  • Labels matter. They matter because they can either inhibit self understanding and result in low self esteem, such as being labelled ''weird'' or ''shy'', when these labels might not be wholly appropriate, or they can facilitate self development and progress. Autism is a useful label. I was diagnosed in November 2008, and in this video I outline the steps that led to my diagnosis.

    I really like your bandana. Also I've had people say to me not be defined by my autism, but its who I am. I have obsessions, sensory issues, social issues etc. I mean, you can't not be defined by something you are. That seems like a flat out contradiction to me.

      I agree, and autism is nothing to be ashamed of so it's great to embrace it and accept it. Our whole experience is shaped by our different perceptions, so as you say, of course it is part of our self definition.
