@@Teilerderden it’s not though, i completed it in the first 2 days it came out and it was awesome. And this is coming from someone who has the original silent hill 2 as their favorite game of all time
I'm just disappointed how they change Mary's letter on the end of this game. We can't have women apologizing to men today lol even though that was the entire point to see how toxic the situation between the two was getting. Mary's voice acting is bad too. Original Mary's VA literally cried when she read that letter so the new one is just terrible in getting that point across. I still remember the original performance vividly two decades later but this would just be so forgettable.
@NinjapowerMS I haven't played the original game and i just watched the og ending and you're definitely right about mary's letter. I think we can thank the DEI consultant piece of trash who apparently hates gamers... and men...
When the original game devs praise your remake of their game (even claiming some of your new mechanics improved upon their original), you know you made it big. Super proud of how well this game came out.
It’s on twitter. The director of original silent hill 2 made a new twitter account just to sing the praises of the remake (and flame Konami for the trash marketing) Masashiro Ito who worked on the original game also praised the remake
It's wild how people are trashing it, saying it doesn't do justice to the original, all the while people who were part of the original praise this iteration of it.
Charlie, I can see why people think the combat in SH2 is clunky, but see it from this point of view. James is an average man (physically wise) he doesn’t know how to fight and I doubt he even knows how to shoot well besides “point and shoot” so when he fights he swings like it’s his last Hail Mary, and his guns sway a little cause he doesn’t know how to steady his pistol well. He’s not Leon who is a trained agent who can back flip sexily. James is just an average Joe fighting horrors beyond his comprehension
His character does not justify the stale combat. Some people just look at the gameplay and judge it on its own merit. Using the story or character to say it's fine is just cope.
@@DS3Enjoyer For clarification I am talking about the remake. Also I don't think it's cope, for me it makes sense. albiet this is fiction but I would probably react the same. Throwing hail marry's in every swing, my gun will be swaying a little, and I'd be kicking every down monster full force. How come you think the combat is stale? and how do you think they could improve it? I hope you won't suggest anything like Leon because he's a spec ops person while James is an average joe
@@DS3Enjoyer Wait why would you agree with the original but not the remake? They have the same philosophy of immersion over full-action, tight combat (like RE titles). Him being a total badass would genuinely mar the intended experience. In fact, most of the fanbase was hoping combat *would* still be a bit janky. I think it's just a matter of preference for you. Not to say they couldn't find some ways of improving it as it went on. But hey, you can always get the chainsaw in NG+ :p
Combat in horror games are a pretty complicated topic. If you lean too much into the combat and have a lot of encounters, you’ll slowly feel less scared and pay more attention to the combat itself, whether you’re ACTUALLY having fun constantly fighting. I think games like resident evil 2 remake do this really well. Combat in the police station is ill adviced due to how cramped the level is and the limited resources you have. Instead of blasting through enemies, you’re stunning and running past zombies, which is technically combat but still clenches your cheeks a little bit. I get that this isn’t resident evil but I’m just using that as an example for how to properly make engaging/scary combat.
Yeah, you are kinda right, but keep in mind that stunning zombies and running past them is something us veterans do. Players who are new to series or genre in general will absolutely try to kill every single zombie. Just look at Steam forum how many complain about running out of ammo early in the game. However us veterans (I assume you are as well?) kinda have this instinct to run pass most cannon fodder enemies. Heck I did this in Silent Hill remake as well for a while, it was just my instinct to avoid most of the enemies, fighting only ones that directly stand in my way or jump at me via cutscene. However enemies in this game are lot more nimble and aggressive overall, especially as games goes further and James slips further into abyss, so combat becomes unavoidable. But early game? I actually skip most of the enemies on pure instinct.
Yeah the combat system in the remake feels like another glorified CoD, plus there was no eerie ambience that followed when you face enemies in key locations in the game. Plus there should be a camera grain filter effect its apart of the formula to the horror of SH
@@badshootykat5574 There's "90s" filter in game options to make the game look more like original and you unlock like ten more filters after beating the game.
@@J.J.Jameson_of_Daily_Bugle nice to know then, but even if it wasn't default for the game It wouldn't be as noticeable as the lack of eerie ambience because it turned-out the ambience is there its just sadly degraded to low hums in the BGM. This remake is a demake from the original
@@badshootykat5574 You just keep moving the goal post at what's "wrong" with the game. Sound and ambience was perfectly fine in this game, it's actually one of the better things about the remake. Both games are great. Stop basing your opinions on youtubers, especially ones who like to push agenda and narratives.
