- Do you find that you tend to get lost on the guitar fretboard when you start a solo in any key that you're not as familiar with? If you enjoy improvising or playing solos, especially in minor pentatonic classic rock and blues genres, these tips will help you to never get lost on the guitar fretboard again.
These five tips will help you to tear up and down the fretboard without ever losing your place. Using only the landmarks on the low E and A strings, you can keep in mind what pentatonic shape you are in, and find the notes you need, instantly.
Do you really need to learn all the notes on the guitar fretboard? Maybe one day. But for now, using this system of "landmarks," you can use the low E and A strings as your guide.

Im 56 and have been learning all the shapes for years and positions but this video finally put the pieces together for me , this is one of those rare days playing that is a awakening a aha moment , thank you so much for this video
Fantastic! Glad to hear it helped. There's lots more like it on the channel and on our Patreon www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver Thanks for watching!
Exactly. I'm 55. I'm definitely can play. But the puzzle is solved and my Major side of life on guitar is made so much easier. Can't get enough of this. Rock on.
I'm almost 70 years of age, and have a mild form of autism, wherebye my brain cannot remember certain things. All my life Iv'e wanted to play guitar solos. After watching this video and noticing that it relates to visual patterns rather than relating to sequences, I feel more confident in my efforts, Im sure this will help a lot of people... Thank you.
Great to hear, thanks for commenting Jeff
Dude! U r proof it's NEVER too late! Never give up on your dreams! Well done! I decided @ 60 that I wanted to learn to play lead guitar. The big secret: WANT it - and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE (not to sound psychotic, but it's amazing how much better you play after 5 consecutive hours). Even my son(!) asked why I wasn't famous! Keep it up, Jeff! All the Best! As for GLV - you are SO relaxed in this video - and that makes us ALL calm the F down and focus on what you're teaching. Top notch! Cheers.
@@eziosuncle3018 I agree, wanting it sure makes a difference, and having fun practicing. If you're having fun too, then you're more likely to put in the practice. Thanks!
Nice !! Really like the way you broke this down !!! All with a great vibe too !! You didn't shred for 30sec. and scream and stick your tongue out. I hate that and he's popular. Anywho, great lesson. I'm in !!!!
@John McAleese Thanks John! No plans for screaming on this channel 😜
Holy Crap - this is the 2nd video I've seen by this guy - and having watch 100s of utube guitar videos - this guy is totally THE BEST
Thanks for the great feedback! Lots more coming to this channel and the Patreon www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
There are only a very small handfull that teach on this site that can remember what it was like to not get it, but they speak French and I speak English, or so it may as well be.,You speak the language of the average player, beginner to, some of us that have been playing for years with fakeable shredability in public, but don't understand how to break out of the " Easy shape" , and thank you for calling it that. Honestly, I wish some of these "teachers" could watch one of your videos and realize, We ain't stupid. we just need it explained right. You get it. Bravo!.
Thanks for saying, T C . That's really great to hear.
The Two systems combining at the end are like the Gates of Mordor opening. Just Wow.
Thanks! Glad it helped. Lots more on the channel like this.
That has got to be one of the most useful lessons ever all packed in 18 minutes. Can't thank you enough.
Awesome! Great to hear thank you!
The nicknames of the Shapes actually really helps....
I find it does, as it reminds us what they look like... what shape they are
Blue. No wonder your student lesson book is full. Fabulous teacher!!
Thanks Dennis!!
Light Bulb 💡 moment... pentatonics rooted on the 6th string, shape 1 back to shape 5...
Then rooted on the 5th string... shape 4 back to shape 3... very cool 😊
Exactly! 👍
Mind blown. Such a clear-cut visualization that provides you with so much information at a glance. You are right, you will never get lost! Bravo. So why is no one else teaching this?
