One important aspect you missed to cover is that most victims initially find the proposal suspicious but they would start out with a small amount of money to test the platform. Great Reporting and I always admire news reporters like you who are so brave and fearless in digging into the truth and exposing scammers. I am really curious how you deal with those underlying fears and potential life thefts that you may receive from those criminal organizations? I am that type of person always afraid of becoming a target to those gangs. Love to hear your thought on that, which may gave people like me who are struggling to face the bad guys.
Thank you for your comment! We work in teams to look out for each other. We were also driven by the desire to raise awareness of such love scams, so that less people would fall for them. If you enjoyed the video, do like and share too! - Cheryl Tan, Producer
One thing for women to keep in mind when a seemingly-perfect Tinder "match" becomes interested in them: what do you have that they would look at you? And why would these "successful" men be on Tinder where eligible women would practically be throwing themselves at them? This is not to insult anyone. Rather, a relationship needs both parties to pull their weight. A rich, charming and successful man would fall for a downtrodden and lonely woman only in fairy tales. If more women would be honest with themselves, the number of victims would drop significantly.
Same goes for the other gender but men tend to keep silent out of embarrassment. I personally know a handful of men who fell for the cryptocurrency scam. And they still believe they were scammed by a heartless golddigger and not a fat dude in an overcrowded callcenter. Other two i warned them about it. Men feel like being ripped off if they take a lady out and pay fot her coffee but don't even blink in throwing hundreds and thousands to a photoshoped intagram model.
I wish the lady doesn't beat herself up too deeply. Many fall for deception good-looking scammers. They are capable and has mastered the psychological manipulation techniques on those vulnerable victims. Learn from it and move on. Please don't judge her for being "stupid" because she is not alone ! This scammer is professional and he played with her heart and emotions. He make her believe they are really care and love each others! I applause for her courage and willing to share this education information that make us more vigilant!
It's not as simple as just giving them money though they're thinking they're investing. People need to realise investing into random crypto platforms is NEVER a good idea.
As a Cambodian, I can confirm those silent buildings are full of scammers. Most of them were scammed to work under scamming company too. In Cambodia, they scam us by saying "Get money from playing game" and soon you have to create account to deposit money. but so far your money has all be gone in one night too

Here in Indonesia...we lost almost 10 billion Singapore dollar annually from scamming, online gambling etc..as online gambling, casino and scam is prohibited in Indonesia...Most syndicates operate online gambling from other country (same as mentioned in the video). The impact is not only on the victims but also includes human trafficking from Indonesia, where people are taken to that country and forced to work. When asked why it has to be in those country, the answer is because gambling is legal there, so it doesn't violate any laws... truly a disgusting fact.
It may sound ridiculous that these women fell for these scams, but there is something to consider. The divorce rates are pretty high around the world especially in Asia and US. After a messy divorce, people make dumb decisions.
Yes, because they are vulnerable. It's a shock to the body and mind when someone goes through divorce. They'll often feel like a failure, deceased self esteem, crave for some type of real connection and attention from others. Scammers can go to hell tbh.
People are often scammed when they have a desire for things they can’t have in their lives. Quenched your own desires and treasure what you already have.
Unfortunately, “Lee” shared with us that some of the love scam victims scammed by their syndicate had committed suicide. We were heartbroken at the thought of that too. This sort of crime is a staple in Nigeria and has a lot of Nigerians perpetrating or scamming people home and abroad. It has reached pandemic levels and thankfully is being addressed both by the legislative through the passing of bills to effectively deal and direct the judiciary in their duties and also by ant-graft agencies through investigations who track down and trace the laundered proceeds of these crimes. It is sad that a person's honest feelings and emotions are used to hurt them in such a manner when they sincerely are vulnerable and human. There's no excuse for such manipulative behaviour.
I was talking to this guy that I matched on Hinge. Because I almost got scammed by something like this a couple weeks ago, I got more cautious. Cambodia has long been sold to China. Not surprised most “trade” and “businesses” in this area are illegal. More like a dumping area of these kinds of transactions.
There is a lot of scammers nowadays, I know this woman who used to have a fiancee he actually convinced her to take a bank loan in her name to start a business together , a week later after handing the money over when she called him he was already overseas, now she's still stuck with a huge debt and that fiancee is nowhere to be found after blocking her in all his social media accounts.
Not victim shaming, but honestly asking how / why does a person get scammed twice on the same platform by 2 different guys back to back? (Of course, it could very well be the same scammer / syndicate...)

