Ragnar is (once again) the best example of this; he outright said he didn't believe in Valhalla or the gods the very day he died, and that his dying speech was just a ruse... YET we all want to believe he is in Valhalla and held on to that possibility of a scene with all the past characters feasting together. That's how well this show works in that regard.

Hvitserk like his dad was always fascinated by different religions. In s5 he was obsessed with Buddhism, he like Ragnar just wanted to have a simple life. Now he got that with Alfred but also his last ever close up shot is him slowly smiling as we hear fire burning and sounds of battle. So inside he will always be viking. I also think ivar’s death was perfect because his last act was a act love while his entire family including him continued the cycle revenge and violence. He chose to give it all up and save his brother’s life and die as the last true Viking. Him being killed by a random soldier was perfect for me because it showed that his legacy was bigger than anyone. If Alfred had killed him that would’ve made his legacy that he was killed by a great Christian king. It would’ve ruined his story imo. To the saxons and norse ivar the boneless was a feared most famous viking who died screaming and laughing but only hvitserk knows the truth that he died scared and full of love for his brother.

Alex who plays Ivar said that he loved being killed by a “nobody”. Ivar was going to die, he didn’t need or deserve an epic end like Ragnar or Bjorn. He died in battle which is what he wanted, was loved by his brother who he saved in battle and was going to die regardless because his bones were breaking. Ivar stuck to the old ways and ultimately died for it. Both Ubbe and Hvitserk embraced the new ways and survived, Hvitserk becoming a Christian, starting a new life and Ubbe settling in a new land. Loved where all three characters ended up in my opinion.

The ending was never going to be a big epic all out bang to the story. It is actually much more deeper than you think. Ubbe set out to achieve Ragnar's original dream, whilst all of his other sons were continuing the Viking ways. Ragnar's whole dream was to find new lands with interesting new things, gods, and people, to settle down and farm there, not to forever be at war as his other sons did. Ubbe achieved this, and Floki also came to realize the wonders of the new world they discovered. This is why when Ubbe asks Floki if the Gods were there, he told him not to bother. Floki had his own faith and old ways of the Vikings shaken after finding the cross in Iceland. This was a sign the time of the Vikings was starting to come to an end as Gunhild later says. Ubbe keeps asking Floki questions about what has happened but Floki tells him to let the past go. Floki has chosen to let go of the old Viking ways and live in the moment because he saw the destruction the old ways brought in Iceland, and this is what he encourages Ubbe to do. Torvi also echoes this point later, as they have found themselves this new world, on the boat she says there is no point in going there if they behave the same as they once did.
I love Vikings with all my heart, no show has ever cared as deeply for its characters. Whilst other shows are afraid of emotion, Vikings goes all in and allows its audience to feel their emotions. Nothing is perfect obviously, but Vikings comes close.

I found this interesting theory mentioned by someone...
"There is a theory that Othere is
    Hvitserk. They are both monks
who lived in England and are called Athelstan. We see that they both have scars on their backs from burns (when Bjorn burned Hvitserk alive). This is because Hvitserk slept with a goddess who appeared in the last chapters of this season that (I forget her name) and she rewarded him with some powers like time travel. So Hvitserk decided to go to the time and place where Ubbe was. Another proof of this is that
when in Iceland they learn of Bjorn's death, the camera focuses on Othere who is sad. Why would the director have wanted to do something as irrelevant as this? because he wants us to know that Othere is Hvitserk. When fighting for the whale in Greenland, Othere has a very similar fighting style to Hvitserk. And at all times we realize how Othere cares a lot about Ubbe and always tries to be by his side. Why would he care so much about a random man he had just met? because he is his brother.

