I have a similar arrangement and from experience know that overflows can occur if the silt builds up in the bottom of the filters - even minimally. You will benefit from being able to reduce the flow and by adding an overflow system. It is not funny waking to find the pond almost empty because the filter has burst its banks!
Hi Zippy, Wrighty's filter design still has many unoptimised sediment problems as you'll find out over the next couple of years, he makes a fortune from selling vague (e.g. no measurements to where holes are drilled etc.) plans that look good ... and of course any filter with a decent amount of surface area on the media will give good water parameters (which is what he relies on people using as an indication of filter quality where as it is the easiest element to get right in reality). Wrighty completely changed his several previous designs to the design you feature here after a member called Trace on the UK KoiForum started pointing out the mistakes in his previous designs and showed how to correct them all then went on to show how to build the most efficient blue barrel filter possible (ALL problems and fixes explained in detail). Somebody stole the design & Trace was banned inexplicably soon after. Your filter will give perfectly fine water parameters but will fall down with mulm build up over time that will harbour parasites & anaerobic bacteria that will lead to inexplicable health problems while water chemistry parameters look perfect. @@paochew9599 The K1 I grabbed off of Amazon and the 3 barrels I picked up from a local seller I found on Facebook marketplace. I paid $20 per barrel and the K1 was $200 for 6 cubic feet.
My pond water is green with algae, filters stay brown with muck. (The thrill of the pond is gone, it's just a job, I'm to old, want a easier way.) I have a 5200gph water pump. I have a green 18X24 matala filter in front of it, also a white rolled type filter 18X18 at my water fall. I have to clean twice a day just to keep the pump from clogging with debris. Question: How long will I have to keep cleaning my filters before the barrel system takes over? Or will it? My pond 15X18X3 ft. deep.
I'd give the barrel system enough time to establish enough beneficial bacteria to support your bio load, you can speed up that process by using bacteria additives like a pond bomb. I don't know what your stock level is, so maybe a month? I probably clean my sieve and skimmer every 3 days and I flush barrels 1&2 once a week. Right now my maintenance is fairly low. It takes my trickle in about 2 days to fill the water level back up when I do a barrel flush. As for your green water, are you running a UV sterilizer? My green water cleared up after about 2 weeks of running my UV. My pond doesn't receive too much direct sunlight due to my roof. My neighbors pond is full of algae and has no shade. My pond has only been running for 2 months now, so algae may be yet to come for me.
Hi again so when I’m on Amazon it’s only showing pounds so when you say 6 ft.³ could you tell me how many pounds that is? Lol if that’s not a stupid question.
I used a hole saw on my drill to cut the proper sized hole, you then unscrew the shower drain and place it into your hole and make sure the rubber gasket is placed on the proper side (underside in my case). Instead of using plumbers putty I used aquarium silicone on the inside side of the shower drain. Tighten everything up and you should be good to go. I did get a few leaks which I just added a bead of silicone around the underside gasket which seems to have stopped those leaks.
Sorry to say but the pvc to abs glue is not legal. It will fail eventually. No idea why it is sold in big box stores. Hope it lasts for you. Fingers crossed.
You need to get this all together and then start with a plan diagram and then go through the assembly, I lost my mind listening to the presentation. this is a good design , but the delivery is hard to follow. your voice could be more stable ,less whiney, Great design. just could not take it
I've seen a lot of barrel filter's, this is the best by far.
Sieve filter come out nice and fits good. Your going to have a nice system
A great build my friend - I also make my own filters they are easier to clean they are cheap and I think they work better.
Nice work.
Nice explanation better then some of the top ppl out their
Thanks, I try.
Very nice DIY filter systems I love it
Can you list more details all supplies how many things do I need to build one
Thanks
Nicely done Zippy really like this DYI Design on your 3 barrel system
I got the design from Wrighty, I posted the link in the description. Check out his channel also, he has lots of great information.
❤❤it thank you roy😊😊😊
Love the channel. New sup

I've been flushing them once a week, but I can see how they would overflow if you neglected the maintenance. Thanks for the input!
Just subbed you, enjoyed your vidio, best wishes, Tony😀
Thanks for the sub!
intresting video dropped you a sub lok forward to watching more
Awesome, thanks for the sub!
Thank you!!
How has this done over the last 6 months?
Also were those 3” uniseals used on the barrels?
So far so good, no leaks, I clean it out once a week, water quality is spot on. They are 3"
Hi I’m looking in to building one just like this how much media did you put in each barrel and where did you get your best deal thanks
Carmen
I ordered 6-cubic feet off of Amazon and put 2- cubic feet per barrel. K1 Bio Filter Media Amazon ASIN B09BG8GQBF
nice, why do you require two outlet pipes?
I wanted to have the second one for additional current, but it didn't work, so I just have one return.
Very good where yuo bay the k1
I bought the K1 from Amazon US.
What size hole did you make in the barrels for the airline? Also is the airline 1.5 inch?
The 1/2 inch uniseal uses a 1.25 inch hole. I used 1/2 inch PVC pipe for the air lines.

Thanks for the info, I will check it out. Not new to fish keeping, but new to Koi keeping, so all the knowledge I can gather is great.
Can you provide the site to purchase the k1 media balls and how much h was used for the 3 barrels please?

Add a DIY gravel filter after a skimmer and your pond with stay clear.
What volume of k1 media do you need to fill 1 barrel? I think they are sold in kg.
I used 2 cubic feet per barrel which is about 56 liters per barrel.
Hi again so when I’m on Amazon it’s only showing pounds so when you say 6 ft.³ could you tell me how many pounds that is? Lol if that’s not a stupid question.
I'm not sure, I see the option for 6 lbs, but the 6 cubic feet is more. I couldn't find details of the actual weight of the 6 cubic feet option.
How did you fit the shower drain to the base?

Thx for the reply
normal for new k1 to float
Unless sieve is airtight it’s acting like a Venturi and pulling air in as water is pumped through it.
Yep, will have to come up with a solution.

There is no pressure on these joints, it will be fine.
Stand Wood how cm sir
That's just what I used. I only plan on getting 5-7 years out of this pond, so i'm sure the wood will hold up.
