Yep my family was there, and still, glad someone covered this, everyone wasn't struggling all the time, many blks in early D.C. were thriving entrepreneurs as early as the 1800s, some just out of slavery.
My Grandparents lived on Martha's Vineyard, so we visited every summer growing up. I still go up regularly, including last year. The Vineyard is my favorite beach destination and I'm so glad we live close enough to go anytime.
We need more visual references of our people. We all share a commonality of being Black in the Diaspora. Yet many of us have traveled different journeys.
i have been going to Martha's Vineyard since 2008. it is absolutely the greatest place i've ever been. i think about it everyday. and yes, there is still a large, thriving Black community of accomplished Black people there today. it is a different mindset on the island. it is all love. don't let "Our Kind Of People" fool you. that tv show is far from what the island truly is.
I was 9 years old in 1968, both parents worked at hospitals, mother a nurse, father in purchasing. Lived in an all black neighborhood but today it's a mixture of all races. I had a great childhood here in Miami Florida and truly miss those days.
You must be rich. When the Whites tore down little houses and rebuilt bigger/better it rose the property taxes up - making it almost impossible for average people to afford
@@lovemywife698 - I agree and we have to always keep that in the forefront of our mind. LOL never be without it. When you think other Wise. Oh it doesn’t exist, That’s when you find out the real deal an your devastated.
It’s worse, because back then, having a profession meant that you were at least acquainted well enough with Economics not to believe that “purchasing” made you “rich.” Today, despite all of the people who have graduated with degrees in Math, Science, & Education since 1968, ownership of capital among ADOS adults has steadily declined as non-investment purchasing & liability consumption have only increased. People bought into a false idea that you could be “in a class” by buying something big-while forgetting that it is only an asset IF it yields a return. So: LOTS of houses (owned by banks & not being rented out or leased) & LOTS of church buildings (no deeds, titles or dividends), & of course, a lotta cars-total liabilities that depreciate with use. Virtually 0.01 business ownership, business partnership, joint ventureship.
For years, Martha’s Vineyard has been a refuge for so many ostracized people throughout U.S. history: Black Americans, the deaf, Native Americans, mentally impaired, etc. The Vineyard is a special peace.
I saw a movie years ago with Hallie Berry planning her marriage to caucasian man. I believe it was Angela Bassett (?) portraying her mother. It was filmed on Martha's Vineyard. A Black Family struggling with colorism and other family issue. Dam good movie. Mike, Really would love to see this movie again here.
It was Lynn Whitfield playing her mother and it was a miniseries I think from Oprah Winfrey but it might be on dvd , blue ray or a streaming service! That was a good movie!
Chris Rock said it best, and I wholeheartedly agree with him, "I love Black people, but I hate them nigga's". Also, I understand what the brotha' at the end of the video is saying, but it comes down to this. Many are called, and few are chosen, you can't help someone who doesn't want to receive it...

Thank you. Some people think all black Americans live a life of constant struggle and some of our people are the main ones pushing this narrative.

Absolutely nothing wrong with us having our own, as we support our own on every level & in every domain

I totally agree
Anything on Chicken Bone beach, Reel Black? The beauty and class was unparalleled.
I have seen stills taken there. I’ll do the research. Maybe there’s home movie footage

Such beauty, class and distinction back then!!

Glad to see that they were places for black people to holiday and get a real break in peace without so much prejudice. Love it. Thanks for posting ❤
We were on The Vineyard in '68. Now that was great summer.
Damn....I wanna go back in time...
When you get ready, let me know. We're going too. 🏝

So wonderful to see these types of videos from back in the days 💞
I would love to purchase property in a community like this!
Me too

That is so not true- just because they were able to vacation and some of them purchasing homes, does not mean the negativity that he’s saying.
The negativity still exist.
Are we who work hard to get something supposed to stay minimize ourselves? Ridiculous.

I agree with the brother at the end. In fact you can argue it's the same today as it was then, if not worse.

Haven't read comments yet but I'll ask... Was the movie "The Inkwell" loosely based on this?
*HEY MIKE*
I know this has little to do with this video, but I’d love for you to upload the film ‘The Inkwell’ starring Larenz Tate and Jada Pinkett
I get the connection. The Inkwell is on Blu ray and dvd from Kino Lorber.

I had family on the Vineyard. I first visited in 1960. Haven't been there since 1990, so it must have changed.

I don’t believe it’s in our nature,it’s the controllers that continue the separation-because it is easier to control the masses
🎯I agree wholeheartedly!
White Americans made it about COLOR. If not wealthy Blacks would be able to join White elite country clubs but could not.
Nope it’s about color and only one group “HAS” and it’s not Black folks. These people were escaping racial prejudice at the hands of White Americans