Enjoy Valhalla. My king, my heart, my love 💙IVAR THE BONELESS💙. Such a badass yet again this episode. Broke my heart into pieces when he died, I cried so hard I couldnt see, love that his 2nd father Floki, felt his death. I cried even harder when my baby finally dropped his facade and admitted he was scared, most likely scared that he still wouldn't be accepted into Valhalla since hes a cripple.
Ivar has always been a lonely sad little boy deep down, just desperate for love from his family and to be seen as an equal. Had crows and someone feeling Ivars death so makes me realise even more that Ragnar and Ivar were truly special to the gods more than the others, Plus how Odin only spoke to Ivar, and rallied the sons of Ragnars death. Even Harbourt visited Ivar and took some of his pain on himself and gave him gifts. Nobody will ever forget Ivar and hes the only viking i heard of and learned about growing up lol. Alex has been outstanding in this show, this was his show after Travis left, has been carrying it since then and always knew that they couldnt kill him and still have a show without him, so makes sense that they killed him last episode.
I knew all along that Ivar could never kill Hvitserk, so happy they finally admitted their love for one another, Hvitserk was always meant to be with Ivar and Ivar was meant to save him and show everyone how much of a legend he is. I think they never showed us Valhalla and everyone reuniting so we could imagine it ourselves and how we see it exactly. Floki felt his adopted son Ivars death and will soon join him & Ragnar in Valhalla soon by the sounds of it (Floki telling Ubbe hes gonna die soon)
I hated and felt cheated when some scared boy killed Ivar but after awhile I realised, Ivar chose to let him kill him, Ivar could have killed that boy 3 times in the time he had before he got stabbed. Also think its amazing how again Ivar was like his father Ragnar, Kinda choosing his death and owning his fate also the parallels of both Ivar and Ragnar saying "Dont be afraid" to the people who they gave permission to kill them or send them to his death. Ragnar said it to Ecbert in 4x14 and Ivar said it in this episode. Ivar is definitely in Valhalla, I heard the ravens as soon as he died, plus Floki felt it, and Ivar is legendary just like his father. Wish we could have seen Ivar son once or that Ivar could have once at least, glad that he gets to grow up with Igor around, who adored and love his father.
I'm sure Katia did too but she held back and didnt let herself fall too hard since she realised Ivars in love with Freydis still not her.

It wasn’t the perfect ending, but I still really enjoyed it. One of the main storylines throughout Vikings was brother against brother, and it ended with a brother dying for a brother. I loved Ubbe’s and Ivar’s storylines. The Kattegat storyline was the only thing that I didn’t care for. I was really hoping for a final Valhalla scene with Ragnar, Lagertha, Bjorn, Ivar, Harald, and a few others, but it’s still a possibility that they’ll show something like that in the upcoming Vikings: Valhalla sequel series. Just happy that they didn’t pull a GOT Season 8. The final season did have some flaws, but it was still very enjoyable for the most part. The final shot with Ubbe and Floki was great IMO. Ubbe was basically a Ragnar Jr., so the final shot with Ragnar Jr. and Ragnar’s best friend was definitely a nice touch.

Seer tolds Ivar that no matter where he hide, his fate will find him, that means ofc that his bone ill one day will kill him. And Ivar deciade not to hide, or run away and face his fate. That was 1st time that seer was wrong. Thats why I think that was g8 end for him, and somehow shows he was not ordinary man or ruler.

As a native Norwegian who has read the old "saga" (histories) quite a few times, the ending makes some sense. Queen Ingrid (Gunhild is her historical name) will probably become the wife of Eirik Bloodaxe, one of Harald Fairhair's sons. Eirik bloodaxe fails as a king in Norway but becomes king in Northumbria. His kingdom in Norway is taken over by Håkon the good who is also a son of Harald Fairhair but raised in England by a king or nobleman called Athelstan - the new name given to Hvitserk. Eirik is killed in England. Ingrid marries the Danish king and manipulates her and Eiriks sons to wage war against Håkon. Ingrid is described in the saga as spiteful, powerhungry, manipulative and with much knowledge of sorcery. She outlives every one of her husbands, lovers, sons and enemies and even ends up as the lover of the next defacto ruler of Norway, earl Håkon. In other words, there is no shortage of drama and intrigues in the real history of the vikings so maybe they will make a new season. Oh, and the fight between the new and the old gods continues way beyond earl Håkon.

I would say that the season overall was not as good as before. But It did pretty well for what it's worth. I find the ending very poetic in a way. Floki and Ubbe sitting in a far distant land, away from the chaos of the viking life and war... Finally at peace...

Now bu doing this he could be the reason why, Christianity is still here today, maybe he is part of the reason by being the new "bishop Heahmund" if you will. An incredible warrior. PLUS to be honest I think Bjorns death episode was the true finale. The rest of the episodes were to me bonuses. I think nobody will ever be happy with the ending of a long running show. Its hard to tie up lines for everyone so cleanly. Everyone will always have their own opinions on how something SHOULD have gone but this is how they chose to do it.

Ivar is a master tactician and plays his battles out in his mind like in a game of chess.
I love the scene where he guides the attacks of his soldiers like some sort of puppet-master.
In chess, the most important chess piece is the king. When the king gets captured or cornered, the battle is lost. For Ivar. the king was Hvitserk because his brothers would always help him when his eyes turned blue an say: "Not today Ivar". Because he would be in great danger to break his bones.
He knew if Hvistserk would fall in battle, there would be nobody able to rescue him.