There are so many job offerings for Cambodia on Facebook. I hope people will help report those pages and job postings. From the news, those job offerings are actually to lure people to work as scammers. When they arrive Cambodia, they are forced to scam people.
Great reporting. You ask why we are falling for love scams? I'll tell you why with 3 D's 1) Desperate for Love 2) Dumb, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is, don't be so naive 3) Don't just meet online but many times in person as well.
Their tactics and strategy is far more superior than what you have shown in the video. I had encounter these bloody scammers and they have 101 tricks to scam you.
Agreed, but this is one of best reports I've seen so far. Because of the manipulation and psychological effect, it's very difficult to portray. The same as how someone that hasn't experienced this would just never understand.
@@ziyin453 As soon as they mention anything to do with money then assume they intend to scam. That's the best you can do. I could advise to not click on any links, which you shouldn't, but like I said in my previous comment, it's based on psychology and manipulation. Not love. If you continue to talk to them, they will use this tactic and you may not even be aware. Just remember, the reason you started talking to this person was not for financial advice.
Not just cambodia. I'm based in UK and the exact same thing happend. Thankfully I did my research on the app and told him I didn't want to download. He ended up saying we shouldn't talk if you don't trust me etc. Only been messaging him 6 days 😂

Why on earth would anyone, male or female give money to a prospective 'partner' they have never met? It's difficult enough when you 'know' someone. Keep love and money separate no matter the inducement.
I have met someone like this before last year. But the person seem a little too good to be true and once he mentioned about some investments and etc, I immediately cut contact with that person and knew my gut was right. This is quite common in China as well, called 杀猪盘。Be careful and aware of online dating scams.
Do not label those victims as stupid. Many will be surprised that even the smartest can be scammed! Because these scammers they are intelligent too and they are well planned and more experienced than you and me...as they are well trained like Air Rangers...and very experienced having scammed thousands of people! It is always by sharing, shout it out and let alert others about the different scams, is preventing more people from falling prey to scam
Loneliness n desperate for love might have lead them to this situation. Perhaps they can try doing some charitable activities bcos these activities will give them opportunities to make friends
They would let you withdraw profits if they think you have much more to take from. They do this to gain your trust, stoke your confidence in greed. This means, you can try to turn it around and take small profits and ghost them times and times again.
All this syndicate captive hostage inside the building many news heard or rescue victim they were bury alive, torture, raped or even sold their organ .
Landlords should report this to the police. I think it is their duties to do such thing because before renting out the property they know what sort of business the renter manage.
True, no Cambodian lives in those apartment complexes. I am sure those Chinese gang are not capable owning a block of land, since they are not Cambodian citizen. But somehow they manage to build such complex with the help from landlords who gain benefits from renting out their properties. Maybe it involves cash under table too.
I am Cambodian. Near my house The syndicate pays around 50k per month to landlord. How could they resist such amount of money. Plus the landlord is a high rank officer in government. who don’t know most officers that working in the government is greedy and corrupted.

These foreigners are giving Cambodia a bad name! They stayed in Cambodia developing these kinds of scams, targeting vulnerable & lonely people overseas. Cambodian people don’t do these kinds of things, they are kind and friendly and will never rob people of their hard earned money! It is always the foreigners who live in Cambodia to have these kinds of bad ideas. My apologies to those who have been scammed and may you find some healing, peace 🕊 and happiness in your journey. Thank you CNA for reporting this awareness, you guys are doing an terrific job.
Cambodia laws make it safe and easier for foreigners to investing money on properties and businesses. Foreigners cannot just come to the country and develop buildings as they want.Foreigners are allowed rights of ownership over specific properties, subject to the 2010 Law on Provision of Ownership Rights. It takes two sides ( Cambodia government and foreigners) to make it happens. Maybe Cambodian citizens should protest ! I am totally agree with you that these activities are illegal and they give Cambodia bad reputation!
Well that's what happening right now since your government already sold your country to China and China is just utilizing its own properties to run illegal businesses.
A friend of mine has recently lost 9k GB. Her mother even more. Just from playing a game! Meeting these male love scammers. I tried telling her 2 years ago but didn't believe me. Now she knows and her mother believes this guy. They make me sick
This is what happens when scammers are smart and educated enough... They can easily get you twirling in the palm of their hands. This is why a lot of people won't even suspect them as frauds because they are so good at pulling it off like real professionals. Also, these kinds of scams are proof that you can't find true love online these days. You gotta go out there and meet actual people and have real conversations.
It's easy NOT to fall into Love Scams. When he / she talks about money, run. Remember, just like Religion & Science do not mix, so is Love & Money do not mix.
Many people are forced to do scam there, a lot of people are sold there without their own consent, and they are beaten if they don’t follow instructions, they should be rescued, and less people will be scammed

Thank you for the question and Cheryl Tans team for the good work
You are any amazing journalist, thank you for this knowledge. As a Cambodian I wish our government would do more to help people.
I get you but also you are very judgmental.
You should give that same advice to men that get scammed or used by women that are "too attractive" for them. They are also delusional.
@@chihirostargazer6573 Yes
Same goes for the other gender but men tend to keep silent out of embarrassment. I personally know a handful of men who fell for the cryptocurrency scam. And they still believe they were scammed by a heartless golddigger and not a fat dude in an overcrowded callcenter.
Other two i warned them about it. Men feel like being ripped off if they take a lady out and pay fot her coffee but don't even blink in throwing hundreds and thousands to a photoshoped intagram model.
@@Sarablueunicorn yes, the context is the same.