Yeah considering they had 3 things so far so revive the ip, including the streaming show that was an absolute mess and a mediocre free game the franchise really needed the win
@@YouYubeEnjoyerNum1 Dead Space probably had a much higher budget. Silent Hill 2 remake has had the 3rd biggest launch based on player count ever for Konami.
@@SNP2082 It didn't. I don't know if you've played the Dead Space remake, but I have, as well as the Silent Hill 2 remake. While it's obvious that some corners were cut in the Silent Hill 2 remake, it's also clear that a lot more money was put into it. Dead Space had next to no advertising, almost no cutscenes, and the few cutscenes it does have don't feature the same high-quality MoCap and facial animations (although they are still pretty good) as Silent Hill 2, which also has an abundance of cutscenes. Meanwhile, Silent Hill 2 was advertised at multiple third-party conventions for years, with posters and graffiti in real life, as well as online and other types of ads. Konami is even paying popular live streamers in Japan to play the game, and that's really expensive. On the other hand, in Dead Space, even basic animations like Isaac's run cycle and combat animations look pretty poor by modern AAA standards (they even reused animations from the original game). So it's really not a debate, in my opinion. Silent Hill 2 had more money put into it.
If all five characters James, Maria, Eddie, Laura, And Angela walked around Silent Hill together as a team it would look like a depressed scooby-doo squad.
No one comes up with their own shit anymore. At least quote one the 5 other people who have also said this exact same thing on various other Silent Hill 2 remake videos
Especially on hard mode which is what I did for my first playthrough. Monsters will throw you curve balls just to make you consider whether or not fighting is even a good idea.
@@olyophogrific The remake has plenty of unskippable combat encounters, so it could potentially be a dealbreaker for some people. That said, it's a fantastic game where the good parts more than make up this one shortcoming.
@@kamikazesoppyou guys make it sound like the combat is totally shit and it really isn’t awful. It’s far better than Callisto’s trash heap. Though I will admit the fact enemies follow you through rooms far more frequently than an RE remake is what makes combat feel so dragged out and annoying imo. That’s its biggest issue since in RE 2 and 3 remakes never had the regular zombies follow you room to room as badly as this game. Only really thing I remember hard following you was Mr. X and the occasional nemesis but in the early half of 3.
I'm in the alternative hospital rn. The atmosphere here is so thick, overwhelmingly oppressive and suffocating that I had to stop playing at some point just to catch my breath. I actually never felt that in the original (well, maybe a bit in Toluca prison, but not to such extent). This is how I know the game's good. I've always loved RE series but tbh for me, Resident Evil never came close to the best of SH games in terms of atmosphere and the feeling of pure nightmare / horror, descent into hell type of thing. And this remake is one of the best in this regards.
Bloober really pulled success from the jaws of defeat. A lot of people were hating on it before it even came out and when it finally dropped, so many people switched instantly
Silent Hill: Ascension didn't help build confidence. Yes, I know that was a different development team and company but that was a bad start to Silent Hill's revival. Glad the remake corrected the course. Now here's hoping Silent Hill F will be an A+ and not just an F.
With every project before it and bloobers track record along with bad marketing I feel alot of people were right to feel that it was gonna be another failure or mediocre at best. I'm glad I was wrong and it seems to prove that when someone is there to help steer bloober in the right direction they can make a really great game
@@livingcorpse5664 they fumbled Mary's voice acting and change her letter because we can't have women apologizing to men even though that was the point of the entire letter and how bad the situation between the two was getting lol. It had a mediocre impact when the original actor for Mary poured her emotions out literally reading that letter on In water ending it's bit of a bummer personally to see the ending just become so dull to me in the modern remake. Also it's hard to ruin a remake as long as you're genuinely trying to recreate the game. Everything is literally made for you just have to modernize graphics and visuals but maybe you can't quite hit the details as evident by this - it's good a remake but you can't recreate everything perfectly. I still don't trust Konami with the Silent hill franchise. Surprise me with a new game not something that has already existed prior.
