HELLO FRIENDS!! and welcome to another episode of "what can i melt next" -- i hope you all enjoy this video, in which the melting becomes much more high stakes, lol. which of our new jewelry pieces was your favorite?? xoxo, saf
Day I don't remember of asking u to make a franken perfume or lotion, but mixing the products from different places, like bath and body works and Victoria secret or something. Please!
The sweet man and woman going "They're looking for silver, and they're on a roll" and "Alright!" sound so encouraging and adorable. If I could fit them in my purse and take them home with me, I would.
Just be aware that they were encouraging them to buy more things so they could get more money. Edit: since people are mad I said this I'll go ahead and say that this isn't even an attack to the people. That's literally what they were doing and I wasn't trying to demonize them. I'm just saying that they want you to spend as much money as possible. Don't try and read into this as something negative.
@@yeemawheaver1387 This was a thrift store, and some of these were very obviously run for charitable reasons. So if they got more money, good for them. It's a win win, both for Saf and Ty who got more stuff to work with, and for the small business who got more money.
Glassblowing might also be something to try! I've been itching to take a beginner's class, and the process looks so cool. You can make glass ornaments, decorations, charms, and a whole bunch of other things with a variety of colors. Would be really cool to see you try that!
The youtubers Evan and Katelyn just did a at home glass blowing kit (from the early 2000’s😅) but it looked super cool! Safiya might be able to try something like that too! (With a new kit of course). They made adorable little beads including like a peach emoji, mushroom and like 90’s fantasy spiky one.
@@lisahoshowsky4251 I don’t think what they did was glass blowing. Not an expert so I could be wrong but I think they just made glass beads. Isn’t glass blowing where you actually blow into hot glass to make a bubble?
There is a studio in Charlotte NC not too far from where they live that has make your own glass blowing classes! I did it and made a gorgeous wine glass!
This seems less Frankenstein and more Phoenix, it's like the jewelry is being reborn. And that would be an awesome name for a shop that did stuff like this.
If you asked me 27 minutes and 32 seconds ago if I thought green pea jewellery would be up my ally I would have had a very different answer to now. Those pieces turned out amazing! The finished pieces reminded me of coral at the beach. I loved the water drop studs too! So cute and dainty!

in Germany we call a smith who is making jewelry a Goldschmied, a goldsmith. Of course they also work with other metals, but it's rather seldom that they call themselves more specific a gold and silversmith or something. A jeweler or Juwelier is a person who sells jewelry or owns a jewelry shop, but is not a goldsmith. So I didn't know, that people use those terms interchangeably but you are right, those are completely different professions and require different skills and training.
@@Sunshine27234 at my school a goldsmith is someone who works with metal on a small scale (jewellery, pill boxes, small charms, etc...) and a silversmith is someone who works on a large scale, vases, teapots, cutlery etc...
@@tiki_riot true, some jewellers can also do basic repairs and cleaning, but it's mostly marketing and professional knowledge (don't want to drag them but at my school they're all expensive assholes)
Just so people know there's nothing wrong with rhodium plated silver for non casting purposes. Rhodium is more expensive than gold so you're not getting scammed and it just helps prevent tarnishing. If you want silver but not to polish and take care of it then rhodium plating is a great alternative.
@@katherinesheremeta9238 rhodium compounds are carcinogenic and the dust is flammable however when used in jewellery it is non recative and hypoallergenic. They didn't want any rhodium plating here because it has a different melting point along with the potential for harm as they're not equipped to properly handle it. I was just letting people know that when buying jewellery rhodium plating isn't a negative, it just wasn't suitable for melting down in this case.
They seemed like lovely teachers too! I was a little worry by pretty intense fear of fire would make this video impossible for me to watch, but their presence assured me quite a bit.

