Part 46: RFID Door Locks/Openers - My 76 Mazda RX-5 Cosmo Restoration

  • First things first: I'm going to freely admit that this project is not critical to getting the car finished. Honestly it has just been an idea that seems to have implanted itself in my head a few years ago and rattling around inside me since then. So I decided to inject a little fun and magic into the previously shaved doors (remember part 8?) with the addition of RFID actuated openers. And yes, I realize this episode is fairly long and perhaps should have been lacerated into two parts, but I think you'll understand why I didn't split it up by the end and chose to keep it homogeneous. It also turned out to be very involved, in the sense that part 46 includes almost every fabrication technique I have access to: welding, rapid prototyping (3D printing to the lay person), fiberglass, electronics, programming and anatomy. Oh, there might also be a visit from a certain special guest to help out. One other fascinating fact is that I used more disposable latex surgical gloves in this episode than all previous episodes combined!

    I'm really impressed with how your fibreglass pieces came out. Me personally though, I would've stuck the coil to the inside of the rear quarter glass with some clear vinyl wrap and saved all this effort.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  5 лет назад +8

      But that's far less magical. And one could see the coil. I did consider that but felt it would take away from some of the cool factor. For a first ever fibreglassing effort I also think the result wasn't too bad. A few air pockets here and there and obviously had to mill out the extra material, but basically worked.

    Well, at this rate id think if you didn't use the RFID to actually start the engine I'd be disappointed. Maybe do a keyed backup somewhere just in case you loose a hand to infection.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  5 лет назад +9

      Ultimately yes, there will be an RFID reader in the car to enable the vehicle to start. At least that's where I think I'm heading. Haven't completely decided on that yet. Definitely another reader at the trunk for those times it is inconvenient to reach for keys/remote. The final system will allow multiple tags to be recognized so no problem having backup/valet/secondary driver (yeah, as if someone else will drive the car) tags.

    • @baggedandblown

      Unlocking the doors with an RFID implant is cool as hell but if you've then got to use a plain old key to start it whats the point haha.

It won't be long now...one of us, one of us...And thank you for reminding me that I need to hit Princess Auto during the current sale and pick up some more of those plastic drawer parts storage cabinets. On the Datsun 620, what are you doing with the drivetrain?

    • @pmccready291
      @pmccready291 5 лет назад

      That magic will be in my pocket! I'm also planning on a keyless start to go with that. I'm grafting the '75 620 KC body onto an '85 720 frame to gain front discs and updated electrics, this way I can add AC or whatever since the 620 only had 5 electrical circuits. For the immediate future I will use the Z2.4 but am looking ahead to using a Nissan V6 to keep it in the family. The cab came with an aftermarket sunroof installed so I'm planning on fitting in a spoiler-type sunroof once I find a suitable donor...

    Firstly, impressed with, and jealous of, the RFID implant. I've wanted to get one for a long time, but i A) don't know what I'd use it for, and B) am a mechanic for a living, and would worry about it breaking in my hand.
    This is a pretty awesome implementation. You should try and incorporate similar systems in all you vehicles (including ignition), as well as the locks on your house. You'd never have to carry a key again!
    Just a (the) tip: When potting those PCB"s, you could've welded the ends on, and left the top open. The PCB's would still be completely sealed within the potting compound, and both mounting tabs would be welded on. I'd honestly worry about the end you "bonded" with the potting compound breaking off. It might feel solid, but repeated shocks from closing the doors, plus road vibration... There's a good chance of that joint failing. At the very least, consider tacking the corners.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  5 лет назад

      So many uses! For example, RFID readers to arm and disarm your alarm. RFID access control stuff is dirt cheap on eBay from China. Yes, breakage COULD be a concern in extreme circumstances. But by the time the implant is broken, that part of your hand is crushed so a broken RFID chip would be the least of your concerns I'd think. The body surrounds it will collagen after a month or so, encapsulating it in a protective layer. But definitely the hand needs to be treated gently for a week or two after implantation. I do all kinds of physical stuff; working on cars, construction, shooting, biking, etc. and am not worried about it.Oh, I guess I didn't show it in the video but before I put the ends on I had cut slits on the bonding side with the Dremel, for more surface area for the epoxy to grip. That stuff is wicked strong.

    Merry christmas Aaron, looking forward for next mini-projects on the Cosmo :)
    A small tip about etching. I put the PCB on the top of cloride with the copper layer down, let it float by itself and let chloride do its job. Works quite nice, you don't have to wave with the whole bowl...just need to be a bit carefull, not to catch any bubble under the PCB. Also you can see the progress of etching thought the fiberglass of the board...and just close to the end really take it out to check it :)

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  5 лет назад

      My boards always sink. On my long list of projects is a vertical etch tank that pumps etchant over the board, while keeping it warm. Actually I intend to try the muriatic acid / hydrogen peroxide etchant as my ferric chloride is starting to wear out.

