- Hello friends! Unfortunately, we come bearing some sad news - our ancient ex-street-cat Crusty passed away a little while ago at the ripe old age of 21. So we decided to make a little memorial video for him here, as a celebration of his long, dusty life and how much he impacted ours. We met him back in 2015 on the streets, he was there when we started our channel - he judged my ugly clothing and lounged in a giant beanbag - and when we moved across the country, he came too. Tyler & I loved him like crazy, and we're gonna miss him like crazy - and we know that a lot of you guys will too.

"He's willing himself to keep going." I think it was because it became apparent to him that he found his people and doesn't want to leave yet. So he kept going as long as he could just to be with both of you.

Had the same feeling when the cat I'd had my whole life (as in my parents got her as a wedding present before I was born) died. When she breathed out I held my breath for a really long time not knowing what it would be like to breathe in a world she wasn't there.

I really feel that. My older cat (I have two), who we adopted when she was 3 months old, is very smart.
I came home one day feeling upset and just had to cry and she rubbed against my legs at first and then settled on my lap. I felt better almost instantly. She’s always up to something mischievous and I often complain about her antics but I really love her and don’t know what I’d do without her 😢
There was another cat named Dewey who lived in a small town library in Spencer Iowa in the 90's who was also a rescue like Crusty
And he ended up passing away in 2006 from a tumor.
There's a book on him as a joint project of another author and the librarian who raised him, that is to me, an extremely underrated bit of non-fiction
I know you said many times “I know it sounds silly”, but any pet owner know it’s now. They come into our lives and change them forever. We all loved Crusty and I’m so happy you had him in your lives

4 months later and I finally had the courage to watch this video. Waterworks as expected. Pets are never ‘just pets.’ We all know that. They are pieces of our hearts. Thank you for sharing Crusty with us and for giving him the best life.

Took me 7 months and I can't even listen to the sound. Knowing me 🥲. I'll get too emotional and stop it just to cry. It's just not easy when you lose someone or even a best friend like rusty 😞. I think about it every day with my cat even though it's 3. But time tends to fly and it feels like yesterday when we got him as a kitten. Now he'll be 4 since next year is almost here 😭

Same here! When she saw that awesome piece of art you can see that just hit her heart so hard and that's what hit me; I've been there many times over the years, it's never easy but it's always worth the pain since I know they had the very best with me.
You shouldn't apologize saying "it's just a cat". He's been a big part of your lives! Cats are just as much family as a human can be. He had a good run.

Pets are never "just a x". They're our family, our friends, our companions. They are a constant safe space and provide us joy, contentment, and love.
When my dog passed away, it ruined me for a few weeks. It was a natural, expected death and he went out in his usual considerate way (this was the kind of dog who would only poop near trashcans on walks; we never trained him to do this), and it was objectively an "easy" death. But my dog had been my rock and my home for so long, it was like losing a piece of myself. He was like my unofficial emotional support animal, who had gotten me through so much. My entire life upended when I lost him. He wasn't just a dog; he was my family.

I am so grateful for people like you two who have love in your hearts for an animal that a lot of people wouldn’t have wanted, simply because he was old, unhealthy (at first) and “Crusty”. I subscribed to your channel tonight just because of your love, compassion, and gratitude for Crusty. What a wonderful gift of love you both gave to him that he returned in full to both of you. People who criticized your coping mechanisms to handle Crusty’s deteriorating condition had no right to do that. Having a pet die is painful. Humor isn’t meant to be mean or spiteful; it’s so we can laugh, and that’s exactly what you did.

Laughing, is a very positive way to cope. She tried not to cry, to be positive and light. I don't think its wrong to cope that way, In fact, it's a very healthy way to cope. I don't think crusty would be happy, to see his parents crying and completely broken. Instead we should celebrate that his in heaven, playful, and exicted there. Its so nothing is sad, heartbreaking, and difficult.
I had a puppy named bella and we only had her for about 6 or 8 months but she still had an impact when she died i could not stop crying for like 1 month
Especially because people make stupid jokes (and often a little dark) about their own pets all the time !
Fr. The things like "how are you still alive" are simply coping mechanisms. I hate that people pretend they know exactly how you should be feeling and say when they've only seen glimpse of their lives through a screen. I lost a cat to a fatal disease. She was a strong little angel when she pushed through the "1 day left to live" up to a whole week and during the whole time I was just wondering things like how is she still alive when she's already so frail. It's all just to cheer yourself up. We know our relationship with our family more than anyone do.
Knowing Crusty waited until you guys moved and were situated; where he knew you would be okay, to find peace is just beautiful. He loved you guys so much. I've put this video off for so long and I'm still bawling like a baby..
Crusty was never just a cat. Crusty was the crustiest, grumpiest-looking little old man any of us could ever ask for. He deserved a whole documentary.

makes me sad that people feel the need to try to explain why they feel emotional when they lose a pet. The people that have never bonded with an animal will never understand it, but those of us who have loved and been loved in return by another creature will always understand wholeheartedly the feeling.

