First 2 runs this week in this shoe. It is an amazing ride. Not too soft - not too firm - just right with a rocker feel that makes a higher cadence easy on the legs.
This Hoka One One Mach 4 sounds great! Other online reviewers seem to agree that it's an exceptional and versatile shoe. Some comparisions that would be interesting include: Saucony Ride 13, Saucony Speed, Saucony Shift, and Hoka One One Clifton 6/7. For 2021, I agree with others that the next generation Saucony Ride 14, Speed 2, and Shift 2 are the most likely competitors, with the Asics Glideride 2 being another possibility. Thanks for all that you do!
after almost half a year of waiting for it to appear on sale, here in Serbia, Hoka Mach 4 has finally arrived. I bought it online, without trying it in the store, and based on several reviews, one is this one. one word: superb! the best running shoes!
QD: saucony. I love the endorphin pro. I think they will make some great improvements to the endorphin series. Also, just got the novablast for $99 at Dicks. Can’t wait to try it out!
Seth, just went to the store today to find a new running shoe....first time in a long time. Didn't see any shoe reviews. As soon as I tried on the Mach 4, I knew this was the one. Light, cushiony, responsive, stabile. Instant hit for me. Hoka did it right.
QD: I'm excited for the Asics Novablast 2 & Saucony Ride 14. Those shoes(if done right) are going to be something special. Thanks a lot to YT reviews! Shoe companies must find this resource to be a godsend as far as R&D goes.
Hey Seth, the Hoka Mach 4 is the first shoe I bought without checking your review first. That’s how perfect it felt as soon as I slipped it on. Needless to say, your review made me like them even more!
Just got my Hoka Mach 4's today. Woohoo! Butter my bread, we're off to see the wizard ;-) Did a 4.5 mile club run at 11min pace. Of course I am no test of the kind of speed the Mach 4 can deliver. My first impressions are this: This shoe is very comfortable on my feet. I had to buy a half size up. They deliver a soft landing and a smooth ride. I can see myself doing my 1st marathon in a Mach series shoe. However, for 10K on down, I will still pull out my Skecher Razor 3's. For half-marathon and above, the Mach has got it. Looking forward to your review of the Skechers GoRun ride 9 and the Max Road 5 is ready for release!!
QD: Seth makes s compelling case for the Mach 4, so I doubt anyone will exceed it, but if I had to guess, maybe ASICS. The Nimbus Lite 2 looks like a winner, and as a devotee of the Novablast, I’m looking forward to v2.
QD: I think Saucony if they incorporate the PWRun+ foam to the Endorphin line up. I was a longtime Pegasus guy, and this last year I became a Saucony Guy. The most comfortable and durable shoes I've ever owned.
Just ordered the last pair in UK 9 from the hoka website . These sold out like nothing Iv seen . Excited, done about 200 miles in the Clifton 7’s I’m new to all the running shoes world. I think these will be brilliant
@@Emeranux The Endorphin Speed is the best performance trainer I've ever run in. I just passed 400mi on my first pair and they still feel good. About to order another!
Thanks Seth, I put myself down for "All Notifications." I'm excited about your new Q & A on running shoes live stream and thank you for answering my question last show. I only recently got into the Hoka line with the Clifton 7. I think I want to get this puppy too! I'm on my way to my local shoe-dio!
For 2021, I am looking forward to Altra’s replacement for the Torin 4.0. Rumor has been that it will be renamed, so I’ll have to pay attention to “new” models from Altra.
First time I ever spent more than $70 on a running shoe- well worth the price of admission! I definitely stepped up my game. Everything seems just a little more effortless. Thank you Dr. Jerome Hoka and your team of Sneaker Scientists
QD: I've only ran in Nike, Adidas and New Balance recently so I might have a narrow sighted opinion. Amongst the 3, I'll say Nike. Adidas Lightstrike seems to firm for a daily trainer and boost is too heavy. New balance fuelcell is a great foam for speed work due to the energy return but not durable enough for a daily trainer. Nike React fits all the properties you would want in a daily trainer, durable, soft enough, not overly heavy. I'm definitely looking forward to a getting a 2nd pair of Peg 37 in 2021 at a discount.
