the phrase I fondly remember
How about an Expansion memory pack with more memory than the original?
I just pulled out my n64 and ordered the brawler 64 last week. Everdrive is hard to find. The x7 is overkill and very expensive.
I did not have access to the NSO N64 controller when making this video.
Are there any options for analog hard-wired controllers?
And by analog I mean non-digital, not referring to the analog stick.
Perfect Dark also require Expasion pack to "unlock" the full game.
That Brawler 64 controller looks cool and would like to get one for my N64, but I Hate the dongle that sticks out