Absolutely. There's a lovely poem that is indeed about a dog. But tbh it applies to all pets it's called just a dog. And it talks about how dogs are special and people who say it's just a dog, Don't understand and Never will. It's a lovely poem.
The same sentiment can apply to a cat a rabbit or any animal. No animal is ever just a.... They're family, they're our furry friends and companions and sometimes all we have in the darkness.

My daughter turned me on to Saf about 3 years ago and I'm SO glad she did. It's an honor to feel like a part of THESE kinds of people. People can be better than you think. I've witnessed many acts of kindness in life done without a second thought.
I know that I'm a little late to the party, but this hit so close to home. When I was in kindergarten, we got a kitten. She made it through everything with me. About three months after I graduated from college, she passed away, about a month shy of her like 18th or 19th birthday. It's been almost ten years and I still think about her and I still miss her. They're not just a pet, they're a friend, they're family.

I just re-watched this and I can't stop crying. I hate the fact that Safiya felt like she had to say "it's just a cat" but honestly, if you've had a pet in your life, you know they are not "just an animal". They are family. Losing a pet will forever be one of the toughest losses a person can go through.

When she said the vet told us to put him down I started crying because it made me think about my two cats and how I know one is 12 weeks but the other one is 8 years. You never know how much time you have left or your animal has left. It’s hard to imagine life without my animals. So everyone cherish the time you have with someone, something, or an animal. Crying over pets should always be ok
What a sweet remembrance video. I did not know Crusty's origin story, or that you guys only had him for 6 or so years. You gave him what was probably the best years of his life. You can cherish that, knowing that he chose you to spend that time with. Both of my cats were strays, and chose me, and I think that makes me appreciate them even more. Having also lost numerous pets over the years, I can understand how hard it is to say goodbye. I loved seeing all the footage with Crusty, he lives on in the digital world.
About a year ago we lost a family cat. I broke so many traffic laws getting to the vet.
My brother wept so hard. One of the saddest memories was watching him angrily dig a grave.
But right before he died, he purred so loud and snuggled us both. He was a solid cat.
He wasn't just a cat. He was your family and a great friend. Pets choosing to live with and love us is a super special bond. I'm glad you guys got to have that.

It got me near the end, I lost my oldest cat last year pretty fast and I still hurt so of course when I saw how they reacted to the artwork I had some tears in my eyes as well.
While hearing Safiya voice cracking, my eyes started to water more.

Saf keeps saying that Crusty was "just a cat", but I didn't even know him and I'm crying. Cats are family too. They need love and care, and they give it back in their own way. You gave him an amazing life from the moment you met him, and he gave back to you however he could. I hope you get to meet again someday. Rest in peace lil dude ❤
I think she is saying that cause people with try to attack her with the argument of saying he was just an animal, we as humans forget we are just animals as well and that out existence is as worthy as their (cats, dogs, animals) existence.
exactly. I think the hardest thing for me to comprehend with the pet/human relationship is that our timelines are different, that’s about it. They love as hard as we do, they get as sad as we do, they’re a part of our families as much as any person (my mom considered our dog Mike a sibling 😂, she even called him Michael when he needed to be scolded and he definitely learned that when his “full name” was being used, he was in trouble). They’re so much more than an animal and I don’t think anyone who says otherwise has even been as attached to a pet the way I have been or the way Saf and Tyler are to Crusty

One thing I’ve learned over the years is it’s never “just a cat” it’s a best friend, it’s family. I’ve lost pet birds and while it seems so little from the outside, your relationship with crusty was deeper then we’ll ever know.

