  • We're taught to think that 'bias' is automatically a bad thing, but everything depends on what sort of bias it is. There might be bias towards wisdom, self-understanding, tolerance and kindness - in other words, bias worth valuing.

    “A presumption among many thoughtful people is that the great enemy of a good life and a decent world is something called ‘bias’. By bias, people have come to understand a twisting of the facts towards dark and entirely nefarious ends. According to this interpretation, bias is invariably and necessarily bad. In some quarters, the word has simply grown synonymous with evil…”

      Apply this reasoning to this very channel, which has advertised itself as, and this is a quote, "an open-minded, rigorous, un-ideological organization", but consistently demonstrates a bias against most ideologies, with such claims as - and these are more quotes, "religious beliefs are, of course, technically false," or "of course atheists are technically right", examples of answering one of those questions about which there are no facts.
      There is some very good advice to be found here, if you can get past the hypocrisy.

      I think our fear for bias is impeding our progress as a species. There is no one who can observe reality in an objective manner. We all have to do it through a persons eyes. Hence reality is fundamentally subjective. This doesn't mean that any opinion is just as good - we all exist in the same reality. It is rather that learning and evolving is not about being presented the facts, but a journey of experiences.
      Also could you make a video about existential dread? I would like to know what you think about all the anxieties about the complexity, meaninglessness, vastness, darkness, emptiness, and unfairness of reality which for me is a constant struggle. Is it possible to turn these fears into motivation? I really appreciate your videos.

      @Anders Chrstiansen Sorby,
      I agree, BUT,
      Just because some idea or belief or fact or opinion is subjective, doesn't mean we can't process it and work with the holder of that belief. Not all subjective things are equal and in fact some are subjective but mostly agreed on and others are subjective and only believed by a hand full of people. Some subjective things can even be mapped and their size estimated like you could map and estimate the size of people who agree to the subjective question "the president is good".
      What you can't do with subjective information is ignore that worldview of the person with the subjective information because world-views and bias are intimately connected and related. In fact, a world view is defined as the collection of bias and unprovable beliefs a person has. So if you have a bias related problem or a subjective problem you probably need to use fuzzy logic and worldview data science principles to work on the problem.

    When I was studying for my doctorate, one of the harshest things I learned was that despite the claim that the discipline was unbiased, it was a problem if you disagreed against prevailing theory or, God help you, you found fault with it. The academy was almost like a religious education camp. If you weren't a true believer or had doubts, you were subject to ridicule and other attacks. I was witness to attacks by one professor in particular, and they were nasty.
    As a result of this experience, I do not have a problem with other persons' biases, per se. I may have a problem with them, but those are my problems not those of anyone else. Everyone's biases, it seems to me, are the result of their experience and their ideologies. If I want my biases to be respected, I have to respect those of other persons.
    I must admit to one thing that troubles me about biases: when people take up arms and other attacks against the people who disagree with them. Then there is a real problem that cannot be ignored or dismissed.

    I'm confused! I probably missed something but how does one decided what is 'good bias'? Or good values? Surely a media producer that at least tries to be balanced, however impossible, is better than propaganda?
    Also. What about the facts from social science or psychology or biology? Surely they point to some truths about how we should live or set up systems?

  • @DeviantFish
    @DeviantFish 6 лет назад +146

    Interesting video! However, I think it commits an error. Here, you seem to be referring to bias as the feelings we have towards things when facts aren't available. While more commonly, bias favors certain views or positions despite the best available evidence pointing to the contrary.
    Just as you, quite rightly, point out we should avoid black and white extreme distinctions of bias, we should also avoid such distinctions between evidence and no evidence. Facts are not the only available evidence to us. We can use logic and reason, in a systematic way, to attain the highest probability to achieving the best possible outcome. This is not the "certainty" you speak of in the beginning of the video, but it is far better than embracing your own bias, whether in a high form or low, as this necessarily involves ignoring valid reason and evidence in favor what our own flawed preconceptions have led us to believe.