The combat isn’t as tight as resident evil because Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield and Leon Kennedy are all police officers, respectively, and all have combat training. James Sunderland is just an average Joe and we don’t know if he’s ever fired a gun before or been in a fight. For him, he’s just trying to survive if someone like run that situation it would be a very different thing.
This is a cop out and all comments like this are a cop out. Playing as a restricted character who in theory should have limited combat ability DOES NOT EXCUSE having a badly implement and designed combat system in a game. There is a way to do this correctly where it feels awkward and difficult, restrictive and suffocating WITHOUT being a janky mess that actively de-immerses you and reminds you you’re playing a video game. That is just called bad game design. Stop the cope.
@@DanandDrake i mean, the combat doesnt feel like a mess at all, it’s serviceable for the type of game it is and it has a lil learning curve thats it. If you’re going into silent hill expecting sekiro or resident evil combat, you’re going to the wrong game.
@@DanandDrake The thing is that it's not badly implemented. It's very well implemented in fact. Every hit is very responsive, the hit detection is very good, when hits connect you can feel them connecting properly (boss fights is where it fails in this aspect for me). It's just very down to earth and it never reminded me I was playing a game. It actually made me feel scared and just like James "Trying to fight for my life every time I swing"
Charlie is kinda like Professor Calamitous from Jimmy Neutron where he has tons of great ideas that he does for a while and then never really finishes them. You see this with the Moist Meter, the Liquid Ladder, I’m pretty sure there hasn’t been an episode of his wrestling league in a long time, he had this one thing he did for like an episode where he broke down the fall of Blockbuster using animation, shit going alllllll the way back to when I was in high school and first started watching him (Charlie is a year younger than I am) with his Fun Tactics series. I doubt he’d do it, but I think it’d be fun if Charlie revisited some of his old abandoned ideas because he’s had a ton of great ones that I feel like he gave up on too soon.

Long answer: if you’re a fan of silent hill and have a ps5 then yes. Longer answer: worth playing but is it worth getting a ps5 for it? No, is gonna save the silent hill series going forward? probably not this is Konami after all, is this as good as the original? Depends on if you actually grew up with the original or played it before playing this, my opinion it’s a fine remake, but didn’t hit as hard as the original, but to be fair I was much younger, maybe your perspective might be different who knows.
That’s part of what AGGRAVATED me about some of the “early criticism” that was all ready to classify this game a “flop.” Now, the concerns against Bloober Team’s batting average? That, I could COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND (while still maintaining “cautiously optimistic” that EVEN THEY couldn’t screw this remake up TOO BADLY since the two things they’ve always been CONSISTENT WITH were visuals and atmosphere). But all the early complaints about “how combat looked” or whatever? I was always just reading those like, “yea….NO OFFENSE, but you clearly never played Silent Hill because that’s NEVER BEEN a strong component of the games.”
I've been a big fan of SH games for awhile and was really surprised remake turned out to be THIS good. Surely not without room for improvement, it still delivered a lot. I think they were restraint in some moments to not piss off gatekeeping strict OG fans, but I doubt adding couple more melee weapons, mechanics and features would hurt the narrative. I agree about enemy variety - they could've done more on that in the second half, maybe give even more presence to Closer/Mandarin monster, especially in Toluca Prison. Now I kinda wish to see SH1 and SH3 remakes.
SH4 is mega underrated, the whole Team Silent era needs remakes. Wouldn't mind seeing Origins get some love too, provided they put extra work into that one.
@@nomorepartiezz well they both took inspiration from each other since the release of the first games. The only difference is that silent hill is active once again.
I actually think the combat is absolutely perfect for what the game was going for; you can really feel the desperation and anxiety in the encounters. You're right though it gets tedious after several hours.
I would say it's melee combat. It gets boring after a while. In Callisto protocol, almost all the engagements end up in melee and that game's combat was inspired by silent hill 2. It was an absolutely horrible game.
I think the combat is great, but the issue is that they give you too much of it. It's fine when it's in spurts where you're fighting one enemy that scared you, but fighting 5 monsters in a room back to back at times makes you feel exhausted.
I think honestly the anxiety and fear they caused was the best aspect of it to me. Even though it was the same enemies I never knew when they were gonna pop out and hide from me and jump out of dark corners. It always kept me on edge. The boss fights too we’re much more advanced especially Mary at the end I had to use strategy with that one.
