    As you know, over the past year I've really got into laser cutting and have found it to be a really useful tool for all sorts of model railway related projects. Until now I've been using the Falcon 2 but recently Creality reached out and asked me to take a look at their brand new upgraded laser cutter, the Falcon 2 PRO.
    This machine not only features a built in enclosure, camera, light bar, extraction fan and debris tray - but this version also came with both a 40w laser module for cutting through thick materials and a second 1.6w laser for finer engraving. And for those of you who want to cut through even thicker materials, Creality also have a 60w version in the works too will be formally announced later this month. There's a lot to love about this new upgraded laser cutter but how does it stack up to it's predecessor - let's find out!

    The creality is a real game changer.
    Being able to cut your own buildings for a layout is amazing,
    Could really let your imagination run wild and create who knows what building wise.
    Would also be cool if You need a narrower platform for a layout as well.
    If only I had the space for one of them 😅

      Yeah it's really changed the way I go about making things for layouts. My ideas are often more ambitious than my actual skill level and so having a machine like this is really handy for all sorts of jobs - from scale models to support structures or storage boxes. Thanks for watching 🤩

    I really like the upgraded version but the original 22w is still a great machine. It's nice to see they keep improving the designs. Great video - thanks for sharing 👍

      Yeah, definitely feels like they took on the feedback they got for the already great Falcon 2 and built in the features that people were asking for. Thanks for watching 😃

      It's likely only because this is more of a model railway focused channel and while laser cutting is somewhat related skill, it's not going to be be to everyones taste. I'm glad you enjoyed it it though, thanks for watching 😃

    would you be able to do a video on how everything is sized, like bricks windows and doors, shingles, or are you taking modern products and just scaling them down

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 месяца назад

      There's no real secret to it, I just use an online scale converter. So if you know the size of something like a door, you punch those dimensions in and it gives you the size in whatever scale you've chosen. Thanks for watching 👍

    How wobbly is the bed? Found a honeycomb base to be a lot more stable in the past and easier to hold stuff down with magnets.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 месяца назад +1

      It's fine, it's all part of the frame so doesn't wobble at all. I think this style of bed is what's used more commonly on expensive CO2 laser cutters. The rails can be easily removed and pushed closer together if you need something more stable for smaller items. The airflow is much better on these rails in comparison to a honeycomb bed too, so fewer burn marks which is great. Thanks for watching 😃

    Great to see these in action, I would love one, did you design the hut yourself or get it online, I know there are a number of sites where you can download the files. I managed to get quite a few to 3D print for my TT 120 layout, a church, farm cottage and walls. The only downside is it's a Creality, great innovations but terrible QC and customer service. I'm speaking from experience from owning 2 of their non working 3D printers. Took 10 months to get it sorted.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 месяца назад +2

      Generally for laser cutters there aren't many sites with files available at the moment and none with model railway specific designs. I can't speak for the 3D printing side of things but personally my experience with Creality has been great. Thanks for watching 😃

    I have seen other reviews where they had mentioned that the tray could be pulled out to allow for larger jobs to be done that way, by feeding materials through it from underneath. Is this not the case?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Месяц назад

      I don’t think so. It’s not mentioned by Creality as a feature and when you open the tray it triggers a safety switch that stops the laser so I don’t see how others are doing it. Thanks for watching 😃

    Can someone tell me what that style solid sheet retractable cover is actually called. I used their name for it and a bunch of other similar names but nothing comes up even close. It's usually a giant rolling floppy shop door or something or the airplane window but thats a totally different mechanism. Closest I can find is like a rolltop desk.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 месяца назад

      I don't know for certain but I'd imagine it's some sort of vinyl sheet that's been tinted to block out the light of the laser. Thanks for watching 👍

    Nice build! The pro features are impressive. There is quite a price difference between the 22W Pro and the 40W Pro; for model railways do you think extra power is worth it? Perhaps I should say could I get away with the lower powered laser version? 😊

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 месяца назад +2

      It really depends the thickness of the material you want to cut through. Up until now I've been using a 22w laser on thin materials and it was fine for my needs. But I have to admit it's nice to have the 40w version and know that it's not going to have a problem cutting through even thicker materials if I need it too. The fact it's essentially 3 lasers in 1 is very nice too - but ultimately if you're not going to need that functionality, the 22w is probably a good bet for a lot of people. Thanks for watching 🤩

    • @ausfoodgarden
      @ausfoodgarden 2 месяца назад +1

      I've got the old Falcon 10w unit and even that one is pretty good. I'm sure the 22w unit would be fine unless you are planning on cutting very thick or tough materials.
      I mostly use mine for 3mm ply or mdf and various thickness plastic sheets too. Works well for me.
      Edit: do get the air assist and a honeycomb bed if it's optional. Although I think the Falcon 2 has integrated air assist iirc.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Месяц назад

      Yes the air assist comes included with the Falcon 2 and the Falcon 2 Pro also has a bed built into the frame so no honeycomb needed.

    I’m hesitant to jump into making my own models. Looked at 3D printing a few times but I’m interested in laser cutting as well. I guess it’s more restrictive. Buildings and structures but not figures. Has anyone tried signals? Anything else it’s good for? I thought it was probably less fussy and prone to errors after hours of building like 3D printers

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 месяца назад +1

      I'd say designing for laser cutting is definitely easier than designing for 3D printing. That said, there's a lot of sites where you can download files for 3D printing which isn't the case for laser cutting - at least not to the same extent.
      Generally laser cutting works really well for larger structures while 3D printing is great for smaller details. You could technically make signals but I think they'd most likely be too delicate to operate - something like an O or G Scale signal would be perfect though. Thanks for watching 🤩

  • @johnhmccauley

    Could you make the design files available?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 месяца назад +1

      I have looked into it and I did a trial run by giving out some of the design files to friends who also have laser cutters. What we discovered was that, to get anything halfway decent, the files needed to be altered to suit the individual brands/model of machines and realistically I can't offer that support on a wider scale at this time. Most likely if I do ever make anything available going forward, it'll be as ready to assemble kits. Thanks for watching 🤩

    • @johnhmccauley

      Not looking for support. Size of bricks for TT etc… files as is would be useful.

    • @brucewoods9377

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuyI don’t see why the files would need an alteration that is “machine dependent” I take it your designs are created in “Lightburn? And most users are familiar with that software. Any “machine dependency” is taken care of through Lightburn’s “Settings” tab.

    Red light: this video and others are not even touching THE MOST IMPORTANT information about thise lasers: how many runing hours will it last? Is it 50 hours on 100% power and laser will degrade by 10-20-30%? Or maybe 1000 hours and you have to buy a new one? Whatbis the truth? This machie IS EXPENSIVE and laser replacement will kill the whole thing financially. Not mentioning this spec is unfair and i thinking like this: if they are not touching this subject that means the laser life time is shitty.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  13 дней назад

      I don't know what grand conspiracy you think is going on here but unless I ran this machine until failure (which could take years) it would be impossible to say for certain. Even then it would only confirm the result for this specific machine rather than the range as a whole.
      For what it's worth, I have one of the earlier Falcon 2 machines which uses the same type of laser module. That has regularly been run at 100% for over a year now and shows no signs of it degrading or losing power.
      It's worth noting as well that Creality have warranty and repair services and in a worse case scenario where the module is completely broken years down the line, you only need to buy a replacement laser rather than a whole new machine.
