I find X4 Foundations to be one of the most frustrating games I've ever played and yet the payoff has amounted to this possibly being one of my top 2 or 3 games of all time. It's difficult to get started, it doesn't hold your hand (putting it mildly), you have to take night community classes to learn this beast, but the reward is so worth it. I have put Elite Dangerous, No Man's Sky, Empyrion, and Star Citizen on the back-burner for this game.

Have you played X Rebirth before? Let me tell you, as someone who just bought it recently, some of the basic mechanics in X4 are like the final exam of the top university in X Rebirth. Everything you think is hard in X4 is downright impossible in X Rebirth. I'm absolutely honest here, once you play and understand the basics of XR you realize just how easy and user firendly X4 really is. I just can't stress it enough.

*I stop playing all other space games for X4* X4 is the very best. The big advantage of X4 is that you can play the part you want without worrying about how the universe will change when you are not there. I LOVE IT. Sin of a Solar is very good; however, you can not visit any of the stations or fly a ship.
The Learning Curve is WORTH IT. This is the best space game I have ever played in my life.

I need the scope of X4 and the Scale of ED and No Mans Sky to combine with the depth and detail of Star Citizen. Also with the empire building I need to be able to build out and manage an entire planet. Research technology trees for planetary defense. Build orbital defense platforms. Grow and manage planetary npcs that fill the roles on the planet. Bam!!

Bad bug Ive got yesterday (in july 2022):
I bought a big mining ship and was onboard on foot. When I wanted to get out in space with my suit, the exterial door didnt open and I was stuck in the little space suit airlock, clipping inside the ship geometry. I couldnt get out at all and had to reload.
    Very frustrating.
But the game is still mega fun, which I did not expected.
And I really like the singleplayer aspect.
That is something you hardly get nowdays with such a title. As you mentioned, Elite is online, Star Citizen is online, Eve is, well, its name is Eve online ^^
    But X?
That is something for the hearts of the real singleplayer fans who dont want to get ganked by frikkin overpowered and bored players all the time.

Once you have unlocked Teleportation you can simply teleport out of sector and back (provided you have something to teleport close enough by, that problem is gone at the third stage of the research though), on re-entering the sector your vessel will be placed outside the station.
For that, you have to play the HQ plot of course, but you need the HQ for so many things, better start early. After the first million or so...

you can do a custom start and just skip the PHQ part if you've already done it in previous playthroughs. it doesn't affect the storylines from the expansions. but the expansion starts are 100% unique and I love that... The stranded start immediately acclimates you to using a spacesuit and pirating and stealing new vessels.

Thank you so much for this review of X4. Ive played all the X3 games and loved the complicated simplicity of those games. Like you, I’ve waited until now to even purchase the game due to the bugs......and an upgrade to a true gaming laptop. Because of the hype of the game not playing on the better than average computer; I was expecting a graphically intense experience that will cause smoke to billow from your heat vents. Not what I expected from all the hype at all. I’m very excited they went back to the X3 style game with all sorts of modern updates. I’m wondering why they haven’t combined this excellent format with a bit more style from X rebirth, which is an excellent game....but just add the ability to pilot other ships. I’m very excited to really jump into X with the help of videos like yours. Thank you so very much.

