    I note that they didn't actually list the reasons for a bov/bypass valve...
    It has nothing to do with dyno pulls.
    Use on a diesel would be pointless, as there is no valve to stop/restrict the airflow going into the intake ports of the motor, so there is no pressure wave to damage the turbo, or pop off the intake hoses. (Unless you are doing some ridiculous high speed load, and stopping the motor dead-in which case it won't last long anyway....)
    The bov/bypass valve was engineered to:
    1. Prevent pressure spikes from bending/folding the throttle plate.
    2. Prevent pressure spikes from back feeding the turbo compressor, acting as a brake, possibly bending fins, breaking the shaft between the turbine and compressor wheels...
    3. Slow the boost pressure drop (pre-throttle), so that you have the turbo still spun up as you shift the gears in hard acceleration.
    A BOV vents to atmosphere, this creates a momentary rich condition (you can get flames out the tip of the exhaust depending on setup), and requires almost no plumbing. As stated, this can also trigger computer diagnostics, and safety measures, depending on the complexity of the engine computer. This momentary rich condition can mimic that which you get with a carburetor.
    A Bypass valve, vents to the intake track pre boost device (turbo/supercharger/blower), but post air measurement (if so equipped). This allows the computer to have a better idea of how much air is in the system. And can allow a little (very minor) help in spinning a turbo. Also being that the air escape is part of the closed system, if there is a failure, and it sticks open, or the valve sealing fails, you don't have to worry about dirt and debris entering the intake system, or so much that unmetered air is entering exiting the system.
    Who should consider them?
    Those with motors than run boost and have throttle plates.
    What does it do?
    Decrease turbo lag, protect against damage from pressure spikes in boost motors with throttle plates.
    This comment requires no replies. It was likely stated earlier, but frankly I'm not wading through over three thousand comments, given the vitreal and spite I see in the first part of the comment list. This comment is not done in spite, but in education, for those that were hoping for facts.

    • @pave64
      @pave64 9 лет назад +9

      +George Mahfood Absolutely agree! But if I understood it right, the sound is caused by air returning through intake. Now isn't it a bad thing for a turbo lifespan?

    • @georgemahfood8743
      @georgemahfood8743 9 лет назад +5

      +pave64 I know it's really bad for a turbo over time but still the sound is amazing might not be worth the risk though

    • @christicristian06
      @christicristian06 9 лет назад +1

      +George Mahfood Depends, if you have a high boost turbo, you might wear out the bearing but you need high boost. It's just air passing by, slowing down the compressor, so you will have a bit more lag when you shift and the response won't be so good. It's not bad for the turbo, it's worse when you have high boost and all that air can't flow throught the system and preasure builds up until something breaks.

    • @DriftNick
      @DriftNick 9 лет назад +1

      +Cristian Ceclan There is no noticeable in lag between running a BoV and not, also there are a lot of people running 40+psi with no BoV's and never having issues, it's very common in Australia for people not to run them.

    That's what I was going to say. And actually, depending on your turbo setup, the type of BOV that you're using will actually make a difference. A recirculating blow off valve will help with surge between shifts but also allow you to keep your boost pressure up higher since it puts it back into the system. This surge that occurs when a BOV is not in place can cause a fuel enrichment issue and cause your vehicle to stall, but this is not always the case as it depends on the size of the turbo.

  • @dosmastrify
    @dosmastrify 8 лет назад +73

    why the dyno with the blow-off valves? the guy just said they only matter when you let OFF the throttle. he said the valves are only ment to maintain spinup between shifts

      Because most factory BOVs are designed to leak at a certain pressure, they don't actually leak as such, they open at a preset pressure which is usually just above the factory boost spec. Not only that but factory valves are easily modified so that they hold boost and therefore you don't need to replace with an aftermarket valve..........but that's bad for business.

    • @dosmastrify

    recircing the BOV is very important if you are running a MAF before the turbo instead of a MAP in the manifold because if you release the air to atmosphere when running a MAF, then you are completely ruining your A/F ratio as you just vented air that the engine is expecting and dumping fuel for. Can have a big effect on 1/4 mile times as your A/F gets messed up for a second at each shift. can make for a nice flame thrower exhaust, though.

      ***** It is that bad. Especially on vag engines.
      To a point even, when they start boging and surgeing on gear change.
      Usually the diverter is set to open at certain level of boost - so should the BOV be - but many set it to too easy and that causes additional problems.

    Blow off valves aren't intended to make power. What they do is release the pressure on the turbocharger when the throttle plate is closed, making the bearings and other internal components last longer.

