      Yup! I have known I had curly hair since I was a child. But at 34, I just started to learn how to take care of it. I straightened it all my life. No one knew what to do with it. The only other person in my family with curly hair is my grandmother. But she only straightens it. Her parents were Arabic but pretended to be French when they came to the US. And my great grandmother saw the curly hair as something that could expose them, so she shamed my grandmother. Who in turn shamed me. Without really realizing what she was doing. Anyways, now I'm doing it correctly. And no more crazy poof hair after drying it! Which my family would make fun of me for and took as a sign my hair was unhealthy. I have had the same stylist for 15 years. She told me my hair was the healthiest she had ever seen it. I'm really happy I started this process.

      @@user-sleepy33 They said "she never said curly" which is false. She said the word curly. Therefore, the original comment's "Maybe not curly, but definitely wavy" didn't come completely out of left field.
      And the original comment is not even saying something like "she claimed to have curly hair when it's not curly, it's wavy", they're reaffirming that "yes your hair type is indeed wavy, not curly".

      @Stella If you use gel, then you just mix the gel and leave in in your hand, rub together, and apply. (I find that the best way is this: post shower, take a dry towel, and flip head over and scrunch hair. Then apply product and scrunch again and air dry or diffuse.) It works great. If you're going to use a mouse, then yes, separately! I :) Also to note, I would brush hair before shower.. don't brush or comb through after cause it pulls the curls out.

    I never found out because my hair was always “unruly” so I brushed and straightened and killed it for years. One time I was with a group and we decided to impulsively buy a slip n slide and dump a ton of dawn on it. Well we did. My hair was so dry at the end and my friend who has coils was like, so distraught over how dry my hair looked, she had brought her leave in conditioner. She told me to just bare with her and use it, she said to just scrunch it in for more even application and sure enough beautiful defined 3b-3c curls popped right on up. She like freaked out and dragged me straight to her house. It’s one of my best memories because for the next like week I basically lived at her house because she wanted to help me with my hair. She never had a sister, and mine was like 15 years younger than me so I never had an older sister, so we got to play those roles for a while and we’re still playing them. I have wavy hair but have so much damage. Here's how I get mine to stay wavy: first I brush my hair with a wet and dry brush before and during the shower (as long as I have it conditioned). Because of my damage, my hair won't hold waves as well if I brush after my wash. After the shower I will take a towel and scrunch the access water away and leave the waves there. Take the wet towel with you to style. I put first a hydrating style cream in (I use Morocco style cream) and scrunch it in (do not straighten your waves). Once you have a good amount in use a hold moose on your damp hair and really scrunch it (maybe 15-20 times with and without the towel). I them will use an air dry formula because heat damages my hair more or if I don't have time I'll defuse. Don't hold your defused down scrunch it in your hair and hold for a few seconds. It will create wavy volume. Make sure you dry your scalp (gently) because it can hold your hair down more. To get rid of any crunch take a small amount of heathy oil to your dry ends and again scrunch don't pull. Trust me.... your hair is just like mine and it works wonders.

      @Samantha Thebodeau So what i do in the shower is use a shower comb to make sure i have no knots in my hair then ill do a tshirt scrunch. after that i dunk my hair in a bowl and scrunch again just to make sure its fully scrucnched lol. I then difuse my hair just so it's damp and no sopping wet. I use the Shea moisture curl mousse after and run my fingers through the wave pattern to make sure its how i like it. I may also add finger twirling to make it a little bit more defined. you can put a scarf or tshirt on in the video just to keep your hair in place. at night (when you're not showing again) you should definitely make sure your hair is tightly wrapped so your waves don't end up all weird in the morning
      sorry about the whole routine lol I just thought it might help. all hair is a little different so if you cant find anything that's working how you like it to, you should talk to a stylist or you might even have a different hair texture

    As a former hairdresser who focused on curly hair, I have one advise.
    Literally just keep at it and the curl pattern will become stronger over time.
    I discovered my own curlpattern this way and helped so many like you realize they actually have curls and/or waves.
    It takes a while for the true nature of your hair to show when you've taught your hair to be straight for so long. I've even seen situations where someone has more curls towards their roots because that hair hasn't been "mistreated" for as long.

    • @cmm3699
      @cmm3699 9 месяцев назад +6

      Some people may be like me and have hair that is fine as well as textured, so the curls have always been closer to the roots. Even when I was a little girl, and my hair seemingly looked “semi straight” and was bright blonde hair, I’d still get curlicues popping up all over the place. They really liked to show up by the top of my head, near my ears, and especially near my temples back then.
      As I got older, and my hair got “mistreated” in so many ways, I still had curlier hair closer to my roots. My hair even looked more wavy for the first half of my life, but then the more I experimented with it the curlier it got.
      Yet, no matter what I did, 1 thing always rang true for me: the longer my hair is the less tight my curls are.
      My hair has also constantly been described as “fine but lots of it”, and it can sometimes feel and look “poofy” no matter what I do. The only thing that has easily and unquestionably helped to calm it down is my natural oils, so the longer it’s been since a wash the shinier and healthier it looks (up to about a week or 2).