On combat: Bloober team missed an opportunity to add a last section/end game strong melee weapon. The OG Silent Hills all had at least one ( Sh1fire ax, sh2 great sword, sh3 katana and maul, sh4 rusty axe and pickaxe) they should've added maybe pyramid heads spear, a rusty axe, machete, etc. Something that would've made the last section of combat where melee killed in 4 hits or less
Hope people buy this so we can get a Silent Hill 1, 3, and 4 remakes. I don't want a Dead Space situation where people barley bought Dead Space Remake which lead to Dead Space 2 Remake being canceled.
I fucking hope NOT. I absolutely do not want these jackasses to DEFILE yet another Silent Hill game. Double so if it's yet another DEImake in vein of TLOU-RE4R. This shit is exactly what every SH fan was afraid of. RE2-4 demakes sucked ass. Dead Space demake was terrible DEI shit and worse than the OG. These valor stealing hacks need to learn to make NEW games, and not just exploit old IPs.
As someone whose always been interested in checkin out SH, the age of the originals were a pretty big barrier, and I didn’t rlly know where to start. I’m considering this one cause from what I hear it’s the best in the series besides 3, and I’ve loved the music I’ve heard so far.
@@PeakDennisReynolds The games do not need to be remade and it shouldn't be the norm. There have been so many remakes in the AAA market that it probably takes up a third of the titles in the past year or so. They need to make NEW GAMES there hasn't been a new one in FOREVER
I actually liked the combat a lot in sh2 remake. I like it was reaction based since it forces you to play around the monsters instead of in re where I’m kinda just mowing through zombies. That and the bosses were super fun.
I also find it really solid. The game sometimes throws at you multiple enemies of different types, and you have to adapt to them at the same time. It's really solid
mowing thru zombies? i think any of the re games need to be played on hard, easy and medium just take out way too much of the gameplay and have much more complexity and isn’t easy af, sh2 doesn’t even feel like combat , which again both these games shouldn’t even be compared tbh
@@xzay. i played on hard. Resources are not an issue like the older games. You play the og re1 and re2 and cv you can soft lock your game. The modern games give you so much ammo as long as you’re not an idiot even on hard you can mow through most hordes with ease. I will day re4 has an interesting combat system but in return it kills most of the horror. The only time you can really struggle is re3 on inferno mode which would be great but re 3 blows as a game and as a remake.
I was one of the dudes who had absolutely no faith in bloober team, but god-damn, they managed to revive one of my favorite games when no one believed in them. I doubted them, but they went above and beyond.
I was bit skeptical but had some faith in them, because they mentioned in one of their interviews long before they got to work on Silent Hill that their main inspiration is Silent Hill and they are big fans of SH2, and Layers of Fear was actually inspired by it. LoF actually got lot of good buzz back in the day.
@@toplay1764 At the very least, it means it's been able to capture the overall same vision the original had. Imagine yourself in those shoes, you make a game like silent hill 2, it gets praise for 20+ years. Then a new team takes it on. You don't want them to ruin the entire experience for new players that have never played it before, because then they'd assume the original was just as bad. Or maybe you'll even be a bit self concious, thinking if everyone says they did it better this time around then it'll completely replace the original. So it really is huge praise for the original director to make statements like that. It shows the original content of the game was respected and the vision wasn't changed.
I would have got this but then metaphor released and I tried the demo. It’s quickly becoming my game of the year - it’s just so good. I think I’ll pick up silent hill on sale, and it’s great to see how good it is. I’m really impressed with the atmosphere and sound design. I need to play this at night with headphones on.
@@anonanon3112how do they water it down? The story is the same all the major points are there. Hell they add more depth. The abstract daddy fight has more lore. The Eddie fight makes more sense. The labyrinth finally isn’t the worst level in the game.
