- Follow along while I'm attending Battle of Wisby for the first time ever!
Some glimpses from the Medieval Week are also included, as well as my preparations before the event.
SOME FACTS:
Battle of Wisby recreates two battles wich took place in 1361. These were the Battle of Mästerby and the battle outside the wall itself, Battle of Wisby. These were consequences of the Danish king Waldemar Atterdag invading Gotland,an Swedish island in the Baltic Sea, and wanting to subjugating the island as he had done the same in southern parts of Sweden. The Danish army was superior and quickly won the two battles, forcing the local people to surrender. The event also consists of a camp outside the city wall, with hundreds of reenactors living, from all over the world, for an entire week.

Extra thank you to Hillevi Andersson,
Maja Pisarewska Rugstad and Mats Gard for helping me with the filming ♡
Pictures in the thumbnail are taken by Cornelius wom Hofe
The music after the Battle of Wisby are played by the very talented Ernst Stoltz, www.ernststolz.... Thank you for letting me borrow your music!
„I need a chicken to hug right now“ ... I felt that in my soul
Hahaha😂
I am here for this comment
Chicken hugs are great.
just chillin' with the chicken
The people who are pretending to be dead and/or injured are so patient! It must be challenging to lie so still for such a long time.
@FairlyWildChild - And in the rainy mud, no less!
The filmography and story telling in this video is amazing
The music is phenomenal, as well. I need it as the soundtrack to my life!! Thankfully, I found this group on Spotify, and now it can be.
This video touches my heart. The drama of battle and the aftermath. It made me cry for all the people lost in the real battles. Love it.
Now I need a chicken to hold.
Hahahah🤣 we all nees that!
Me too, war makes me sad. This video helped me think about all the battles we read about in history. They were real people.
I love the fact that you are willing to show what isn't perfect. Most youtubers (and people in general), in my experience, wouldn't show things like that they have not been able to finish all the hemming. And I think it is a ridge instead of a hill.
Yes!!
I would call it either a hill or a ridge.
Prehenactment: the well known stress before, time optimism failing, starting too late...
Re-enactment: the fun, the joy, the long days, the hard work, the fresh air, the smoke in your eyes, the bugs in your bed
De-enactment: the days or week of low energy hitting you hard, the long time to unpack and the need to do this again, and again.
It was nice meeting and sharing the camp, getting to know you somewhat etc. Let's do it again!
As a student who lives in Visby it was very fun to play "spot my friends" 😂😂😂 Saw that you met some of them and others sneeked in anyway.
Unfortunately I didn't have time to go to the Battle of Wisby and have a look because if work, so watching your video was a really nice way to get a good look into it!
So I see this is almost a year old, so you may have learned this by now, but we help the bug situation at my events by putting down diatomaceous earth (I think cinnamon works too if there's laws at your location about what you can put down) under the foot print of the tent and about a foot around it and then putting down a tarp or two (water proof and then canvas if you're doing both), and then the tent on top of all of that. Diatomaceous earth can be bought at hardware and gardening stores I think
It's not a perfect solution, but it sure helps massively. Some of us will also put a sacrificial snack at a far corner just outside the tent so any bugs that make it in go for that instead of the bed.
I think you just changed my life
Wonderful tip!
This was absolutely beautiful. You really have an eye for cinematography and storytelling. I look forward to seeing where this channel goes. ❤️
I love seeing videos like this. It makes me happy to see people who are passionate about history, and fashion history, reliving the past, and just unapologetic history nerd fun.
Oh when you walked out onto the battlefield like a yellow ghost, I shuddered.
Even though it's a reenactment the "dead" soldiers or warriors got me almost tearing up! lol
But it was definitely interesting to watch. I always wondered what it's like to go to one of those things. Thank you for sharing and can't wait to see what you have next!!!
Me too, it somehow looked so real and made me realize they are not just numbers in books but real people!