    I just traded my 2011 Ford Taurus SHO for a 2015 with 10 * more bells and whistles. I was looking at getting a new one since they are discontinued which happened in the past but then they were brought back. Jesus with a credit score of around 780 I was looking at just over $700 a month. I make $29.96 an hour so the money is pretty good but no way could I make a $700 a month car payment LOL. I just really love the sho's it's a fast car but does not raise your insurance. I really wanted to swap out the factory valves with vent to atmosphere unfortunately that would really lower the performance. I wish I could find the ones I was looking at as they recirculated but managed to vent to atmosphere without impacting performance. Great video as usual!

    Recirc valves are very important on some cars, specifically ones that use the MAF to determine how much air is in the intake system and adjust fueling proportionally. If the blow off valve lets the air out, but the fuel still gets dumped in, you can run extremely rich, which will then cause the short term fuel trim to lean out. Then you get back on the throttle, run lean, blow your motor, and blame it on the tune.

  • @TripoliVegas

    The reason I have a recirculating BOV on my Subaru is to help maintain boost between shifts, because of my larger aftermarket turbo. I think atmospheric BOVs are stupid and solely for an annoying high pitched purge sound. Obviously it's to blow off the massive surge pressure from the turbo, but be smart and use that surge pressure to hold boost with a recirculating bov

    • @kcolley42

  • @atarparker

    I thought the benefit of a recirculation valve over a bov was seen by slightly quicker spool up AFTER the gear change?

    • @tgw230
      @tgw230 3 года назад

      Yes exactly, this is a crappy video, the whole statement is misleading about venting atmospherically versus diverting, because the power will be the same but what you gain by having a diverter valve is quicker throttle response because you're not losing that boost charge and needing to respool that boost charge from scratch so to speak. So the test should not be total power output but rather throttle response right after a gear shift (when you step off the gas in the course of a shift)

    I can't believe all the people who want the turbo flutter sound. To me, it's right up there with knocking rods, piston slap, and maladjusted valve lash. It's the sound of failing parts.

    • @DriftNick
      @DriftNick 8 лет назад +6

      +Tony Tuite But it's not parts failing, if it does cause any damage then it's so small you wouldn't even notice it over the life span on the turbo, plenty of people not running a bov for years without issue.

    • @securi-t
      @securi-t 8 лет назад +2

      Sorry, but you're wrong. Take my Holset HX35 for example. It has an 83mm diameter exducer. Converted to inches, that's a diameter of around 3.25", or 1.625" radius. Take Pi*1.625^2=~8.29 inch surface area. I am running 21 psi of boost. Now take 21*8.29=174 pounds of thrust load slamming into your compressor wheel every time you shift. That will quickly add up to permanent damage to your thrust washers and bearings, not to mention your compressor wheel over time. Add in the effect of this Shockwave exerting reverse force on the turbo, and that is a lot of damage fast. You may get away longer on a small turbo, but if your making real power you need a BOV.

    • @DriftNick
      @DriftNick 8 лет назад +4

      Tony Tuite Your numbers don't mean shit, in the real world it really doesn't matter, not to mention they are designed to take that kind of load.
      " You may get away longer on a small turbo, but if your making real power you need a BOV."
      In Australia and Japan it is very common for people not to run BoV's (especially in the VL turbo and drifting scenes), including people making well over 1000hp without issue.

    • @DriftNick
      @DriftNick 8 лет назад +4

      Tony Tuite You know what makes me right? the countless people who don't run BoV's and haven't for many years without issue, your math doesn't mean anything, your wrong about the amount of load it would be hitting the compressor, it's not as simple as the size of the surface area times the boost and all the load wouldn't just be hitting the compressor.
      so yea I will do what a want and for some reason I think my turbo will be just fine like it has been for the last 5 years.

      You don't measure *bhp* on a dyno like that. You measure *_whp_*, which is after probably a _15% loss_ due to transmission. You can either adjust the bhp measure for drivetrain loss or add 15% to the whp number the dyno read out. If you do that, the numbers seem consistent (about a 11 bhp gain).

    • @docwylee1891

      Faster doenst always mean more power on a dyno. If your bov is dumping too much air between shifts you would effectively be killing the efficiency of your spool. Re-circulation aims not to do that by dumping vented air back into the intake system. How much faster.. its hard to say but i would be willing to bet that a recirc car with identical driver conditions will perform better than a poorly selected all for noise vent to atmosphere set up.