@WhisperingGypsies This video shows basic metalsmithing techniques in an informative way. Is your point that every metalsmith in the world and their produced jewellery is racist for doing an artform that was around even before the big slave trade? Like tf?
@@bethdavisjimenez your user name is a slur, and I looked it up - copper was worn and used as MONEY by many cultures. Thanks for telling me to look it up. You’re wrong.
As a goldsmith it makes me happy to see this! I learned from a very traditional mentor so it never occurred to me to cast abstract shapes in random objects, we just went straight to lost wax casting, so I loved to learn something new from your video even after 10 years of doing this. Also happy that you're bringing attention to this super fun profession!
It's so fun to see!! I've wanted to try out this profession for ages and see if it's something I like/can do. But I also always pictured it the traditional way, so seeing all these cool techniques made me want to try it EVEN MORE! :D
Same! I studied goldsmithing and am currently doing a bachelor in jewellery design. In neither the traditional goldsmithing or the liberal arty farty jewellery design studies did we see these kinds of things. It’s the kind of thing that is too simple to be taken serious by mentors, but looks awesome to anyone else and is really rewarding to do.
I know. I’m a goldsmith. I’m in awe every time I make shiny things go red and glowy with the power of fire in my hand. It’s damn hard though. Especially the soldering bit is usually a big roadblock.
As a jeweler, this is extremely exciting and I'm glad you found metalsmithing fairy godmothers to help you through the process and make sure you weren't melting down any unsafe mystery alloys. Some notes if you are going to keep making jewelry in the future (which you absolutely should!): it's best not to quench your pieces right in the pickle after soldering/heating. It can expose you to unnecessary fumes. It's best to quench them in some plain old water first. And, the brass brush will give you the best finish if you use it wet, with some dish soap, and you brush forwards in one direction. I hope you had fun!
Hi Rebecca. Quick question, if you don't mind me asking. I'm a beginner and I want to primarily make jewellery with stainless steel because it's waterproof and all of that. Do you know if I can melt stainless steel the same way as with sterling silver? Could I melt stainless steel AND sterling silver together? I'm having a hard time figuring out
@@bethdavisjimenez arent they going for sterling silver not copper i just googled slave bracelets to see what it is and google says its made out of copper
She’d probably break all the pottery to make grog for new pieces without bothering to check if ANY of those might POSSIBLY be worth something because they were ANTIQUES. This video is offensive. That bracelet with the balls on the end was an ANTIQUE. I was given an identical almost FIFTY YEARS AGO.
@@tanial.williamson8082 it’s old metal, unless it has any real historical significance it doesn’t matter. Also it was all in a thrift store so I think this was the best thing that would happen to the jewelry.
@@tanial.williamson8082 funny how no one cared about those pieces of jewelry in the thrift store until she used them to create items that are now more wearable and have a neat history. we put value on the silliest of things; time will pass no matter how hard we try and preserve it
I'm a jeweler and metalsmith and I was having a small heart attack for you early in this video. Thank you for checking the karat stamps, thank you for consulting with experts (THANK GLOB THEY TOLD YOU ABOUT POT METAL AND PLATING. The fumes can be dangerous. Honestly a little surprised they didn't acid test any of the pieces, but some jewelers get a really good eye for identifying silver) and especially thank you for highlighting that it wasn't easy! Metal work can be extremely difficult and dangerous, and a lot of the poor/misleading metal casting videos not only risk people's health, but devalue jeweler and metalsmith skills - I've had lot of people balk at a 50 dollar repair price tag because they saw how "easy" it was online ( like many of the arts, not realizing that jewelry work takes thousands of hours of training, sometimes a college degree, as well as 10,000 plus dollars in equipment for the SIMPLE stuff) Anyone can learn these skills, and its so fun and rewarding to make jewelry and metal sculpture. Thank you for doing it right. This was so refreshing. I hope this helps to show anyone who wants to get started how to do it right! (without burning themselves or their house down)
I agree with how people seem to think art and making of any kind is super easy and we are just ripping them off. Peopl have thought like this, but modern days with tutorials online that are edited just seem to make it worse. They watch an hour of videos and go “that is so easy. I can’t believe they charge so much”. They do not realize the mass amount of time that goes into these works. Also the videos that state “i made this for only $10” i dont believe help either. Cause , yes, they may have spent minimal on supplies for that challenge, but they do not account cost of time, material and equipment that they already own. Plus for most people, only spending $10 is not normal. So most people watching thinking that is how much everything cost and makers just sell at outrageous prices. And then they harass people online selling for normal prices thinking they are making a huge profit. It is such a catch 22 because i think it is very helpful to have these tutorials online and have people learning this stuff, but it also hurts makers because normal consumers do not understand the work and skill that goes into it. And they think it is so easy and cost the makers almost nothing to make.
I was going to add these points. So many pieces of metal are stamped 925 but are not. I have been making pieces for 20 years and it’s not an easy task and it’s so very expensive to get started.
