- Here's my standalone MAME emulation image for my PJ adapter. This minimalist image boots directly into the game with no boot messages. Ideal for pretending your cab has a real PCB inside. Check out pcbjunkie.net for more info on this project.
Just a correction to what I said in the video. AdvanceMAME is based on MAME 0.106 and it requires a romset aligned to that MAME version. I confused it with mame2003 based on version 0.78, which I also tested, but chose not to include in this image.
Useful also for people who own a rare board, but don't want to use it for preservation sake but still want a dedicated cabinet. Seems like this AdvanceMame is kind of like GroovyMAME. You should put version of AdvanceMame and mame rom set needed in description. I know you mentioned it, but for quick reference in description would be helpful. fyi he mentions using mame .78 rom set
Right, both have very good CRT support out of the box, both are standalone and very configurable, and unlike retroarch cores, they don't ignore their config settings. Good point about the romset, will be adding this to the documentation. I find AdvanceMame to be the fastest of the bunch on the Pi.

There are some shaders built into AdvanceMAME, including scanlines. Check out advanceMAME docs for more info.

I'm trying to use this for my custom centipede arcade. On my CRT I can't change the horizontal size for some reason. I use a cheap CRT (Scantic). In the service menu, everything but the horizontal can be adjusted. In my case, I use the CRT in vertical mode, which means that I can't see the top or bottom of the game. Is there a way to shrink the resolution in MAME?
Yes, you should be able to change the horizontal (vertical when looking at the centipede monitor orientation) resolution, but not from MAME. I suggest though that you keep the correct resolution and use a faster pixel clock to get pixels that are more narrow. Look in the script that launches mame for "auto resolution" code which sets the screen resolution before launching MAME, and change that to suit your needs.
@@pcbjunkie1Thanks for the answer. Is it possible to do that on my computer in the config.txt file? When I put the sim in the pi I can’t do anything. Not even go in the Tab menu as usual in MAME. If it’s possible in the config.txt file, what line do I tinker with? I tried some different lines but nothing did it for me. I didn’t find what u suggested.
That line in config.txt just sets the generic resolution for boot up. The screen resolution will be changed once again before mame is launched based on mame game data. You will have to do this from within linux. The linux partition is not visible in Windows.
Hi buddy, I've just ordered your adapter and downloaded your version "pj-1.0-standalone-rasplite-buster" which I installed onto a 32GB Micro SD, plugged into my Raspberry Pie 4B but it won't boot up? Reports its an old version and to download the latest version?
If I understand this correctly, your Pi4 (the most recent 2022+ revision) likely requires a newer kernel. Contact me via email, we'll get this sorted out.

Will this work without the Pi jamma adaptor? I’m thinking of putting a pi in an arcade cab to replace the board as it’s died, but it’s not jamma wired as it’s a Sega cab. Thanks.
Not without some tweaking. You'd have to disable the video and sound configuration and then reconfigure the controls for whatever you'd want to use as inputs.

Thanks for sharing this. How is the latency on the emulation? Do you notice any lag in the controller?
There is very little to no lag in the controls / os portion. There is probably a 2-3 frame lag in the emulation layer with retroarch emulators. It's almost undetectable, but it's there.
@@pcbjunkie1 Interesting. Have you tried using RunAhead Mode or Preemptive frames on the retroarch side? I know Final Burn Neo supports it. Not sure which mame cores do.

I love the simplicity of this image. Can/Will you make an image where we can put like 1-5 Roms in that folder and we can select the one we want? I don’t need 10,000 Roms, but to be able to put a handful in without having to keep switching the sd card would be awesome. Thank you for your time.
Yeah, probably will modify this image to make it cycle through the games in the directory with a button combination without any menus. For a simple one with menus I have another idea just need time to get to it.
Will your image work without your PCB? For example a regular pi hooked up to HDMI. I've been looking for a single rom image for just like this!

@@samhillier4427 The image won't work out of the box with HDMI. You'll need to disable DPI video in the boot config file and possibly some of the drivers. It's possible to make this work with some effort though.

Where do we purchase these from I haven’t seen them in you eBay store yet and I am definitely interested. On that note I have a lot of your Jamma adapters and have been recommending them every chance I get to people in the arcade communities definitely some great products and the best part is it’s on the right side of the border for me so shipping is cheaper and faster
