    Interesting and all well-known faults/mistakes. It is very easy for the DVSA to come out with these reasons from examiners. What they fail to account for are the poor road markings on most roads which at times make it impossible for them to be read by pupils. In my area, there are many mini and major roundabouts which have virtually no markings to make it easy for people to be in the right lanes leading to fails.
    Obviously, the list does not include grumpy and pesky examiners who apply arbitrary rules to suit their agenda. Some examiners are personable and make pupils relaxed while others make you want to stop midway and return home. And that is a fact.
    What I think should happen is for both instructors and examiners to have a meeting if that can be possible where grey areas can be ironed out and passed on to pupils. A good example is on observations when turning. Some instructors insist on a quick glance at the side mirror while others insist on a 90-degree turn to show that you are looking. The same arbitrariness is applied by some examiners who keep ticking away every time you do not look the way they want. When my head is turned almost a full 90 degrees, how do I react to potential hazards ahead of me in busy areas?
    The whole exercise, for the most part, is a lottery. Some test routes are easy to pass while others are full of hazards that will fail most who are already out there driving for years. Some examiners are known to pass pupils who hit kerbs, don't get their reverse manoeuvres right etc while others will fail you even when you creep to get a better view of traffic at junctions!

      I completely agree. My first examiner literally did make me feel like giving up and returning home half-way through. I was literally holding back my tears throughout the journey. My second one, however, was so nice and made me feel very comfortable. I have my third test coming up on Wednesday and I’m really hoping I get an examiner like my last one. It’s an intense enough situation without the examiner making you feel reduced.

      I agree many road markings by us are very faded or signs hard to spot. What I would say when people learn anything they are very focused, after tests knowledge slips on some things as people are thinking of msny different things not just driving but it is important to go over things again

    I'm so surprised that steering was as high up the list as it was. Steering control is something that gets exercised during every part of a driving lesson, so candidates should have had a lot of feedback by the time they take the test. Could this be because instructors are not challenging the candidates to be as precise and as smooth as they should be? What other explanations could there be?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 лет назад +2

      If you don’t think that the test was conducted properly, then there is a complaints procedure with the DVSA. Perhaps ask your instructor what is best to do?

    • @Dr_Lad
      @Dr_Lad 5 лет назад

      Advance Driving School Instructor said fail wont be changed to a pass. He wasn’t with me in the car. Examiner said radio is an everyday thing. and i shouldn’t have ‘noticed it even’... Its just a corrupt exam system. The Examiner will always be right apparently.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 лет назад

      If a complaint is upheld the result is a refund of your test fee, so that you can try again. It’s up to you as the driver to put the radio on or not, the examiner is only there as an observer and shouldn’t touch any of the cars buttons except to open their window or to help prevent danger.

    Real live traffic flow is unpredictable and erratic; oftentimes dangerous. Poor traffic planning and road markings, signs obscured by trees , intermediate roundabouts , ridiculous speed signs ( 60mph for 100 yrds then down to 30mph ! ) and other variables like the weather, time of day and mood of examiner make the driving test a lottery . Where else would a 47% pass rate be tolerated ? What’s required is a graduated license scheme over a period of 3 yrs where drivers are tested for different skills on separate occasions with restricted times of driving until all credits are earned for a full driving ‘ degree ‘ . Otherwise you will continue to get the same old anecdotes from driving instructors telling you they had ‘ no idea how he/she passed ‘ and can’t understand why he / she keeps failing or being denied a license .

    4:40 does not apply in my country. Seems like a strange rule to me...
    Why wouldn't you be allowed to indicate you want to leave your parking spot when traffic is coming?
    Maybe they want to park and would happily wait to take your space?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 лет назад

      If we indicate and it causes other traffic to swerve or brake (because they think we haven't seen them and are about to pull out) then it would probably fail the test.

    • @Robbedem
      @Robbedem 5 лет назад

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool Does this also apply when chaning lanes on a highway? Because many times when it's very busy, you have no choice but to start indicating, so that a car will actually let you move in. (otherwise you end up in a wrong lane)

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 лет назад

      If that situation arose on a test we would have to be very careful. We would always try to change our speed to find a gap, before indicating that we are about to change lanes. However, if there is solid traffic and no gaps at all, then we would prefer to follow our current path - even if it went somewhere else. Basically, if you can't change lanes safely, then don't.

  • @vintagetriplex3728
    @vintagetriplex3728 5 лет назад

    Would it be a fail if you don't turn your head towards the back when doing your observations ? When I drive I don't turn my head. I look at my rear view mirrors and my side mirrors and check over my shoulders.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 лет назад +1

      Possibly. If the examiner doesn’t feel that you are fully aware of what is all around the car, then there will be a fault of some kind. The severity of fault will vary depending on the situation. We always advise looking through the rear window before reversing - just in case something is directly behind us.

    What should you do if you're unable to read the road markings to select the appropriate lane?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 лет назад

      If we can’t see any road signs or markings, then stick to the default lane choices. If you spot that you are in the wrong lane, but it’s too late to change to the correct lane - then just follow the lane that you’re in. Driving in the wrong direction safely is fine on a test, but an unsafe lane change is dangerous and will fail the test.

    Another common fail is your vehicle moving in the opposite direction of your intended direction.
    Basically your vehicle rolling back and potentially hitting another vehicle behind you or vice verse when moving in reverse. I found hill starts very difficult to master on a manual vehicle in the beginning. I would roll back, spin the wheels, or even hesitate for fear for rolling back. Its especially difficult when you have to do this in rush hour traffic where so many things can happen.