Hej! This was the perfect video to watch whilst felling some seams on my new medieval shift. Your filmography never ceases to amaze me!!! What camera do you use? X
Panasonic Lumix GH5😊
I think medieval veils should be brought back into fashion
Yaaaas🎉🎉
Mina Scarratt me, too!
Yes please.
No, thank you. I don't feel like a veil of any kind should be of fashion, I like that I'm not pressured to wear any lol.
Turbans are still of fashion though, if.you want something elegant and retro to wear on the head !
@@alleemaria97 You don't have to wear what you don't want to wear haha
13:15 - As an Australian allow me to emphasise the importance of laying down a ground sheet or boards when pitching a tent anywhere. I made the mistake of not doing that once as a child and I curled up asleep, put my hand under my pillow, and was woken by movement under there. The entire bedding was filled with enough species to keep an entomologist busy for weeks.
My first thought was "well...nearly half an hour...", but it turned out to be very dynamic and extremely well made. I enjoyed every second of it.
So ... you did it once ... you loved it ... and once you are "caught" you are stuck forever!
Welcome to our "family"! :-)
Best regards
Niko - IG14
Your video skills are amazing to watch! The longer video is well worth the wait 😊💕 if you feel up to it in the future I’d love to see more events documented like this!
this is so cool ! and i think its really lovely to see the yellow kirtle we saw you make being actually used, and in such a cool setting ! adds a whole new dimension to the sewing videos ^^
This looks so much fun! Also the feels when you're wandering the battlefield afterwards seeing all the dead. I've done it at events I've been to as a "healer" it can be overwhelming when you can't help.
I thoroughly enjoyed the video. I do re-enactments with the SCA it’s not the same, in that we re-enact medieval time periods not specific battles, plus we are in the USA so we don’t really get the authentic feel like you do. But I say if you enjoy showing what you do with the clothing you are making it makes it so much better for the viewers as well. Well done!
A word of encouragement, my dear. You are doing very well sewing all this, and it's fine to bring a project to work on, and mending small things first gives you a sense of accomplishment. Sew some fur on that brown one and off you go.
I’m just coming to the end of my reenactment life after 30 years. It was lovely to see the beginning of yours.
i would love to see a more in depth video of how this camping works. Payment, places, tents, costumes are required or not, food. as someone who know nobody in it!
Your filmography, music choices and storytelling is just perfect and so beautiful! Thank you for sharing your journey and time at the Battle of Wisby ☺️
Oh my goodness the fire dancers... I’ve been dreaming to see that for ages! I’m so glad I found you, and I want to go to Battle of Visby now! I love medieval sewing, and your channel is amazing for that. Thank you!
Marvelous filming. You had quite an experience. Thank you for taking us along. I loved this so much. I loved seeing the dancing and the ocean. I think you had a very rich earning time. I am happy about that.
Your home at night, with all the candles lit, is my aesthetic! I laughed out loud when I saw the headphones because I didn't expect to be brought back to 2019! 😂 Absolutely beautiful work!!!
This is such a beautiful video! I’m so glad you had a lovely time and it’s so inspiring to see you chase your dreams!!
The soundtrack you use is so peaceful, especially with the great shots of nature. Thank you for creating such relaxing and interesting content!
This is gorgeous! You are an amazing filmmaker. I am so inspired by you. Keep up the amazing work
When suddenly the video has ended and only then you realise it's half an hour 😱 I had no clue. I love that you showed your struggles before you went on the boat, and I think many fellow sewers rocognise this very much 😥
Would you every consider making a tutorial on how to make a veil? I know there are different types and I'm considering one for Summer work in the garden
It' funny - I love everything Medieval, *except* the head-coverings (for women) - how very depressing it'd be to have to wear head-covering all the time, nun-like - I'm all for long, free-flowing hair!! :) (And funny how men didn't necessarily need to wear veils, or other head-covering, it's always only been for women... Ugh, so unfair!)
I am so hyped! Your filmography is so stunning and this is so interesting to seen
Imagine going through your day and you look over and there's a full mideval town just... there
Damn, those earbugs are the definition of historical reenactment, honestly. I loved your video, it reminded me of my days of reenactment and appreciate every moment of it :)
Where do you find a medieval reenactment friend? I need one lol.
