    📜 Video's transcript:
You have probably already seen advanced lyre players "adding" notes to their lyre by playing on different parts of their strings; I am talking about the "Harmonics," an astounding skill, no doubt!
At first sight, this might look "magical" and too difficult for most of us. But, let me assure you that it is possible and quite doable for every lyre player, no matter your level.
In this video, I am going to share with you 5 secrets for playing perfect harmonics, starting with the theory and going all the way up to the practical aspects of this amazing skill.
#1 Understand the Mathematics Behind the Harmonics
First of all, we really need to understand the mathematics behind Harmonics. And this isn't so difficult, as it might sounds.
Pythagoras, the ancient Greek philosopher, was the one who proved that there is a direct connection between sound and mathematic ratio.
He used his monochord, a string instrument with only one string as the name in Greek implies, and divided its string into equal parts: in half, in thirds, in fourths, and go on.
As the story goes, he then realized that these produced ratios were the reason why the string sounded differently.
Putting his theory into practice, if we have a string tuned in note C and play the harmonic on 1/2, we will get the note C one octave higher!
If we do the same on 1/3, then we will get a fifth higher or the note G!
And, if we do the same on 1/4, then we will get the note C again, but this time two octaves higher!
And we can do that everywhere on our lyre, producing 3 more notes on every string!
#2 Find the Perfect Spot on your String and Mark it
As you try to do that, you will soon realize that it is crucial hitting each string on the right spot with precision! You need to hit the string on its 1/2; anything close by will not produce a clear note.
So, the next tip (tip number 2) is to spend the needed time to find these precise spots on every string and then mark them!
To do that, use your index finger on the left hand and gently touch the string from the backside of your lyre, approximately where you think that the perfect spot is each time. Then, hit the string with the index finger of your right hand to produce a sound.
If the sound is not clear enough, move your left-hand index up and down on the string until the produced note is what you desire.
When you find the perfect spot, use a marker to make a visual sign. Then, move on to the next harmonic.
Don't forget to do that for every harmonic and for every string of your lyre. In the end, you will have something like this.
Now, it is much easier to produce a harmonic whenever you need it!
#3 Exercise Daily, as Much as you Can, to Strengthen your Muscle Memory
But even now that you have marked the perfect spots on your lyre, it is not easy to produce clear notes, clear harmonics, isn't it?

Thank you for the lesson! Another funny way I found during my experiments in order to determine the harmonics is, if the other strings is exactly tuned, to do the #2 operations and, in the same time, observe when the other string which shares the same sympathetic vibration frequency resonate through the instrument. For exemple, when I searched the fifth on the G string, the D string vibrates at the moment i found the spot.😁The B string vibrates when the third's point of the G string is touched and so on...
We can also do the opposite: you strum the D string while moving your finger on the G string until the latter starts to vibrate: the fifth's point is found! 🎶

Excellent lesson! I'm a harpist, but am going to acquire a lyre as another instrument. The lessons you teach work well not just for the lyre, but for the harp too.

Thanks for the comment, David, and glad to read that you are going to be a lyre player soon!
Just a friendly reminder; look for a proper premium instrument, one that will help you make the best out of your lyre journey that will soon began. :)
Lina is a much-beloved lyre tutor, and you can find her amazing work at the LyreAcademy.com! They will soon release their first masterclasses too, one of which will be focusing on the harmonics technique!

What is the technique of hitting the string?

    • @SEIKILO
      @SEIKILO  Месяц назад

The technique is called Harmonics and can unlock up to four notes per string on a lyre. You can find out more in this video: ruclips.net/video/yBbs9coxivA/видео.html (check Harmonics and Hroes techniques at 5:17 and 6:24, respectively)!

I have not been able to duplicate this on my dark Orpheus lyre from Luthieros. Do I have the wrong type of strings? Might the string length not be sufficient? I love your playing and lessons. I love my lyre, whether it can do this technique or not.

Thanks for the comment, Mary! Yes, it is absolutely feasible to play the harmonics on any LUTHIEROS lyre, no matter the length of the strings. Having a LUTHIEROS lyre means that you probably have sugar cane strings, or even better gut strings. Both of them are ideal for this technique.
Are you a student at LyreAcademy.com? If yes, there are many lessons focusing on this technique, and recently a masterclass was announced specially designed for the harmonics technique: lyreacademy.com/master-the-harmonics-masterclass-m03/
What's more, if you are a student at LyreAcademy.com, then you can ask directly Lina Palera on the academy's Private Students Group on Facebook. She offers personalized feedback on a weekly basis!

Is this only with certain lyres

    • @SEIKILO
      @SEIKILO  Год назад +1

Thanks for the comment, Daesean. :) Harmonics technique is a very gentle way to play with your lyre and can unlock the true potential of your instrument. It is far easier to play them if you are using a proper musical instrument with gut or sugarcane strings and with the same length of vibrating strings (i.e., the yoke and the bridge have to be parallel to each other).
