Mithos was always my favorite character of all time, because I see myself in him. I know that pain and being stuck in the past, not being able to move forward, refusing anyone's help and refusing to accept what happened. Even twisting reality, telling Martel she would reject him, which is not the case. She loves him, but she doesn't agree what he is doing. But for Mithos that hurts so much and feels like being wrong, not wanted and rejected. It hurts so much, that he gets crazy... I know that pain too well... And I understand his anger and despair. Even though I also disagree on what he was doing, I truly understand him. Seeing Mithos as a 12 year old child speaking with Martel, I saw myself, with all the trauma I experienced.
And in a way, I feel that pain, half-elves were feeling.
And I really like the name Mithos. :-)

I was not only struck by the idea that someone could so anti-racist that it would move them to orchestrate the most brutal initiatives that our own history has seen of systematic discrimination, for millennia on end, but also by how similar those feelings were to everything I had internalized about the way the world perceived various groups that I fell into. In that regard, empathizing with what Mithos felt, while logically knowing what those feelings lead to, is what makes me feel horrified and ashamed of the state of equity activism as of the past decade.

But also, when I played the game the first time as a child, I thought he wasn't moving to show that his body is even more seperated from his soul / the crystal then it was before. I think the most fantastic concept of this game (for me) is that this game not only explores one world, but two worlds. In the gamecube two disc version, we already venture from Sylvrant to Tethealla in the second half of the first disc. By this point I was so excited for the second disc's development and climax, I couldn't wait to finish the Tethealla Arc of the first disc. The fact that you have to save both worlds is so fantastic.

Race is one of them but prejudice comes in so many forms and harms so many different types of people, the message doesn't become less effective just because one specific group in particular isn't highlighted (and the use of a fantasy race as a stand-in is probably for that exact reason).

On a personal note, a decent amount of my personal beliefs and convictions were shaped by this game. It’s core message that everyone has a right to life, even those who fall through the cracks, has always stuck with me. Lloyd’s hatred of senseless violence and destruction was always so powerful.
Additionally, I grew up in a small, nearly entirely white town, so I never really had an opportunity growing up to see the evils and horrors of discrimination and racism. This game is what taught me those lessons.

Tell me, how many people you don't like are you going to brand "fascists" before the word loses meaning altogether? How does shrieking at every small infraction, regardless of the offender's intentions, make them want to change their behavior or educate themselves? Is ruining someone without understanding their point of view your idea of tolerance? At the end of the day, your hysterical approach ISN'T going to end bigotry because it's the exact same approach that Mithos took; fracturing society into groups, setting them against one another, sacrificing the people that fall through those cracks and purging anyone who isn't like you because you can't get past your own victim complex and fragile ego.

    • @CrowTR0bot

@@Mnemoniforma9.00 Dude, antiracists aren't the ones dividing society. They're pointing out the divisions that are already there so we could overcome them.
That "individual liberty" you harp on about is a useless boondoggle that was used to aid and abet dividing us so we wouldn't mind when our peers' civil rights were disregarded, often lethally. And now that people of color have the gall to demand fairer treatment, you throw a tantrum over it. And claim they have a "victim complex" for seeing their kind brutally murdered by cops and other bigots who face no consequences for it, and being afraid that they'll be next.
We don't tolerate intolerance. Doing so will inevitably lead to a society lacking in tolerance.

@@CrowTR0bot Stop putting words in my mouth. I DON'T support police brutality. I know full well there are cops and racially motivated scumbags who have gotten off when they shouldn't have. Of course marginalized communities deserve fairer treatment than what's been offered. But I also don't support draconian bullshit that harms the basic rights to free expression and association for everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity or gender identity. Bullshit I might add, that is NOT pushed by these communities for their equity, but rather, a ruling class that wants to stifle dissent and control the narrative. But I'm not going to assume that you've been similarly co-opted. Because I believe that people have all sorts of reasons for their political views, that aren't intrinsically shaped by a desire for racial superiority or a desire to silence differing opinions; immediately assigning onus for by which labels they outwardly present, instead of their intentions and content of their character, is the exact sort of intolerance that as you say, we should not be tolerating.

So my two cents: Tales of Symphonia has since I played it in the mid 2000s been one of my all-time favourite games. At the time of my first play I didn't completely grasp how different it was from other RPGs in terms of story. I remember playing it and originally imaging it as a typical but good fantasy game with swords, magic, elves, angels etc and the first third did seem pretty standard in terms of the story and I imagined Colette would become an angel, save the world and everyone lived happily ever after...
But then when I realised what the entire process was doing to Colette it did confuse me. To paraphrase how I remember feeling, the party was starting to save the world during this first-third and they were getting closer and closer to winning... except Colette: she was losing (that is so much of her self). It baffled me: they were saving the world but because of what was happening to Colette and how the party were reacting it didn't feel good, it felt unhappy, unlike traditional fantasy adventures. It threw me.
Then after the first-third of the game and we ended up in Tethe'alla: By that point I was thinking 'What the hell is going on!?' and it rattled me. So much had happened: The female lead and 'chosen one' lost her emotions, we defeated an angel, got been betrayed by a party member, got powderised by the main antagonist, escaped an enemy fortress and ended up in a whole new world that could have been even more dangerous. It was great and such a high point for the game. Very little in a game has compared to that ever since.