Seth, a while ago you mentioned that you were going to do a marathon shoe matrix. I haven’t heard anything about it and I was wondering if you were still planning on doing one? That is the most anticipated vlog for me.
Digging this review, Seth! Now we have to wait for these 😢 have a great one! Super excited for: these now, Atreyu Artist, the next Novablast, 1080v11! It’s a great time to be alive and a runner!
QD: I am gonna go with Brooks and the second iteration of their Hyperion Tempo. Why? Because they just nailed the 2nd version of the Hyperion Elite and the Tempo was already a fantastic shoe in 2020.
My main problem with Endorphin Speed is they are ALWAYS out of stock here in Canada for my size... I tried its official website, our local running store and a few big Canadian Chains, no shoes. You'd think M size 9 is pretty common....
OMG!! Love this shoe..got x2 first, hated it...got these took em out and ran a live 5 miler..very responsive, locked in feel, love the toe splay and heel counter..everything is awesome..using these for my ultra training. My new fav Hoka! (Better than Rincon)
the mach 4 gives me real good mach 2 vibes. mach 3 was a complete bust and it’s getting hard to find mach 2’s in my size for a good price. really looking forward to the 4!!!
QD: Asics glideride 2, I love the glideride 1, it's my go to shoe for long and steady run. The only issues I had with the shoe was the weight that prevented it from being used at some faster tempos. But fro what I've read the glideride 2 is incorporating flytefoam into the midsole which in all probability will lead to less weight and more responsiveness with the same meta rocker tech.
Fantastic review!! I haven’t worn a Hoka for a while due to their bulky-ness, but after after seeing that score I just may have to head back over to them. Thanks Seth!
While I TOTALLY understand and respect your view for not having too much rubber on the sole, for us everyday peeps that have to go through 1... MAYBE 2 shoes per year, that bit of extra rubber far outweighs the importance of 50-100 grams.
Good Morning. It‘s funny That you’re saying That the Clinton Edge isn‘t so Good at all because i‘m thinking this Way too 😁 This is maybe the third of fourth Review to the hoka One One mach 4 and every person in the Videos are pure exitet about this Shoe. At this Moment i run the carbon x2 and when they are Done I think i will buy a pair of this 👌
Salomon Sonic 3 Balance! Love that shoe!! Mach 4 just in tha house. Have to try them before I have an opinion. Can’t wait to hit the roads with the Hoka’s!!
The Mach 4 is going to be smooooooth... and also smother then the Rincon. The Profly midsole material hast improved and in super bouncy. The Rincon therefore is a little lighter, a little stiffer but a little less durable. Also the Rocker Shape of the Rincon is a littler more aggressive which makes the Rincon still super fast and fun to run, but gives the Mach 4 in comparison a littler more rolling kind of feeling. So the longer the distance to run, the stronger the Mach 4 gets. It kind of fells like the CarbonX2 without carbon plate, in caseyou had the chance to already try that one?! :)
I watched the video you did getting your gait analysis done and buying some Brooks Ravenna’s yesterday. Given that the Mach 4 are not a stability shoe you obviously got on fine with them despite needing a support shoe.
**I've been running for about 6 months now and have been running in a simple Asics Gel and was pleased but wanted to up my game and bought the Cliftons and quickly returned them, too clunky so I got the mach 4 which allot of people love but I feel like I'm running in soft sand I guess im used to the firmer sole I'm hoping I can get used to the ride bcause I really want to enjoy this sneaker.
Hi Seth, great Vlog mate! Hoka will/ have produced the best daily trainer of 2021 in the Mach 4 or it will be the Rincon 4. I can’t see anyone else getting close. I think INOV-8 will take the honours in the trail category
I'd say that the only draw back is actually the offset. 5mm drop is a no no for me. Otherwise these could be my first Hoka shoes. QOD: maybe Novablast 2 will break that 9/10 score.