@@nikkafrog this is a very valid point, and maybe the people who make these tutorials should have a disclaimer at the beginning that says that metal casting is absolutely not easy or generally cheap, and that being able to make thing for super cheap is already coming from the perspective of someone who has invested in necessary tools and years of experience, which cost significantly more than 10 dollars. That said, it's kinda impossible to have this at the beginning of every or even most videos as it would be repetitive to most frequent viewers. And you couldn't guarantee that some random person happen to watch the three videos where you didn't say that and now think it's easy and cheap. I honestly think the biggest issue is people lacking some amount of common sense - like it stands to reason that if someone is a professional at something, or has taken years to become proficient at it, it is a difficult skill. Especially when that skill involves blowtorch and pouring literal hot metal. Unfortunately most people just don't seem to consider this, or think that watching an hour of videos makes them adequately knowledgeable about any one thing when it obviously never could. That isn't really the creators fault, it's just a weird thing people do because we live in a world where we have so much access to info and so much of it is being thrown at us all of the time. Spending more than30 minutes on any one topic can make us feel like we have a proficient understanding of it. There also seems to be an inherent bias towards the arts in general like you said, maybe because it is tactile and so it's hard to get a good idea of what it is actually like doing that thing through a screen. And that disconnect, combined with professionals making it looks easy because they've been doing it for years, makes it comes across as easy to people. Whereas with like math and science which people generally accept is difficult, you can engage with it through a screen because it's more intellectual, so people try and fail and know it's hard to do. Many people have also never attempted making or tactile crafts like metal working so they have even less experience with it and less ability to know the nuances of why its difficult.
I think it’s so cool that you went in and shopped at a local thrift shop, that older gentleman behind the counter seemed delighted that you guys were there! “They’re on a roll!” ❤️❤️❤️
My husband and I did a course like this to make our wedding rings for each other! Highly recommend! We didn’t use a crucible or pour anything but the cutting, flux, torch, solder, and acid bath look very familiar!
This actually seems like it's the perfect transit video into a new series. From what can Saf melt, to what can Saf learn. Like learning the boba and now melting. I want to watch you learn to do more specialty things.
That’s it i’m making my own wedding ring, taking it to like, pandora or something, and telling the employee not to stop until they sell it to my partner so that they propose to me with a ring i designed myself.
Nice! I made myself two rings out of my parents' wedding bands. One was cast into a simple half round band, and the other I made into thick square wire forged into a circle, with a hammered texture. I figure if one is ever lost or stolen, I still have the other!
As an art teacher I love how you made this video, getting two professional artists onboard to help you and exposing so many people to this art form! I hope you make more videos like this!
I always love to see "unusual" or not so talked about art activities and how people express themselves through so many different artistic endeavors and it really opens my eyes to how wide the art world is and how beautiful it is. I'm the drawing type of artist, but throughout school one of my favourite art classes were definitely the ones were we explored various art forms like crafting, punch needle, knitting, etc.
As a young goldsmith I must say, well done! I remember doing these things for the first time. Especially the soldering is hard. It’s all pretty complicated and dangerous stuff. I’ve burnt my fingers on hot metal before. The burn was white. Do not ever try at home, people.
Also, just to get this out there: if you see fun videos about smelting any other kind of metal in any way: don’t get ideas. Alluminium’s poison, brass explodes, tin does weird stuff, gallium…gallium… Okay, you can try gallium. Wash your hands because it’s slightly bad for your skin or something and have fun. I know I shouldn’t have to say this, but don’t play with hot metal. The internet doesn’t say this enough.
Is it typical for metalsmiths to not wear heat resistant gloves for protection when working as shown in this video? As a chemist, I am cringing at the lack of heat resistant gloves and appropriate gloves for the acid bath.
@@eugenemetayhas yes, this is typical. The acid bath is diluted, so you should be fine with washing your hands if it comes in contact with the skin. Some older versions of the acid we use can decolour your clothes though. It may sound dumb to a chemist, but you really really can’t pause every step of the way to put on safety gear when making something artistic. We have tools to avoid touching it all. Heat resistant gloves are sometimes used, but it’s rare and only when smelting and casting, but again, if your hands come near the dangerous stuff there, you’re doing it wrong. The situation I burnt myself in was when I cast something very solid and didn’t cool it down any longer than I would something smaller. Second degree burns on two fingers. However, if I had put on gloves, they would have been off already, because I couldn’t even heve picked up the piece of metal with them on. Soldering though…that stuff’s a whole different can of beans. Your hands and face are always up close and personal with fire and hot stuff, but doing fine work like that would be impeded by nylon gloves, let alone heat-resistant ones. It’s not an option. I have to admit that, here again I’m an example of stupidity. I got frustrated and stressed from a regular, run of the mill attempt at saving a day of work, and because I stopped paying attention, I soldered something and tried to pick it up…without tongs. Then there’s the many cuts one needs to get to learn not to put your fingers IN FRONT of the saw, even when there’s no other convenient place to hold the thing you’re sawing. It doesn’t cut all that deep, but it can get deep enough to bleed and gets metal sawdust in the wound (which sounds worse than it is). As I did say, it’s dangerous stuff, but it’s no science lab, it’s a workshop where you’re making very small stuff. You have to feel everything you can, because your eyes aren’t enough. Routine is also a creativity killer, so you need to keep it…exciting I suppose. So no, limited safety procedure usually, just a slowly trained amount of common sense.

