Will say it again. Thanks to you and the Pet Food Puzzle Guy, I go to the pet food stores and look at the shelves of Hills, Purina, and Royal Canin so much differently now. I used to look upon those with disdain, and searched out for all the......"designer" foods. You know which ones I'm talking about.😄 We are now so much more informed on what counts: the NUTRIENTS, not the ingredients.
As I've said in other videos of yours, a "simple" Purina Pro Plan formula saved our little girl's skin from a food allergy(from one of those "designer" foods).
    APPRECIATE ALL YOU DO, MA'AM.

    Great video as always!
In the description tab of the lamb and rice food they state "To help give you the peace of mind every pet parent deserves, the premium nutrition of this food has been proven through a feeding trial, as defined by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). This achievement will appear on the next printing of these bags." Looks like they did a feeding trial for this specific formula. Their weight loss and all life stages (grain inclusive one) formulas are also backed by an AAFCO feeding trial. I still wouldn't choose feeding this brand.

Happy Purrsday. The calcium and phosphorus in the cat food (all life stages is all they have) is too high. BTW, "A Beautiful Mess' was written by Jason Mraz. He co-wrote and performed several songs with Colbie Caillat. We saw her in concert several times and met her. My cat Colbie is named for Colbie Caillat. You continue to be the best!

8:47 - aside from the domestic dog, do you know maned wolf is the only canids which breaks the "costs of carnivory” paradigm which states carnivores larger than 21 kg must hunt larger prey items such as deer? 40% to 90% of their diets is a fruit called "wolf apple".
Just thought might as well throw that up there since we know early domesticated dogs had diets heavy in fish and grains both dogs cannot acquire on their own without assistance from humans

Could you talk about the different ingredient listing of types of protein and if it matters. For example you hear things like "You should only feed chicken but not chicken meal" but the next person will say "Chicken meal is great but chicken byproducts are only hooves and bones and is terrible." Does any of this actually matter?

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  Месяц назад +1

As far as listed ingredients on the package it doesn’t hold much value because quality is not a parameter in the listed ingredients. For example how will you know if in order to list “chicken” as the first ingredient a company uses low quality chicken just to market manipulate while another company who doesn’t participate in market manipulation just uses a high protein quality meal. You don’t. So yes ingredients matter, but you can’t get than information from the ingredient list. You have to look at the final nutrient profile to determine quality. Low quality meat sources will have higher calcium and phosphorus.

A few months ago, we went through a long nightmare of an allergic reaction(TERMINAL itching) to a food change for our dog. After years of no issues feeding her Freshpet, we decided to try Farmer's Dog. Big mistake. Make a long story short, one vet recommended Hill's z/d hydrolized kibble. Tried it for 3-4 weeks, and it didn't seem to help. Saw another vet who also checked for mites(that's another story), and then recommended Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach, Salmon. He said this particular kibble helped many patients. He emphasized the Salmon formula only. We can never be 100% sure it was the switch to this Pro Plan kibble, but we CAN be sure, our little girl is back to her healthy self/skin/coat, & no more itching. She of course, is still on the Pro Plan. 👍

@@mcbeezee2120 I fell into the “Purina and Science Diet “ are horrible and “better ingredients” marketing. Earthborn Holistic Unrefined Salmon was just not working. It was causing him to burp excessively and he kept dealing with acid reflux. He is allergic to chicken, so, I started researching dog foods, again, and came across this channel and The Pet Food Puzzle Guy channel. And what an eye opener! I switched Faelen to Purina Proplan and he has done awesome on this food! I love the Salmon as well, because I feel it is better for their skin and coats.

@@AnimalDocRea I wanted to ask another question about the pro plan large breed formula. I am considering switching my 72 lb husky from the adult large breed sensitive stomach to the adult sensitive stomach salmon and rice. My question is that in the guaranteed analysis the “large breed” has less fat, more fiber, less calories, more epa and dha, and higher levels of glucosamine. ( I am not concerned about the levels of this because he is on a separate joint supplement). Anyway, would those differences not make this a better food for a larger breed, or are those levels higher and not necessary to be able to promote this as a large breed food. Does a larger dog not need these higher levels?

@@AnimalDocRea Does LA meet WSAVA standards?:
It's natural for pet parents to wonder if they're making the right choices for their pets, but it's not always easy to know what questions to ask. In an attempt to provide consumers with guidance, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) has posed a series of questions that may be helpful when choosing a pet food.
While these questions are well intentioned, they do not tell the whole story. For instance, at Life's Abundance the safety of your family is of utmost importance to us. One way we ensure this safety is by refusing to sell through retailers (online or brick and mortar). That's because 1) Selling through a third party causes us to lose control over the quality of the product you will receive (temperature and pest control, length of time in storage, and so on), and 2) Our direct relationship with you will allow us to reach you quickly in the event there is ever a question about the finished quality of a product you received.
That said, we also value transparency and are happy to provide these answers to the list of questions from WSAVA:
All of Life's Abundance dry foods are manufactured by Ohio Pet Foods, which is located in Ohio, and its sister company, Southern Tier, which is located in New York. Both of these manufacturing partners have sterling reputations for producing superior quality pet foods. Further, Ohio Pet Foods is a third-generation, privately owned and operated company. Our canned dog and cat foods are made by Simmons Manufacturing.
Perhaps one of the largest dog and cat canned food manufacturers, they have operated their plants as a family business for 50 years. They are located in Kansas, Arkansas, New Jersey and Ontario.
While these manufacturers do produce products for other companies, it is important to note that all of our formulas, and even our vitamin mixes are proprietary and are not produced for any other brand.
Not only do we have long term relationships with our manufacturers, as with all of our products, we routinely monitor the production of these foods, to ensure that all of our products live up to our exacting standards.
As for our product formulation, in over twenty years of producing premium products, the core values of our product formulas have never wavered and we remain steadfast in our commitment to provide families with optimal nutrition for their pets. While the make-up of our team has changed over the years, the pillars of our current product formulation team include in-house staff, as well as industry-renowned veterinary nutrition consultancies whose vast experience includes years on staff with one of the world's largest and most recognizable pet food brands.
All of our foods meet or exceed AAFCO nutrient profile standards and include an AAFCO statement on the label. We are currently engaged in feeding trials which is a years-long process for all life stage formulations. As a maintenance formula, the trial on our Weight Loss Formula for Adult Dogs has been successfully concluded.
We do not share the complete nutrient profile for our formulas as this is proprietary information. However, if there are particular nutrient levels of concern to your pet we could provide those upon request.

To me the most important aspect is the nutrient profile a food provides as it pertains to the published data, all the rest is just noise. Unfortunately this food fell quite a but short in many factors resulting in the low score. I am not familiar with Dr. Jane. I am not familiar with her credentials ( is she a boarded vet nutritionist?). I am also not familiar with her research or read any papers she may have published. That may certainly be something that interests you and may affect your scoring of the food, but for me unless the nutrient profile is there, I really am not interested in going further or investing time in research when there are so many other options that meet the mark.