    • @einmuffin6063
      @einmuffin6063 6 лет назад +8

      But the problem is that facts always have to be interpreted, where a certain bias will come into play. While hard sciences can mostly remove that bias it is almost impossible to remove bias from politics or history

    • @michaelwells8412
      @michaelwells8412 6 лет назад +16

      So you're biased to the value of always coming to the best possible outcome? Also best outcome for who? What if you can argue with logic and reason that this outcome, which is in your biased view best, is a bad outcome for another person or group. Also how long are you taking to find the best outcome? Is a lack of outcome the worst outcome for someone?
      I have biases they are my values,
      - be kind,
      - always look out for people that are being treated unfairly,
      - elevate the voices of those that go unheard (listen and don't talk over them)
      - understand the problems of others (whether they understand those problems or not)
      - people or groups with power or ability to influence people and or policy should be fully open and accountable as they can cause the most damage to lives
      - a perceived good outcome for those in power should be treated with suspicion, checking it doesn't hurt another group of people
      These biases shape how I digest information, also how I relay information to others. I am more likely to read information from sources that have the same values, and be more critical to sources even when their evidence has substance because their biased conclusions directly contradict my values, for example "hate these people because of this evidence" "close borders because their problems aren't ours, helping will make us worse off"
      One value is to always find statistical evidence before believing or relaying information, but due to time constraints I may not find critical data that disproves me, and I'll relay incorrect info. In this another value learn to change ones mind in the face of sufficient evidence. And be accountable for it.
      Can you see that these biases are more likely to breed good outcomes. And the opposite values are more likely to breed bad outcomes (i.e be mean, ignore those treated unfairly) some people can reason with evidence that the opposite value is RIGHT. For example my values often mean I'm untrusting or prone to depression, doesn't give me stability, stops me from helping myself.

      @coreycox2345 6 лет назад

      I like your point about evidence or no evidence. The facts are not changed by what we know or don't know. It seems likely that we tend to have biases in comparing the two. This can be a challenge to critical thinking when there are also conflicting ideas that may or may not be relevant and no relatable context to sort them out.

    • @coreycox2345

    • @Thejampacker

      As our approach to achieving ‘the best possible outcome’ will differ depending on our geography, resource and social standing we can accept that there is no definitive system that can be implemented anywhere at any time that would even always work not to mind work best. We are organic creatures, and that is the romantic way of saying we are floppy, selfish and angry at the best of times and require all adaptable efforts to satiate our rigid collective needs. Sometimes it’s good to be radical, some times conservative, some times liberal, some times economical, understanding the pros and cons of these helps us know when and how to use them for our individual selves as well as the collective.

    I love it when the SOL makes a video that gets us all going. This is my fave video for a while, and I like them all. I for one would welcome a media that is more open about its biases: political commentators that are open about the way they vote, artists and celebrities able to be open about the opinions they hold, and a public (like me) who can recognise that bias is everywhere but be prepared to consider and empirically (or logically) reject texts that may come from a bias that is not our own.

    Make a video on MODERNISM & POSTMODERNISM, please.

    • @TerenceMichaelReeves
      @TerenceMichaelReeves 6 лет назад

      Modernism: Life is shiny and new. Everything moves quickly and we all live in the city now. Examples can be presented of modernist art that exalt urban life and modernist art that are critical of it.
      Postmodernism is a little more difficult to define with such reductive simplicity. It refers to the legacy of absurdist art rising and comes into its own somewhere around the 60s (although arguments can be made for earlier artists working in the "style"). I use scare quotes because it isn't necessarily a style in and of itself, but can be used to describe nearly anything in the conceptual sphere which follows the modernist movement, especially those that challenge established institutional dynamics in the art-world and beyond. (see: Yoko Ono and her performance pieces conceived for the express purpose of being ephemeral/intangible and impossible for the arts market to sell.) Of course, capitalism being what it is, adapted and found ways to sell shit (literally in some cases) anyway. Another example of postmodernist art could be: Rap, Hip Hop and the electronic avant-garde which source material from a variety of creators through the use of sampling and collage.
      We're kind of past the postmodern stage, but the definitions start to break down as we approach the present day, as there are no longer discrete overarching "movements" in the artistic sphere. Look for example at metal, where even slight variations in sound can be the argument for a new artistic "style".

