Been playing for about 20 years, but never really figured out the fretboard. I spent most of my years sticking to pentatonic scales, blues scales, and power chords, and never knew any of the theory behind any of them. Lately, I've been trying to take things more seriously and really make some progress, and your channel is one of the best I've found on RUclips for lessons like this. You make things super easy to understand. The part at 2:54ish was an AHA moment for me, seeing those shapes broken down into little sections made it so much easier to visualize, especially when you called the top shape the "extension shape". Thanks for these videos man!
I've been Playing Guitar for 30 years or so now. I've been fortunate enough to have acquired "a Killer Guitar Collection" along the way on my "Life Long Guitar Journey".. I recently purchased Blue's Book, "Guitar Soloing Like a Pro" off of Amazon.. It's well laid out, easy to follow and not too bogged down with theory and unnecessary complicated blah blah.. It's really a Great Complement & Reference too his You Tube Lessons, easy to reference, I've already improved my playing by using it as a Fretboard Guide and learning tool and I "Highly Recommend" buying it.. It's the best $15 bucks youll ever spend and I believe, like me, will quickly improve your playing ability and enjoyment of the instrument we all love!!! Thank you Blue!!!! Please keep the Lessons coming!!! We all Love your Channel!!!! ; ) Boom!! : ) "Keep on Rockin'" my RUclips Friend and Fellow Guitar Enthusiast ; ) Happy New Year 2023 to All!!! ; )
I just ordered your 'Guitar Soloing Like a Pro - Book 1' from Amazon. I have been playing guitars for many years and find the way your explain things is clear, to the point, and ties many loose ends together. Thanks for the lessons and the book.
Sir - you are an amazing player and teacher… i recently found your channel and i am using your ideas all the time. I am even practicing… holy moly! thank you much
Guitar and brains are so interesting. I forgot I knew this. Write it all down and sat down to practice and fingers knew it all. Oh yeah I used to know this. Thanks for the lesson on guitar and brains.
Another great video! What you said at 8:22 is really important and not stressed enough. Much guitar instruction gives the impression that pros are thinking about advanced theory while soloing at 120 bpm, but the shapes, notes, theory, systems and licks we learn are not something we think about when playing live. We learn and practice them so they become habitual rote muscle memory, like riding a bike or hitting a golf ball. We aren’t thinking much when we perform.
Man, another great lesson, it's the caged concept without the confusion some players experience learning it. Took me a little while to see the caged linked with the patterns but once you see it makes perfect sense. Keep it up!
As I have come to expect from you, Blue, a very useful and well explained micro lesson on moving around the fretboard, with the goal of soloing in mind. I must admit though, I have seen this 'movement' pattern before, under different names. It's a great way to cover a lot of the fretboard whilst staying in key and not getting too lost in the process. Cheers 🍻
Thanks Teo, for the money, I think the Tribute is a great choice. Doesn't look as fancy up close, but honestly the playability is great, and it's the same pickups as on more expensive Les Paul's anyway. Thanks for watching!
@GuitarLessonsVancouver 100%. I mean, the main difference is binding and some more nitro layers but I actually like the stripped back look. And they have a satin neck! And they sound killer
Thanks Blue, great content. You may want to think about shifting yourself or the camera a bit so that your very cool skull with the horns isn't partially hidden and gets fully featured in the background. Cheers!
Great lesson! I have a quick question that I don't know if you cover in your many videos. How do you train your nails on your fretting hand so that they don't get in the way of your playing?
@@BarryFence Haha, I don't have fat finger pads. But I do have calluses. If you're getting a bit of pain, that will go away over time. If you're having trouble getting your fingernails short enough, I have had one student years ago who had that problem -- just because of the way his nails grow out of his hand, it was hard to cut them that short. Over time he was able to cut them shorter and shorter.
Hi Marty, I'll think about doing a major one too. The thing is, it might look very very similar to the minor. Let me think on that, if I can expand that to a whole video.
So in general the different pentatonic shapes are for a specific zone on the fret board but can be played in any other zone. Is there a particular reason to pick a particular shape over another? Great lesson Thanks.
We want all five shapes so we can play in any key anywhere on the fretboard, low to high, and later so we can change scales over different songs without having to shift far onbthe fretboard
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver Hi Blue, I went ahead and bought your 2 books, because you have some great lessons. I feel I've actually had lessons with you and wanted to support you too.
@@mabblers Cool thank you! You will find a link near the beginning of each book to a page you can download the audio samples from. Some people don't notice that so I mention it here. If you have problems finding them or downloading them you can get in touch with me though my website www.bluemorris.com Thanks!!
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver Hey Blue I was really tickled. I was doing the fist lesson in your book1 before I download the tracks. I did them according to what I thought was correct then I remembered you said there was a DL. I played it and was blown away. Back to the playing board. Wow you're a great player.
It is that resolve part that I am interested in where you said that the E gives some resolve; can't it resolve on any note in the first chord. A C OR E if it is a minor chord or A C# E in major?
Not sure which part in the video that is, but an E note resolves on an Am and an A major for that matter. It is the fifth of the chord. A fifth gives a lot of resolve. Not as much as the root A would, but still considered resolve.
I'm ruined.... After finding this guy here, I tried to go back and watch my regular videos..... Nope it's not even close can't do it anymore! This is the only guy to watch
AWESOME LESSON!! What confuses me is which shape to use in whatever key it's in..... Just when I think I get it, something proves me wrong.. My question is .. Can you start in the key of C and use a different pentatonic pattern or no matter what key I'm in, it always starts with The first pattern? Old ass covid guitarist let me have it LOL!! constructive crit is necessary! LOL
Hey man, your videos are very helpful, but I would suggest changing the titles a little bit. I’d be more willing to click at this having something like how to properly move up the fretboard with improvisation. Your videos are lessons, and I think the title of the reflects that would make me want to click more. Your title is catchy but doesn’t make me want to click cuz I don’t know the value. Not being a critic I just like you’re content and want to see you grow.
I used to have descriptive titles that clearly stated what the video was about, and I got almost zero views. No kidding, sometimes 12 views in an entire week. Since I started using these hyperbolic titles, things have improved dramatically. I don't like it either, but that's the way it is online. Thanks for the comment, I do appreciate the feedback 👍

Great lesson! I have a quick question that I don't know if you cover in your many videos. How do you train your nails on your fretting hand so that they don't get in the way of your playing?
Hi Barry, got to keep the nails on your left hand real short so they don't touch the fretboard when you push the string down.
