I tried doing this, but for some reason, the edges of the letters are cut off just beyond the border. I don't know how to keep the edges of the letters round like yours.

If you want to do this with a shape (such as a square) you cannot use the contour tool. Just expand the shape and then use a stroke.
This is cool, but in my Ai, I couldn't find the contour tool.