I feel like hoka will release them a lot sooner. Brands don’t usually let you review shoes unless it’s about 2-3 months at max for release date. So hopefully we get them sooner! Everyone reviewer Had absolutely loved these. Looking forward to the Mach 4.
I wish Hoka had made the modifications in weight and midsole performance but kept the more traditional lines of v.3 (without the elf heel and that rear sole extension) because the Mach 3 looked beautiful--including the upper fabric, though the new fabric is evidently more breathable and maybe contributes to the better fit and lighter weight.
I'm an Adidas fan. My foot is narrow and they fit right. I have the Boston series, SL, ultraboost, and Prime. Just picked up the Adizero Pro...waiting for races to come back to try these out.
QD: Nike Pegasus 38. The 37 was a lot of steps (pun intended) in the right direction. I expect them to fully nail the 38. Hopefully they can bring the weight down slightly, and widen the toe box just a bit. (I personally prefer a bit tighter shoe..the peg 37 is a great fit for me already but I read a lot of comments from people saying it is tight on them) The react foam is here to stay. I don’t see that changing. Traction is great on the 37. We may see some stack height shed as it didn’t seem to help much in the 37 and only added more weight. The 10mm drop will stay. As much as I would prefer it to be in the 5-8mm range, Nike keeps their daily trainers at 10mm. The zoom air bags will probably stay. I really liked them initially but can go either way now. After about 50 miles mine started to squeak (in a few different pairs). I have the alphafly and vaporfly and after months of testing I would go with vaporfly, which has no air bags. Lastly, we may see some sort of plate in the peg 38. Not carbon. Probably composite, maybe a half plate? I don’t think it needs it but I see Nike doing everything they can to make this the #1 runners daily trainer after letting the vomero line die a slow and tragic death.
Butter my bread, we're off to see the wizard!!! Just finished a 4.5 miler in my Skechers (GoRun (no ride) 7+'s and feeling the afterglow.(Try some Skechers in your rotation guys) :-) Went down to the local shoe-dio and tried on a pair of Mach 4's Woohoo! There size 10, my usual, was a little to snug. I find most times I take a 10, but sometimes 10.5. Perhaps the toe box had me want a half size up. Oh, the current manufacturing run has shortened the laces, they much have heard you Seth. The laces were not too long. I have now become a Skechers/Hoka man.
Hoka Mach 4 = winner winner chicken dinner! Good lawd, this shoe is stellar. I swore off Hoka bc they were so chunky and maximalist. These are so comfy. Running in the Mach 4 for 5+ miles have been insanely enjoyable 🥰
I thought of a question for you whilst watching the vlog from a couple of days back regarding the evolution of shoe series. My favourite shoe yet is the Hoka EVO Speedgoat. In love with the bounce. Do you know of any ROAD shoe that has a similar feeling to it? Thanks for continuously pushing out awesome videos. SB WH LEO
I was thinking maybe the Hoka, Nike, or Saucony because all of those companies seem to be heading in the right direction with the build I think. But then again, I am kind of new to running so I am not way too sure. I am so excited to try out the MACHS!!!!!
Wow! Great win for the Hoka Mach4... Big question though is if the midsole bottoms-out early (like Rincon?)...QOD: Hoka for now... BUT Asics might come from behind fior the win with Nimbus lite 2 OR a Novablast 2 (lite?).
Seeeeeeeeeeth! 😊 great video! I just ordered the Mach 4 and they're just delivered. BUT: too small / too narrow. So sad (for me). What do you think about a new Matrix-Video like "Race Day Shoe For Wider Feet Matrix" ...That would be awesome! Keep on rockin' and runningg!