Best survivor horror game period, i love the fact that whenever you know the meaning of each monster it adds a lot more depth and substance to the story, masterpiece of a game idc
This game was truly exceptional. However one aspect that I found less than satisfactory was the navigation. As Charlie mentioned maneuvering through certain parts of the game was quite challenging particularly the hospital section. This was the one area in the entire game that consumed a significant amount of time due to the difficulty in finding my way around. I eventually managed to progress with the aid of a RUclips video which I played alongside the game for guidance. I must admit the hospital section was quite demanding in terms of navigation. The challenge was not only in finding your way around but also in solving puzzles and locating the key passwords for these puzzles. Furthermore you had to collect various items to complete a puzzle all while fending off monsters. This was particularly difficult without the chainsaw which is only available after completing the game and starting a new game plus. Without the chainsaw it takes numerous hits to defeat some of the enemies even on the easiest difficulty level. Consequently your health is significantly depleted leaving your character on the brink of death and your screen bathed in red. This necessitates the use of a healing item as it becomes nearly impossible to discern what's on the screen. Despite the challenges posed by the hospital area I thoroughly enjoyed the game. There are far more positive aspects to appreciate than negatives. I would unequivocally recommend this game for purchase. It successfully creates an eerie and frightening atmosphere delivering a uniquely uncanny gaming experience.
The rarest instance of the underdog coming out swinging and winning against all odds. My first playthrough was so impactful and emotional for me. As a huge fan of the source material I loved the remake.
I’m just so happy classic survival horror franchises are coming back. Resident Evil, Alan Wake, Dead Space, and now Silent hill? We’re living in a golden age of survival horror. Even alien isolation 2 got announced!
I will say, I watched my older brother and his friend play Silent Hill games. I always had a fascination with Pyramid Head and the nurses. Being able to play it myself and actually experience and understand what is going on, is so awesome. I 100% recommend the game. The only issue is the frame drops... AT THE WORST TIMES! That's my only complaint!
As someone that hasn't played the original SH2, this remake makes me want to play the OG now. Resident Evil 4 remake gave me the same reaction, as I had only played up to the 2nd boss in the OG version and never played any of the other games before. I like the fact that I can play RE4 remake, and yet the original remains essentially a different game for me to experience. The Half-Life series is my favorite of all time, and I love that I can play HL1 and Black Mesa and have two different experiences in the first installment of the series. If the OG Silent Hill 2 is quite a different game than the remake (and it sounds like that's the case), I will be even more excited to play it eventually.
The combat is the absolute best possible outcome for a silent hill game. Anything more (like stealth, bombs, traps, blocking, parrying, tsking cover etc...) would ruin everything.
Story, ambience, the tone, character voice acting, the distortion. It's hell good, plus the enemies that HIDES. The combat is SUPPOSED to feel janky because this normal dude that don't have fighting background (DEFINITELY LIKE YOU IN REAL LIFE IF YOU THE MC). It's a HORROR game I tell ya. And a good remake
@ yes lmao it reviewed better across the board with nearly every user and critic review scores. Plus it’s a better game. Wukong is a 7/10 on a good day. Beat it in 3 days and have zero desire to play again. Too many little issues that made it a lackluster attempt at things done far better in other titles. It’s a good game but not a great one. That remake is great. I would wager you haven’t even played the remake
They nailed sound and atmosphere. I agree that the voice acting is better. There are certain scenes in OG SH2 that are kind of cringe or just funny, like Angela asking you if you’re gonna love her towards the end. At the same time, certain scenes lost emotional impact IMO. For example, I actually like Prison Maria’s talk in the OG version more. The “I’m not your Mary” has more bite in the OG, the whole scene is more…sinister. The new VA went a different way. Another example is Mary reading her letter during the ending. In the OG, she is about to cry, you hear her voice break several times. You don’t hear this with the remake’s VA. I have more examples but I’ll stop there. Lastly, 100% agree the bosses were better than the OG. Really liked what they did with the finale, compared to the OG. Edit: I did have some stutter and like 3 spots with bad bad frame drops.
Hell nah. They ruined it all. The voice acting and character models + behavior are massive downgrades. The cinematography is a massive step down. Turning a slow-burn atmospheric horror adventure game into yet another full blown OTS action game = insulting as fuck.