    Wrapping your hair around the brush might actually diminish your waves. Wavy hair goes back and forth in one dimension whereas curly hair wraps in a helix shape, which is why wrapping hair around something helps curls but not waves. Trying to make a curl out of a wave may flatten anything you get naturally out of scrunching. You have to go with the “grain” of the hair. (Note: I’m not a hair dresser, but have gone from thinking I had straight hair to wavy hair to recently finding that I have curly hair so this is just what I’ve gathered from my personal research) Hope this helps! ❤

    • @s.w.5686
      @s.w.5686 Год назад +50

      Hairdresser here! And definitely seconded. Brush styling can work, but right now its best to listen to your hair and have it tell you it's shape. Try putting your products in your hair right after a shower, while your hair is still very wet, and then scrunching with just your hands, and shaking the hair at the roots. Then you can scrunch out the water and either diffuse or air-dry or plop. Whichever works, although the less you touch your hair the better. Oh! And adding in gel and / or mousse before scrunching will give it more definition and hold, so the curls maintain their shape even after a plop or diffuse. Welcome to the curly girl club!
      Edit: I like how you called it the "grain" of the hair, I might use that😂.

Based on what I see your hair is heavily tangled when wet so I recommend hydrating but still lightweight products for your finer hair. I also recommend you try what called plopping with a cotton t-shirt (look up for details)

    Yes! I recommend getting a nice deep conditioner to use maybe 1-2 times a week after the shower. After showering, scrunch your hair with it or a curl cream but make sure you hair is totally soaked. Once your curls look defined, take a tshirt or microfiber if possible and scrunch to remove water n product. Do not touch you hair for like 10 min and then diffuse. If u don’t want to diffuse just leave your hair alone and don’t touch it.

I call it my jewfro, it is always wild when untamed… and the worst part about it is the billion baby hairs that poke up when I’m running around in wet hair in a ponytail… I’ll look in the mirror and it’s just frizzy short ends sticking straight up through my long hair like some frizzy halo 😂 that’s the one thing that drives me crazy, but with enough hairspray I can keep it down… I just try not to use it cause I know it’s not great for hair 💁🏻‍♀️
      But I feel like all those with straight hair are so lucky cause they could literally air dry and have a nice hairstyle… I have to put a couple products in mine to make the curls/waves look good. But I do feel lucky when it just takes 10 mins to have a full look… and I get a lot of compliments! Then I don't brush it again until next time my hair is wet. The longer I've done this, the better it has become, and it seems quite time saving compared to normal washing and brushing.

      Hi Helen,
      I was advised to do this as part of "the curly girl method".
      Using quite a lot of conditioner (I always had to anyway as I have long, thick hair) means for me it's quite easy to brush through after washing. I haven't missed the shampoo at all.
      In between washes I do find my hair tangles up a bit, but honestly it's worth it for me to just leave it as it is, with beachy looking waves.
      Fortunately I don't have anyone trying to run their hands through my hair - I don't know if that's normal or not 😂
      I also cut my hair in a way to encourage layers, which I think helps the curls.
      So basically I wake up in the morning and my hair is ready to go for the day! And it means I skip on the shampoo stage, blow drying, brushing and styling. For me it's a real time saver and looks much better than before I started doing this. I guess I can't guarantee that it will work for you, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you in case you do try it. Best wishes 🤞

      it’s more confusing than you’d think 😭 there are different types of wavy hair, and some of them are very subtle especially if you’re used to heat styling. if i blow dry my hair it’s straight, if i let it air dry it’s a tiny bit wavy, and if i really go through the effort of moisturizing, proper products etc it is distinctly wavy. it’s also a lot more wavy when it’s healthy, so a lot of people spend a long time thinking they have frizzy straight hair and keep damaging it by trying to style it as though it were straight hair. the struggle is real

    It's not only about the right "things" (products, etc). It's more about getting your hair healthy again. It's about stopping hot tools long enough for the dried/fried parts to grow out/get cut off, and allowing the true shape of your hair follicle grow. It's a journey for sure!

    My hair looked like that when I tried to follow the curly method for the first time. The waves are so loose, because we straighten/dry our hair with brushes. In time, your waves will have better form/tighten.

    Keep at it girl, it looks gorgeous! I went wavy 5 years ago and even though I’m not pure CGM 100% of the time, my hair is so much healthier and I have fallen in love with my natural waves 🌊💙