I'm new to X series, but this game got me addicted, and i still not figured out everything yet.
Lasta night i was playing and i was helping the PAR faction to conquer HOP territory, and i was piloting only a Syn destroyer, at first you think you can use the same strategy as you do for a fighter, but nope, you need to adjust your tactics to the hulking beast that the syn is, even though, once you tame the beast, it becomes unstoppable.
The turrets would do the job to deal with small ships, while the main guns are to be used in stations and larger ships, but combat still can be very engaging and strategic.
For example, in one fight last night i was battling a odysseus destroyer, when i notice that some 20 km away another one was heading to my way.
My shields where down when i finished the first Odysseus, i could try to evade the odysseus shots at long distance but this would only delay the inevitable...
    So, what i did?
I hit travel mode and run pass the odysseus, w.hen i pas by it, I disable the flight assistant, and turn shooting the Odysseus, ended up right behind him, and i made short work of their engines, and soon after the Odysseus was no more.
See? Theres a lot of things going on in X4, and sometimes you need to be clever and use you knowledge of the game mechanics to do some amazing stuff.
Also, after finishing the battle i hade to lick my syn wounds, it took a lot of damage, so i put my space wheelchair and went to fix turrets, the engine.
Also i think egosoft guys should add a command to hold the repair drones, because the spawn automatically when your ship start to take damage and they get destroyed very easily, especially when large things go boom in close proximity of your ship, the shield ships can take the damage, but the drones don't.
One mode that i added to the game is the escape pod mod, with this one you are automatically and can escape the battle with your crew, wich is way more grounded than be teleported outside the ship, while your crew burns.

The game checks all of the boxes for me. I love simulation and sandbox rpgs with empire building mechanics. Word of warning however; X4 is not optimized and slows down during the late game and large battles and lowering graphical settings does little to help. The devs have not given us much reason for optimism regarding increased performance as the problems seem to be hard coded in the engine. I am going to hold off playing until I upgrade my PC later this year with the release of the next generation of CPU's and GPU's. There is also a Star Wars overhaul mod called Interworlds, that is worth checking out since I know this channel posts SWG videos. Interworlds is close to releasing the next update which promises new races and ships. If you have always wanted to command a star destroyer or mon calamari cruiser, this is your game.

I'm sick of all the competition. The PERFECT space game is virtually objective.
Huge, preferably endless systems so numerous a whole population could never discover everything in one lifetime not even nearly.
High fidelity and large scale planetary landings. No faking the horizon because that IS the horizon, no loading screens. What you see in orbit represents what you get on the ground.
Comprehensive ship interiors and survival mechanics. Food, drink and rest as well as ships being real ships with reql functions, akin to Starship Simulator or Stat Citizen.
Realistic economy and world, such as Elite Dangerous. With large scale powerplay always being run. A lot of issues but the way that game employs space politics as well as the scale is absolutely unrivalled and should not be ignored.
Construction, like Space Engineers but more. Stations, bases, fighters, capital ships all being built and sold and published from player creations, like Dual Universe.
And too many more to mention. But any space game fan would find no issue in these features and with octo core CPUs, 32gb of Ram and 8-12gb of VRAM being recommended specs in the next few years, I'd argue such a game will be possible if all the people that made all these come together.
    Don't compete, collaborate.

I Might be Late to the Party but i want to give my 2 Cents to this.
About the Question if X4 is a Tripple A Game i can tell you No. Egosoft is a small Indipendant German Studio with 20 to 30 Pepole. They do the X Series for ca 20 Years now and have no big Publisher or company behind them.
So something like a X 4 is a Massive Project for them. And even when it is a Bit Rough around the Edges it is the most New Player Friendly Game in the Series. X 3 for example where much more Tricky to play.
If you want my thoughts on this i can tell you that i love the Game and Play it since Launch and since then it have Masively Improved. Egosoft is a Company that Listens to the things the Fans Want and love and always try to improve the game for anyone even when you dont pay for the Great DLCs.
and yes i know i sound like a Fanboy and that might be the case. But i have still tonns of fun with this game.

