    Like all car companies, car models take 4 to 5 years to design. Ford knew from day one, through it's own testing before the truck was launched that it had all the problems. They did so to be first to market amongst the big 3. Their bean counters approved it as a calculated risk and went forward. Just like any other defect in a design. Sell it, take the money and apologize afterwards. This way they make money and then the dealer make money on the recalls and it keeps them happy. Same with the chargers. Ford probably has something in their agreement with Tesla about how well the charging software works with Fords vs GMs for the first year or two.

    Great point about Farley and his leader ship. The most incredible thing about the Tesla supercharger net work is how widespread it is. Imagine if back in whatever decade (say, 1970s whatever) General Motors or Ford or Chrysler just happened to own and operate the equivalent of most of the shell, Chevron, Exxon, BP, Circle K, Phillips 66, Texaco, and speedway stations on the freeways, and major, intersections, and at popular destinations. That is HUGE although we should also keep in mind that in the past people never had the ability to put gas or diesel into their vehicles at home unless they had a giant tank that was filled by a delivery truck.

  • @jmbpr1v8
    @jmbpr1v8 11 месяцев назад +11

    In 2016, Elon Musk invited all the OEMs to join the Tesla Supercharger build-out-there were no takers. Late really is better than never. Good on Jim Farley.
    One other thought... Putting a NACS plug on Blink, EVgo, or ChargePoint chargers will do very little to improve their reliability. As Peter Rawlinson said, it's like changing a screw top cap on a bottle of wine with a cork-it does nothing to improve the wine.

    • @bearcubdaycare
      @bearcubdaycare 11 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, it's clear that carmakers thought that they could make EVs go away, so they never went all in, like joining Supercharger. To be fair, it's Tesla decade plus of work that made proper EVs possible, and numerous didn't think it could be done, or not profitably.

  • @mikedx2706
    @mikedx2706 11 месяцев назад +3

    The Achilles' heal of EV's in the USA has always been the charging network. Tesla seems to be the ONLY EV maker to have recognized this and decided to address the issue, which has given Tesla vehicles a huge market advantage over all other V's msold in the USA. Tesla resolved the issue by building the best charging network with the best chargers. They are fast and reliable, and situated along the major nodes of the US Interstatee highway system. It was a no braienr, if you think about it. Henry Ford did the same thing with the Model T Ford models. Ford knew that the gas statiosn were few and far between in the early 1900's. He made the Model T's duel fuel vehicles which could operate on gas or alcohol, or any combination of the two. In those early days, most farmers had stills they used to make grain alcohol for consumption or for burning in their home's light fixtures. John T. Rockefeller, who owned Standard Oil, was always in a fight with Henry Ford, because Standard Oil wanted to dominate the gasoline and fuel market, so it got federal legislation passed which outlawed the operation of farmers' home stills for making alcohol.

    It's a hard to say.
    The Tesla network is the most expensive charging network with the highest and most fees.
    Also the gen 4 tesla connector is limited to 500 kw max.
    Whereas the ccs2 connector can handle 1200kw charging systems.
    So if you have a taycan 500+kw charge system, you will have slow charging all the time.

    I think that opening up the tesla supercharger network is good for other EV manufactures. While I don't think the decision to open up the Tesla network is necessary good for the company, it is totally in line with their mission statement of "Accelerating the worlds transition to sustainable energy." A big factor for lot of people in choosing to buy a Tesla is the supercharger network. I think Tesla have given that away for the "greater good" of all EVs.

  • @JorgeLausell

    Here's a freebie design suggestion to all the EV manufacturers, something I can make the persuasive argument to establish, complete with evidence.
    Make charging ports on vehicles on the passenger side standard.
    Simple. Powerful implications. Opens up a product market that is large in its own right.

    • @joelado
      @joelado 11 месяцев назад +2

      Or better yet make the location of the charging port part of the NACS standard and make it on the right side. This will allow for curbside charging in left side drive like in the US. You can allow the charger to be on the left side in right side drive countries if you like, but... @JorgeLausell I want to hear your persuasive arguments and evidence so I can added them to my arguments.

      @@joelado Useful for curbside charging. This makes for options to add charging stations to sidewalk parking. Like parking meters of old. Also market for robotic mobile charger that you can engage with an app & it does it all remotely.

    I dont think it was so much about how long it takes to charge. EA has 150, 250, 350kw chargers. Its about the reliability and pervasivity of the NACS network.

    Farley SHOULD have personally driven a Mach1 & Lightning on long road-trips... A YEAR OR TWO AGO! And paid Sandy Munro for latest tear-down info on Teslas to copy, reverse engineer the latest, best tech A YEAR or two AGO!
    Instead, Ford is trying to milk the gravy train, $70,000+ luxury ICE (gas, diesel) trucks that fewer and fewer Americans can afford what with inflation and higher interest rates. Meanwhile, Tesla keeps relentlessly improving technolgy AND LOWERING PRICES
