The Sgt. William H. Carney Memorial Homestead, 128 Mill Street was built circa 1855 by John W. Williams, an African American man who came to New Bedford from Norfolk, Virginia. This house was the home of John W. and Clara Williams and William H. and Susanna Carney. After the death of Susanna Carney in 1916, her daughter Clara owned the property until 1939, when it was purchased by Elizabeth Carter Brooks then sold in 1939 to the Martha Briggs Educational Club, Inc. Since then, the house has been used for the West End Day Nursery and club rooms for Martha Briggs Educational Club.
