    Hi Michael, as a bass player in a "Shadows" band I very much appreciate anyone who puts effort in getting to the original "Hank" sounds. Don't let anyone discourage you! Keep on playing!

    Hello Michael, thank you for sharing your latest practise session, well done to you, I too have been playing a few years now and love the Shadows music, you are correct when you say we must practise all the time, this is so important. I believe you are a better player than you give yourself credit for, the better we play the more confident a player we become, as we master our nervousness we improve greatly, you are so tense with your hands so rigid that you are unable to relax your fingers to play fluently, this is not at all easy. May I suggest that you hold your tremolo arm with the little finger of your right hand all the time you are playing until you are so used to playing with it, you will use it automatically without giving it a thought, the difference in tone/sound will be enormous and you will feel happier with your playing and therefore start relaxing naturally. Also if you live anywhere near a Shadows Guitar Club please go along, you will learn much more quickly and they will help you. Happy playing. Kind regards, Mel

    Keep going Michael you have put some major effort in there. What you have to remember is artists such as Hank and others play these tunes everyday to thousands and will play different versions ie will change notes and techniques in every performance. As for practice it's super important to practice for at least 3-4 hrs daily. I'm a singer in the Rat pack style but mainly Dean Martin is my influence. I know about 50+ songs word perfect. How I did that was every night in bed I literally perform a full set of songs in my head, I've been doing this for the last 5 yrs. It's easier that way as your subconscious mind is like a sponge that retains info.

    It's hard enough when you are learning to play guitar to keep in time and rythym to a backing track,when he gets more familiar with his general playing he will be more confident using the vibrato bar. At the moment the vibrato is just something else to think about,I think he his playing pretty well,it can only get better and it will,try to relax a little Michael, otherwise well played. Try to gently hold the vibrato bar by letting it rest in your free fingers whilst playing and you will soon get the hang of it,you do need the vibrato to really get Hanks sound,his playing style is built around the vibrato.

I use Vox AD60 or AD120 (blue speaker cloth like the AC15 and AC30 cabinet style)which are the Amplifier version with the Valvetronix 'brain' built in. I have been trying for years to get the sound and the Tonelab and SE work great for recording and through a mixer into speakers.

    Somebody asked for the Hank Marvin tone in a facebook group, I watched some videos and I still can't decide about the pickup, it seems he uses the second position (bridge + middle). Single coil seems to be part of the key, then I am not sure if compressor since you know the picking with compression has a particular sound.. I cant decide because I watched some live videos.
    One thing for sure is that there are different sounds for different songs surely, this guy in facebook said that different songs have different delays. Another thing to take into account is that since Hank Marvin and the Shadows is an old band, much of that sound comes from different instruments, amplifiers, recording methods, and all there was in those times. So, it is difficult to talk about 1 sound, but if I was to make a patch (in my gt10) I would try to immitate the new sound, in the live videos, I like that sound.
    Having so few ingredients, the preamp choice and that sort of small choices would be vital for the patch. Also, as far as I heard (old and new) this guitar player doesnt seem to use any strange stuff, like flanger or anything like that. he seems to use 2 delays, 1 short and the other a bit longer. then as I said maybe a a compressor, and in my case I am gonna have to use a single simulator effect to simulate a single pickup, or get a stratocaster (I always wanted one). and last, if you dont use your bar you will never sound like Hank Marvin, but there is a trick, there is an effect called tremolo, and since Hank Marvin was obsessed with his tremolo bar, well, you can use that effect to be ON all the time and nobody would notice the difference. I can bet in my gt10 tremolo has also a predelay (not sure about that), so I can definitely use that resource as well, it is gonna be unfair and cheatery, but it would work for sure.

    • @michaelnielsen7406
      @michaelnielsen7406  3 года назад +1

      Hi, I bought a set of many reverb types dedicated to different Shadow songs, and I have settled for around 10 different reverb types, some short and some longer, but always with 2 reverbs on top of each other. so the choice of reverbs certainly makes a difference! I get the best sound from my bridge pickup on my strat. In the early days the Shadows used thicker strings (0,012) which were hard to bend, therefore the tremolo arm was needed. So as you mentioned the entire sound chain of instrument type, string type, pickup choice, reverb selection, amp type etc.defines the final sound.

