People of working age people, 18 - 67 has never been a smaller proportion of the population than now. There may be more people in the group but the number each one of us in that demographic has to support is the highest ever and rising. The only age group rising as a proportion of the population is over 67s. Nothing against that age group, I love my parents, but a little bit of self awareness goes a long way when they're trying to stop people coming here to help me shoulder their burden
I take your point. However AI plus ever increasing amounts of automation and the movement of jobs abroad will surely make it difficult to provide jobs for all that need them - including the immigrants we currently need. We have a lot of people struggling either on poverty wages or no wages who need a future (yes James - I do actually interact with such people). It is possible to grow the economy without immigration: you increase growth rate, but to do that requires affordable child care, cheaper houses and better paid jobs.
And....errr..... _people_ to work in the childcare sector and construction. Don't you see that? If you don't have the workers you can never have the results of _their_ non-existent work. Catch 22.

James O'Brien was dishonest here. The caller said he thought people stuck on benefits were victims of tory immigration policy and James turned it round and accused him of saying the state of the economy was the fault of people on benefits.
@@alfsmith4936 It wasn't his argument though is my point. If you think someone is a victim of something, that's the opposite of thinking they are responsible for that thing. The caller may well be wrong to blame tory immigration policy for the state of the economy, but James should have addressed that argument, not attack him for something he didn't say.
Unfortunately it's still regarded as kind of on the sides, it's on radio and edgy. Even the right wing presenters have slowly opened their eyes and started talking back - however ultimately it isn't TV and is still a minority opinion.
That’s ok, it’s still a platform where your average citizen can listen to level headed conversations on a topic. Radio here often has people calling in, saying their peace and it’s left there which lends itself to sensationalist getting the spotlight. It would be nice to have a show that genuinely pokes holes and interrogated the views of both sides even if it’s fringe.
1st caller - on covid...tories were useless - yes agreed.... but actually, labour were worse believe it or not. Both Labour and Tories are not worth a vote. Wouldn't vote either at this stage.
Absurd claim by James that economies can only grow through immigration and population growth. Clearly has no understanding of gdp per capita growth through increasing productivity.
If you are not allowed to vote until you are 18 because you dont understand the word, you should not be allowed to vote after you retire because you don't understand the world! So much power in the hands of people who should not have it.
There are a lot of local people who are claiming benefits as a life choice. No illness or disability, just using a system. We need a caring country to look after thoes who are truly in need.
I share James O'Brien's politics and I have little time for Tory or Brexit voters but I find him oily. He does put words in callers' mouths and deliberately misrepresents what they say.
If it is true that immigration strengthened the economy then why are we still doing so badly? I'm not saying it hasn't, but the premise is belied by everything that we all see in this country. You can't just say to people "but immigration strengthens the economy" when nothing about their lives has been improved while there has been a steep influx of people into the smaller regional cities and villages. "How the cake is sliced" implies that it is a lie that we need immigration, a lie that covers up for greedy people sharing so little of the cake to begin with. Not an unreasonable argument, widening wealth inequality is undeniable. The benefits of immigration are just adding to their pile, not ours.
The population absolutely did grow between 1900-1960. Child mortality rates were massively declining in this time, meaning more people making it to adulthood = higher population = bigger economy.
Great questions from this host! He nails the truth that immigration is vital for any economy that wants to grow its GDP! To hold any other view is to be a flat Earth believer😊

The caller said we didnt have population growth between 1900 and 1960.We did. The population grew by about 30% and that with two world wars killing off significant numbers of men and women too. The growth rate was a lot higher in that period than it has been in modern times.
Before the Tory’s pension age was 65.
A balanced strategy needs to be enacted to manage the way forwards.
Don’t put the over 67’s in a bracket .. I’m 75 .. ardent, passionate remainer who in 2016 literally fell out with neighbours and friend who stupidly voted leave. I’m not anti-immigrant. I know about kindertransportion, Windrush. I know the Tory home office are worse than useless. I know Brexit made everything worse.
Don't worry - life expectancy in the UK plateaued under the 2010 Tory / Lib Dems and has fallen a few years under the subsequent Tory governments.
The great flaw in your plan is that those helpers will get old too. What do we do then - import more helpers to look after them?
Ahhhh. There goes another brexiter angry at himself. 😂😂
Was that Paul Whitehouse on the second call??😂😂
It is possible to grow the economy without immigration: you increase growth rate, but to do that requires affordable child care, cheaper houses and better paid jobs.
Nah the leftwing scam of the pyramid scam is too strong.
And....errr..... _people_ to work in the childcare sector and construction. Don't you see that? If you don't have the workers you can never have the results of _their_ non-existent work. Catch 22.
@RobinHarris .. pick up on “better paid jobs” .. for whom? You sound like BoJo at the Conservative Party Conference. Who does the “lesser paid jobs” to allow those go get “better paid jobs” ie child care? Cheaper houses ?? Dream on.
Pssst,........
The people that (largely) work in child care to make it "Affordable" and in construction to build houses and make them "cheaper",........are...........wait for it.......
Immigrants.
@@darrylsimpson4744 what are you on about?
Look at the facts, wages have stagnated massively over the last 15 years, at least they have for lower earners.
Look at how wages have changed:
Nurse 2010 £22,000
Nurse 2024 £26,000
CEO of a big business, principal of a university, head of a council
2010 £150,000
2024 £400,000
Where do you think the problem lies?
Why most people think that immigrants only hold low skilled pay jobs ??? What about all the minimum income thresholds to be granted visa ? What about foreign students ? Really wish this was more communicated.