This looks so fun! I wish we events like this in new Zealand, I'd love to experience it
Don't they do this kind of thing at Canterbury Faire?
Toni Jenkins having been both to Battle of Wisby (only recently back home) and many Canterbury Faires, it’s a different experience, the main differences being: CF is a private event of ~250-300ppl, Where BoW has 350 in camp but 40,000 in town for medieval week; CF is multi-period where BoW is only C14th, meaning more like-minded nerding to be had; CF is in a lovely green site but BoW is camping in the east graveyard outside the Wisby city wall, and it’s are to top that atmosphere; language, as everyone at CF speaks English, but BoW has about 20 languages and even more cultures going on; finally, the markets, where Both CF and BoW have an internal market event, BoW also has the medieval week markets which attracts 90% crap and 10% awesome gems of vendors, and is huge, so can buy superb fabrics, lovely dress accessories, and many other cool things that aren’t as easily available in AU or NZ (except by ordering online, which is not the same as handling then buying at an event).
Such a gorgeous video! Looked like it was an amazing experience! So great seeing all the different styles and looks being worn at the event. You have such a wonderful and bright personality, cannot wait to see more from you 💚💚💚
This video has just inspired me to add a gaukler child to my idea of a sword-wealding blacksmith daughter from the city of blades and make the two of them go on a quest.
So thank you very much for this video! XD
Dear Elin, thank you for exating video. Your technical video skills are fantastic and comtent is super too. Maybe you can make a talking video about how to get to the festival? Registration, requierments, cost, ets. It will be very helpful for starting reconstructors like me.
I don't think I'm the right person to answer this, but if you're interested in attending battle of wisby, I would recommend you to check out their site on Facebook!
Oh yeah. A lot of living historians Fridays. Seams to fell, not packed, food to make, etc.
My husband was doing for 10 years medieval fights reenactments, we are Polish. Grunwald 1410 battle especially. He was basically going to those reenactments to fight in friendly way with other guys, hitting them with his Lutzeral hummer, because f*** swords, like "I am 2 meter tall, 110 kg guy, just give me a hammer." He was even representing Poland in international battles (that exist for real, I wasn't aware for years that he had to proof that he fights very good and they chose him between many, I thought that they were taking everybody, that is sexy). As from a person being completely not interested in the topic and being awkwardly unaware and surprised of, you would thought, basic knowledge about reenactments, you medievals, are pack of great and hilarious people.
O, I slept under tent almost identical like yours. It is freaking great in hot summers, the breeze that is going just above the ground, where tent doesn't touch it very refreshing.
Just watched this and want to thank you for sharing this experience! I learned about this battle a few months back and was pleasantly surprised to see this vlog by you today. Such an awful past "battle." But, what a terrific place for a experiencing that time period. Yes, if you do such gatherings and re-enactments again, after Covid, please do share!
This was so beautiful and captivating. I appreciate all of your hard work and honesty with the challenges. You and your friend are amazing - does she have an online presence too?
Your videos have me reconsidering my time period and want to research 14th century more.
I love your yellow kirtle. It's such a lovely colour and suits you.
Please Don't put pins in your mouth, you & your friend. My late mother told me never to pins in my mouth. She told me that there had been a lady who living in Quetzaltenango where my mother grew up; the lady was sewing and put pins in her mouth. Someone came by and frightened her. She swallowed the pins, and she died. Leave the pins in the cushion, please, for your safety and your friend's. Blessings
This was beautiful!!!! You have so many wonderful skills!!! I loved this whole video. Wonderfully done!!!! Thank you for taking us along!!!!
As a passionate lover of everything medieval (of course I am a romantic), passionate about history and having studied a year of drama/theatre performance, reinactment is something I would absolutely love doing! I used to go to medieval fairs, which were held once a year just 15 minutes from here at a 12th century castle, but sadly, for some reason they stopped doing it! It was left for a few years and thus, the castle fell into disrepair again, after they had just restored it enough for the public to come and see it. It is currently under more restoration and I really hope they will do the fairs again in the future!