In 2015 our cat Magnus died after being ran over by a car. He meant so much to me and my sisters, he really was our little prince. I still miss him so much and I wish he were here still. ❤

My wife and I lost our cat of only 6 years yesterday. His name was Astro, he came to us when we had started dating as well, and he was the sweetest cuddle bug that only wanted to spend as much time as possible with his two moms. It hurts so much to come home and not see him there, but to constantly be reminded of where he used to be.
Watching this video helps us out a lot, focusing on the good memories and processing and accepting our loss. We've always loved your content and Astro would even sit on the couch with us while your videos were playing. I hope you know how much your content means to us.

I had a cat buddy for years, all through college. Then my family took him on when I couldn't bring him with me. He attached to my brother. At 15 he went over the rainbow bridge and I broke so many traffic laws getting to the vet where my brother wept.
Another time I sat with a friend whose 20 year old died that wept. They mean a lot.
Oh, just Tyler saying "byeeee" and Krusty perched up in the mezzanine looking down and replying "Mao" got me - my own cat Ruby (who used to put up with me teasing her by calling her "Booby") and, when her sister was alive, would then take it out on Rosie while I was gone out - returning to find chunks of Rosie's fur all over the hallway (don't feel sorry, the little bastards were as bad as each other)😂😂🥲🥲🥲🥲❤❤❤❤

There’s no such thing as “just a cat” Saf - he chose you, and he hung on as long as he could because he loved you both so much. Thanks for giving an old boy the love he deserved. As I was watching I said to myself, "I'm not gonna cry", but when it got towards the end, I couldn't stop crying. Crusty definitely found you as keepers. I had my cat Ariel from the beginning of her life until she passed away at 18 years old last September. I know and remember those changes and her coat getting matted. Thank goodness Crusty had the both you. A relationship like that can never be replaced. Most importantly, thank you for sharing when you were ready to do so. I was the same way...I lost my old lady cat (she was 20 years old, I got her just out of university) she was my constant companion for so long, through tons of moves, and relationships and all that life stuff, she went through the same stages that Crusty did, you guys were lucky to have each other and you have great memories (Safiya and Tyler also have the cool art piece)

I firmly believe the best cats are the ones that feel like they "cosmically" come to you. My cat had been in the shelter for less than 24hrs when I went to adopt. Had I gone the day earlier as I was planning she wouldn't have been there yet.

Loosing a cat or any sort of pet is equal to loosing a family member. People may disagree with that but it’s true. People can break down mentally when an animal that they love dies. I am so sorry about Crusty and know your pain, because I’ve had a cat that I love taken away from me and though he’s still alive it’s so unbelievably horrible. I also think it’s very brave for you to tell his story to millions of people on the internet since I know that must of hurt. No, he wasn't "just a cat." People with dogs always talk about how they're part of the family and more than a pet. Cats are that way too. They snuggle up into your heart the exact same way a dog does. All animals, all pets are more than pets. They have personalities and thoughts and feelings too. Crusty was a beloved soul who will be remembered by many.

Absolutely this. They are sentient beings and are never 'just a. . .' I lost my kitty-companion in 2009 after a painful bout of cancer, and no joke, it was just as bad as losing a person. Thankfully this is now starting to be acknowledged, that the loss is just as 'big' as losing anyone else in you're life. The animals are never 'just a. . .' at all. They are friends, family, companions, loved ones. Their thoughts and feelings count just as much as any other person in our lives.
Please don't feel the need to apologize or minimize how you feel about it. You two seem like you were awesome cat-guardians and took wonderful care of this little being and gave him a good life while you had him. He knew how blessed he was. Know that you did your absolute best by him and he knew it and appreciated it (cat style. :) ).

Same we lost our dog this past November and it was so unexpected (from one day being completely fine to four days later saying goodbye) and it is one of those things you never fully can comprehend until you go through it. Family but even more deep than that. They are like a part of us, a literal keeper of a piece of our hearts that we never fully get back.
When Saf said “I don’t know if we can do this without him…” I also got tears in my eyes because that is such a relatable feeling in that moment.
Crusty was, and still is, so incredibly loved and cherished. He was everyone’s cat. He gave Saf and Ty exactly what they needed, and got back the same in return. That stability, peace of mind, and unconditional love and attention. I’m so happy that Crusty and you guy’s paths crossed. He was the Crustiest of boys and the sweetest of dudes. Love you Crusty!!!

I never watched this video because as a truly lifelong cat lady. I thought it'd be too sad. And I was fucking right. It's obviously super late, but you still have my deepest condolences. The grief of losing a loved one never really leaves you. No matter how small or furry.