    An existential take on this: Humans have around 175 cognitive bias that we know of, and those bias dictate which information we absorb will become a pressupossition of the world within our worldview, and then that worldview dictates our actions.
    These cognitive tendencies evolved to process a small social environment, not an unconsciously constructed globalized one. So the pressupossitions tend to be incoherent on "both sides".
    Also the news need to contextualize their content so the viewers understand them and I believe most contexts they base their news in are incoherent views of reality (Essentialist, normalcy, etc...)
    So I completely disagree with the video.
    The best strategy to politics is to understand cognition, to become immune to opinions that appeal to these cognitive tendencies, to marketing, political campaigns, normalcy bias, authority bias, conservatism bias, essentialism etc... It's the self emancipation.
    People don't really need news... they need the specific knowledge to overcome the human condition (forming appealing pressupossitions) so that their paradigm can strive easily towards coherent pressupossitions
    Animals need to have a coherent model of their environment to be able to survive it's naive to think we're diferent.

    • @victorlevoso8984
      @victorlevoso8984 6 лет назад +3

      hugo veloso I agree , though I want to add that its not only knowing about bias, you actually needed a constant effort and training to to mitigate the effects of cognitive bias .
      Also I think the people who made the video are using the words bias and factual in a weird way ( apart from them most likely not having a coherent and good epistemology) so your point won't get across the inferential gap.
      Like for example their idea fact seems to be just a certain sciencey thing instead of the usual meaning, it has to, for them to say there is no factual answer to economics questios , instead of saying we don't know or aren't sure of them.

    • @teddayer6523
      @teddayer6523 6 лет назад +2

      hugo veloso i agree with you. At the same time what is specific to humans is leisure and fantasy. And it doesn’t matter wether it’s biased or not. Like arts. It’s nothing but subjectivity. And subjectivity is necessarily synonymous to cognitive “Bias”. Don’t you think?

    • @hugovelho
      @hugovelho 6 лет назад

      Yeah I agree, art and subjectivity require a number of cognitive biases. But I think being aware of cognitive biases won't eliminate them unless we merge with AI or something like that.
      Being aware just affects the individual worldview, so the context in which subjectivity happens will be improved.
      For example, if you compare a tv show where the writer enjoys philosophy and a show where the writer doesn't. The ideas and concepts of the philosophical writer are more relevant because the writer has a worldview with a more coherent context.
      Regarding art and subjectivity I think knowledge of these cognitive biases can even widen people worldview, because cognitive biases filter information, so people dismiss information that is not appealing enough.

    I'm depressed, and I think that I need some help with sorting something out a bit. Maybe I just need to be reassured that it isn't in fact worthless to keep up a positive outlook on life. I feel that our societies and cultures are so full of hatred and fear of each other, on every comment section online and on every opinion - people can't meet half way. People leave cruel and hurtful comments masking it with free speech... I don't live in America, but I see the effects of Trump and the prints some of his followers make. With negativity, ignorance, rasicm, the so called fake news, everyone being so butthurt, women getting death threats because they dare speak out on sexual assault. I am a sensitive person, and my self esteem is barely non-existent and my faith in society is balancing on a thread that's easily cut by news of war or blatant racism and backwards thinking, especially in my own country. People want to shove away others, there is no room for discussion and there is nothing that brings us together. I keep thinking that we are doomed, that we'll never get along and sooner or later hate and ignorance will get the better of everyone and we will start wishing for new wars. Also the oceans will be dead in 10 years because that was apparently fake news. So please, is there anyone who can recommend or say anything that can help build up my faith in our future? What do I have to live for in this world? It feels senseless and meaningless to even try to build up something that will be demolished sooner or later. We keep making the same mistakes over generations, so when will we truly learn?

      all you can do is try to contribute something better to this world, add good that will at least cancel out someone's evil. but I think it's important to try to see that you kind of have to also live your life for yourself, for the people you choose to have around you, and create a space with your day to day life that makes you /happy/.
      I know exactly the feeling you're talking about, the overwhelming hopelessness and the disgusting state the world is in because of dumb humans smfh. And it's not something one person can just.. fix, or set right. Yet, when you live your life in a way that doesn't contribute to like, hurting the enviornment, or perpetuating hate in society, ect, it at least gives you that comfort that you are capable of good. You can also surround yourself with tolerant people, and try to interact with others ignorance in the way you wish they'd interact with you. It sounds so silly but, be the change you wanna see in the world, and all that, because it can have more of an effect than you think. You won't fix it all on your own, or quickly, but the people around you will see you, be exposed to the idea of not just reacting with disagreements and disdain, and the more people who live like you, who just try to live life recycling and volunteering and then and turning off the water when you brush your teeth and going out to vote for less corrupt politicians, ect ect, the more people like that, the more of a chance this world has, yanno.
      So all we can do is our best, love. It's an irkingly dark world, but there's a lot of beauty in it and you can really find peace in making your own space in it. Surround yourself in what and who you love, interesting people and in an interesting place!! There's no bar to necessarily meet, just help in the little ways that you find yourself able to.

