Somewhere between 2003 and 2006, John Mayer learned how to sing properly lol. He’s always had that unique voice but, as you can see in the video, it was not very refined yet lol.
Most guitarist make faces and move their heads while playing. I was told by a guitarist, they do that to let the excess energy (a different word was used that I can’t remember) out of their bodies. They need to be sure it doesn’t come out through their hands while they play. I have seen some of the best guitarists do it. John is an amazing blues guitarist and he makes great faces while playing. Stevie Ray Vaughan , Jimi Hendrix, jimmy Page can all be seen doing it if you watch them live. Many others as well.

This song should have been Paisleys instead of Mayers. He's got a better voice and you can actually understand the words. Mayer sounds like he's ready to fall to sleep. Not a very good singer.