I’d really like to see a video where Safiya sews her own outfit. After the wedding dress and seeing the pretty jewelry I would be curious what kind of outfit she would make.
@@safiya I definitely think you could; but if you wanted to start somewhere smaller why not try embroidery? You could embroider your cat or a Star theme (or both) and then turning that embroidery into a purse or makeup pouch. On the one hand, the antique lover in me is sad to see pieces that could have a story get melted, but I also love the fact that we can repurpose unwanted jewellery into something we really love instead of using new metal. A fascinating and fun video for sure, that has satiated my inner pyromaniac haha.
@@WhimsyCottage I've been so obsessed with these since I was a kid - my heart leapt when I saw that one! My grandma had them, and I truly thought they were magical. 😊
I've been waiting for your to try silver smithing! I love water casting and casting into dried food, I've used lentils, but not peas before. The pieces you made look amazing! You'll love sand casting and try cuttlefish casting too. You saw the cuttlefish in half and carve the soft interior or press an object into it to make a mould, the texture you get from it looks so pretty.

i got my degree in metalsmithing so this was so cool to see and really takes me back. you caught on way quicker than i did! silver solder melts at almost the same point as silver does, so for the longest time it would take me so long to solder because i was TERRIFIED of melting my piece. as soon as it started going red i would pull off and fail. a really great teacher helped me get over that. i'm glad you had the right teachers too! all your pieces turned out so cool and organic and wonderfully tactile. the large water drop pieces remind me of oysters