Versatility and weight reasons this puts the Hoka Mach 4 up with the Saucony endorphin speed as number one for daily and speed shoe. Two essential go to shoes! 👍🏻👏🏼👏🏼
QD: So many! Never count out the Swoosh (Nike) with some update perhaps of the Pegasus Turbo...or Maybe Adidas will make a SL 21 in honor of the revised date of the Tokyo Olympics. 👍👍
Great review Seth! Sooo on the fence with this one, im waiting for the NB rebel 2 to compare before purchase but as the review went on i was really hating on the colourway! Good reason to wait. They always release more colours down the track, maybe in time for rebel 2 release. 1 question por favor? 1. Rebel 2 - will you be reviewing this shoe? And not a question really but Ive been a subscriber for about 2 years now and whats more inspiring than your reviews is to see how naturally kind and inclusive you are with others when you are out and about doing your race footage etc. You inspire me to be more like that too🙏
Brooks. I feel with the Hyperion Tempo and Hyperion Elite 2, Brooks is knocking on the door. I'd like to see a Ghost Racer be introduced ( a racing mate to the Ghost Trainer). Brooks.
I’m gonna say Hoka, I’m new to the brand having always favoured Inov8 for trails and Brooks for road however......ATR5’s seem to tick most boxes for me.....love em!
My 2021 shoe cycle has been looking like this so far: I have a pair of these, one pair of brooks glycerine 19 and old epic react 2 shoes which I bougt from the Nike website when they were briefly available again in March an last but not least Brooks Hyperion Elite 2 - my first ever carbon plated shoes. Since these were the only shoes I bought this year these are the only ones I can really talk about. I've worn like 10 other shoes on treadmills or some 50-100 meters outside a store. If I had to pick my "favorite running shoe of 2021" I guess it'd be these, closely followed by the epic react 2 (I know a 2019 shoe, but it's still way better than its slow and heavy follow ups, infinity 1 and 2). The Glycerines are of course very comfortable and will get you home on every recovery run still allowing you to pick up the pace if you want to but they're just a bit less fun to run in compared to the epic react 2 which are - to mind - phenomenal yet not quite as fast as the Hoka Mach IV. There are of course some Sauconys, some Asics and other shoes by Brooks which I didn't buy because I didn't like them enough on the treadmill. And there are shoes I didn't even try in the first place, so that's even unfairer but hey - you've asked ;-) Oh and of course there are teh Hyperion Elite 2 which I used for my first ever sub 1:40 HM...I guess they are great shoes but since I've only ever worn them when I tried to run as fast as I physically can, I didn't have much time to think about the shoes I wore....
I decided that I wasn't a fan of Hoka then you built me put for this one and let me down with the release date 🤣. Well played sir...well played!!! QD: I am hooked on Nike!
The Mach is gotta last you a lot longer and has a more structured heel counter. The rincon is great for workout days but I wouldn’t use them as a daily trainer just because they’ll last you about only 115 miles. Vs the Mach you’ll get a lot more off but obviously means the Mach is gonna be a lot heavier
Recommendation?????? Hello Seth and friends, in search of more shock absorption, I tried on a pair of Hoka Speedgoat 4's, they were too squishy for me.....what would be a max shoe that is a tad less squishy but still offers rock protection and decent shock absorption. Currently i am on the other end of the scale with a 2year old pair of Altra Lone Peak 3.0s (stack ht of 25mm but feel like barefoot at times) which can feel a toothpick if you ran over one. I need some bounce, shock absorption, rock protection.......you get the idea. thanks in advance.
Sketchers...because I love an underdawg! To come up with some surprise. Hoka Mach 4...not sure that heel needs such a flair....maybe could have been a Kkosh lighter..
What are your thoughts on this for winter roads/sidewalks? My Rincon 2's tend to be a bit sketchy if there is any moisture on the ground, especially cold moisture, and I would love to replace them soon! Thanks!
Hi Seth, These shoes look A LOT like the Carbon x2... I would describe Carbon x2 as a Mach 4 with a carbon plate (maybe this justifies the increased weight of the Carbon x2). Watching the review of the Carbon x2 you weren't that excited as you are here and the grade that you gave for carbon x2 was a bit disappointing compared to Mach 4. Can you elaborate s bit on that? What differences do you observe between these two shoes? Maybe a comparison would worth....🙂 Keep up the great work
Should I pick these up or the saucony endorphin speed? It will be my 2nd pair of running shoes I've ever bought and I run lightly, just getting into it.
