  • Caller Richard has a brain tumour. He’s gone blind and lost the ability to walk.
He can’t work and so can’t provide for his children.
He’s been refused benefits and has now been waiting two years for adequate support.
He admits that the only reason he's alive is because of his family.
Ben Kentish is left 'disgusted' by Richard's case and brands it 'absolutely shameful' that he's not received better treatment.

It started a lot longer back than 2010 - at the tail end of the Labour government under Brown, I had another serious, disabling episode of vertigo - when I told them I'd got vertigo, they said you can't make a claim based on not liking heights! Their medical ignorance knows no bounds, I had to explain what that term meant medically and had to wait 3 months for help. This was the second time I'd had this problem in 20 years - the first time, no problem claiming benefit.

Especially when Ian Duncan Smith shook up benefits by introducing Universal Credit in 2015 I think that has been the one to bring it to the boil and problems have more acute even people on the phone lines I saw a clip of a documentation about universal credit a former support worker telling them to get people who needed help off the phone by telling them to do it all themselves online. When there’s people out there who will struggle or have no access at all to internet making them fall on hard times & that was even before the cost of living crisis we have now.

The problem is not mass wastage, the problem is we need more money to fuel services and the engine of the economy and they have absolutely refused to tax the richest in society. This is what happens when you allow all new wealth to go into the pockets of the already wealthy, they squirrel it away, if you give it to this man he will go out and spend it in his local economy - which is great. The ‘per person’ rather than ‘per household’ child benefit threshold was an indicator for how inept and cruel the Tories were going to be. I was affected by this and left the country in 2011. Best decision I ever made. I’m sure there are hundreds of thousands of people like this poor bloke. I loathe the UK for voting for these Tory criminals for years.

Is this the PIP assessment? They tell us they should have respect as they are professional. Should never have been privatised. They get bonuses for stopping people claiming the benefit? How immoral is that. Poor guy it’s shameful.

Yep. Applied for PIP multiple times. I'm living solely on Universal Credit. I've lost the will to fill in yet another PIP form and be denied, yet again. And that's the entire point of the DWP refusing by default at first - to take any strength you have left, and fritter it away so that you no longer bother them. I've had enough. I don't have the spoons to deal with it, and there is no decent help forthcoming, not even from CAB, who I've been in contact with multiple times, and who do not have anyone on staff who can help with PIP forms. And even if they did, I'm certain that my claim would be denied again. I don't have the strength, the energy, to take it to mandatory consideration. I just don't.

I’m about to have my gall bladder removed after ten years of complaining after the assualt where 3 people went to jail (of 11). I have to use food banks to survive. My surgery is in April. I’ve got to walk to sign on next Thursday 2 miles. My gall bladder is busted and I’m in constant pain. This country is broken.

There is no welfare state, if I lose my job and can’t find something similar I lose my home, yesterday I listened to a 70 year pensioner wishing he didn’t make it to 80 because of the state of this country. But any mention of the super rich paying some more we’re told they’ll just take their money elsewhere, it’s like being held to ransom by multi millionaires. And it’s ingrained in our culture now, people don’t think how can we build a better society they think if I can just get more money I’ll be alright.

I worked in one of the Public libraries that remained open due to austerity (over 300 closed ) we were instructed to help people with claims and basic computer skills, I was no expert. I tried my best, and had to serve all the other customers too. Libraries also host Citizens Advice, provide warmth, safety and interaction for many lonely, disabled, homeless, children who's parents are working when they come out of school. It still haunts me. This Tory rule disgusts me.

That's the point. The Tories have deliberately created a system which delays vulnerable people from getting the help they obviously deserve. All in the hope that some will not feel able to go through the appeals process. Citizens Advice and other organisations have been highlighting the cruelty of it for years.

My heart goes out to this man, contrast this to my treatment when Labour was in power:
In 2003I suddenly felt sick I rang family for help, passed out before getting to A&E, had 3 fits on arrival, tests showed massive brain tumour, was operated on 3 weeks later and discharged after a week with follow up MRIs for 12 years, Thankfully my tumour was benign although I lost my sense of smell I was always grateful that my eyesight was spared. I had a period of paid sick leave after which I had to rely on state sickness payments and the savings I had until I could return to work.