      I own a business , 98% of the customers are so nice you would work for free if you had no bills or employees etc to pay, 2% of the customer are so bad you actual pay them to go away and regret building your dream, sharing it with the world or doing anything. We keep these stats, it really is the ratio. Sometimes it takes a dozen good ones to recover from the bad ones, and then we get people so nice it restores your hope in humanity. I try to be of of those positive people to others as it helps me to feel better also. You would be surprised how easy it gets to say nice things to people who you see during the day, people with their own bad days you can fix with a minute or less of effort. You will walk away feeling a little bit better on life knowing you have a super power for good after you make the waitress smile when the guests before her were one of the 2% bad people.

    there is good bias and bad bias, however what we should aim for is the least biased, most factual evidence to base the way we live our lives on. having no bias at all is on the verge of impossible, however combating negative bias is imperative to a functioning society

    I always respect someone a lot more when they can admit they're biased, because then even if I don't agree with them I at least know they have some sense for humility and self-awareness... and if I do agree with them it ends up being a healthy reminder of my own values as a reflection of theirs. The negative connotation of bias is due to its connection to deceit, and as you mentioned in the video the main deceit being that of claiming neutrality when it's so fucking obvious there's an agenda being pushed.
    That being said if you're paying attention everyone is biased, because everyone has priorities... and even if the person or organization you're listening to won't remind you, you can (and really should) remind yourself.

    Lately, a pattern of thought has been stirring through my mind that there is no such thing as truth. Everybody has their own perspective and interpretation, especially when it comes to reality. Psychology states that memory is constructed and we can't process everything we experience. Even science itself is an agreement upon a mass group of people that share the same experience, but some things are beyond the reach of these experiences that science defines (or the "truth"). If someone says that the sky is green, scientifically they are wrong, but if they visualize the sky as green, we cant knock them for that because we can't enter their brain and experience their life. Even if the masses have come up with an explanation for that person's experience (color blindness), you can't take away that person's truth. So when it comes to things like bias, I just see it as everyone stating their own truth. Nobody is wrong, nobody is right. It just is what it is ( i know i sound hipster). but like the video stated, u have to choose your own truth, otherwise i think you'll go insane. just my view sorry for the essay.

    What should a person focus more on? Fighting issues of the world but not giving much importance to family or take care of his family and make his children good people and only moderately take part in issues of the society? That's a kind of bias as well. Which is the better bias?

    I am Bias on an absurdly individual level. Crazy Sane would be another way of describing it.
    The first statement already created a few problems. We are not I. We are a mixture of signals competing for attention, that will eventually win out against all the other signals. It just gives a strong illusion of being an individual.
    Knowing now that I am "we", allows us to shift perspectives more easily.
    But we is often stuck in argument, trying to distinguish which signal to follow and why.
    This has weirdly enough ended up instilling a biased on the people around, that we is not an Idiot.
    But we are proud of the fact that we managed to come to the same conclusions leading to judge our self as an Idiot.
    Now we are working on discovering a way to make money being an Idiot.
    We shift from hopefully optimistic to exhausted pessimism in a widely, quick and chaotic spectrum scale.
    We are still trying to determine if we are alone in this state, or if others haven't had a chance to discover this problem.
    Time to consult the idiot masters. They do provide a lot of food for thought.

    Nice bit of information and discussion!!.. I too think that there are no ends or justifiable means to a biased society.. there aren't many lasting sociological benefits to the ideas of right and wrong as long as there is a sliver of what we label "freedom" in this world.. it's as if we've launched ourselves into a cycle of correcting our own preconceived notions about things we have very few facts concerning.. it's time we begin to look at things and life a lot more holistically.. biases breed divisiveness.. are we not advanced enough to know that we could accidentally end ourselves whilst arguing with ourselves?