Thanks for all of your hard work and passion for creating this content. You mention that this shoe would not be as great for slower pace/ easy days. What are some present day options you would suggest for this? Or key things I should look for? Thanks!
QOD: Asics Evoride 2 may not be as cushioned, but it shed some weight closing in to 8oz, so it may be a contender. In terms of overall package, I enjoyed the skechers razor 3 so much, so rather hyped up with the razor 3+ if they really are designed more for daily trainer now.
Great shoes. Awesome cushioning. Only question is if the fit is right for your foot shape. Two small complaints I have on mine is the questionable forefoot outsole durability and the toe box being a tad narrow.
I've got quite narrow feet and never had a pair of shoes fit as well as my Hola Clifton 6's. So concur with the above. Try a wide if that's likely to be a problem for you. Love that shoe so much, will definitely get the Mach 4 in march!
QD: I think Hoka are doing great things but I’ve only used the rincon 2 which I find to be a little snug so that put me off moving for another pair. I’m going with Saucony endorphin speed, amazing ride and lm looking forward to see what the do with the endorphin lineup in 2021
QD: I’m going with Nike and Tempo Next% 2 or whatever they call it. I love the current version and know that it’s been a very marmite shoe. I think with a couple of tweaks it could be amazing. Admittedly my shoe experience is way smaller than yours but the current Tempo Next% just made me feel great when running and any improvements would be amazing.
Hey Seth. Where does the Mach 4 sit with relation to the rincon or the clifton? Is it softer/more responsive/more supportive/lighter? Thanks for the good work
First 2 runs this week in this shoe. It is an amazing ride. Not too soft - not too firm - just right with a rocker feel that makes a higher cadence easy on the legs.

I'd say that the only draw back is actually the offset. 5mm drop is a no no for me. Otherwise these could be my first Hoka shoes. QOD: maybe Novablast 2 will break that 9/10 score.
Too much drop or too little?
How was the 3 landing for you? :shoe:
I'm an Adidas fan. My foot is narrow and they fit right. I have the Boston series, SL, ultraboost, and Prime. Just picked up the Adizero Pro...waiting for races to come back to try these out.
Great video Seth - does this shoe make the Rincon defunct? Keep up the good work
Nike pegasus 38
QD: Nike Pegasus 38.
The 37 was a lot of steps (pun intended) in the right direction. I expect them to fully nail the 38. Hopefully they can bring the weight down slightly, and widen the toe box just a bit. (I personally prefer a bit tighter shoe..the peg 37 is a great fit for me already but I read a lot of comments from people saying it is tight on them)
The react foam is here to stay.
Awesome Raymond, enjoy the ride!
Hoka Mach 4 = winner winner chicken dinner! Good lawd, this shoe is stellar. I swore off Hoka bc they were so chunky and maximalist. These are so comfy. Running in the Mach 4 for 5+ miles have been insanely enjoyable 🥰
Qd: Asics....they've been amazing. Either Novablast iteration or Glideride.
SB WH LEO
Glad you mentioned the toe box. I really don't like a tight toe box area.
Brooks.
:shoe: great choices!
QD: The best daily trainer for me in 2021 will be Mizuno Wave Rider 24 Neo (not bought yet).
I’m gonna say Hoka, I’m new to the brand having always favoured Inov8 for trails and Brooks for road however......ATR5’s seem to tick most boxes for me.....love em!
My 2021 shoe cycle has been looking like this so far:
I have a pair of these, one pair of brooks glycerine 19 and old epic react 2 shoes which I bougt from the Nike website when they were briefly available again in March an last but not least Brooks Hyperion Elite 2 - my first ever carbon plated shoes.