The voice acting is subjective but i have to disagree, most of the goofy aspects of the voice acting were due to lenguage barriers and limitations, and when the voice acting wasnt weird, it was one of the best that i ever heard, guy cihi for me is the only james sunderland. Specially monica morgan carried the whole show in that sense, the iconic "in my restless dream i see that town" was because of her. Tho, in sh3 most of this problems dissapear wich is why the sh3 voice acting was so good
The combat is actually fine, the problem is the density of enemies, they are terrifying at first but by the end of the hospital you have hack and slashed and shot through SO many spongy ass enemies that they lose all potential for intimidation and fear. You feel like fucking John Wick by the end of the experience instead of an avg guy
this comment is going to get lost in the sea of comments - but it makes full sense for the combat not to be guns blazing, since James is your average joe adult, whereas the characters in RE are professionals
I agree about the combat for sure and how it’s never been the focal point, but even with the new mechanics, I honestly think it makes you feel pretty hopeless as well. James isn’t a super soldier or cop, he’s just a normal guy and his voice actor makes him feel so pathetic as he winces as he hits enemies. The original was definitely more or less just run away because you can’t do anything. But in this game, it really does make you feel like you have to win a fight to survive. I do agree with the enemy variety though and it should’ve probably had a bit more enemies to fight that were original to this game, but like you said, not the focal point.
I think the clunky, simplistic combat actually worked very well. And I think they added enough varieties to the basic enemies as the game goes on that it never got tedious for me.
The nostalgia for this remake has given great flashbacks, engaging characters, captivating story, it’s the same feeling I had years ago in the original.
The game does a commendable job bringing back the eerie, uncanny vibe that we loved in the original. Could be great if they paid more attention to enhancing the combat dynamics in the future.
That misses the point though. You're supposed to be a bit helpless, a bit useless. James is just a normal guy thrust into a nightmarish world fighting for his life. Personally think they got the balance spot on: between making it sufficiently awkward to match the character and make it a challenge, without it detracting from the gameplay.
you guys are missing the point, the combat in a lot of the SH games are intentionally clunky. your not meant to feel like Doom Guy shredding through everything.
Great to hear that this kept that odd Twin Peaks-like vibe. Mine came in the mail late, so I started the OG S. H. for the 1st time since release. Bringing back memories (& going to compare them). Love the OG one, tho he gets out of breath a wee bit too easy, if you ask me. *As for the battling/fighting in this game, I surmise the fighting isn't "supposed" to be top notch, because he isn't a fighter.* The OG one got that point across .. a bit too much, with losing breath. Can't wait to play it next.
My only complaint with the combat is the very first enemy. In the original game, when you see the first Lying Figure, it doesn't fight back at all, putting more on the psychological aspect of "Was this a real person or some creature created by the town?" Now, in the remake, the Lying Figure actually does fight back which takes away from the psychological aspects of game since we know that the enemies are related to the psychosis of James in some regard. I haven't gotten that far only because my controller now has major stick drift and I have to spend a good bit to get a new one or you know... be having James move left a lot when I'm not doing anything. But from what I've seen and heard, yeah it is really freaking good. I was hesitant cause Bloober Team haven't been good in the past with their portrayal of psychologically, mentally fucked characters and other controversies but I can say without a doubt this has been a good addition to my collection of games. (Edit:) I realized I left out something about the original that I haven't progressed far enough into the remake to see yet. In the original game, when you go back to where you killed the first enemy, there's police tape around the area blocking it off as if some horrific crime has taken place. Again, this plays into the psycho-analyzing of the characters and if what happened there really was real. That's why I started this initial complaint but I'm hoping it'll be there still in the remake.
Not only that but James isn't exactly cornered here, so it doesn't make sense for him to just fight. He has room to run where as in the original he would have to crawl out of the tight spot he's in.
I've played the original game recently. The first lying figure you fight DOES fight back. It just usually takes a while for it to use its vomiting attack, which isn't really any different from any other lying figure in the game.
@@LubeyZM True, I did start to look back at that. Turns out it does fight back, it's just that it takes a lot longer before it does. Either way, I still think the theory is correct that it was a real person but could just be talking out of my ass right now. Appreciate the fix however!
This is not true, it fights back and it will spit on you, it's just that it's tutorial monster meant to teach you how to fight, so they give you some slack and it takes a while for it to attack. But it will start attacking if you don't attack it first for some time.
For those who don know the back story of kojima and what konami did to him, for him to praise the game (and probably praising mostly bloober devs), speak volumes. Kojima is legend status. Even tho i miss my resident evil 4 remake gunplay, re4/re2 remake doesnt come close in terms of horror and ambience, also music. You have to try it late at nigh solo with the lights out…so creepy. Forced to watch Seinfeld after to cleanse the nightmare fuel before sleep😂. 10/10 for a remake, bloober cooked and stayed faithful to the og.