Science-Fact: The flame turned green (18:25) because of the copper in the alloy. 92.5% silver means that there is 7.5% other metals in it and normally it´s copper. During flame coloring, energy in the form of heat is added to the material and thus bound electrons of the atoms can be raised to a higher energy level. When jumping back to the lower energy level, the excess energy is emitted in the form of light.
I love that you got professional help for this! As someone who is just finishing their 3.5 year apprenticeship as a goldsmith it makes me really sad when people promote high end jewellery that isn't made by small buisnesses but rather large companies that produce somewhere else, most of the time not in safe environments. Influencers usually don't show how cool, adventurous and traditional making jewellery is. They only show the finished product and goldsmiths don't benefit from it at all. It is honestly a dying profession. So thank you for giving that spotlight and hopefully inspiring people!
As a doll collector who specifically likes vintage barbies I nearly DIED when I saw that 90s 30th anniversary barbie reproduction of the 1959 black and white bathing suit barbie at 3:02 seriously that's a holy grail find!
It's definitely not an egg cup: it's a single candlestick holder. The top part was to hold a glass sconce to protect the candle from drafts so it would burn evenly and smokeless. How do I know? I have two of the same which were my mother's.
Im a second year jewellery design student and this video makes me so happy. Im so excited to see my future career displayed on an amazing channel like yours. Thank you so much❤️
As someone who primarily charity shops I think this is a wonderful and generous idea. Many people turn the stores down but another man's trash is another man's treasure. Keep it up!
Fun fact: in Finland, it's a new years tradition to melt down some tin, cast it in water and "predict" the following year's fortune from the shape the tin takes in the water. Some say that you're also supposed to look at the shadow that the tin also takes. The shapes at 16:02 look like a flower to me, which means happiness and family celebrations! The flat shape also means that you are going to be lazy and the leaflike shape means receiving news or messages.
It's so cool ! I'm fascinated by the different ways of predicting the future. Besides cartomancy or tea leaves or palm reading, there are so much interesting versions in every country !
In Poland people use candle wax for it! Easier to melt XD They also pour it into the water through the "eye" the old keys sometimes have. To add more power to the prophecy.
I would love to see Saf and Ty try more creative mediums! It was great to see a “how it’s made” video, from an outsiders perspective, showing all the little steps that someone else might edit out to fit in a tiktok. You guys always make such fun, educational and honest review videos and I’d LOVE to see more like this one ☺️❤️
I’m a silversmith and this video was very well done! Your explanations were perfect and you did great for your first time! Love to seeing awareness brought to the universities too! Most people don’t know you can get a degree in metalsmithing!
My jaw DROPPED. JFC, Safiya just keeps taking these farther and farther. But wow, jewelry? Metal casting? That’s crazy difficult and takes so, so much learning and commitment. She’s the one person on the internet who we all kind of wish we could be and who does the crazy stuff we wish we can do, but no one else can really do it.
I worked at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's metal shop before the pancetta. I wasn't planning on re-applying but, this video may have inspired me to work there again
OMG, I used to work in a charity shop and sorting through the jewellery was a nightmare 😫, I used to take a photo on my phone and zoom in to see the writing sometimes cause it was so feckin small 😅
I did that once when the new £1 coins came out - I wanted to see if I could capture every detail! For the record, I'd managed to get such a good shot that zooming in meant I could physically read the laser engraved writing around the edge... not bad for a phone camera 😆
As a metals student, it’s so cool to see things that I recognize in this video. I love that I finally don’t have to just live vicariously thru Saf on this one! :D
In some European countries we melt tin and cast it in water on new years eve, whatever shape comes out is a prediction for the next year. Not literally like a clam shell meaning you get a clam shell, but in symbolistic meanings. Would be kind of fun to do it with silver sometime and make jewellery out of predictions.
I'm attending a Goldsmith/Silversmith school and it's so fun to see Saf trying out/learning the stuff I do everyday! She did so well and the results were amazing! I'd love to see more videos of Safia working with metal :)

I'm guessing that they figured since they were only going to melt sterling, a regular surgical mask would be good enough to block the fumes from flux. that said... dropping still hot metal straight into a pickle (acid bath) made me cringe a little. it was a HUGE no-no at my school in part because of the fumes and in part because of potential acid splashes. we were always taught to quench in water bath first and then drop cooled piece into a hot pickle (and it needs to be hot in order to clean your pieces efficiently, cold WILL eventually do it, but it will take forever) and I mean... ok I have seen people go straight for the pickle anyways, but I'd also seen people use electric rolling mills or flexshafts (calling it a dremmel in a vid was a bit funny, but then again, people call any and all tissues - kleenex) without putting all of their hair away.... people can be pretty reckless... I just never forgot our silversmithing teacher being super strict about use of PPE because she was partly blind in one eye because she decided not to wear protective glasses while filing one day early in her career... god, all this going down the memory lane and watching Safiya have so much fun is making me want to make jewelry again...
the NC state crafts center has reallyyy good ventilation (specifically for big-mama-blowtorching), so thats why we were able to cast indoors just like that, but in terms of the gloves -- i just followed sarah & suijin's lead!!
I am in love with the fact that her more recent videos of going outside and trying stuff with businesses gives me Jenna marbles vibes. Like Saf just wants to show us herself doing things she wants to do. Like if Jenna wanted to go outside and do something I picture it being stuff like this. Thank you saf for filling a void I didn’t know needed to be filled.

Honestly, if I just saw those pieces randomly in a store, I would think they are kinda ugly, but after seeing how they are made, they all have a special beauty to them. I like the ring the most. Third time watching this video. Very enlightening, educational, intriguing, and entertaining. I could watch you melt things together all day. We hope whoever reads this stays happy and healthy!❤*
Reminds me of the jewelry making class I took in high school - only 1 sterling silver piece and it was like the only class in high school I had to pay to be a part of [due to the silver]. I still have that ring though it's much too big on me now lol. But man I kept seeing those little pieces they turned into earrings and going "Eh they're okay" but then seeing them on Saf and actually getting to see their scale and all that, they're my favorite piece other than the suspended necklace. Something just so elegant about their simplicity!
That little horse looks like the Sterling silver one I lost in Raleigh in the 1990s it was my favorite necklace I ever had. It would be so weird if it was mine.