What did you attend the event as, were you part of the program or a volunteer, something else? (not like a peasant or upper class but what part did you play in the event, you mentioned working?)
Some of your external shots look very much like the scenery in northern Minnesota where I used to live. We had many Swedish people settle in the area and I wonder if they felt more at home there because the scenery was similar. It makes me want to visit Sweden now and see!
I love your chickens! They’re so pretty. And so much better behaved than ours. When we open the coop door they just fly out and into whoever might be standing in the way! And they don’t like hugs. I need training on chicken whisperer skills. 🤣
So heartfelt! Your choreography between the action and the music as well as your realistic commentary was wonderful! Love your hens too!
Thank you!❤
Can you do a video on the different types of hand stitches that you do? And I would also like to see more clearly how you fell your seams. Love your videos :)
The video's length? Not to worry, I could literally watch this for hours. I love doing re-enactments. They're very tiring but, the excitement, fun, and friends far outshine anything like bugs or rain. Truly a memory to last a lifetime. Thank you for taking us along, and for showing us so much of it. The fire dancers were really cool. I'm so glad you enjoyed your time there. Blessings from the U.S.
Can you talk about the kitchen work & technology, and medieval food that you mention near the end of the video?
This video is perfection! Very well done! Oh that must've been an amazing, unique and illuminating experience.
I wish Elin had seen Cathy Hay's video on Self-Discipline like a month or so before!! (says she on a binge of costube...)
I do re-enactments from the 1600-1800's, in Canada. I'm First Nations (Mi'kmaq-Oneida) and I wear authentic clothing from those eras. Sometimes its Native, and sometimes its French Colonial. I don't have any videos yet, but as soon as COVID is done, and I go to my next re-enactment in Nova Scotia, I'll post some stuff. It was a lot of fun watching your re-enactment, and I learned a lot. Thank you. :)
These videos make me want to get into making medieval dresses too! So inspiring.
I loved this video, it must have been an amazing experience to be able to live a few days as if you were really in the Middle Ages. I searched for news about the Battle of Wisby and what I read made me sad, it must have been terrible. Is the historical re-enactment there every year? You were great and thank you for this story!
Love this film so much
❤️ Kisses from Poland
Thank you for bringing me back to Visby! I could really need that today :)
I love your yellow dress! That was the first thing I said to my friend when I saw you at Visby xD
(I'm the girl with no veil on the battlefield and the one with the Dr. Who phone case in the veil workshop xD )
I hope we'll meet again next time in Visby! ;)
Tack så mycket!
Very cinematic. I thought it was a professional documentary.
This was so fantastically filmed and edited - I'm amazed. I look forward so very much to your upcoming videos!!!
I love your vintage sewing machine..
This was so interesting! I always mean to check out the medieval markets/events in my country (Switzerland), but somehow I've never done so. This has definitely reawakened my interest - now if only the plague will pass, so we can mingle and enjoy these kinds of things again!
I live in Switzerland too and never thought of checking for things like this
This was so incredibly beautiful to watch! I’ve aaalways wanted to attend re-enactments like this, ever since I was a child and watching this was the next best thing. Also can I just say, your cinematography and the editing in this video (in all your videos really), soooo beautiful!
I would love to see more videos like this in the future as well!!
I think it adds really great dimension to your channel. To not only see you make your costumes, but to get an idea of the events you intend them for. Thank you for sharing the experience with us. Also I'm glad you had such a good time.
Lovely video! Amazing indeed, I was feeling some nostalgy for the medieval week :) the battle of Wisby is indeed an amazing event during the week, so if it was your first time, hope you come back and become one of us medeltidare :)
Greetings from the island of roses (Gotland of course :D )
God I love her accent and everything that she does history is so cool
Great video again - you do such a great job of editing! I just joined a medieval association here in Denmark (a forening .. you know?), and who knows if we will go to Visby eventually =) Certainly seemed like a cool event. Feel so bad for you for having those unwelcome bedmates though!!