Laughing from Ireland .. thanks Bill
Is that supposed to be significant.😀
This is Comedy Gold !! you probably won't believe this but here down in Australia we have exactly the same thinking and many of them are people who came here escaping Thatcherism !!!
We have Kiwis like that too here in OZ. They hate their own government then cry when they don't like what our government does. And most Kiwis here aren't even citizens
This sums up a decades of my life. The words, banging, head, brick & wall. Come to mind. You can bet , despite all the claims to have fallen out of love with Tories. They would come bounding back with open arms, with a sweetener or two. Or will just vote for them anyway, because they will be okay, no matter what.
Oh dear Bill! There's none so blind as those that will not see.
It shouldn't be called the Sunak government; it should be renamed the Sunk government. Any pretensions to being "a government of integrity, accountability and professionalism" is now at an end. It has completely lost its way and has left the whole country in a Slough of Despond.
The funniest thing is a brexiteer using Scottish independence as an example to follow, not realizing they voted to leave the UK to REJOIN the EU...you cant make this stuff up.
Oh how I laughed listening to Bill getting all frustrated and indignant "you keep telling me what I'm saying!" 🤣🤣🤣 Who did Bill think he was talking to? Anyone who calls in and doesn't come prepared for James to run rings around them is seriously deluded - but then I think Bill is probably in a constant state of delusion anyway.
James O'Brien was dishonest here. The caller said he thought people stuck on benefits were victims of tory immigration policy and James turned it round and accused him of saying the state of the economy was the fault of people on benefits.
He used his own argument against him and won.
Spot on form James!
Bill is a Daily Mail reader .
Wish we had this level of journalism in SA. Man what a treat.
eh?
Unfortunately it's still regarded as kind of on the sides, it's on radio and edgy. Even the right wing presenters have slowly opened their eyes and started talking back - however ultimately it isn't TV and is still a minority opinion.
That’s ok, it’s still a platform where your average citizen can listen to level headed conversations on a topic.
Radio here often has people calling in, saying their peace and it’s left there which lends itself to sensationalist getting the spotlight. It would be nice to have a show that genuinely pokes holes and interrogated the views of both sides even if it’s fringe.

I don’t know why O’Brien argues with the intellectually and morally bankrupt.
There no point arguing with informed voters they don't vote to make us all worse off

Indeed, well said
Its absurd to think you can just squeeze productivity out of the workforce forever. Thats so dumb and greedy capitalist view

I share James O'Brien's politics and I have little time for Tory or Brexit voters but I find him oily. He does put words in callers' mouths and deliberately misrepresents what they say.
I wouldn’t employ that first caller. Would anyone else?
The loudmouth on the bus springs to mind.
....and most of the working classes travel on buses.😊
Total smoke show! U destroyed his nonsense positions. Got em'😂
The benefits of immigration are just adding to their pile, not ours.
i'm glad he said English workers.
They are all a shambles regardless of the party. It concerns me that people have to pick a side to root for. Why? When they are all horrendous.
.... "English people". 👀 This is why we love ya -wales 🤦
This is funny😂😂
The population of the UK in 1900 was 37 million, in 1960 it was 52 and a half million. I'd argue that's a fairly vast increase.
Unfortunately I think the increasing issues with climate change will make controlling immigration a moot point.
This is too ludicrous to be true. Are you sure this isn’t a set up??
Of course it is, they screen the callers before letting them on the show. They don't have eloquent people who disagree with O'braindead on.
The population absolutely did grow between 1900-1960. Child mortality rates were massively declining in this time, meaning more people making it to adulthood = higher population = bigger economy.
Why would anyone speak to this .
Doesn't work. Blames others who do work. Smart guy.
How do I get one of those mugs?!! 🤩

Great questions from this host! He nails the truth that immigration is vital for any economy that wants to grow its GDP! To hold any other view is to be a flat Earth believer😊