    Whether you should vent or recirculate depends on the design of the intake. If the incoming air is measured by the airflow sensor BEFORE it goes through the turbo (like if the airflow sensor is in the air filter box), then you must use a recirculator valve, or else the ECU will be momentarily confused by air that was measured by the airflow sensor but never delivered into the engine, and that will throw off the fuel:air ratio and change the long-term fuel trim in the ECU. You can't just pick and choose which version you want to run, unless you feel like redesigning the entire intake.

    Pay more for insurance? I pay less for my 2015 WRX than I did with my Ram 2500 HEMI or even my 2013 Tacoma. I believe i was about $20 less than the Ram but only $6 less than the Tacoma.

      With full coverage, $500 deductibles, going from a 2014 Mirage (i3, 1.2L, 74hp, 0-60 in 12 seconds) to a 2014 evo (i4, 2.0L w/turbo, 290hp, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds)... insurance went up almost $40, from $105 to $141. My 2011 Camaro was $130. It's more, but fairly insignificant when you consider the cost of the cars (Mirage 13k, Camaro 27k, Evo 40k).

    The blow off valve has two purposes. The primary purpose is to prevent turbo surging where high pressure air is forced backward up through the inter-coolers and back through the turbo. This surge can damage the turbo bearings; both shaft bearings and end bearings. The second purpose is to prevent over-pressures that can damage boost feed pipes and inter-coolers.

    Recirculated BOVs don't add power, therefore not making your car faster... Just like how lowering your car doesn't add power.
    Come on, there's more to speed than just power. Recirculation holds the boost, keeping the compressor ready for the next shift.

  • @kevinmonahan2820
    @kevinmonahan2820 10 лет назад +5

    That was stupid. You will not gain or lose power with a bov. A recirculator will simply allow the turbo to spool faster after a shift because that air is rerouted to before the turbo rather than venting to atmosphere. And the reason you run rich after putting a bov on is because on a system that uses a maf sensor the ecu is injecting fuel for the air you just let out into the atmosphere. You will only run rich for a split second after getting back on the throttle. The only way to get around that is to delete your maf sensor and only base idc's off of a map sensor.

    • @smgs921
      @smgs921 10 лет назад +1

      Actually on a VW using a BOV will lose power. They use diverter valves instead. The BOV loses pressure dropping boost after a gear change AKA when it opens up

    • @kevinmonahan2820
      @kevinmonahan2820 10 лет назад +2

      Obviously you didnt understand what I said. You will NOT lose power. Your engine will make the same amount of power with a bov, bpv, or no valve at all. Bov's have no affect whatsoever on power. You will lose spool time after lifting off the throttle then getting on it again.

  • @BeulahLips
    @BeulahLips 10 лет назад

    Question: Since the vacuum hose to the bypass (BOV) valve goes to the intake manifold, wouldn't that line also be under boost pressure when the car is under boost, and therefore, serve to assist in keeping the valve closed by providing the same pressure on both sides of the valve, essentially cancelling any boost pressure trying to push the valve open?
    In other words, it should make no difference how much boost the car is making since whether it's 3 psi or 20 psi at the intake, that same amount is being fed to the BOV piston or diaphragm, therefore equalizing and cancelling the 3 psi or 20 psi that is at the intake and other side of the piston or diaphragm in the BOV.

  • @HAWX4
    @HAWX4 8 лет назад

    so correct me if im wrong, but isnt a BOV supposed to make the car quicker, not faster? The whole point is to maintain boost between shifts and shorten the time it takes for peak boost to be achieved, right? Wouldnt that result in a faster acceleration and not a higher top speed? or am I misunderstanding something?

    from 2:30 to 3:10 is the only useful info in this video... the usefulness of a recirc valve or BOV is only seen in actual driving conditions and has no effect on peak power... putting the car on a dyno was pointless.

      @Servicemember80 9 лет назад +1

      The dyno also showed what happens to factory turbo cars running high boost tunes - they cant hold the additional pressure and leak boost robbing you of power --- thus a NEW blow off valve would actually give you more power while also adding to the sound of the car ---- hi boost tunes on those GTIs crank it up to 20-22psi from a factory peak of like 12 or so

      Jake Kynezos the correct conversion is

You said the exact same thing as Jake Kynezos except you changed the ratio to 1.36 instead of 1.34? And EVEN STILL you wrote it wrong.... The correct form by today's mathematical standards for linear equations is f(x) = x(1.36) Utter and complete failure.