  • @ChrisWilson-mg1it
    @ChrisWilson-mg1it 4 года назад

    Hi Michael, you need to learn how to bend the strings to get more feeling into what you’re playing. Also try to relax when playing. Hum the tune that you’re playing when you’re playing it. I bought a cheap Strat, stripped it all down then put Fender custom shop 54’ pickups, fitted a Goto trem unit which is very stable, fitted a bone nut, changed the tuners for some good quality locking ones, refretted the neck etc. I use a Zoom G2 NU with Charlie Hall patches which works well. Regarding amps, I have an Vox AC30 for larger venues micked up, a Fender Vibrolux and a Vox AV60 for smaller venues. I’m always getting good comments for The Shadows sound I get so I guess it must be right, of course it’s all to do with your fingers and the expression you can get..... keep going, you will get there in the end

    great playing but you have got 2 things wrong first have your strings set to low they need to be raised a little bit from the bridge end ... 2nd you are playing over the middle pickup to get the right sound try playing over the neck pickup also check the tuning of your strings and relax then your playing will Sound will be wow keep up the good work

      I don’t know about sheet music, but I get a lot of my backing tracks from Goran Tangrig, I often also use midi files

    Hej Michael, som dig prøver jeg også ! Hvis du har lyst kan vi prøve at dele nogle af vore erfaringer. Ved ikke hvor du bor, ud over hvad jeg kan se på billedet. ( det ligner en typisk Dansk ejendom med nogle år på bagen ). Jeg er hjemmehørende i NV Sjælland.

      Cecilia Millership, he sounds a lot more like Hank than you ever will, so maybe you only comment when you can prove you are better.

    • @SvOekel
      @SvOekel 5 лет назад

      @@ctiley2212 I'm sorry, but that is putting the world upside down! Cecilia Millership isn't stating (like Michael Nielsen DOES) that (s)he can get close to Hank B's sound, just that Michael doesn't. Which -in a way- is true! Question is: should Cecilia write this as a comment? For Michael is doing his best and giving an insight into his quest for the Shadows' sound. That shouldn't be disqualified just like that with a superior "you are nowhere near Hanks sound". But I can assure you: there was a time I could get closer to Hank B'sound than is demonstrated on the video. Alas I can't "prove" it as due to osteo-arthritis I can't play the guitar anymore...................

      @@SvOekel By making her statement she is claiming superiority and the qualifications to make the statement. If she thinks she is qualified to be so rude, let her prove it, he does a lot better than I ever have so good on him, his sound I think is quite pleasant.

      Adrian,Michael is learning..did you play like Hank when you were learning?..can you even play like Hank now?...give him a break..I've been playing Shads tracks when they were being released and entering the charts,in the 1960's,from 15 years old,..I studied Hank's every move,every bend,every fluffed note..[check out FBI!],but I couldn't afford the gear,so had to learn on a plywood box Rossetti Lucky Seven,with a wide flat neck...no pickups no tone whatsoever..but I practised,and practised......and practised ....six and seven hours every night after a hard shift working underground as a young coalminer....until it all came to me,then I got some decent gear,and suddenly friends were saying I was as good as Hank....well...NO-ONE is as good as Hank,cos he has a unique feel,charisma,body language,and character.
      So he is a hero to us all,and we just have to practice,and be content with ourselves,and to hell what any body else thinks!!..if they can do better....let's see them on here!!.
      Having said all that,I do accept constructive and kind criticism and advice,as it is all a matter of opinion,but we can all do without negative derogatory comments,with no substance at all,and which only serves to undermine a player's confidence.
      The vibrato arm and picking position advice is absoloutely correct,and given in the correct manner,so Adrian,try to keep comments in a more positive manner and don't come across as a Mr Know-all,who thinks he knows all,but knows absoloutely F......-all!!
      Rant over Adrian....sorry Mate but you had it wrong also!