This was a great watch, a good video essay! I have to say, you mirrored a lot of my feelings and thoughts in this. Symphonia is not only my favorite Tales game, but my favorite game, period. I, too, thought it had a rather generic-sounding premise when I first started playing it. I thought "oh what the heck this sounds pretty standard. You got your RPG party with your chosen one, you gotta go to different temples of different elements." etc.
I was 15 when I played the game. I was a dumb teenager at a time but I did pick up on some of the foreshadowing... I didn't really speculate on what was going to happen, but throughout the first part of the game I was filled with this I don't know... general sense of unease, as if something wasn't quite right... and it was all a result of many of those little moments you pointed out. This unease, this weird curiosity made me more invested in the game's world and its characters, because by the time we were just about to reach the Tower of Salvation, I was absolutely *sure* that things wouldn't pan out how the party expected it to... But I was shocked nonetheless.
Honestly? Kratos betraying us kinda sucked but he always came off as rather shady so I wasn't all that blown away by it when it happened. The *real* gut punch came in the form of Colette becoming a soulless husk. I gotta add that I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with characters like her. They are too pure, too innocent, too saccharine for me... but as you said, there was after all, an inner darkness to her, a struggle she chose not to present to the world. Anyways. Despite my distaste for her character archetype, I'd actually gotten to like her!... and then the game just pulls the rug from under our feet and takes her away. All of a sudden, her cute, bubbly upbeat self was completely gone. What was there didn't feel like Colette anymore.
At this point you could tell that I wasn't only invested by a curiosity with regards as to what was going to happen... but now I was emotionally invested, too. I felt sad. I was overcome with that same kind of despair Lloyd felt. That feeling of "there must be something we can do! this can't be the end of it!"
I don't want to go too much into detail, as I'd have to type up an essay of my own hahah, but this game was quite meaningful to me as well. I was drawn into its world and invested in its characters and their stories. It also helps that I played this game during a time in my life when things were going relatively well. I was in high school back then. Today I almost done with my last year of medical school. It's been quite a journey. The stress this kind of life carries with it is nothing short of monumental, especially with the ongoing pandemic... But this is precisely one of the reasons why I look back on this game so fondly. It was not only a damn good story with damn good characters, but also reminded me of damn good times... comparatively speaking, of course. It's a bit cheesy of me to say this but... a story of perseverance and defiance of fate against all odds... is something from which I can take strength to go on. It might seem like a silly game to some, but it is an oasis of good memories for me, and thinking back on them is something that helps me move forward.
Apologies for the long comment, but I'd like to reiterate what I said at the beginning: this was good video essay. You have earned a subscriber and I look forward to seeing more from you.

Tales of symphonia is definitely a masterpiece and while other tales games are not terrible in fact most of them are very good depending on how you view and explore them.
Symphonias case however is very special cause on the one hand from what I could tell was o basically in the same situation as the creator for final fantasy was in. I think had symphonia failed where let's be real had they mistepped this could easily had been forgettable but this was a game that took them a long time to put together with what they had to work with.
Now yes the parallels between this and final fantasy 7, maybe 10 are there but there is one thing here both as a game and narrative that makes it stand as something that many people don't realize surpasses anything ff7 did and everything else square enix has tried and this extends to how other tales games after symphonia and to give credit where it's due where dawn of a new world aka knight of ratatosk manages to stay above others and that element is the power of choice.
The story of symphonia in its entirety is a well told masterpiece of a story but those hidden features the developers added are what also make this player influenced. Your choices affect the fates of the cast. Granted affection system and those seemingly unimportant choices if you find them in your playthroughs may seem unimportant but combining those 2 features shows and gives you the true symphonia experience where all its themes can be felt because of how you choose to handle them and these choices are what lead us to discover more about these characters in various playthroughs. Not say other tales main entries don't try as hard but they all lack a certain element that symphonia had going for it in how everything even how the player handles things all connect giving us a story that we connect to both figuratively and literally.

I do so love seeing my biggest childhood love getting the appreciation it deserves.
I was SO obsessed with this game back in the day. I played it over 20 times consecutively. By that I mean, starting a new game as soon as the credits completed. Not so much as a snack break. I lost so much sleep and missed so many meals for this game. Pretty sure I knew everything there was to know about this game at one point. I could have probably quoted it verbatim beginning to end lol
    Ah the memories...