    @aaroncake I actually have an RFID circuit already built to do the exact same thing. =] I too plan on getting the chip implanted in my hand. The only diff. is I want to be able to enable terminal 15r with the same chip, allowing me to start the car using a Starter Button. If I really want to overtune... I may even implement biometric security via finger print scanner... but that would be included in later revisions. lolz I have been designing a CAN system for my car for a while, just never have the time to actually install it all. So far all I have installed is a Raspi running Kali Linux attached to a 7" Touchscreen, Custom fit into the factory location with OTG, USB, AUX, Ext. WIFi Ant., WiFi Hotspot, and Portable HD installed. I was orig. going to design the entire system using Raspi and arduinos, although lately Ive decided to use a micro atx based mini pc. The Raspi just isnt fast enough anymore. hehe I eventually plan on including things like, Rain Sensor to control wipers and raise windows if it starts raining, various data sensors, camera, etc. Love the vids. Jeremy Oh! My car is a 04 GTi, before this car though, my circuits were designed to be fit in mk2 VWs. :)

      It sounds like we have quite a lot in common. I ran a car PC for many years in my RX-7 and Insight to play MP3s (info on my website in Projects section). Actually for about 5 years I was an Admin on mp3car.com, back when it was mainly a forum. I'll be implementing CAN on the Cosmo as well. In fact it is looking like the next video might involve some of that. Going to try and stay away from SBCs or general purpose computers because mainly reliability. I'll be designing a body ECU for the car to control everything, leaning towards using an ESP8266 as the core. That really is my favourite microcontroller at this point. Not a lot of I/O but with I2C can have infinite in/out channels. Plus WiFi, so for example the car could connect to my home automation system and report status. Definitely going to implement a rain sensor (Binky did it) as well.

    Hey Aaron, is the regulator necessary if I'm going to use an arduino nano with the module? What about power consumption? I am going to use something similar for a motorcycle.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  5 лет назад +4

      12V is about the maximum you would want to feed an Arduino with because of the regulator used on the board. You also don't want to feed it directly from the dirty 12V, which of course could go as high as 14V, from the alternator/magneto. Best bet would be to use a DC-DC converter with a 5V output and run both the Arduino and RFID reader from the 5V source. I made the regulator board since I wanted to run the module from 12V instead of shuffling 5V around the car which would be subject to voltage drops and interference. As for power draw, the RDM6300 uses about 50mA while the Nano uses about the same but can be put into sleep which reduces power consumption to a few microamps when idle. I bet that any regulator you use to drop the voltage to 5V probably uses more current.

      My website won't ever disappear. Been running it since 1995 and have no intention of taking it down. Hopefully it wasn't down for very long. I self host, so I know it wasn't a server issue. Likely a connectivity problem higher up the line.

      @@aaroncake it was down for about 2 weeks I think. All okay now though. It's been a massive help to me and I'm sure others.

    • @aaroncake

      Whoa! Must have been a connectivity issue because it definitely wasn't down for two weeks. I have a monitoring system that checks the basics (ports open, services running) every 60 seconds, and performs user tasks (running through forms, checking dynamic page generation, etc.) every 15 minutes. Definitely would have known. :-)

    Using RFID is a great idea and obviously you do things however you want to do them but I think I'd have left the doors as-is and found a way to stick the RFID coil on the inside of the lower corner of the back seat window. It would be accessible if it needs to be replaced, and would keep keys or anything from being dragged across the paint to swipe your fob.
    Anyways, good work as always.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  5 лет назад

      That would unfortunately defeat the magic of opening the doors. I purposely made sure the only component that would be embedded within the bodywork is the reader coil, which has little chance of failing. The RFID reader electronics are replaceable if necessary from inside the door.

      Not sure. The current Cosmo project is a little complicated and more fiddly than I thought, so it is taking longer. Also there's the issue of waiting for parts (from China).

      It's coming along well. The current Cosmo project (decided on by the viewers) is rather detailed, so it began with a lot of just sitting and saying "Hmmm...". At this point I think I have enough footage, and know it will be a multi-part episode, so now just busy editing.

      @@aaroncake sorry for the late reply but i originally wanted to be an electrician. im sure you know how magnets and electricity interact when within the same vicinity. well the small magnet under my skin osculates when it comes near a live/higher voltage electric line. i can feel outlets behind thin walls and metal detectors, i was a small body mod that comes in handy sometimes especially good and finding magnets in other things that you cant see normally.
