The message from public health experts is clear: Wearing a mask can help stop the spread of coronavirus. But that message hasn't completely gotten through; many Americans still simply don't believe it. It's a major failure of communication, one that has almost certainly cost lives.
But the US government actually had a plan to prevent almost this exact situation from happening: A written set of rules to communicating in a public health crisis, including how to make sure that public health information doesn't get mixed up with politics. But then, when the biggest health crisis in a century arrived, they ignored it completely.

To be honest, that seems to be the case in most of the Western world.. others just had leaderships that had more respect from their people, and more respect to facts and their peoples' well-being. @@cottonballs185 Depends. If you are in a profession where you are likely to come in contact with potentially infected people it makes sense to change disposable masks frequently. If you are home and go out only once in a day or so, a washable cotton mask will also did the trick.

I also find it a very dangerous and ignorant statement. They dismissed experts as bureaucrats. That is wrong on many levels, it's gonna take a long time to explain. Yikes indeed.
People feel like they have more control over, and therefore can better trust, those they elect as opposed to those in agencies where the people in power aren't elected. That's part of why there's so much media distrust, for example. That's why people distrust the military-industrial complex, why people distrust big pharma, so on and so forth. People trust those they feel they can hold accountable.

The right doesn't even want to acknowledge the problem. There could be many solutions out there that reduce the likelihood of school shootings without impacting the second amendment, but the right won't even bother discussing it so the only solutions that can ever be tabled necessarily come from the left while the right just whinge on about "now's not the time to discuss this" over and over and over again.

Because they're extremely uneducated contrarians and it's all they're good for.
In all fairness it is both sides that make everything a political issue. A tree could fall across the road and instead of simply removing the tree and going on with life there would be a long argument over if the Republicans or the Democrats made the tree fall. It is so very tiring. I have never seen this country as divided as it is now. It isn't about who is right or wrong anymore, it is all about which political side you're on.
Because they got pretty much everything they historically wanted in the 80s and 90s under Reaganomics -- namely, the vast majority of wealth funneled to the top.
But since people don't like fading into the background, they've had to politicize pretty much everything that makes its way into the news just so voters remember they exist (and hey, why not try to funnel another half percent of the country's wealth to the top while they're there, amirite?)

I mean its not always good to trust someone just because they're licensed though. You don't just trust a cop because he's been licensed to protect you. That they do slow down the spread of a virus, but not 100 percent of the time and not enough to warrant mandatory use.

@@suskdndjdhs5551 He was right how? Early on, Trump constantly said that it would "go away" and that nobody ever expected a pandemic so he couldn't get any responsibility. After failing to respond early he then contradicted his medical experts on what to do (mask wearing, etc.) and encouraged people to try to get the virus with his crowd gatherings. The result was the US, the richest country in the whole world, the country with the most medical resources, one with a literal pandemic playbook and previous presidents (Clinton, Bush, Obama) being obsessed with preparing for a pandemic, bungled the pandemic and did worse than many poorer countries.

The thing is that in countries like the UK and Australia where people refuse to wear masks they are the extreme minority, and Australia even fines people for not wearing them. Meanwhile USA has a large portion of people (mainly trumpers) against masks, they are not some tiny minority