    Bias, these days, does not mean taking a side when fact aren't available but taking side when fact are pointing at something else . Example: Defending a racist because we are raciste. Again this is only a ressent definition of bias, but language does evolve.

    I don’t know if it’s only me. But this clip has a technical problem. After playing for 3 seconds and it doesn’t matter if it’s from the beginning or not, the sounds goes into reboot sound effect and speeds up. Eventually RUclips app crashes and closes itself. I’m using iPhone 8 with the latest update and RUclips is updated too.
    By the way other clips work just fine.

    When I think of biases, I tend to think of cognitive biases, such as confirmation bias (seeking out and interpreting new evidence as confirming your beliefs). It should be important not to encourage this type of behavior, however natural or intuitive it is.

    really a very pedantic look on a topic that has largely come about simply from people opposing bias, when at least i interpret them as opposing bias either conflicting with their views, or bias that conflicts with broader societal morals and ideals.
    this video does not do the topic much justice or provide much original insight or content outside of pedanticism until the closing statement, where it for some reason tells a new train of thought about publicising bias and ideals, which was a good and novel thought compared to giving a false presentation of factual journalism.
    i understand that these videos are mostly thought streams or rambles a lot of the time but it would be cool to have videos that are less focused on just a technicality such as people saying that they oppose bias in general

  • @zodayn4767
    @zodayn4767 6 лет назад

    Facts exist but without biased judgment hold no meaning, they are simply a resource to explain your bias with and demonstrate why the topic is important to you. Every form of communication is telling of what you find important because you choose to bring up a topic. So to be biased in a good way you should communicate with open intents and use facts to clearly explain your biased perspective.

    I think referring to a news organization as biased isn't just supposed to mean that they have a world view, but that they care a lot less about what's actually going on than about promoting that world view. To effectively make value decisions about a situation you have to be able to take an unfiltered look at what the situation actually is first.

    Hey ! I've noticed the title in French ("DANS la louage des préjugés") is not quite correct. The direct translation of 'bias' is not my favourite although it makes sense, but the 'In' translation is definitely incorrect, grammar-wise. 'In' should be translated to 'De' and not 'Dans'. I think it's important to try to figure out how people who disagree with us came to believe what they believe. It does no good to argue our biases to the point of insulting each other, but it is of incredible value to learn where other people are coming from. Sometimes I'm not up to this kind of discussion but, when I am, I try to ask questions of people to better understand their point of view. Surprisingly, I almost always find that there are things I agree with someone on even when we come to entirely different points of view on other things.
    The worst kind of bias, though, is neutrality bias. At least we know what the bias of Fox News or the Daily Mail is, but we have CNN here that will just say what politician A says and what politician B says without doing any research to tell us which of these politicians is right about what they have said and why. When they do that, it fails to inform the viewer of what the truth is. Sometimes it's just a matter of opinion but there are a lot of times when there are real facts and one politician is actually lying. It would be nice if they would at least mention the facts about the situation, even if they don't tell us what they personally think. Of course, I watch left-wing news on You Tube, but I do so mainly because I want to hear someone's opinion about what's going on and maybe a little bit because I don't want to pay for cable TV that I don't really enjoy anyway. People should just put their biases right out in the open so we all know where people are coming from.

    It can be simple maybe. Earth is a sphere. So every point can be centre and no point can be centre at the same time. I hope you understand what i am trying to say. So everyone is at their point, it’s central for themselves. But in ‘fact’, there can be no central, neutral point for everyone. So the fact we all have our own bias is true and clear for me. If someone try to claim his perfectly neutral at some issues, he isn’t understanding about himself and the issue enough sadly.

  • @inru6253
    @inru6253 6 лет назад

    The notion of bias involves unreasonably holding on to a certain opinion about the outside world even in the face of facts that contradict it. Where we have no clear facts, we can talk about reasonable probabilities. It's ok to say we don't know for sure. It's not ok to just choose whichever narrative we prefer and present it as fact.
    A personal preference for the "dark consoling pessimism of Schopenhauer" is just that: a personal preference pertaining only to the person holding the opinion. It is subjective and should not be universalized. Generalizing such personal opinions, and claiming they must be true for everyone, is what bias is.