Great to hear thanks! Lots more lessons like this on the channel and our Patreon www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
I've been playing for decades & have encountered several of the concepts you discussed here in past videos posted by other RUclips teachers. None of them have put them together in such a clear & concise manner as you have here. Thank you! You have just become my favorite RUclips guitar instructor. Pardon the pun, but you rock dude!
Thank you Bill!!! That's great to hear. Lots more coming on the channel and my Patreon.
What a wonderful navigation, thanks, can't get lost now.
Great to hear thanks!
This lesson was great food for thought. The idea of being able to travel up and down the fretboard now become a lot easier.
Thank you! Lots more lessons on my channel and our Patreon www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
Thanks, broke down in a way that finally understand.
Great thanks Allen!
This is the best video on moving around the fret board I have ever seen. Super easy to understand.
Funny B string really resonates with me. Always been the hardest shape to remember. Not anymore ❤
Good to hear, thanks Rick!
Just adding to what’s already said but feel strongly about how valuable your content has been for me. I’m an intermediate player for 25+ years who’s been inspired to really learn the instrument for the first time. I’ve found lots of great content but none that so clearly lays out a way to think and visualize the way you have. You’re clearly a great teacher and I’m so grateful to have found your content. It’s been the quickest route from theory to playtime. I’ll keep doing the work but you’ve made it way more fun. Thank you!
Wonderful thank you! Lots more coming here and on Patreon if you haven't already checked that out www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
Thanks Blue i am a big acoustic blues fan. Take care George Cornwall Uk.
Thanks George
Finally! Someone who clearly understands theory AND, is able to speak in laymen's terms. Thank you. You have my full attention.
Thanks Roy, lots more coming. Also will be launching a Patreon soon with much more content like this.
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver If you didn't already have my full attention, you would now, by 1. Even taking the time to respond, and 2. Responding in such a timely fashion. Very impressive. I went to your website and quickly discovered that your schedule is full, both in person (which wouldn't work for me anyway) and online. When combined with your YT channel, I'm sure it leaves you with very little time on your hands.
Now we don't know each other in the least and far be it for me to offer up any advice to you, but clearly, your style of teaching is in high demand. So I'm left wondering if you have or are currently considering some type of Video program that would allow you to leverage yourself out to a much greater student base. Perhaps even several so as to appeal to a wide range of students according to their skill level. I read your questionnaire on your website and I believe you have the ability to create a program that would benefit each category that students may fall under. And, each program could be progressive to the next one.
I'm just spit-balling here.
Thanks again for the quick response.
@@roymccarty6931 Thanks Roy! I am indeed working on that and more. I'm starting a Patreon very soon, just need to set up some things first. It might be later this week. And then at some point I will be finishing Book 2 to go with my "Guitar Soloing Like a Pro" book, and.... hopefully a video series based on those books. So lots planned, but of course, it's always just a matter of having the time to do it. Thanks for your encouragement 🙂
Man, I tell ya Blue; you have a friend beautiful way of teaching.
I've played bass most of my life and took up guitar since the cove lockup. Taken a shot ton of lessons online and man you've become way one of my favorite.
Love your work and appreciate what you put into it. Thank you so much from Edmonton!!
Haha...spellchek much...tsk
Thanks Shawn, glad to hear it!
Thank You Sooooo much for showing an easy to understand method of navigating the fretboard, I am 67 years young and have been playing mostly chords with some fills between since I was a teenager. Couldn't seem to grasp how to play leads or riffs without confusion and frustration. You have changed all that, It's fun to learn at any age and now my son and I can play together and I can do some of the lead parts as well. I really enjoy your channel and your method of teaching. Be well my friend.
Great to hear thank you!!
Great clarity in your lesson. All good teachers are capable of cutting through the fog, you did just that. Great lesson!
Thank you!
I have been playin' guitar for 20+ years and find your lessons thoughtful and useful. Some of the things you point out give me this "a-ha!" moment and "why didn't I ever notice that" moment. Cheers from Kentucky~!