Hello Saf, I just wanna say you’re my favorite RUclipsr and I love your videos!
The sweet man and woman going "They're looking for silver, and they're on a roll" and "Alright!" sound so encouraging and adorable. If I could fit them in my purse and take them home with me, I would.

Edit: since people are mad I said this I'll go ahead and say that this isn't even an attack to the people. That's literally what they were doing and I wasn't trying to demonize them. As a metalsmith with a degree, it made me sooooooo happy to hear you call them 'metalsmiths' and not just 'jewelers'.
"Is there anything you like?" "Melting stuff.." "Is there anything you dont like?" "Stuff that doesnt melt."
in Germany we call a smith who is making jewelry a Goldschmied, a goldsmith.
I thought jewellers just sell the jewellery? Goldsmiths/metalsmiths make the jewellery?

Just so people know there's nothing wrong with rhodium plated silver for non casting purposes. Rhodium is more expensive than gold so you're not getting scammed and it just helps prevent tarnishing. If you want silver but not to polish and take care of it then rhodium plating is a great alternative.
thanks for this info!!
from what i know rhodium is a carcinogen so maybe they didn't want to fw it
@@katherinesheremeta9238 rhodium compounds are carcinogenic and the dust is flammable however when used in jewellery it is non recative and hypoallergenic. They didn't want any rhodium plating here because it has a different melting point along with the potential for harm as they're not equipped to properly handle it. I was just letting people know that when buying jewellery rhodium plating isn't a negative, it just wasn't suitable for melting down in this case.

(without burning themselves or their house down)
I would never assume for a second this is easy. I have so much respect for the craft and anyone who can do it, let alone do it well
I agree with how people seem to think art and making of any kind is super easy and we are just ripping them off.
I have been making pieces for 20 years and it’s not an easy task and it’s so very expensive to get started.
metalsmith myself and I was literally thinking the same things as you going into this vid haha

Also, just to get this out there: if you see fun videos about smelting any other kind of metal in any way: don’t get ideas. Alluminium’s poison, brass explodes, tin does weird stuff, gallium…gallium…
Okay, you can try gallium.
I’m very glad when she said she was getting professionals to supervise😅 I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little concerned up to that point🙈
racist

I'm a goldsmith student in the Netherlands and it's so cool to see people trying this stuff out for the first time, I really got some good inspiration from this hahaha
Wat gaaf! Waar studeer je?
Saf needs a whole trying artisan crafting with professionals in that field series
Yesss I love this idea!
She needs to make artisans cheeese
Pottery, blacksmithing, glassblowing, spinning wool and weaving on a loom... so much potential! Good idea.
As an alumni of NC State who frequented the craft center, it was so nice to see you visit and use the space. I miss it so much!!
13:10 That ‘How’s your arm, sweetie?’ Tyler said is the cutest thing to me.
I was looking for this comment!
awe, i didn’t even notice! they’re so cute together
i need me a man like that fr 😩😩
I was about to comment that! they are so cute together!😩
I WAS WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO SAY THIS
I’d really like to see a video where Safiya sews her own outfit. After the wedding dress and seeing the pretty jewelry I would be curious what kind of outfit she would make.
I think Micarah Tewers would be a great supervisor for that one ! Two differently chaotic forces coming together 💥
Omg if she made a Frankendress out of dresses from a thrift store!!
Technically she did do that before when she was at Buzzfeed. It was I think part of a Ladylike video. But I wouldn't mind seeing her do it again 👀
its on my list!! i wish i was good enough to attempt like some "project runway challenges" or something lol
@@safiya I definitely think you could; but if you wanted to start somewhere smaller why not try embroidery? You could embroider your cat or a Star theme (or both) and then turning that embroidery into a purse or makeup pouch. It would get you used to patterns, you’d learn sewing techniques, and you’d learn the skills to make an amazing project runway outfit on a smaller and more manageable scale.
As someone who thrifts a lot, it's honestly so cool to see that jewelry get the glow up it deserves.
Yeah! Most of it if out of fashion by a lot and wouldn’t be worn anymore. Now it can be fresh and cool.
I NEVER Find "real" silver in the 2nd hand stores its always usually just costume really THEY GOT SUPER LUCKY!!!
As a once high school student who took jewelry classes, this was awesome to watch! I also sent this to my jewelry teacher who was very impressed❤️
SHES EVOLVING…..fashion….then makeup…then candles…..then cakes…..then art….then soaps….now jewelry. WHEN DO WE SEE SAFIYAS FINAL FORM 😰 (i’m betting next phase is diy wigs idk i’m calling it now)
DIY merkin next 😂
I saw someone make a wig out of rainbow acrylic yarn. They brushed it out and you could t even tell it was yarn.
Bet its carpet making
Hopefully not humans next
I would love to see Saf attempt to dye a wig some cool colors
safiya's jewelry came out gorgeous!!! the matte/shiny texture was a perfect decision