Colette is an empowering female lead, but not in the way that everyone thinks of one. At the very start, from the sacrificial pilgrimage to the angelic powers to the ambiguous parentage, it is very clear that the title of Chosen is a Christlike position in the world of Sylvarant. But Colette's turn-the-other-cheek attitude, selflessness, and overall dedication to suffering are neither portrayed as righteous nor as strengths, but rather, as a form of learned helplessness shaped by the expectations of everyone living in Sylvarant. Her whole character arc is overcoming that learned helplessness and realizing her own personal value to her friends and reconciling her painfully deep love for the world and its people with the resolve to continue living, as well as the desire to live for herself. And that journey has her oscillating between the two poles of savior-paragon and damsel-in-distress, which I'm sure devalues her as a strong young woman in many people's eyes, but to me, that breaks several boundaries by distorting the societal preconception as to what an empowered female is and is not. That, combined with her personal foibles as an unassuming klutz who derails the conversation on a regular basis, makes her a very compelling figure.

I really love Tales Of Symphonia. The character I love the most is Zelous, which came as an absolute surprise to me. When I first met him I HATED him. He seemed a cocky, arrogant stuck up jerk. The fact that he just replaced Kratos who, despite betraying me, I still missed just made it all the worse. So, when I had the chance, I had him killed off to get Kratos back, but something about how he betrayed me and died seemed... off. It was like he WANTED to die, I even slipped up fighting him and he beat us and seemed VERY upset that he'd won.
So the next time I played through the game I did my best to become friends with him and HOLY HELL was I wrong about him.
He's not cocky and stuck up. It's all a front. He has massive Imposter Syndrome and thanks to his mother doesn't even believe he deserves to live. I didn't realize it on my first playthrough but him joining you was his LAST attempt at doing something meaningful with his existence. If you don't warm up to him his fears that nobody will even find worth in him outside of his predestined fate of the chosen are confirmed and he chooses to take his own life... by challenging you.
If you've never tried making him your "soulmate" I highly recommend giving it a go. There is so much he wants to share, he just needs someone who will believe that he is more than what he has been fated to become.

    I always liked villains and
Hardly any hero Lloyd although funny at times matures and is a very likeable hero with real struggles and with tough decisions. He’s always been my favourite hero because hes true to himself and what he knows and feels is right. And Mithos is an excellent villain because as he says I don’t regret my choices I’d do it all over again. He had a goal and a vision and was selfish enough to pursue it at all cost. Two heroes two different pasts.

Yes. I knew there was something special about the story in symphonia, it blew my mind growing up and I have ever since been baffled that it is not more highly regarded. I did nearly give up on it, in the first act before reaching the tower of salvation, because it does go into the tropes really hard in that section and it seems very predictable. Obviously there are a lot of foreshadowing events going on, but I was just a kid and I didn’t really pay a huge amount of attention to them. The first twist at the tower of salvation blew me away, but maybe the most memorable is where you find out the true identity of mithos, Martel, yuan, and Kratos. I was actually in disbelief.

I was thinking Final Fantasy X because Collette like Yuna is a chosen that will go through multiple trails and have to commit the final act towards their inevitable death.
However with Yuna her choice to not sacrifice ended up being the catalyst that later lead to Yu Yevons death. And thus the cycle for Sin is over forever.
As for Collette she ended up coming back as her soul was in the Cruxis crystal. Lloyd finds out who his dad is and they both join up to face Mithos and draw and end to their worlds being separated.

I don't know what I want more, a remake of this game or for them to just port the ps3 collection to ps4 already. It's like right in the middle between needing a remake and being perfect as it is. I'd rather get a remake of Tales of Destiny me thinks.
Also, really well put together analysis! It really explains all the things I enjoyed about ToS! At the time (and maybe even now), I hadn't really played too many jrpgs that delved into racism. Other than FF10 with the Al Bhed. And honestly, how on-the-nose they were about some of the fantasy tropes is actually what I thought was so interesting about the game. I love the fact that they just call them Chosen Ones!
In terms of deconstructing organized religion, I'd say Tales of Symphonia has the most in common with Final Fantasy 10. Yevon, Martel. Yuna, Collette. Pilgrimages of questionable efficacy lol.

on Aselia being a half elf isnt just being disliked. by being born you have committed a horrible crime which must be punished by torture, death, enslavement, torture, more death, torture, and then all of the above, oh don't forget the kangaroo court sham trials before repeating.
it is easily one of the most brutal settings to half elves I have ever seen.

They were all pretty unique, raine was stone cold steve austin of anime chicks, lloyd was a dwarf kid who wasnt really a dwarf, genis was a little magic brat, and sheena was a bimbo ninja definite unique cast. And collete was a savant who played dumb and solved all problems while giggling and saying woops.

You are wrong. Aselia, the World where Top takes place is Tete'alla and Sylvarant combined.
Dhaos is one of the angels or half-elves that left with Kratos to Derris Kharlan.
He isn't obsessed with Martel, he wants a seed for his own dying planeta, but he want Magitech to halt development, hence he attacks Midgar and so forth.