    Nice explanation and good explanation on why its good to NOT let all the pressure out and not starting from empty ,,Lads need to know its NOT all about noise when it comes to performance : )

    Honestly I didn't install the blow off valve that came with my turbo kit just so I could get the stututu while revving at the local car meets.
    Roses are red
    Violets are blue
    I have no blow off valve
    so my turbo goes stututu

      Get a blow off valve it'l reduce strain in the turbo.

      Both if done as a package are a valid enhancement....BOV on a naturally aspirated engine would be the same as stuffing yer wifes bra to make ya think she was 34DD..

    I once had a 2001 Ford Focus with the 2.0 ztec. I put on a AEM true cold air intake and when I shifted i had enough pressure in the intake that if I was on the gas and let off into the next gear it would make this noise. Would imagine with enough time invested and electronics you could make something that hooked onto the intake that would make it sound like a real blow off valve but it wouldn't be as loud.

    hold up. all a blow off valve does is get rid of boost, which helps not put any stress on the motor after you get on it and build up boost with a turbo, im not sure they come on super chargers. on a pro stock pulling tractor, they use them to get rid of the boost thats 40+ lbs. it doesnt give you anymore power in a car. just makes tuners sound "cool"

    • @DriftNick
      @DriftNick 10 лет назад +10

      Blow off valves don't do anything on throttle as they are closed till there is vacuum (off throttle), you might be confusing it with the wastegate which bypasses exhaust gasses around the exhaust to limit the boost it makes.

      equoowe They are closed until off throttle, but its the pressure or spike thats opens them. No vacuum.

      Tim Oliver "They are closed until off throttle, but its the pressure or spike thats opens them. No vacuum."
      One side of the blow off valve is connected to the intake manifold. When you close the throttle a vacuum is formed between the throttle and the intake valves. This vacuum is is what allows the diaphragm inside the blow off valve to be actuated- Its both pulled by this vacuum, and pushed by the boost- But it is the vacuum that allows this action to occur in the first place (more specifically its the pressure differential, but i digress)

      SidewaysGts hit the nail on the head.
      Although it really depends on the setup, whether or not boost assist the vacuum. Several manufacturers, mostly european, use strictly vacuum on recirculating valves.

      Marlon Lyn your turbo insatll didnt go as planned? im tryna decide weather to boost my civic or get a wet nos kit. what type of car did you boost what went wrong? 5k?

    • @marlonlyn2719
      @marlonlyn2719 9 лет назад

      Michael Mack Honestly I was just joking, but if you're planning on boosting there are a couple of questions that have to be asked:
      1. How old is the car?
      2. Are there any pre-existing issues inside the car?
      3. Do I have access to a Subject Matter Expert that's already done this?
      4. Do I have access to do work on my car after it's been bosted?
      I boosted a 2002 GTI VR6. Still having issues and not %100, but I'm hoping to resolve all of them.
      the 5k comes from the price from all the stuff, plus hardware. Believe me, it adds up fast. Hit me up and we can talk more about it.

      luis luna if you dont know what you are talking about, shut the fuck up, a 350z auto tranny will handle boost just fine. spoox just research!

    • @hackeysackmage
      @hackeysackmage 10 лет назад

      Absolutely not. Turboing a 350 is very touchy, and even paying a shop tons of money to do it properly the engine WILL NOT handle boost very well. This is the failing of the VQ35 in the 350. Boost + VQ35 = not good. Doing it yourself also adds in the factor of you probably doing something wrong, then paying tons of money for dyno time to tune it. I you want more power swap your transmission, do exhaust and intake mods. Then forged internals and an ECU remap. DON'T TURBO OR SUPERCHARGE YOUR Z.

    • @717beto
      @717beto 10 лет назад

      Fuck man why so the fkn negativity its just a comment... lets be realistic even though you love 350 z's most stock automatics will break unless modded. youc ould off just made your own comment and no need to insult people... are yo on your period or something? lol

      He might be right but nissan has been boosting motors for a long time. FYI a boosted motor kicking out anything near 100% of it's factory hp (like if your motor came with 200 and you boost it to 400) will only last about a year regardless of how you build it. The only way to get the longevity in it is to start with a motor that is overengineered like theh 4g63 or even subarus 2.5 boxer. I say this. If you want to boost the engine and you want to keep it reliable go with a supercharger. The boost is predictable and easily tuned. Next don't go over 8lbs of boost. That's the industry standard. Every car on the market can handle that from the factory. Lastly if you want to REALLY get power I'd still go supercharged but add internals and supporting mods and boost in the area of 15psi. After that you'd be better off building a motor for turbo.