Great thanks Joshua! Lots more on our Patreon too, patreon.com/GuitarLessonsVancouver
Love from France ! This lesson is great🙏🏻👍🏼🍒
Thank you! 😃
It's no surprise that your channel is doing well. Your teaching technique is very practical, clear, and workable. You have been helping me to understand the fretboard. Thank you very much. Please keep the videos coming!!
Great to hear! Thanks!
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver I feel the same way. Super job. Had to subscribe.
PEACE from Philadelphia.
@@johnmcaleese8459 Thanks John!
Thank you for the "connection"...!
Thanks Joseph!
You are a brilliant TEACHER. There are lots of guys who just show what they can do, but you can truly teach. A great teacher can simplify a complex subject and make it accessible. A bad teacher views others as competition, holds back and obfuscates.
Thanks for saying! That's great feedback and an interesting perspective.
You sure got that right!
I've watched a ton of these videos and usually come away scratching my head. Not so today. You have done an amazing job of explaining how to build a solo in any key, and you did it in a manner that even this simple-minded grandpa can grasp. Thank you! Now if I could just put it all together the way you do.
Thanks Gary! Lots more videos coming to this channel and to my Patreon www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
For some reason the fog clears when I watch your lessons and I 'get it' and am able to progress with a smile on my face when I pick up my guitar....which is getting harder and harder to put down! Thank you for the clarity that you present and I can say that your book 'Guitar Soloing Like a Pro' is presented in a similar way, and I encourage people to buy the book...they will never regret it. Have a great weekend, I know I will now!!!
Thanks so much realjumper!!!
well said, same here
Same here 👍🏻
Ok. Found Blue only a few weeks ago and he immediately made a huge positive impact. I bought his book as a way to say thanks. Now wondering, what’s the best way to use the book and the videos. Is there a process or a pattern to follow so they compliment each other. Hopefully Blue can shed some light but either way THANKS for your lessons.
Wow you are finally that guys that make me get it. So clear, so fun😂🎉🎉
Glad to hear it thanks!! Lots more coming
Good lord man. I’ve spent all this time (decades) noodling around stuck in easy shape and extended shape because I was afraid I’d get lost. This was a eureka moment. Thanks! Subscribed.
I cannot wait to hold my guitar once home, thats awesome technique, apprecite for sharing.
Cool that's a great feeling. Have fun!
So much to absorb, but WOW, when all the pieces come together ... 🤯 Mind blown !!! Blue, you have such a relaxed and friendly style of teaching. I'm loving it.
Thank you very much!
Hey hey...congrats on 10K. Great job!
Thank you RB!!
You have taught us so much man. You are a treasure. Peace.
Thank you! More coming this year!
SO far I have really enjoyed all of your videos and gotten more good information form you than any other site on you tube.
Awesome, thank you! Lots more coming here to this channel and lots more on our Patreon group www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
Watching this again, it's refreshing!
Thanks Jeff!!
Love it, just love it. can't be a guitar plyer and just like this stuff.
Thank you 👍
Great stuff, Blue. Many thanks.
I often find so-called 'shortcuts' or 'tricks' to be more trouble than they are worth, but this lesson was very helpful to me.
Cool thanks for watching 😎
Just excellent. Thanks.
Thanks Bob!!!
best teacher ever!!!
Pure gold - best 18 minutes of guitar video I've watched this year.
Thank you!!!
Blue best lesson ever!! I needed this 25 years ago hahahah! Still very useful for a long time beginner like me.
Thanks!! Lots more coming.
Excellent lesson!
Thank you Anthony!
Superb lesson.
Thanks! 😃
Just found your channel. It just popped up on my feed.. I subscribed. Great lesson. It took me years to learn this on my own before You Tube but your video really makes it easy and you should have way more subscribers. I like the repetition, it makes the info sink in. You asked for ideas, one I always look for is playing 12 bar blues and how to solo over the chord changes. I know there are notes to look for or you can change into the root position and play a little there but I still struggle. Playing over the 5 chord is my enemy, it never works out for me. I also like how you string the boxes together. I also liked how you force people out of position 1 as thats where we usually get stuck... Great video , keep them coming..