Now that the series is over, there are things they obviously had in mind, but didn't feel like they capitalized fully on it through the series. Although, I think they did a way better job on the theme of the show in making their points at the end over a show like Game of Thrones. There are still things that looking back on, bothered me. Such as the rivalry between Alfred and Ivar. They built up the idea that these two would have calculated warfare between each other during season 4. And that Alfred was the only one who could save them from the Vikings in the future, back when he was just a kid. But it was really just two fights, with Alfred's faith being more focused than his wit.
I thought that during the York battle storyline in early season 5, they should have made Aethewulf's attack fail, Edmund's attack fail, and then have Alfred have an idea on tricking Ivar and succeeding. Then later have Ivar sail with Herald when they attacked Wessex in season 5, and have Alfred and Ubbe's tactics be what manages to defeat them. Forcing Ivar to retreat, causing Bjorn to decide now's the best time to take back Kattegat. and then this year, with Ivar's massive army, have him maybe even win the first time, but then have Alfred's negotiation tactics mange for him to get others to joining and saving him, making him outwit Ivar one final time, being Ivar's ultimate foe.
Another thing, when watching your reaction, made me realize, that they could have gone deeper in Hvitserk's doubts in religions. From Viking to Muslim to Buda to Christianity. Keep him questioning what truly is power and strength in faith, maybe.
Anyways, I thought the episode when Ivar and Hvitserk return is my favorite. Such powerful scenes. And Bjorn had one of the most epic death's in TV, to me. So this season wasn't their best, but didn't disappoint like other shows in the landing. One thing I remind myself about when it feels off when seasons change, the show only has one main writer, the creator. So it's more his vision of what type of story he wanted to tell, with obvious moments of dropped ideas, like Floki becoming the next Seer. Glad you enjoyed the final season!

It binds the story of Ragnar and his sons together with the known histories of Alfred, "Vinland," etc. Rollo couldn't really be shown because his story is so rooted in history that it would be difficult to show him. I think we go into finales with so much hope & expectation, it can’t live up to what we imagine, so I highly recommend giving it another viewing so it can all settle in... I did hope for/expect some kind of shot of maybe Lagertha & Ragnar etc. in Valhalla, maybe right at the end, or like Ragnar’s spirit talking to his sons... While I admit that it's rushed a bit, I think the point of the episode was to show that not every story has to be tied in a bow. When Ubbe tells Floki he has so many questions. And Floki says "Let the past go", he's not just talking to Ubbe, he's talking to Us the audience. it's basically the showwriters telling us that they are purposely leaving things open ended because the rest is history. Nothing left to say, nothing left to do. Sure there are some things left unknown, but that's the point. Because on life we don't always know everything
Anyways, I hope The Last Kingdom is your next show. Waiting for the Valhalla spin-off is going to drive me crazy lol, so until then TLK pwweease 💕

Larissa, you mentioned you're a bit confused, that is mainly because the writers took so many liberties with actual historical events, including mixed up chronology, inventing fictional places like Kattegat, and creating downright lies about historical events.
King Alfred wasn't chosen over his brother to become king, he actually got the throne in the right order, after 3 older brother had died before him.
The character of Ragnar Lodbrok is not 100% historically proven to have ever existed, although Ubbe, Rollo, and Ivar indeed did exist.
Ubbe died in England just before that last battle of Eddington, so he never actually went to the New World (North America).
Ivar the Boneless also had already died in Ireland, about a decade earlier that that final battle.
Conversion to Christianity is one of the more accurate accounts of that era, in fact many Norse and Viking kings had already converted by the time of the battle of Eddington, that usually meant that their subjects (people) had to convert also.
Rollo's descendants and the Norse residents of Normandy, France, now fully converted after 150 years or so, made the bulk of the army that marched into England in 1066, and at the battle of Hastings destroyed the Vikings' presence and culture in England for good and forever (that will be the logical final battle of the upcoming Vikings Valhalla series, since they mentioned the inclusion of William the Conqueror character).
The Vikings, just like the Mongols in Asia, appeared and disappeared in a relatively short period of time (by historical standards), for they both focused of pillaging and violence, so basically they were illiterate violent thieves who killed thousands upon thousands of people who didn't even know of their existence. They were finally defeated because the rest of Europe adjusted to their ways and ultimately overcame them by brute force, but also by culture. All the best to you

Anyway he will be known and remembered, the show made Hvitserk say those words and Alfred stopped the battle to pay respect to a viking. This part was amazing, Ivar deserved some epic ending. I also enjoyed the scene where Floki feels the death of Ivar, once again we see how much Floki loved Ivar but also how the gods sent him the message of Ivar's death.

He was taken and then thrown into a dungeon where, it was said, from the Anglo-Saxons Chronicals and the Icelandic Sagas of the 12 century, that vipers were kept ! Yet, England is not known for its venomous vipers !?!?
