@@seaangling Mark have you thought about using a dongle (hair rig) with a clip on the end that fits onto a bait clip....whip your bait along the hair as such n not on the hook....
@@simonsmith6126 it has been suggested and I am now researching it. Looks very interesting and would help prevent deep hooked fish which on a skate isn’t the easiest thing to resolve. They have cavernous mouths as you well know. The dongle/dangle could be an elegant solution. 👍🏻😉🎣

HI Mark, love the videos and as a returning fisherman I have learnt so much from your ramblings. I am sure that you were setting up basic pulley rigs that you could use with different length snoods. Have you thought about dingle dangle? We use them a lot for big Kob and sharks and Rays here in Africa 🇳🇦. Traces are around 120-150 cm with 10/0 or 12/0 circle hocks. Just a thought.
It is the opposite, the weight of the fish pulls the weight up to the clip. The grip lead is then clear of snagging the bottom. There is one of my films showing a hooked skate with the weight clearly up high.

Leigh is an amazing skipper and always goes above and beyond to make the experience the best it can be. A 179lb fish is a lump and with 18 landed you must have all had a serious workout. I’m still chasing my first 200lb skate.
Hi Mark, Good looking Skate rig be interesting to see if it works properly. As you are getting into some serious heavy fishing, it might be worth looking at a company called Rok Max, they are specialists in big game, shark, heavy boat and popping/jigging tackle also good to deal with.
Hello Mark have you thought about getting the cox and rawle wire leaders they do weighted and unweighted in 400lb and the heavier bite traces in 400lb with circle hooks and J hooks should probably last longer it's not the straight pull strength it's the bite strength and being put over the teeth for a prolonged time they could work between the strands and weaken them that's why some people use single strand wire I assume that you will be fishing for the threshers and porbeagle and tope the tope wouldn't do that damage to the traces and leaders but threshers and porbeagle could because of the fight time admitted I have a few traces myself probably enough to stock a shop
hi Mark from an autumnal NZ 😊 Can I suggest you watch Billyfishing's RUclips video called North Meets South? His South African rig would be perfect for Common Skate. It's so simple and I use it here for Snapper where I'm distance casting a big bait. He has another video explaining how he uses a dingle dangle (or hair as he calls it) to hold a big bait below a circle hook - again ideal for your Skate.

I love his content but missed the dangle bit, possibly because I saw the “hair” bit and skipped past it. 😕 I like the move towards rigging to avoid deep hooking and especially so with a skate as their mouth/throats are cavernous and deep making unhooking difficult if taken too far.

basically a big carp hair rig the bait is on a hair probably wire below the hook probably a circle also known as a dongle rig
Surely when you tighten up your line on the skate set up, it will pull the hook up to the trident link

I have 5 bite traces and 5 rubbing leaders from C&R which I have bought for my first efforts at the bigger toothy critters.

With the skate rig won’t you dump the lead every time with a grip lead ?
I don’t think so if fishing clean ground and that is the plan. I want a lead that can detach but isn’t on a weak link line.