Another great lesson. I have been using the fret markers/dots on the E and A strings to find the notes. So on E string I use G,A,B as my reference points and on A string I use C,D,E to find the notes. I like what you have done here to locate the shapes. I had been playing E minor pentatonic key mostly starting on 12th fret so your method really helps me now to start lower on the fretboard.
Awesome thanks Tim
Thank you for the Guitar Class sounds good.
Thanks for watching 😎
Very helpful thank you ! You make it all make sense and it gives one the direction you need to practice the pentatonic scales both minor and major. I love it!
Really great lesson! Thanks a lot!
My pleasure!
Great lesson it really helped. Thank you.
Great to hear thanks 😊
I have learned this through practice but this is by far the best I have ever seen it explained!!!
Cool thanks Bob!
Great lesson thanks.
Thanks Terence!
Hey, Blue. Your approach to teaching really resonates with my current ability. Like some of the other posters here, I’m well into my 60’s and consider myself to be a perennial beginner. But since discovering you & becoming a Patreon customer, my abilities have markedly improved. I love your little catch phrases like “easy shape”, “extension shape”, “symmetrical shape” & the most awesome is the “pinky /pointer” concept to move between minor & major pentatonics. Thanks so much.
Thank you Matthew! I really appreciate the great review!
Best fretboard/pentatonic video I've seen so far! Thanks so much for the clear teaching and the diagram downloads 😊
Glad to hear it thanks Steve!!
Thank you Blu Morris! I don’t know how you got in my feed but this lesson laid out exactly what I’d need trying to figure out in my head at this moment in time. Thank you! Your lessons are great.
Cool thanks for watching. Lots more videos coming!
Thank you ! It was a very good coarse and the way you explained the scales made it easy to fallow
Thanks for watching 😎
well put!!! keep it coming bruh!!
Lots more coming 👍
Really well done. Clear, concise, understandable. Thankyou!
Thanks 🎸 😊
Very good one, thanks
Glad you liked it!
Nice work. Easy to follow. Keep it up. Great Job!
Thanks Mike! Lots more coming.
It helps me a lot.. nice topic..
Thanks Lloyd
Great video, Its like you took what I already understood about scale shapes and helped locate them anywhere on the fretboard
Glad it helped!
Excellent, very practical way to look at the fretboard. I wish I had been taught this approach years ago.
Good to hear thanks!!
Once again Blue, excellent!
Thanks Tony!!
I commented a while ago about how I like your strategy of giving each shape a memorable name. It’s been much easier than giving the patterns #s because going from Major to Minor gets confusing.
I call the “funny B string shape” the “stair case shape” because of the 3 high strings. Great lesson Blue!
Nice! Staircase shape is a great name for it.
I call it One-Eyed Jack
Great video! I know that easy shape and the extensions and how to do that run easily, but I never knew I could connect it with all of these other shapes. I'll be watching this multiple times in the coming weeks
Cool thanks!
I started understanding a lot of things, which seemed abstract to me for quite a while, after watching your videos, so you started unlocking for me the whole chain of unconnected things which I was not able to connect myself
Good work helps a lot. Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for watching 👍
This is great Blue! I’m ok with the different shapes now but when connecting them up musically, I get stuck & panic, until now! This really helps me to visualise where I am on the fretboard. Thanks for this tutorial buddy 👍🏻🏴🎸
Great! Glad it helped 👍
You are the Best. Thank you, Mind blowing, Eye opening. Please keep it up. And thank you again. I will have to see this video many times because it has a lot of great information! and because I was not such good guitar payer, until I found you,
Thank you! Lots more on the channel and our Patreon!