Thr combat is satisfying if you enjoy the idea of a man with no training doing his best to fight monsters. That and once you figure out enemies have particular hit locations, which cause different kinds of openings, and like the sounds they make when you hit them.
I’ve not even finished the remake yet but for me it’s absolutely amazing. I ADORE Silent Hill 2, when I played the original I was obsessed with it, it is in my personal opinion the best horror game of all time. The story to this day is so freaking good. And the fact that all the enemy types and such have a meaning as to why they look the way they do, it’s phenomenal. Psychological horror at its best. I really hope with the success of this remake we might see more remakes and a real come back for Silent Hill in the same way Resident Evil has made a return.
I actually really liked the combat. It really felt like it was realistic; James is a regular guy, of course he's not going to be Leon level badass from Resident evil 4.

I'm honestly shocked how they took the original games more clunky combat and translated that into the 3rd person perspective that they've adapted the game to. I was honestly worried that they were going to make the game more like the Resident Evil remakes and completely miss the point of the original game but I'm glad to say that they didn't do that. GAME = GOOD
I get why the combat can get teddious, because in the original you can pass most of the enemy there, like you dont have to kill all of them to progress. But in remake, since the apartment, it's almost impossible to pass them all and you have to kill them to progress.
I was just gonna say the same thing! They gotta get in there and remake 1, 3 and maybe 4 (if there’s time/money) then GTFO! Also dude @HamburgerWasteland is such a sick handle you should have videogame named after you!! (P.s. i swear I’m not a bot even though my comment here sounds weird af)
Absolutely! They actually did a smart move remaking Silent Hill 2 first because it’s more ambiguous and is almost entirely about James, basically an offshoot... but Silent Hill 1 & 3 are about the town and builds on overarching Silent Hill themes. Seriously just imagine the lore dump in the new ones!!! Harry and Heather would be reading so many books in the Silent Hill Historically Society!
@HamburgerWasteland I know 2 is the darling but SH3 is my personal favorite. Heather's a way better protagonist and 3 is by far the actual scariest Silent Hill. The only thing that suffered to a degree was the story, although it was still good. If they can remake 3 and improve the story, I think it could catipult it ahead of 2 and make it recognized as the best Silent Hill.
The 4 enemy types have variations, the lying figure has the variation in which it pukes a lot when it dies, the mannequin become spider-like and the nurses you have the ones holding a pipe and the ones holding a scalpel/knife. If the devs were to introduce new enemies they would have to get the og Team Silent to come up with something new, imho.
@@sunderland69 Yes, but each monster was designed with specific symbolisms in mind, ones that play HEAVILY into James' character. Adding new monsters would've not only compromised that, but would've also just deviated too much from the original.
I agree about the combat, but I don’t really know how they could beef it up without it basically becoming Resident Evil 4. A wide arsenal of weaponry isn’t really Silent Hill’s MO.
Thank you, you described this like a true game reviewer unlike most people that only go for games for just gameplay but if you know silent hill this is what it’s about
Charlies playthrough of Silent Hill was the only playthrough I expected was actually going to be silent, every other playthrough has some form of screaming or terror. Did not disappoint.
Honestly yeah, this game is so much more approachable than the original. I beat the og like a few weeks before this remake was announced and I LOVED it, but I knew it wasn’t a perfect game. Controls, combat, story, environments, enemy designs, bosses, and even the voice acting all feel like they were improved upon. If you’re a fan of survival horror, you’ll love the story. If you’re a fan of immersive sims, you’ll ADORE this game.
I needed some more moments that correlate: Failure means someone perishes in a hallway Success means they see it to the end for a different ending Coming back to see someone and check on them registers, likewise not coming back to check on them at all More puzzles, less running around (hospital could use less fetch quest and more puzzle, or let it be a setting where stuff is happening in the background, through your choices and actions, without your knowledge, double points for him feeling judgement from the people at the hospital for how well/poorly they think he treats his wife, is likewise the place that judges him the most by the end in Silent Hill)
He did a stream covering his past percentage ratings and realized a lot of them didn't make any sense, like him giving him worst movie of the year a 50% or something, so he decided to stop doing percentages and just talk about the game and if its worth it or not

I'm just disappointed how they change Mary's letter on the end of this game. We can't have women apologizing to men today lol even though that was the entire point to see how toxic the situation between the two was getting. Mary's voice acting is bad too. Do u have a link to this? I love seeing this sort of thing it makes me happy lmao
It’s on twitter. The director of original silent hill 2 made a new twitter account just to sing the praises of the remake (and flame Konami for the trash marketing)
Masashiro Ito who worked on the original game also praised the remake

@@ricardohernandez8683 Sadly can't send the link, but look up how the original game director for SH2 reacted to the remake.
