Star Ocean The Second Story R is interesting because it’s been so long and no one thought we would get a remake, let alone a remaster. @@SweisSenpai you were probably thinking of the jp remaster for Second Evolution. the ps4/vita remaster for that never came to the west. but we got first departure so people were begging for it

That's what really makes this game. The story is alright but it's the characters and how they play off each other that makes this game so endearing and still hold up all these years later.

This looks to be the RPG of the year, and your review made it look even better! I cannot wait to get this. I never grew up on this pixel style games either so seeing this is fresh and unique. While there are a lot of features that make the game easier than the original version, such as shield breaks, dodging, and making it easier to gain levels, they also made it much harder to keep enemies in a permanent stun lock which could be abused to beat even some of the toughest bosses with ease.

This game is far more visually pleasing than DQIII Remake Octopath Traveler .. I hope they do this again for something like FF9 or 6 the ones fans want most from Square
t was developed by a the company founded by the Star Ocean 3, Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, and Valkyrie Profile Silmeria battle programmer. No surprise it was a masterpiece of a remake
renas AI is definintely way better as a healer. She always knows when to heal and runs around staying away from combat
Sure would be nice if she could cast a buff or two when she has nothing better to do instead of spamming Star Flare.
ya that part is a little annoying i wasnt thinking about her not using any buffs. But still a big improvement i think over the other 2 versions@@Eternalwarpuppy
i wished they gave opera a focus on healing option as well, i literally have to manually spam healing star coz she’s not healing when it’s needed. 😂
Now I gotta get this game and Eiyuden Chronicles Hundred Heroes! So, many good rpg games this year.

This was such a damn good Remake, it made me go play Star Ocean 6....Which was a terrible move. I went back to playing Star Ocean 2R again.
My advice to new players of the game would be to not use any of the guides online. It's very easy to make your characters overpowered very early, making even universe difficulty a cake walk. Beat the game legit the first time to have the best experience.
Star Ocean 2 DID come out here on PS1 in the west though. We didnt get the first Star Ocean until the PSP remake.

i finished my first playthrough in 48 hours. honestly this is still the only SO game i ever finished playing, i played the others but they just couldn’t keep me hooked.
This one has a better quality in many areas compared to the rest of the series even if I adore the series
To the purist argument: you just have to look at every title as its own game (remake or not), because at the end of the day it is its own piece of art. Then you can enjoy it differently and better in my experience.
And also then you don't feel the urge to have to go back to the "original" first, if you never played it. You just can enjoy it for what it is on its own.
Good points I think I will usually always prefer the OG but I need to give all remakes a try 👍
Great review! There's something special about pixel games that just stands the test of time. It's the charm, the way the characters express themselves in a limited way, etc. It's kind of difficult to explain, but if you know, you know. I think you understand after playing this game. lol This is why Xenogears should be remade in this way instead of 3D.

I have my mages on go all out and they devastate the field. They were always running out of mp until I got better gear to compensate. So much fun. My only disappointment is they changed one of the best op moves and what Claude says when he uses it. Tear into pieces….
The combat is amazing!! That’s funny I didn’t know they changed an OP move I gotta look that up
What I like was that there are cheese in early game BUT you have to either GameFaqs it or going out of your way to get it. The game will not let you know but there are more cheeses compared to the original version. Let's just say that the dev allows you to have fun for your discovery and Weapon Factor just opens a whole new can of whoopass.

@@SweisSenpai As the guy who played this game to 100% back in the PSX/PSP, the new stuff they added was just chef's kiss. They literally removed all of the annoyance from the original like technical errors, Even marker, PA on the spot instead of re-entering the town with PA activation , or better yet....all of the other underutilized mechanic like Spells, Art, Writing, or Cooking got MAJOR overhaul. There are so much stuffs to enjoy now. NG+ is the feature that I asked for SO2 for a LONG TIME!!
My gut told me to preorder.. Played a tad more of the demo last night and I’m impressed how polished it appears to be.. Anyways should be arriving today ironically.. Oddly I do sci fi themes every Monday or at least try to

While I enjoyed 16, I do agree I thought this exceeded it
Is max level still 999 ?
I have not maxed them yet so can’t say for sure on my end but online says 255 is max level
