How Fast is the Ecoboost Mustang 2.3L Premium [310HP] | Acceleration Test Review

  • In 2018, Ford refreshed the V8 powered GT and bumped the power to 460HP. But for the 4-cylinder Ecoboost model, they kept the horsepower the same and increased the torque to 350 lb-ft. They also added an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission. On paper, a 2.3L Ecoboost Mustang should be in the same league as some other economy sports cars. Let’s find out.
    All test runs were performed on 93 octane.

    Finally got the chance to rent a 2019 ecoboost from enterprise, absolutely loved it.
    I was shocked how loud the turbos are, especially in sport mode. The torque is pretty wild for a little 4 cylinder, will startle most people who aren’t used to driving fast cars. The gas peddle was way to sensitive imo, I put my big toe down a little bit and I’m already at 48 mph.
    This car is pretty fun as hell

    I've been working at Ford for years. I know a lot about these EcoBoost mustangs. I thought the same thing as you, I didn't think they were fast. But then we had one come in with a manual transmission and a higher gear ratio. I took that thing for a rip and I kid you not. It felt as fast as a new 5.0, no lie. I was very impressed. And also I myself have a 89 5.0 mustang and this EcoBoost 4cyl was way faster. I am pissed off that a 4 cyl is faster than my v8 mustang.

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  5 лет назад +2

      Oh yeah, they've come a long way from being considered "your sister's" Mustang. I honestly think they are faster than the S197 Mustangs with the 4.6L V8. I'm also mildly impressed with the 10 speed gearbox, it's pretty soulless, but it bangs those shifts out pretty quick for an entry level Mustang.

    I think the coupe (180 lbs. lighter than this vert) with a manual transmission, 93 gas and a tune would be a great cheap sports car. I'm older and have the money for fancier cars but am seriously considering one of these refreshed 18-19 ecoboosts. Unless I am going to take it to the track a lot (doubtful), I'd rather have a lighter and cheaper car than the GT which also has decent amount of torque. It would be great fun to drive.

    With a few mods the ecoboost mustang will gain a lot of horsepower and torque. I had a 2016 automatic ecoboost mustang. I installed a mishimoto catted downpipe, jlt cold air intake, turbosmart 10 pound wastegate actuator, Wagner intercooler, and got a dyno tune. It put out 325 horsepower to the wheels and over 400 ft pd of torque. I would cruise at 70 mph and floor the gas pedal. It would hit 120 very quickly and it would have gone lot faster. I could really feel the torque.

    Do you have any plans on going up to Phase 3 or 4 on your Spider with the turbo upgrade?

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  5 лет назад

      Hah! I'm not sure if I did that for dramatic effect or if it was actually the 350 lb-ft of torque that sent me back in my seat. In either case, I am also glad to know that if I run into one of these budget Mustangs with my 124, I can keep up or out run them in a straight line as well as mutilating them in corners. But tuned, yes that is a different animal completely at that point.
      I'm pretty happy with Phase 2, but I am honestly starting to consider Phase 3. I wish EC would sponsor that project though, then I would definitely do it LOL. And what is this Phase 4? I haven't even heard of it.

      Track Day TV MOS DEF! Get that sponsorship! They’d be lucky to have you.
      Phase 4 = water/meth injectors + Bigger turbo and some other things.
      But first I’d talk to Brett from Tork to see if they’d consider sponsoring you, remember that Tork Stage 1 is as fast if not faster than EC Phase 2 according to independent dyno results. So Tork Stage 2 with the bigger turbo and more aggressive tune might be pretty awesome. Check both options :)

      Hm, that's weird. I thought that the video showed me going WOT starting from around 20-30MPH in both runs. In either case, despite what the video may show, I always start test runs about 10MPH before the test range so that there is no human "launch" error on going WOT at the start speed. Basically, I use two different GPS timing devices, Racelogic VBOX and a Dragy, to get two sets of times to cross-verify each other. They collect the data from the set ranges that I input (40 to 100MPH in this case) and then I proceed to gather local density altitude data during the run because that is important to correct for DA to equalize the times to sea level for all the cars.
      Your question is very valid though, and I do have some curious viewers that want to know exactly how my tests are done. I'm working on that video as we speak. Hope this helps explain some and let me know if there's anything you want me to further clarify in the "Testing Explained" video.

    • @AviationDirection
      @AviationDirection 5 лет назад +1

      @@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy Thanks for the explanation. I look forward to your video talking about the tests. Maybe what I saw here was WOT on only one of the tests prior to 40 MPH vs all of them.
      I only brought up the question on this video as I feel like it was different compared to your other videos where all the tests "seemed" to start WOT at 40 MPH. However, if I'm wrong I'm sure it will be explained in your video.
      No worries...thanks for the response and I look forward to the next video!

      Anytime, I always like to answer questions make sure these kind of concerns are clear. The video portion is for viewer entertainment and may just be edited to show the 40-100 range. But either way, I want to become a credible source of information on this topic so I'm trying to make sure all test runs are as scientific as possible. 👍🏻

      @@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy the 110 was actually a typo that should read @100MPH. as far as 1/8th mile times I got those from in car telemetry on test drives. You noted that this was a convertible. The review you're referring to is for the ecoboost premium as well. ecoboost premium can be purchased with a performance package that has a shorter gear ratio, comes without a spare and jack (50lbs),& 255's (instead of the 235's). You chose the heaviest version of the car @ 250lbs heavier (the review chose the 2nd at 50lbs heavier), in both cases the 2nd best ratio was chosen, both had all season radials (not the available summer tire) & neither had the available 255's. When you add all of that to very late shifting the test is just inaccurate by 10+% with this version of the car. It would be even better with the cheapest stock option available. let's be honest here how many cars on that list were tested with all seasons, with their more fuel efficient available ratio, & shifted out of the power band?

    • @Bobbrians
      @Bobbrians 5 лет назад +1

      If the car recently had 87 octane in it the octane adjust ratio (OAR) would not be at the -1 needed for the PCM to allow full power which would likely be the case if the car was rented, these cars typically dyno 230hp/290tq at the wheels on 87 octane but can do 270hp and 330+tq at the wheels on 93..
      Also the factory intercooler is too small and too restrictive, if the charge air temp hits 150f (and it does quite easily) the PCM will pull considerable power out of the top end.
      Put an aftermarket intercooler on the car and give it a couple days with 93 in the tank for the octane adjust ratio to settle and the performance will improve drastically, cutting the factory mufflers off and replacing them with some Magnaflows can increase its character quite a bit as well.
      OAR explained

      I honestly think a Toyota 86 may be a tad slower in the 40-100. Even if the power the weight ratio is comparable, the lack of HP will start to have more of a diminishing effect on the acceleration towards the top end. I would like to get my hands on one though. I know a few that run at my local track.
