Awesome ride, i did not realize the Joetsu Shinkansen had so many tunnels past Takasaki. But this is good to keep the trains running even in snowy weather. There are not many Toki trains that reach Niigata in 1.5 hours, most of them make more stops to cater to commuters in Saitama and Gunma prefectures. 2 hrs is still not so bad Tokyo-Niigata
Thanks for watching. Yes after Takasaki until Nagaoka it is mainly tunnel zone which is good for against heavy snow. This Toki No.311 is ultra fast type runs once per day to Niigata (Toki 312 is its opposite ultra fast type to Tokyo) Normal Toki runs about 2hours in full Joetsu Shinkansen which is really fast enough and yes it caters more passengers in between.
@@japantravel6368 I wish there was a few more Ultra fast Toki trains but i guess Niigata-Tokyo-Niigata is not as big of a demand as there is for commuters heading to Toyko, so JR East does not prioritize Toyko-Niigata. Much different than other Shinkansen lines, as usually the bigger cities have more service between them with less stops. Joetsu is a Unique Shinkansen since its more about getting to and from the outskirts of Tokyo into the city, but the speed increase to 275kph for most of the line has helped travel times. It was much needed after the retirement of the E4 trains.
Exactly! Compare with Tohoku (Sendai/ Morioka ) and Hokuriku Shinkansen (Kanazawa Nagano), Joetsu is less demanding and JR east may not pay more attentions for more express types. For a quiet Shinkansen trip, Joetsu is a good choice and stations in Niigata are so surprising. After retirement of slow E4 and now all upgrade to 275km/h, the trip to Niigata is more comfortable!
I want to ride the Joetsu Shinkansen with the new speeds, but I am not near Tokyo or Niigata so it's harder to try it. Hokuriku Shinkansen is possible but still a few hours north of Kyoto
I see.. then it is not easy to take Joetsu Shinkansen from Kyoto area.. (similar with me that cannot ride in Sanyo Shinkansen . Next year Hokuriku Shinkansen will extend to Tsuruga , I think it will be better for you.

大宮で停車中に車掌さんがずっと「この列車は終点新潟まで直通します」って案内してましたね。