I can’t wait to pick up this shoe in 2021! March seems too far away 😭
to watch this 3 month ago and the wait is almost over, finally
I’m curious to see a comparison between this and the Rincon. They seem like very similar shoes, with a lightweight, exposed EVA midsole
Rincon is too narrow and doesn't come in a wide. I was disappointed with the Rincon - I prefer the Mach .. the un-Hoka Hoka
@@Carlosediaz543 the Rincon lasted me like 300 miles and I’ve heard the Mach lasts about the same, because it’s the same exposed midsole
Christian, Mach will be more responsive, I'll do a comparison soon! :Shoe:
still watching. about to buy now.
2 & 3 were horrible! Finally we get a good looking Mach!! Excited to get these
Hey Seth, would you say this shoe is as wide or wider in the toe box than the Rincon, Elevon, or Clifton?
Hoka One One Clifton 8!? I’ve started running with Hoka’s this year and loved it. Running with Clifton 7 and Rincon 2s
That midsole kinda looks like butter! Maybe that’s why it’s such a great shoe
Butter Butter Butter!
I'm getting all your notifications 👍🏾🙌🏾
Can’t wait for this Mach 4 I have my money set aside now - just waiting
You won’t be disappointed
Hoka makes a darn good shoe. Great review!
Thanks for watching!
What are your thoughts on this for winter roads/sidewalks?
My Rincon 2's tend to be a bit sketchy if there is any moisture on the ground, especially cold moisture, and I would love to replace them soon!
Thanks!
How does the ride compare to the Rincon 2? I guess better energy return?
Exactly, more responsive and smoother transition.
Hi Seth,
These shoes look A LOT like the Carbon x2... Maybe a comparison would worth....🙂
Keep up the great work
Should I pick these up or the saucony endorphin speed? It will be my 2nd pair of running shoes I've ever bought and I run lightly, just getting into it.
QOD: saucony in 2021 especially endorphin speed 2!
Woot woot! :shoe:
I have had 2 pairs of Rincon and loved them, but the rubber wore away too quick. Are these similar to Rincon but better sole?
Thanks for all of your hard work and passion for creating this content.
You mention that this shoe would not be as great for slower pace/ easy days. What are some present day options you would suggest for this? Or key things I should look for?
Thanks!
QD: I think the nike pegasus line up will because the peg 37 is already an amazing shoe, but the 38 i think will capitalize a lot.
I’m going to bet that the next iteration of the Skechers Razor will be amazing.
Tempted to give Hoka a shot
Great shoes. Awesome cushioning. Only question is if the fit is right for your foot shape. Two small complaints I have on mine is the questionable forefoot outsole durability and the toe box being a tad narrow.
I've got quite narrow feet and never had a pair of shoes fit as well as my Hola Clifton 6's. So concur with the above. Try a wide if that's likely to be a problem for you. Love that shoe so much, will definitely get the Mach 4 in march!
A narrow fit is more than fine, thanks folks. Definitely looking forward to giving them a try.
QD: I think Hoka are doing great things but I’ve only used the rincon 2 which I find to be a little snug so that put me off moving for another pair. I’m going with Saucony endorphin speed, amazing ride and lm looking forward to see what the do with the endorphin lineup in 2021
Was the speed true to size? Thank you in advance!
hustle3011 yes perfect 👌🏻
Thanks for sharing!
Got me all hyped up for theses hokas and now I have to wait until March 2021. Not fare🤣 but loving my Saucony speeds.
How do you compare this to the Rincon? Which do you see as the better all rounder or long run shoe?
QD: I’m going with Nike and Tempo Next% 2 or whatever they call it. I love the current version and know that it’s been a very marmite shoe. I think with a couple of tweaks it could be amazing. Admittedly my shoe experience is way smaller than yours but the current Tempo Next% just made me feel great when running and any improvements would be amazing.
Hey Seth. Where does the Mach 4 sit with relation to the rincon or the clifton? Is it softer/more responsive/more supportive/lighter?
Thanks for the good work
More responsive than both and not quite as softer as either. Thanks for watching!
@@SethJamesDeMoor thanks! Good to know planning for 2021
Hoka upping their game big time with that shoe.
Just bought a pair and I think they Re better than my hoka carbon x. These shoes are ligh ad comfy AF