I came for the kurtle, staying for your cinematography.
Send you love from Russia 💙
For 27 minutes and 35 seconds I didn’t miss sewing AT ALL! Your experience in the re-enactments was fabulous. I stopped the screen many times to get a look at the different styles being worn, and all the ages represented. And you’re right. It was very powerful watching a woman looking for her loved one to no avail. It’s easy to see why people enjoy these groups! Having a common interest always creates a bond. And having times during the year when you all get together to enjoy your hobby/side job/career makes it even more enjoyable. Thank you for sharing!
So amazing, I love this and you are such an awesome host! I do reenactment in the US for Texas, and the War Between the States (Civil War). I want to add revolutionary, and MidEvil era as well! We have Renaissance Festival locally every year and I want to make my own dress period correctly.
Great story telling. You shoot images beautifully so if there is only one sewing related video to every 10 random ones I'd still be happy to watch.
Beautiful videography. Excellent job.
I LOVED this video!! I hope one day you come back to RUclips and film another year at Wisby. I'm so glad I found your channel!
You are wonderfully courageous putting your process, work, talent and learning here for all of us to witness! Your skill in sewing, video editing and filming and joy is an inspiration and soothing to the soul✨thank you!!!
You are an amazing inspiration, I just made my first kirtle 👗💕😆
I love to hear that!🎉
I don’t mean to be creepy, but where do you live? It looks so beautiful there.
Visby is in Sweden, on the island of Gotland. Gotland is located on the south-east coast of Sweden so probably around there somewhere
I mostly live in Stockholm, but also in Småland, where this is recorded😊
This video was so artfully made! It's so interesting to see the parts of the battle where they tend to the passed/injured. Thank you for sharing your experience.
This is a beautiful video and you are an extremely talented film maker. The event was amazing, and I do hope you make more videos like this.
I just found you, I really love living history, we have so much to learn through it, it needs to be in our children’s lives more. Your videos are really great. There are many of us out there you are not alone. Thanks for creating these videos for those out there who are wanting to learn more.
I love this video!
Keep up the good work with your sewing as well as your living history events. I enjoy them equally! ♡
You both looked fabulous! I have been as a spectator to many multi-period reenactments here in the U.K. and I have a keen interest in the living history side rather than the battles. It looks like you all had a fantastic time despite the rain. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure here.
Keep uploading please, love your videos
Your editing is really amazing, and your videos as a whole are so aesthetic, they're so pleasant to watch. The musics are also very good choices! Thank you for showing us this event!
Make a veil evolution video
Wow, I wish I could attend something like that 😍. Your editing is awesome 💖And a huge thanks to you, for showing that I am not the only one with bad time management in terms of getting all things sewn right on time in my imagination and to be stressed about everything that's left to do in such little time in real life 😅
This video was amazingly done, It felt like I was watching a movie, beautifully edited and your costumes turned out great too, even if they are not quite finished :)
Excellent! Thank you for the glimpse into this event! :) Well met, from America and St. Hubert's Rangers. :)
There's a fellow ranger organising the event 😉
@@littleshopoferror I wondered if you were there. :) Outstanding!
Your production qualities are amazing. Super work.
Im just leaving some love right now:
I absolutely adore your channel! The way you make your videos is so cinematic and beautiful. ♥
It’s now 2023. Aren’t you glad that you had this amazing experience before Covid shut down all of the faires, gatherings and wars? I would love to see what you created whilst locked in with your fabric and needles. Also, this video is professional quality. Beautiful!
I felt transported...Beautiful to experience this through your amazing channel !
I can't imagine how it must have felt to walk into a battlefield right after a battle and finding your loved ones...a husband...a father...brother...maybe an Uncle, laying dead.😭
Wonderful video! Amazing! Beautiful!
Thank you Elin! ^^