On the one hand, the antique lover in me is sad to see pieces that could have a story get melted, but I also love the fact that we can repurpose unwanted jewellery into something we really love instead of using new metal. A fascinating and fun video for sure, that has satiated my inner pyromaniac haha.
I think the knife is from the Atomic starburst collection and i was really glad to see it made it out alive!
I mean... they were in a pawn/thrift/charity shop anyway... their original owners obvs didn't think they had any value...
@@WhimsyCottage I've been so obsessed with these since I was a kid - my heart leapt when I saw that one! My grandma had them, and I truly thought they were magical. 😊
The earring would have also been really cool as a minimalist ring too! But they all look so cool!!
Imagine being able to say to someone, "I melted it myself." This is so cool!
Wow this is a smart and talented dog
I was thinking of you when Saf was soldering! Love your pieces :)
Just a heads up, though, cuttlefish casting smells awful
Why is the silver gold-looking after the water casting?
@@hgdellinger it’s tarnish
REALLLLY wanna see Saf does this again with the molds! She could create a bat ring or pendant. Maybe even add some jewels? This was SO COOL and I want to do it myself immediately lol.
i got my degree in metalsmithing so this was so cool to see and really takes me back. you caught on way quicker than i did! silver solder melts at almost the same point as silver does, so for the longest time it would take me so long to solder because i was TERRIFIED of melting my piece. as soon as it started going red i would pull off and fail. a really great teacher helped me get over that. i'm glad you had the right teachers too! all your pieces turned out so cool and organic and wonderfully tactile. the large water drop pieces remind me of oysters
It’s crazy how much the metal changes with each step. Gold to white to silver
Yeah, it's so cool!
it’s not melting but stained glass would be pretty cool!

Awful
and mosaic work!
There is a Finnish new years tradition where you melt down tiny horse shoes made of tin and water-cast them to predict the new year :) I think it's a common thing in some Scandinavian countries too.
It's a European tradition 😉
As another person mentioned, it's definitely a european thing, cause it's a tradition in Germany too
@@ganbaluna
Did you actually get tin ones still, this year? I could only get those ridiculous wax substitutes, which yielded very fragile, disappointing results.
What a scam.
@@raraavis7782 I found them on Amazon pretty easily. Only the lead ones got banned (because of the toxicity), but tin is still fine and being sold (at least online)
@@emmik1584
Yeah, I probably should have looked earlier. I'm used to just buying them locally a day or two before New Year's Eve. But this year, I went to several drugstores, a department store and an Asian grocery store and found nothing.
Will definitely get proper ones again next year. I collect the little tin figures from my melts and I'm super sad, I don't have one for 2021 now.
I love that you and Tyler use your influencer powers for good. Let me explain…it’s not just all “look at how I organized my closet” “here’s my ikea haul” “let’s shop together” you are actually giving us you’re real life experiences which is so dope I e always wanted to do this!! And plenty other things that you guys show us. It’s neat to watch you use your powers for real life wholesome memories and experiences! Love you guys sm!
“I like to melt stuff, and I dislike things that don’t melt” -Frank Jr.
as someone who does silver and goldsmithing, it makes me so, so happy to see people trying it for themselves, even if it's a one-off masterclass, and it's amazing how accessible it's becoming on a more in-depth level :D i love all your melting things together videos, but i'm not personally into makeup, so this particular level really warmed my heart! i really hope you go back and try this again - it's so much fun!
Thank you! I was trying to pull out my memories from chemistry class to guess what metal was giving the green flames.
Well you better pack up now and find it
The holy grail would be finding a real vintage swimsuit Barbie at a thrift shop (at a thrift shop price).
This is so cool (or, technically, hot!) I especially love that ring.
Omg Whitney!!! I love your channel ♥️
Don't read my profile.........
I didn't know you watch Safiya too 😄
I think that “candlestick holder” is actually an egg cup for eating eggs. That’s why the top comes off for cleaning.
That’ sounds like an amazing tradition.
Same in Estonia 🙂
Same in Germany!
It's so cool ! I'm fascinated by the different ways of predicting the future. Besides cartomancy or tea leaves or palm reading, there are so much interesting versions in every country !
In Poland people use candle wax for it! Easier to melt XD
They also pour it into the water through the "eye" the old keys sometimes have.
The flower ring turned out soo pretty! I imagine if you put a gem inside the bigger flower, it'd be absolutely stunning!

