The return of the S2000
I drove both the Z4 S30i MSport and the M40I. I preferred the S30i M Sport. Why? Because my driving domain is narrow single-lane back road twisties. The S30i M Sport is superior in that environment. The added 155 pounds at the front end of the M40i hinders its nimbleness in narrow one-lane backroad twisties. If you are a boulevarde/highway guy the M40i will torch the S30i M Sport from a red light. It's well over 1 second faster to 60.
But, that's not what I am interested in. My passion is an early morning romp on narrow one-lane back roads. In that environment my real-world test drives prove the S30i M Sport to be a far superior sports car. In this particular environment. BTW, this video evaluation of the brakes of this car is quite accurate. They stop and they do not fade.
The Z4 has always been my favorite BMW both for its style/design and its rarity. It has a futuristic vibe each generation, and I’m glad that it not only has the performance to match its looks but to compete against the Upper-Echelon Porsche. I would prefer the 4-cylinder for its fuel economy and lighter weight. I don’t need all the crazy power, especially cuz I’m used to my Camry. The Z4 and the 6-Series GT are my personal top two BMWs. Thank you for convincing the guy to take this on the track! It was a good video. 😁☺️

Sometimes, the added weight of a larger motor in basically the same car can do things you may not be wishing for...

Oh, great! I am currently driving the very first 2003 Z4 3.0 manual and its raw and brilliant. Very modified though. The next one with the metal roof was not at all. Maybe you can get your hands on the turbo six too. Great work, as always!

Ugh, can we stop with the “it ain’t a Toyota” commentary?
It’s not a badge-engineering job! The cars were jointly developed. Big difference. The motor was developed by both BMW and Toyota with major changes such as the now mechanical water pump, closed deck design, and forged internals. The design and chassis tuning were done by separately. And the transmission is a ZF unit so no one gets credit for that.
I was irked that the Supra wasn’t “a Toyota” myself. Until I actually did some research on the thing. A joint development is as good as it was gonna get. Either take that, or we don’t get a Supra or Z4 at all.
Cecil L yup. Toyota would have to build a entire factory line just for the Supra lol or even it’s own factory to build the damn thing. Would have took millions of dollars and sports cars do not sell a lot. So from that prospect of this makes sense financial sense and the supra seems to be a great car might not be the super we wanted but it still stands it’s on ground
While changes were made for the B58 for the Supra and Z4 it’s always had a closed deck design, mechanical water pump and a ZF 8 Speed.

I think it has more to do with the new CEO brining BMWs back to their Ultimate Driving Machine heritage & the Z4 finally transitioning to the CLAR platform.
Unpopular opinion: The OG Z4 is the best looking Z4 ... Especially the M Coupe.

AMRO! While I am not a fan of the OG Z4, I do have admit the collector value of the Z4 M Coupe. The Z3 M Coupe is already 50K US +. The Z4 M Coupe will not be far behind even though its looks are not as polarizing.

Toyota made the Z4 a better sports car by getting BMW to drop the engine placement to lower centre of gravity and widen the track by a good 3 inches from previous Z4s. They made it more of a sports car than it was before

@@shawnlee664 If you read more about it you will find out that Toyota insisted on a late in the game repositioning of the engine for lower centre of gravity, and the the short wheelbase with wider track, which I highly doubt BMW would have done to make the Z4 even more cramped than it was

This is my daily driver 2019 Z4 30i I get so many looks and I feel like millionaire driving it.

Great objective review. I like the interior and it’s actually not priced bad, but as a box s owner, always a difficult comparison but not everybody wants a porsche or a pure sports car.
The reason why BMW tunes the new Z4 more towards pure sports car, is because we customers no longer associate coupe, or in this case roadster just as a sunshine cruiser. Same thing can be said about why Merc SLC sales were dropping in the past few years. We now expect these roadsters and coupe to have pure sporting dynamics and that pretty much explains why Boxster remained successful over the years. Next gen SLC will probably be geared towards driving dynamics, otherwise it won’t survive.

You know what’s disappointing about this car? The lack of roundel on the side. I know the side repeaters have moved up to the mirrors, and that’s fine, but when all the roasters before it had it on the side, it’s a shame to see it missing here. (And yet, it goes on the X2 à la CSL.)
On a more positive note, I’m happy to hear Zed-4 half the time rather than Zee-4.

So it looks like co-development with Toyota actually paid off. Personally having watched both reviews, maybe the BMW gained more from that partnership in making a better Z4 than Toyota did with resurrection of the supra? Lets see

Looks like Benz s550 to me even the way headlight goes back on fender, the hood, front grill set up.
You would not even be able to distinguish banana and apple, even if someone nails both of them on your forehead. BMW has already had these light masks and these lines, as Mercedes still had round headlights and a style for grandfathers.

Drove one just after shooting this . . . It even had the BMW accessory suspension set up. HOLY SH*T!!!!! Of all three cars I shot that day, that was the one I dreamed of that night. They will send me the car but I need to do that one a track. It's brilliant.
@@MotoManTV My questions would be the car's MPG or range in normal driving - I know that may be silly for a sports car, but this seems to be a candidate for a daily driver.

Agree! My 2005 still looks like a true sports car. Convertible, 6 speed, 3.0. Sport mode . Fast, tuned exhaust sounds real nice. And the Toledo blue, black top is just classy.

I do not understand why they don't sell the cheaper entry level 20i in the USA as well.. It uses the same 2.0L 4-cylinder engine as the 30i, just a bit downtuned.. If you are looking for a luxury cruiser and don't care much about driving fast that offers more than enough power and it would make the car a bit more affordable for more people.. In Europe the 20i is about 4000-5000 euro cheaper than the 30i..
Also you can remap the 20i to 30i numbers real easy and cheap..

@@MotoManTV That's not the reason, because the same goes for that car (and a lot of others).. They don't sell the 1.5L base engine for the Mazda MX5 (as we call it) in the USA.. Besides all that, the BMW is much more premium, bigger, more powerful and more expensive.. A base BMW Z4 20i is still quite a bit more expensive than a top of the line fully loaded Mazda MX5.. They are not really competing..

Very weird.... It´s somehow really ugly and somehow also nice. I think the blue one looks worse than the grey one by a lot. The headlights are too big and it looks way better without the roof.
Overall decent job. But For chrissakes PLEASE stop saying “Zed 4”. It’s not working for you. And those loose fitting khakis with the “ i’m still youthful at heart” red Chuck Taylor’s gotta go. At least untuck your shirt. Just some friendly advice if you’re looking to scale this for a wide audience. Other than that, nice review.

Every car critic has complained about the brakes on this car I have a feeling that it's going to be one of the down points at this car not only is BMW trying something different here but I think they might have missed the mark on a couple things
If it had a 6/8 speed manual stick , then worrying about the brakes is a mute point. Using the transmission and down shifting would mitigate the brake problems.