Unless you meant the original. In which case, I mostly agree
@@DS3Enjoyerimagine your typical ds3 enjoyer in that situation. It would literally just be Eddie

Sales-wise on PC it's doing worse than Dead Space Remake, and that was a flop according to EA.

Was not expecting this remake to be good it’s addictive and quiet intense at times

I was surprised by how good it was. I have a few nitpicks, but generally it's a big improvement over the original.
Charlie, you MUST bring back the moist meter

Yes. It’s goty contender so far. Much better of a candidate than wukong imo
No
@ yes lmao it reviewed better across the board with nearly every user and critic review scores.

When blooper team made better remake than ubisoft this year.
7:04 thats jst silent hill 2
Puzzles are significantly more fun than the original!
I MADE SILENT HILL 2
Bloober Teams plays now offical with the big boys. Congrats!
When I was a kid the nurses creep me out and every time u moved they moved 😭😭😭my fav part in the original
He has room to run where as in the original he would have to crawl out of the tight spot he's in.
i mean he kinda trespassed in that guy's house

Missed opportunity to call it loud mound tbh
It's a truly worthwhile remake. Bloober team really did it justice.
I actually really liked the combat. It really felt like it was realistic; James is a regular guy, of course he's not going to be Leon level badass from Resident evil 4.
0:40 The combat is old school combat put into a modern game
In what universe is this Old School? It’s more comparable to games like Calypso Protocol
Combat isn't the main thing in Silent Hill games.
Yup overall this game so good
I loved it so much, as a fan of the original. It was a huge part of my childhood
The "feet monsters" running to hide is just so fun to watch!

The only reason he didn't say it because he's right. This game is not for everyone, especially now when the Silent Hill 2 fanbase is divided
@@FrosteryGaming The fanbase is not divided. The vast majority, I would say 95%+ of the fanbase love it, and the game reviewing so well everywhere, including having and Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam are proof of that. We'll just have to wait a bit, they haven't denied a port
100% giving Bloober Team props. They proved me wrong and I am happy I can say that.
Buy it so they’ll remake Silent Hill 1 (and let you play as Cybil in SH1R, Born From A Wish style)
@SuPeRNinJaRed I'm so sick of remakes, but after playing this, I would love a Silent Hill 3 Remake more than anything.
@@HamburgerWasteland then they have to remake 1 because 1 is actually scary and it definitely needs to fix its performance issues
God i hated the spider mannequins in the prison
They literally had the dude who created monsters in og game, Masahiro Ito.
@@sunderland69 Yes, but each monster was designed with specific symbolisms in mind, ones that play HEAVILY into James' character. Adding new monsters would've not only compromised that, but would've also just deviated too much from the original.

Crazy that every complaint he had were the same complaints the original had . They truly did a bang on job.
I agree about the combat, but I don’t really know how they could beef it up without it basically becoming Resident Evil 4. A wide arsenal of weaponry isn’t really Silent Hill’s MO.
Thank you, you described this like a true game reviewer unlike most people that only go for games for just gameplay but if you know silent hill this is what it’s about
One of the best game I have ever played
Oh c'mon, the combat is like the only thing you can argue is "better". They are completely different beasts.
As much as I absolutely loved the remake, Charlie’s review is pretty on point
I needed some more moments that correlate:
Failure means someone perishes in a hallway
Success means they see it to the end for a different ending
Coming back to see someone and check on them registers, likewise not coming back to check on them at all
More puzzles, less running around (hospital could use less fetch quest and more puzzle, or let it be a setting where stuff is happening in the background, through your choices and actions, without your knowledge, double points for him feeling judgement from the people at the hospital for how well/poorly they think he treats his wife, is likewise the place that judges him the most by the end in Silent Hill)
