Regarding your question, 16 and 21 strings are too complicated for every beginner and even intermediate to advanced players. The simplicity of that instrument is what really differentiates it from the others. And its simplicity is the one that creates the right mindset for the new lyre players to learn and master new playing techniques to advance quite fast their lyre playing.
Anything from 7 to 13 strings is suited to beginners, but the most important is to choose a proper musical instrument from a reputable luthier, such as the LUTHIEROS family in Greece. It is crucial to choose a lyre that will help you enjoy your lyre journey, that will enhance your playing from the very beginning.
What's more, it is vital to choose a luthier with a great "customers' care" reputation, who will answer all your after-sales questions and help you get the most out of your lyre.
      We highly recommend luthieros.com/
They are great at guiding new lyre players to choose the perfect lyre for them, so don't hesitate to get in touch with Theodore at info@luthieros.com!