i liked the game but sadly, this game cannot fullfill his promisses.
explain: a lot of stuff is coded into this game, and yes, there are sooo many things to do.
but, once you are the big imperial leaderguy who can decide about the future of an entire universe,
especially once you are big enough to start terraforming.
the game comes to a point where it shows you it's limits.
it realy comes down, to how mutch of the content your pc can handle. i promise you, noone ever did EVERYTHING the game had to offer and thats simply cause of what happends to these safefiles. in my universe, i was pumping out Asgards in my own Fleet production segments as fast as an earlie pioneer builds starfighters and that is actually the kind of Eco you need to have in order to completely Terraform planets, so imagine like 24 spacestations in every major Race headquarters with fully automated Tradestations in order to bring energycells from the DLC sector over to the Split sector with hundreds or thousands of player programmed tradevessals, while simultaniously having Gate and Recycle fortresses at all Xenon Sector entrys and playing god in the Ballance of the universe in order to make the very most profits by trading with other races, actively controlling who dies and who lives like a god. i was so big, i manipulated other races in a way they would have war with each other, just to gain more profits by selling them ships
at this point if i would want to start the game, my savefile takes like 24 minutes to load,
the game has way more to offer but my system wich is actually not that bad in cooperation with my sparetime , is unable to get there. the imagination of throughing away 24 minutes of my sparetime in order to play a game alone freaks me out so bad that i start walking outside to see other people, can you imagine how frustrated a real gamer has to be in order to do that?
this game is litterly miles ahead of the competition and of what is possible and now that their stepping forward to new technologies it gets left behind like myself as a kid in the supermarket.
this Game is Too good in a bad way lol
this game is so good, that nobody talks bad about it, cause nobody reached the fitting faction size in order to be competent enough to actually drop something bad onto it. i mean like, you gotta be a pro before shittalking something right? xD

Name me one other game where you can command an "M" sized ship to take off from a station and land on your "XL" sized destroyer.
And in the meantime and on the same space station as the "M" sized ship, you're in an "S" sized ship that's docked. But you're not the pilot.
So you command the pilot of that "S" sized ship to land on the "M" sided ship that you've already told to land on the "XL" battleship. _I hope you're still with me?_
Then you go into third person mode, sit back and watch it all gracefully unfold as your "S" sized ship catches up with the "M" sized ship and lands. And then a minute later, that "M" sized ship, on which you've landed on your "S" sized ship, closes in and lands on that "XL" battleship.
Now you can see them all when you zoom your camera in and out. Your "S" sized ship landed on the "M" sized ship that has landed on the "XL" sized ship.
However... 10 minutes later, you've told the pilot of your "S" sized ship, of which you're still on board, to fly somewhere. And while it's going through an asteroid field, it stuffs your "S" sized ship right into a large asteroid and now you can't get out of the damn thing.
Or... You've landed on a shipyard and you've ordered, for instance, an "S" or "M" sized ship and now you're stood right next to that ship and you're watching it being built, almost pixel by pixel. That's quite delightful and calming to watch.
But then you've commanded a ship to _"do something"._ When you check back, sometime later, that they're carrying out your order, you realise that, that ship has decided that it wanted to do something totally different. It's now half a dozen or more systems away from where it's supposed to be and is now charging through Xenon space with a dozen Xenon breathing down it's neck.
*The joys and pitfalls of X4.* _But I wouldn't be without any of it._

A lot of the complaints I'm seeing revolve around the conduct of Frozenbyte developers, how the game lacks features or PVE content to make the space feel more alive (since there's a vast emptiness and long travel times between the stations and asteroid rings), no PVP anymore, ignored bugs, etc.

Can't answer that, but I can tell you I went with the bundle. Past experience has kind of convinced me it's better to start with as much as you can get rather than getting comfortable with one set of rules and toys then having to relearn things when you buy the next set.

The one thing I have issues with X4 is the eventuallity that one play style must change dramatically to that of management then an actual explorer, pirate, etc etc etc.
IF and I assume it never will, become a cooperative to even a small degree, envoling at least two to four player's. At some point not likeing management games. I'll have to put it aside. I realized year's ago, that I'm extremely good at doing any job I'm asigned to do, aka: a GRUNT. I'm not to any degee a manager. IF X4 were to have a coop mode, I could and would find a manager somewhere, and thus continue to play. Manager's need Grunts and Grunts need manager's.