Not gonna lie, the "frozen pea" idea sounded not so good to me, but the end result had me mind blown😍
I’m a silversmith and this video was very well done! Your explanations were perfect and you did great for your first time! Love to seeing awareness brought to the universities too! Most people don’t know you can get a degree in metalsmithing!
The way Tyler calls her sweetie and asks her if her hand is fine is so sweet
My jaw DROPPED. JFC, Safiya just keeps taking these farther and farther. But wow, jewelry? Metal casting? That’s crazy difficult and takes so, so much learning and commitment. She’s the one person on the internet who we all kind of wish we could be and who does the crazy stuff we wish we can do, but no one else can really do it.
Cause it's expensive lol
Love Saf repping local businesses, these lovely ladies and the boba shop. Need more content like this please❤️
This is one of the biggest reasons I love Saf.
Safiya has an odd penchant for exposing herself to potentially harmful vapors. My role model
And why didnt you just take a magnifying glass instead of torturing yourself???
I did that once when the new £1 coins came out - I wanted to see if I could capture every detail!
For the record, I'd managed to get such a good shot that zooming in meant I could physically read the laser engraved writing around the edge... not bad for a phone camera 😆
I think it's amazing how Safiya's channel is slowly evolving into Mythbusters-level creations and I'm here for it.
I totally agree with that. cheers
which european countries?

I make sterling silver jewelry, and after watching this video, I tried melting down some of my scrap and making a ring. It totally worked! Thanks for the video. 😁

Awful
very brave
The industry is more regulated in some countries than it is in others.
But yeah melting mystery alloys 😬😬😬
And she didn't have gloves 🔥 ouch.
I mean... back when I was in school we absolutely did use ppe, I still have a respirator from those days.
Yes! I'm definitely getting 32 year old lady vibes (even though I'm sure Saf is younger)
This was awesome! Those pea necklaces came out SO cool. I'd totally buy something like that. Really hope she does a part 2 or makes a series out of this.
13:10 Tyler calling Saf sweetie is so heartwarming🥺. I've always had an interest in hand crafts and hand labour? like silversmith and glass blowing but unfortunately, I am extremely clumsy and I would def lose a limb 😅. glad I could live my dream vicariously through you.
I love how saf’s channel just feels like a bucket list xD
This was surprisingly informative - as in I didn’t expect to learn as much about metalsmithing as I did in this video lol. Thanks for always being creative, wild, and sneakily educational
I took Metalcrafts in high school, so this brings back memories and makes me want to try this and see if I recall how to be a metalsmith or If I need a refresher course. I remember how cool it was and I also still have many of the items I created!

Wow, those are some fancy thrift stores. I think the most memorable thing I've ever found at a thrift store was 6 different wheelchairs all lined up in a row. And a bunch of carpets shoved into a cardboard box.
Anyone notice she’s wearing the key necklace that Cristine gave her it’s so cute
Aww I didn’t notice that 😭 so sweet. I hope we can see a video with them together soon. But who knows with the way world is going. They’re such an iconic duo!
I was going to say that to!!! So cute! Love to see some real friendship
I love this. Second hand shopping, recycling, supporting NC artists. Thanks for the video, Saf!
