Finally a video that talks about important issues during/after finishing leather. I've watched 60+ videos and not a single person spoke about important issues. In my experience, when it comes to cracking and flaking antique you have to remove as much antique as possible. I use a toothbrush to apply antique and then I use a clean soft toothbrush to remove the antique. I leave as little as possible in the tiny tooling and stamping. Just don't overdo it. Plus when sealing over antique I use Tan Kote. Don't leave too much in the deep cuts or it will flake out. When the Tan Kote is basically dry after 5 minutes, try to remove the little pools of wet Tan Kote with sheep's wool shearling. Also never do more than 2 coats of Tan Kote. It will begin cracking.
I bought a "cheap" builders painting airbrush gun and use it exclusively for resist/resolene. Mix with a little water and it works great! Clean airgun will with water after use. It will clog up your small hobby airguns (learned the hard way)
I am curious why you are no longer using the RTC Resist as the first sealer before using the antique. I still like it the best especially for sealing my painted key rings or monograms on my belts.
I am making leather pet tags, so they will be put through the works. They are engraved and cut on a laser machine and I finish them with resolene and mink oil, but I want to provide customers a follow up product to clean and reseal their pets tag for continued durability. any suggestions? I was told Aussie Conditioner with beeswax. Do you agree or have another option?
You've got a tooled project, where you want to resist parts of the tooling to stop dye, for a two-tone effect. Then antique, and seal. What do you use when?
Joe , I tried to increase sheen on a couple of journal I built. In doing so I used saddle spray shellac over what I can’t remember. Either tan cote or resoline. Results where snake skin pealing. Will saddle lac penatrate tan cote or is it a no no?
verry good explaination on those finishes but one big question i still have is the difference between pro resist and resolene as in my eyes both are the same as in betrween resistance layers or finishing layers but there must be a difference could you pls answer me
Have you noticed any change in tan kote over your 17 years of leatherwork? I noticed it’s changed opacity and the description of the product on the label has changed.

Joe like what you do!
Hi Joe, thanks for this video, that's the detailed answer to my question 2 weeks ago👌👍
Hi Joe, love your videos, very informative. How do you recondition leather coated with acrylic paint and/or finished with resoline?
It would have been nice to see the Tan Kote side finished with Tan Kote instead of Resolene. It’s not a true comparison.
Hey Joe. I learn something with every single video you put out. Just a question. How would you finish chrome tan leather? Thanks
The chrome tan will usually have a finish on it so I don’t add anything to it. That’s all done at the tannery.
@@joemeling3216 thanks
@joemeling3216 I'm doing my cowboy boots and do I buff my boots after the dye dries before applying the resolene I could surely use your help