    • @leinadreign3510
      @leinadreign3510 2 года назад +1

I hope it wont get an online mode.
Not even a co-op one. Because it wont stop there. People would cry for a pure online mode and then we have the star citizen, the Elite or every other "MMO" title out there with all its flaws.
      I enjoy my singleplayer games.
But I also understand if people want to play with their friends, especially if its a complicated game.
Im not that far into X by now, so I dont know what it feels to have hundreds of ships or space stations (I only have two mining ships and nothing more). ^^

I started my first game and found I was soon managing dozens and hundreds of ships and doing nothing but managing an empire. Boring and frustrating. I started over with the Avarice so I could be a loner pirate and not a corporate CEO. Doesn't matter, the game pushes you into massive fleet ownership/management. So frustrating. To make it worse, 4 FPS is unplayable (and yes I have a great system and amazing video card etc).

X4's interface makes the vanilla TES V:Skyrim's UI look like a professional, well-made user-friendly experience. Aside from that, bugs bugs bugs, Xenon are ridiculous and just wipe you without breaking a sweat, turrets never hit anything and big ships are practically rocks in space that barely move and look like shit. Overall 3/10 , it is fun until it's not and that switch happens pretty quickly.

the gamestarts of the most recent dlc are incredibly easy to get into, they re very much what generally people would expect of a space game, a very entertaining story driven campaign, that smoothly presents you the universe, specially the gamestart named stranded, but the uber mega dynamic universe and all its complexities are still there, for when and if you want to explore that

but if you re into mmo s then there s nothing like Starbase from frozenbyte, every player in the World plays in the same universe, physics based, first person shooting and melee combat for characters and ships, the skyscrappers in the city in the moon have actual proper interiors, trade, build spaceships, spacestations, ground bases, sell ores, ships, etc, siege gameplay mechanics, mine, combat, salvage, etc

Complaining that it is too hard to learn and you want to be spoon fed, is I guess a whiny valid reaction. It's just not because the game was designed in a way that you can't figure it out, it is that some people just don't have the education and motivation to learn. There is nothing in the games design that "hide" how something works behind some magic black box, you can figure everything out by observing and doing trial and error.
Some of it also seems to be him being so confused that he doesn't know the default settings, from him having changed things, I'm not sure it would be valid for me to say we should stop having chess grand masters, because I couldn't compete with one if I tried? Or that we should never have climbed down from the trees (Not that we wherever living in trees), because this guy find it too hard to walk on two legs.

on paper this is the best game ever made. In practice 40 hours in my economy completely stopped. my 20 miners completely full with no one to sell to. my 4 traders can't find any trades. No one is at war. I spend my last 10 mil to build a station and 9 hours real time in its only 1/4 of the way done. No one is at war. no materials are being moved around. Its just completely stopped. I just wanted to build a huge fleet and destroy my enemies but I can't even build a single fighter because my empire is at a complete stand still. I wanted to love this and play it forever, instead I want to throw my pc out of the window and pour gasoline on it. The most basic thing like building a factory needs a 1 hour you tube tutorial. I tried to do the games tutorial and it didn't even expliain how to do what it told you to do. Accept mission for example, it doesn't tell you how to accept the mission it just says accept it. when You do the build tutortial it says do build. What the F does that mean????? I can't even tab out to let the station build while I watch house MD Because it pauses the F'ning game when I Alt tab. I've probably watched 15 hours of you tube tutorials and I still don't know whats happening or how to do anything.

Save yourself some money, it looks cool but the controls are absolutely a** Before you rage I could dog fight just fine. My complaint has to do with having to go through multiple sub windows or press multiple commands just to execute an order. That isn't fun, that's just exhausting and what you do at work.

I get a chuckle every time people try to compare X4:Foundations to almost any other game or series. Especially when it comes to how this game doesn't hold your hands or is not intuitive (have you started any game play? Every one has tutorials that can help you do anything you need to in this game) and how it's not as "immersive" as some other space games. If this game really was as "janky as hell" I'm sure it wouldn't have such a robust following and modding community. Think of X4 as the Skyrim of space games, so much to do, mods everywhere, and more tutorials and community videos than you could shake a stick at. Happy hunting!!