It's important for her to know the mistakes she has made so that she won't repeat them.
It's not as simple as just giving them money though they're thinking they're investing. People need to realise investing into random crypto platforms is NEVER a good idea.
There'll be love scams targeting different language groups as well. It's no longer English and Mandarin-speaking scammers these days.
As a Cambodian, I can confirm those silent buildings are full of scammers. Most of them were scammed to work under scamming company too. In Cambodia, they scam us by saying "Get money from playing game" and soon you have to create account to deposit money. but so far your money has all be gone in one night too
why are the scammers mostly in Cambodia? is there no laws about scamming in Cambodia?

This is a great documentary. Thank you CNA for giving awareness to us 🙏
Here in Indonesia...we lost almost 10 billion Singapore dollar annually from scamming, online gambling etc..as online gambling, casino and scam is prohibited in Indonesia...Most syndicates operate online gambling from other country (same as mentioned in the video).
Scammers can go to hell tbh.
they are easy prey
People are often scammed when they have a desire for things they can’t have in their lives. Quenched your own desires and treasure what you already have.
I am agreed with you! 🤝
Totally agree
Calling it pig butchering makes me even more sick to my stomach than I already was…
what if they end their lives? I really can’t believe a human can be so heartless

Well nigerian mixed in w the Malaysian which isn’t far from these places
Shut up 😂
I was talking to this guy that I matched on Hinge. Because I almost got scammed by something like this a couple weeks ago, I got more cautious. I read through this guy profile and knew right away he is a scammer. I decided to match with him and play along. After about an hour texting, he thought I am his fellow scammer. He told me to stop pretending and asked me how much I made this month. Needless to say, I reported him on Hinge and his profile was removed. Funny thing is I got likes from 4 Asian men that day and they were all scammers. Such despicable people!
GREAT JOB! It makes me happy to see that you didn't fall for the scammers lies.

That’s so sad that people actually take tinder seriously and give away large sum of money.
Personally, I don't think this is victim shaming, it's a legit question. They do have a certain level of accountability for this, as sorry as I do feel for them

Their tactics and strategy is far more superior than what you have shown in the video. I had encounter these bloody scammers and they have 101 tricks to scam you.
Agreed, but this is one of best reports I've seen so far. Because of the manipulation and psychological effect, it's very difficult to portray. The same as how someone that hasn't experienced this would just never understand.
what is your best advice for other to prevent from getting scam?
@@ziyin453 As soon as they mention anything to do with money then assume they intend to scam. That's the best you can do.

Girls, look for faithful guy. He might be poor but you can get rich together. Remember, if it's too good to be true then that must be fake.

great content, hopefully more people can be made aware of these scam tactics...............
They would let you withdraw profits if they think you have much more to take from. They do this to gain your trust, stoke your confidence in greed. This means, you can try to turn it around and take small profits and ghost them times and times again.
Good one, but then u would need multiple bank accounts under different names, no?
As a Cambodian I feel really sad and sorry to see Cambodia became scammer play grounds
Not only scam they kidnapping tourist captive them for extort money from their family .
All this syndicate captive hostage inside the building many news heard or rescue victim they were bury alive, torture, raped or even sold their organ .
That’s why sometimes I hate foreigners. As much as they bring benefits, they bring a lot of troubles too
That's what happening when your government sold your country to China.
Landlords should report this to the police. I think it is their duties to do such thing because before renting out the property they know what sort of business the renter manage.
The entire block is owned and managed by the syndicates. Locally, very few if not no Cambodians lived at these guarded complexes
I was chatting with a 31 girl on Tinder for like 5 days. She was great, then she wanted me to take out a loan for 30k. Then got mad when I wouldn’t. It was really bizarre, but the link she sent was to bitsten exchange. And wasn’t fraudulent, I still can’t really believe it was a scam
To think some people even visit Cambodia as a tourist destination, this has to be stopped. The place is too dangerous.
wonderful coverage ! good job, cna 👏👏
I feel bad for these ladies, but there are red flags all over his texts! He sounds so fake.
Correct 😊😮
Many people are forced to do scam there, a lot of people are sold there without their own consent, and they are beaten if they don’t follow instructions, they should be rescued, and less people will be scammed
Oh gosh… can get scammed in church too these days. I think many people are lonely and looking to be loved