All about simplifying and visualysing! You are a genius among guitar teachers Blue! Thanks for rethinking those concepts and making sense of them ❤
Glad to hear! Thank you for saying!
You are a top notch RUclips teacher
That's awesome thanks so much. I finally understood the relative shapes thanks to you!
Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks Blue, it is always nice to refer back to your videos to help jog one’s memory. This video , in particular, does just that for me. Again, thanks
Good to hear thanks John!
Blue Man, you have a laid back way off teaching that seems to get your topic across easier than many instructors.
Ive learned many simplified techniques from you, bravo
Glad to hear it, thanks for the comment!
I have seen millions of YT videos but this lesson really stands out. I thought I knew the best YT teachers until now… I have subscribed to your Patreon after watching some more videos. There is so much to learn. Congrats for your style , your approach, the visuals, the music, etc… excellent job.
Awesome thank you so much!!
Well done ! Easy to understand and direct, without any filler.
Thanks B P
Thank you so much you have finally simplified the chords. And made it easier to play a little lead with each chord 9:51
Thanks Ray!
I know the 5 pentatonic shapes and I love how you explain them in this video. Your diagrams make the concepts very clear. This video gives me confidence to start soloing and have some fun. Thank you so much. I'm so glad I found you online. Craig Ewinger
Thank you very much.
Nice and simple without to much music terms.
Glad it helped!
Hey blue, this is again super cool! I have used both systems for long now but never connected them using the root on the a string. Keep up the good work and thanks a lot for your videos. Highly appreciated :-)
Great thanks Alex!
Oh man! i put together charts a few years ago when i started teaching myself, this affirms a lot of what i thought and just helped me click SO much together. Don't know how long i've had this video in the 'watch later', but man am i happy to be watching it now. Thank you so much
Thank you! Glad to hear it's helping! 😊
You are now my favourite RUclips guitar instructor! I can't wait for your soloing book to arrive tomorrow!
Cool thanks for getting the book!
Killer lesson, dude. I've been stuck for a very long time and this was eye opening. Thank you.
Glad to hear it! Lots more on the channel.
This is one of the best tutorial i watched. As a beginner studying solo. This explanation enlighten my mind about how to use the 5 pattern run on a fretboard. Good explanation compare to the other tutorial i watch.🤩👍
Awesome, thank you!
Finally, you're THE guy that puts it all together. Thank you so much!
Thank you! Lots more guitar lessons like it on the channel and our Patreon www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver

Good stuff, thanks!
Thanks again for watching 🎸
This lesson was very enlightening to me at this point in my playing, great job, subscribed immediately
Welcome aboard!
Excellent way to relate it and put it all together! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Great stuff
Thank you Tyrone!
I love this guy’s teaching style
Thank you! New lesson out tomorrow 🎸
You have some really good content bro. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, will do!
This is the best pentatonic lesson ever!!! Thank you so much!!
Glad you like it! Thanks Ian!
Keep it simple ❤ you're doing great
Thank you Avi!!!
Another great video. Thanks very much for explaining the things in this way to get a better understanding.
Thank you! I'm hoping to launch a Patreon with more content like this very soon. Announcement this week.
Another older beginner here. Great lesson, great teacher! I’ve been blindly just learning the 5 shapes but had no idea how to apply them. Some teachers show little pieces to play as “tricks” or riffs but not bigger picture of the shape where they came from. This really pulled it together for me. Also very clever how you break concepts into 2s, then those two into 2s so everything seems connected not memorization.
Thanks!
Great to hear thank you! Lots more lessons on the channel 👍
Thank you. Love the way you get concepts across. You remove the 'cobwebs' and help 'declutter' many years of learning on you tube.
Thank you that's great to hear! Everything can become clear over time. Lots more lessons like this on the channel and our Patreon group www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
Awesome! I learned so much already. You really have a way of connecting the dots. Thanks so much!
Thanks Klaus!!!
